The Miracles of San Juan 4

"He's late."

"He will come."

"Mr. Yuy, we can't let the whole ship wait because of one single guy. We will depart in exactly 5 minutes." That was the captain's last word before he went to check through the whole ship once more. I was pissed off. And sad. I had hoped that Duo would come, but until now he didn't show up. I sighed, feeling really really bad about the whole thing. Maybe I had made him feel unsure with my comment yesterday.

Oh well, I told myself, him being a miracle surely also means that he tends to do funny things, appearing and disappearing again and things. I sighed. And I hoped so badly that he would come.

Just as that last comment slipped through my mind, I heard footsteps approaching and quickly went to the backside of the ship. It was Duo! But the captain didn't see him and was already starting to leave the port.

"Wait!" I shouted down the whole ship, waiting that the captain would hear me. No luck though for he continued his work while Duo ran as fast as he could towards us.

"Duo! Jump!!" I shouted, not believing my own words. Yeah, very smart, Yuy, let him jump and break his bones. But well, before I could really do anything to take my comment back, he had taken off and flew through the air. It was like watching a slow motion movie. I saw his every step he made over the wooden plank before jumping high in the air, gracious. I worried that he might fall either into the water or onto the railing, and that would probably be not really good. But instead of bumping against the boat, he made some kind of salto and rolled onto the ship, really really gracious.

"Whoa." Was all I brought out while he stood up grinning. And going into my direction.

"Hehe, told'cha I would come, Heero." He smiled while throwing an arm around my shoulders. "Heeeyyy, don't be so tensed. Relax. You're gonna enjoy yourself." He tried to loosen my tension, and well, it worked and I smiled at him before the furious captain stood behind us.

"And who might you be?" he asked angrily while staring at Duo with such a hatred gaze that I thought he was actually trying to kill him with his eyes. And to my surprise, Duo stared back just as angry. Before they could make any further attempts of probably hurting themselves, I quickly interfered their staring.

"Uh, captain, that's Duo. I have his pass. Don't worry, he won't make any trouble. Uh, would you mind navigating the ship now?" I tried to sound serious, but the man seemed to be really pissed off at my last comment. Grunting, he stomped away again, leaving me behind with a still angry Duo. I turned towards him and froze as I saw the anger in those beautiful eyes. I didn't know how to calm him. I had to think about yesterday, when he had thrown the piece of soap towards my head and yelled at me. It made me smile a bit. Strange that these memories were … feeling good to me. It may sound strange, but it really was like that. They made me feel somehow cosy, and warm.

However, I quickly remembered what I wanted to do and so I simply started talking.

"Duo, good to see you. Why were you late? I was worried you wouldn't show up in time." Oh, holy distraction. Our fireman in the burning heat of a fire, our airplane over a sinking boat. My resolution for everything. I mentually thanked the great Distraction God three times before focusing on Duo again, who seemed less angry due to my question.

"Uh,yeah. Sorry, Heero. I went to visit a ….friend before. And well, it took me a bit longer than I wanted." He smiled at me. But it was not an earnest smile. I could feel it, feel his remaining anger. He was still pissed off because of the captain. And it seemed that my Distraction God was busy elsewhere right now. I sighed and sat down on one of the banks. And to my surprise, Duo followed me, sitting down beside me.

"Heero? Let me ask you something." He started speaking and I nodded. His anger seemed to disappear really. And I smiled. Two thanks for the distraction god.

"Why are you observing whales? I mean, what for?" That question sure surprised me for Duo hadn't seemed interested in my work yesterday. But I answered anyway.

"Well, it's my hobby, you know. Since I was a little kid I always dreamed of diving into the water, swimming with the whales. I've also watched lotsa movies and documentations. I studied psychology, nevertheless, because my father had been a brilliant man, nearly a second Sigmund Freud. So I promised that I would follow his example, but as soon as I had my first `test' patients ,so actually some of his patients, but I had to try to cure them, and after he died, I quickly stopped doing the shit and started another study, this time about whales and other sea creatures." Whoohoo, I think it's the first time I've ever talked for so long. And I wasn't even finished, lost in my memories.

" I was such a fast learner that I finished earlier than others and now I am observing those fascinating creatures and give the results to certain `whale watching' teams. I am helping them a lot with it." I smiled to myself. Oooh, my job was just the best in the whole world. Oh well, it might sound childish, but well, I think the job was the best one.

"And what about uh.. money? Do they give you some?" He asked me, still curious.

"Oh well, not really. I live from the money my father has earned during his lifetime. And as soon as I have made enough studies myself, maybe I can found my own little group of observators and start exploring the sea with my own little boat." Oooh, my mind quidckly drifted off into dreamland while I still smiled like an idiot. However, Duo interfered for he suddenly shook me slightly.

"Hey, Heero." He nearly whispered while tugging at the sleeve of the black T-shirt I wore today. Not all too smart to wear black during summer, but still, the anticipation of seeing my lovely cutesys again made me want to feel like one of them. That's why I wore the black T-shirt with the white front. Oh well, call me stupid, call me crazy, I don't care. I'd do anything to get closer to them.

Anyway, as Duo kept tugging at my sleeve, I finally managed to get out of my thoughts and focus on him as he smiled at me and continued speaking as soon as I looked at him.

"You want to observe? Then come with me, I wanna show you something." He went away from me, down the stairs and onto the lower deck which made it possible for you to reach down for the cool sea water. I smiled before following him and soon we were standing side by side, looking at the water. Some time passed before he suddenly reached out one hand and leaned over the edge, putting the hand into the water. And none of that was as strange as the noises he suddenly started making. I stared at him absolutely shocked, not knowing what to think and what to do before suddenly, my heart jumped in joy as the head of one orca came out of the water.

"Duo! It's…"

"It's cute, hu?" Kinda right. He stroked its head lovingly and the whale seemed to enjoy it a lot. I wanted to look at it more closely but as soon as it nticed my movement, it quickly disappeared into the water again.

"Oh. Sorry, Duo, I didn't want to…" But he shushed me, quickly making some other odd noises and the whale came back. Duo made a few other noises before bringing my hand down to the creatures head quickly, leaving me no time to protest. But why should I have? Oh, it felt really funny! Wet, and warm, but also a bit like rubber. But it felt good as well, and I liked the way Duo held my own hand, guiding it over the whales wet skin and stroking over my fingers during the process. I sighed silently for I really liked this. But all too soon the whale swam away again as the other passengers arrived at the scene and tried to make a photo or throw a glance at the fascinating creature.

But I stood there, perplexed, still having my hand in the water, Duo still holding my hand, standing behind me, and I really, really liked it.

"Hey, Heero," he whispered near my ear, sending tingles down my neck," how about getting a closer look at them?" I didn't think for a minute.

"How?" I whispered back, curious how we should get any closer than now. Well, my brilliant mind came up with an idea, but I ignored it. Duo surely wouldn't mean that he wanted to -

All thoughts were forgotten as he took me and jumped into the water with me.

"Duo!" I shouted in shock - and joy. Of course I was getting all wet and everything, but it was just this great feeling you have when doing something, you know, kinda illegal, but not as bad as taking drugs or anything. Just like, breaking rules or something. Like, stealing an apple on the market and then bolting away. I just grinned like an idiot as the captain shouted as us if we had gone completely crazy.

"Duo, it's great!" I said and swam towards him while he was busy making his funny sounds. And before I knew what was happening, an orca appeared under me and after being astounded for a few moments, I just shouted in joy. Hey, I was riding a whale!!

"Whohooooooooo!!!" was all I managed to bring out. The sea air in my nose, my clothes all wet, my hair dripping from everyhwere I was sitting on the back of an orc and rode it! It swam quite fast and away from the boat where the captain was still yelling that we should drag our asses back there, but Duo, who sat on a whale beside me, simply shouted back.

"You can KISS my ass, but If you want to do anything else to it, you've gotta CATCH it first!" I laughed out loud as we swam away from the staring people, right into the deep ocean.
