Yusuke knew that he had a point, there was no doubt she still loved Hiei regardless of what had happened. He could see it in her eyes, every moment she stared out the window waiting for him to come back. If things had been different though it could have been him she looked at like that, he knew it! There was something there in her expression when she looked at him as well but he knew that it wasn't as strong. "I know she loves him... But I can't help the way I feel Kurama. She cares for me too, I can see it!"

Kurama just nodded sadly, he had seen it as well. Kagome had latched onto the both of them as her source of comfort while Hiei was gone and it hadn't helped matters, for Youko or for Yusuke. But neither of them could deny her what she had needed and she really didn't know what she was doing to them. "I know she does Yusuke. I can see I'm not going to be able to talk you out of this pursuit so might I suggest another option?" He waited until he was sure Yusuke wanted to hear this idea. Inari help him, he couldn't believe he was even going to propose this idea. He just hoped that Hiei would be amendable to it. The hybrid respected Yusuke's strength and loyalty so it was a possibility but a slim one. Especially given what had happened between them recently. "You are young for a demon and as such are not aware of what it is that your instincts are telling you. This is probably what is causing a good part of this, both your human and demonic instincts are in agreement and it's making things more difficult for you. Rarely there are times where demon's take on two mates. Usually it is in a pack situation or because of arranged marriages such as the case of royalty."

Yusuke looked at Kurama in surprise, this was something that had never been mentioned to him. Most people had just assumed that he knew everything he needed to know and didn't question it further. He had heard about mating practices before but this was the first time he had heard of a demon taking two mates. "That's interesting but what does this have to do with me?" He hoped that Kurama wasn't suggesting that he take both Hiei and Kagome as a mate. He supposed Hiei was a good enough looking guy but he had no desire to bed him.

"It has everything to do with you Yusuke. Hiei respects you, both as a friend and a fighting partner. There could become more to it than that but that is up to the three of you. What I am suggesting is instead of fighting over her perhaps the two of you could come to the agreement that you both would mate her. It is a given that Hiei would be her primary mate, he wouldn't stand for anything less than that. You could become her secondary, the marking process is a bit different. " So far he was rather pleased that Yusuke hadn't leapt up yelling that there was no way in hell he'd be willing to share Kagome. It would seem that in that instance his demonic instincts were overpowering the human morals that had been drilled into his head.

Truthfully Yusuke was curious. He couldn't say he liked the idea of sharing her with Hiei but he knew that if he forced a confrontation then someone was going to end up dead and Kagome would likely purify the other for it. If it was the only way he could be with her then he'd give it consideration, ultimately the final choice would be Kagome's, assuming Hiei even agreed to it. "How is it different? I mean I know all about going vampire and such but I've never heard about this before."

Hiei pushed himself faster as the fortress came into sight. He hadn't stopped anywhere along the way to catch his breath, instead completely focused on getting back and having this settled so he could go home. Home, yes that was exactly where he wanted to go. If nothing else he could go and collect Kagome and then take her back to the house. They needed to work things out but right now he'd be perfectly happy if she would allow him to hold her for the night, or approaching day as the case may be. He slowed as he approached the entrance and proceeded inside unhindered. No doubt word would spread quickly of his return, hopefully Mukuro would have an excuse prepared for Enki as to why he abandoned his mission so suddenly.

He searched the place focusing on Mukuro's energy, finding her in her private quarters. He knocked on the door once and then walked in, seating himself on a chair nearby. "So what sort of condition is this half dead human in and how long will it be before I can rip his organs out one at a time?" He had been waiting for this day for a very long time now and he refused to be denied the satisfaction of killing him slowly.

Mukuro looked at him with a raised brow, it would seem someone was in a blood thirsty mood tonight, not that she could blame him. Her voice was colored with amusement when she spoke, letting him know just what she thought of his behavior. "He's in the regeneration room Hiei, you know that takes time. Especially with a human. Considering the injuries that Yusuke had given him I would say it's going to take at least two days, perhaps more. Unless you'd rather just kill him now to get it over with."

"No, I can wait. I want him to know exactly what it is I am doing to him and that won't happen if he's that bad off." Hiei wondered exactly how Youko had come across him and what Yusuke had to do with any of this. "So Yusuke was the one to injure him." It was a statement not a question, Mukuro didn't beat around the bush, she'd come straight out and tell him what she knew.

"He was, I looked through his mind and saw what happened. He deserves to die for what he did. He knew it was happening and did nothing to stop it, because he wanted Yusuke's woman. That's what this entire thing was about, breaking them apart and your relationship as well since they figured out he had feelings for Kagome. Are you certain you want to pick up where you left off though? His relationship with this Keiko is over and from what I could tell he's been working to get closer to Kagome while you were gone." Mukuro watched him carefully, waiting to see what sort of reaction it earned her. She wasn't surprised to see the anger and jealousy flash through his eyes before he was able to lock it down.

Hiei looked at her coldly, trying to figure out exactly what her game was. It was almost as if she were baiting him but why? They had no romantic relationship together and they never would. Perhaps it was out of curiosity, he couldn't be certain. "I'm always certain about what I want. Kagome is mine and she will remain so. If he's trying to move in then it's long past time that I returned to the Ningenkai. Send a messenger when he is ready for me."

"Fine, just be careful Hiei. I don't see Yusuke as giving up on this easily, bring her here if you must in order to fix what happened. I'd like to speak to her anyway." She smirked at the look of surprise that crossed his face when she said that. No doubt he was wondering exactly why she wanted to meet Kagome. Truthfully she wanted to be certain that this human was worthy of him. She'd heard of her plenty but she had yet to meet a human that carried that much power, miko or otherwise. Yusuke Urameshi had been the exception but then again he wasn't exactly a human either.

Hiei nodded sharply and stood, more than ready to head back to the Ningenkai. He'd consider her suggestion, it wasn't like he was going anywhere anytime soon and if Yusuke had indeed been pushing his advantage with him gone then perhaps it was time for him to remove Kagome from Yusuke's presence. It was something to consider at any rate, he wasn't sure how Kagome would react to the suggestion of going into the Makai. He ignored the questioning looks he received from the demons in the compound, everyone knew that he had been ordered on a mission and wasn't due back yet. 'Let Mukuro deal with them, I have other things to attend to.'

Once he was outside he blurred up into the trees once more, making his way towards the Ningenkai. It would be daylight soon and he wanted to be there before Kagome woke. She had always been early to rise unless he was in bed with her, a carry over from her days traveling to the past he knew. The scenery blurred by him, suddenly changing from the wilds of the Makai to the concrete buildings of the city. It made no difference to him as he took to the tops of the buildings, leaping across. He was close now, he allowed the Jagan to open slowly, seeking out Kagome's energy and finding it easily. It lightly touched on her mind, confirming his suspicions. She was sleeping, though it wasn't peacefully. Whatever had happened had upset her and it would be up to him to reassure her.

He also sensed that Yusuke and Kurama were awake which was a bit... unusual at least on Yusuke's part. He'd worry about it later he decided, he masked his energy and approached the balcony to the bedroom Kagome was in. He didn't want to advertise his presence, if he did then no doubt both men would come up demanding answers and interrupt what he intended to do. Quietly he slid the sliding glass doors open and walked inside. His thoughts again returned to taking her home but to do so would mean waking her up and he himself was tired. Being stuck where he had been he had refused to rest, knowing if he did so he'd be leaving himself open to attack. He made the decision to just remain there for the day, they could always leave later.

He sat down on the edge of the bed and removed his boots as well as his shirt before climbing up beside her. His arms slipped around her waist and he pulled her closer to him. At his touch Kagome's eyes fluttered open in confusion. She whispered his name in disbelief, unsure of whether she was dreaming or not. One of her hands slowly slid up to his face, touching it gently as tears came to her eyes. She had been slowly losing hope that he would return to her and now he was back. Hiei brought one hand up to cover hers before he leaned forward to kiss her temple. His breath ghosted along her ear as he whispered to her. "Sleep, I'll be here when you wake." He wasn't sure if she would listen to him this time or not but he had hope. He was too tired to talk about what had happened right now.

Kagome nodded tiredly and pressed up closer to him, breathing in deeply. Knowing he was there helped her to relax, maybe now the nightmares would stop. She felt him bring the blanket back up over the both of them as he held her and smiled slightly. She was nearly back asleep when she whispered the words that he had been waiting weeks to hear again. "I love you Hiei."

Kurama looked up, thinking he heard something in Kagome's bedroom. He allowed himself a small smile, he had thought he felt Hiei's youki coming earlier. No doubt he was back and didn't wish to be disturbed. That was fine with him, it was highly unlikely he would attempt anything with her at this time anyway. They still needed to talk and he was probably tired from racing back. He turned his attention back to Yusuke before he began to ask what was wrong. "Well the primary bite always goes on the side of the neck. Which side really doesn't matter however, you yourself saw that when you changed that night and marked her. The secondary bite if usually in a less conspicuous place, simply because the secondary mate is always submissive to the first. The primary mark is more prominently displayed for this reason. In order to complete either bond blood needs to be shared with one key difference. For a secondary mating bond to take place you would need to take both Hiei and Kagome's blood. It shows the primary male's acceptance of your suit. Without that happening the bond will not complete and the bite will heal without scarring."

Yusuke contemplated exactly what Kurama was saying. Would Hiei be accepting of something like that? The better question in his mind would he? He wasn't entirely certain that he could handle watching Hiei touch her, the desire to possess her for himself was so strong. Yet at the same time he didn't necessarily want a fight to the death with the hybrid. He knew he was powerful but then so was Hiei. Especially when it came to defending something he considered his. Would it be enough to close the power gap between them? It wasn't something he particularly wanted to find out. "I get what your saying but what if I want to be her primary mate?"

Kurama didn't even blink when Yusuke asked this, he wasn't surprised by the question but Yusuke would have to come to accept his place in the relationship assuming Hiei let him in. Not to mention Kagome's feelings on the matter. "It wouldn't happen Yusuke. Hiei is a far older, wiser demon than you are and he had been with her longer. There is no way he would be submissive to you. Assuming that he finds you worthy of her I would be happy even getting the chance as a secondary mate. It doesn't happen often."

Yusuke sighed, he knew Kurama was right with this. He had no reason to lie to him and it would fit right in with Hiei's personality. He couldn't see that demon being submissive to anyone ever. "I'll consider it." He looked up at the time noticing how late it was, or in this case how early. "Aren't you supposed to go to work today?" He was tired, he had just gotten to sleep a few minutes before Kurama had come home and he was anxious to get back to it. If Hiei was coming back there was no telling when he'd get to sleep next to her again.

"Actually I do and if I don't get ready now I'm going to be late." Kurama stood and made his way towards his own room fully intent on taking a shower before he went in to work. He left Yusuke sitting on the couch thinking about what he had learned. He stopped at the room Kagome and Hiei were in, opening the door quietly. It was as he thought, they were both asleep and based on both of their expressions they were finally accepting each other once more. He shut the door slowly and proceeded on to his shower. If only he could call in today.

Yusuke yawned and stood up, it was time for him to go back to bed. As he made his way down the hallway something was nagging him in the back of his mind but he couldn't quite put his finger on it. He shrugged it off assuming it was from lack of sleep. He reached the bedroom and opened the door only to stop when he looked at the bed. His fist clenched momentarily as he looked at the way Hiei was holding her. It was supposed to be him in that spot but once more he was too late. He could only stand there staring, unsure of what he wanted to do.

Hiei stirred slightly and opened his eyes. The first time the door had opened it had woken him he had known it was Kurama. He didn't view the fox as a threat but Yusuke was another story. He stared straight at the man standing in the doorway and was surprised slightly at the look of pain in his eyes. It would seem that Mukuro had been right, he had been trying to make a move yet he could tell that nothing more had happened between them. Yusuke's scent covered her in some ways but not as if they had been intimate again. He watched the man take a step forward and narrowed his eyes. If Yusuke was thinking to displace him he was sadly mistaken. He projected his voice clearly into Yusuke's mind so he would know exactly how wanted he was at the moment. 'Leave, if you wake her I will kill you.'

Yusuke stared defiantly at Hiei for several long moments before nodding. Hiei might not be loaded with tact but he had a point. Neither of them wanted to wake her up. Sighing to himself he walked back out closing the door behind him. It looked like him and the couch were going to become good friends.

Hiei stared down at Kagome's sleeping form for several long moments. It had been too long, much too long since he had the opportunity to do this. He had missed laying next to her, watching her sleep. She would be waking soon he knew and it would be time for them to talk. A lot of hurtful things had been said on his part and he needed to apologize for them. Whether she would be willing to accept what he had to say however was another story but he had to try. The fact that she hadn't kicked him out of the room this time gave him hope that she'd be at least willing to listen. It was amazing how content she looked all things considering. At the moment only a hint of the strain that she had been through shown on her face. 'How could I have done this to her? All she ever did was love me and want a family...a family with me. Will she even be able to forgive me? Do I even deserve it if she does?'

He wasn't even sure of what to say to her, would words even be enough? The smallest of smiles crossed his lips when she moved closer to him, it was a start and a sign that they could work their way through this. His hand brushed her cheek gently, how could he have been so blind to what she needed from him? Sleepy blue eyes opened and looked at him. Surprise flashed through them followed by an instant wariness combined with a touch of hope. It was a look that made his heart clench, he never wanted to see it directed at him again.

Kagome first became aware of that she was pressed up against something warm, a vague memory of Hiei coming to her in the middle of the night appeared in her mind. She didn't want to open her eyes, believing that when she truly woke that feeling of warmth and being protected would vanish into thin air like it had so many times before. She snuggled in closer to that warmth and found that she came into contact with a firm chest. It was then that she felt a touch on her face, gentle, loving and she had to know. Her eyes opened slowly and traveled upwards, locking with Hiei's. Time stopped for her in that moment as she stared at him. It hadn't been a dream, he had come back to her just like Kurama had said. But what was going to happen between them now? Would he still want her or was this going to be his final goodbye to her? "You came back, he said you would... and I hoped but I wasn't sure if you would."

Hiei closed his eyes when he heard those words, the kitsune had done as he had promised. For that he was thankful, he couldn't imagine how much more difficult this would be if she had thought he had up and vanished again without a word. "I only left because I had no choice. Mukuro had need of me, but I'm back." He opened his eyes again and stared down into hers trying to convey every ounce of his affection for her into that look. He was about to say something that he had never said to anyone before. It was something that was long overdue for her to hear. "Listen carefully Kagome, this isn't easy for me to say but you need to know. First, I wronged you and for that I'm sorry. It won't make up for what happened, but I want you to know it won't happen again."

Kagome listened to his apology, stunned that he would give her one. This entire mess had began with her, through not going to him sooner and here he was apologizing. Her voice was barely a whisper when it came out, she had much to make up for as well. "I'm sorry too, it should never have happened. I should have talked to you sooner, asked what you wanted and I didn't."

Hiei stopped her before she could continue, taking her chin in his hand and forcing her to look up at him again. "Don't, don't say anymore. While I was gone the first time I thought about it, I came to accept it. I'm no longer mad about that, about any of it. Twice I've left without giving you a chance to explain only to find out that I was wrong. It's asking a lot, but will you give me a third chance? I give you my word it won't happen again." He held his breath as he waited for her answer.
