Kagome wanted to say she would, but she was afraid to. She knew that he always kept his word but still the fear remained. They had both been hurt so much by what had happened and things had changed for both of them. She still wanted him, still wanted a family with him. He said that he had accepted what had happened but it was after the fact now. Aiko was gone, dead before she had a chance to draw her first breath. Would he still be accepting if she were to ask him for another child? She knew he was waiting for her answer but she had to know. "Hiei... If.. If I say yes, and I were to get pregnant again what then? I still want a family, I understand if you don't but... I can't help what I want. What would happen between us?"

 

 

Call it intuition if you must but somehow he had known this was coming. It was a question that he had asked himself several times while he had been gone. The thought of what could happen to her and their children scared the hell out of him but if it was something she truly wanted then they would face it together. He wouldn't leave her again. "Kagome, I accepted our last child. The risks involved worry me but... If you want to have a family then I'm willing to take the chance." Hiei paused for a moment giving her time to think about what he said before continuing. "If it happens again you will tell me as soon as you find out. I won't risk losing you to complications that could have been avoided. Is that understood?"

 

 

Kagome smiled slightly at his last demand, not taking offense at the tone he had used with her. He was always that way when he was worried about something and it just confirmed to her that he was concerned for her. She laid her head on his chest as she considered what he said. He would be willing to try, if only to make her happy. She knew of the risks involved but she was willing to chance it. "Are you sure of this?"

 

 

He ran his fingers through her hair, of course she would have her doubts. There was only one thing he knew to do that would erase them from her mind, it was something he should have done a long time ago. He brushed her hair back away from her neck and he ran a claw lightly over her shoulder. "Kagome I have something to ask you. Before I met you I never even considered taking a mate but since then I've thought about it a lot. I'm serious about this, about you. I want to mark you, once it's done it's forever. We'll always be bound. Will you let me?"

 

 

Kagome stared up at him in shock, she had hoped that one day he would come to care for her enough to mark her. Something had always seemed to be holding him back from her and she tried to make up for it, loving him all the more. She understood about being afraid to open up enough to trust someone completely, to love someone fully. When she had loved and lost Inuyasha she swore she would never allow herself to be hurt again. But then she had met Hiei and he carried even more emotional scars than she did. Her heart went out to him even though he tried to push her away. It took a long time but he finally let her in and in turn healed the damage that she had received at the hands of Naraku. "I will but.. only if you love me. Don't do it if you have any doubts."

 

 

Hiei slid down closer to her and nuzzled her neck slowly. He ran his tongue lightly over the area that he would soon place his mark. "I do love you. Never forget that." The words came to him easier than he thought would be possible. He continued to bathe her neck, getting her to relax. It would cause more pain for her to be tense when he bit her and he didn't want that. It would be painful enough for her as it was. Once he was certain that she was ready he bit down, his fangs easily piercing the skin. Blood flowed into his mouth beginning the first stage of the bond as he poured his youki into her body. He felt her tears splash down onto his bare shoulder as he continued to strengthen the mark. When he was done there would be no question as to who she was mated to.

 

 

Once he was satisfied he withdrew only to clean the wound with his tongue. "If you are unsure about this the time to tell me is now. Once you take my blood there is no going back." He waited anxiously to see if Kagome would change her mind or not. When she showed no sign on backing down he brought his hand up to his own neck, cutting himself. Normally it would be a return bite but he knew that she would have difficulty drawing enough blood to complete the bond. When blood began to flow he waited for her to come forward.

 

 

Kagome couldn't say she was thrilled about having to drink it but she would do so if necessary. "Of course I'm sure Hiei, I love you as well." She brought her mouth down over the wound and let the crimson liquid slide down her throat. She was surprised to hear a groan come from him as her tongue swept over the cut once more. She began to pull back, thinking that she had caused him pain when his hand came up to tangle in her hair and hold her in place. It was slightly painful to her, the feel of his youki running through her body as it came in contact with her holy energy yet it didn't fight the bonding. Instead the tingling sensation began to fade rapidly as she continued to bathe his wound.

 

 

Hiei was reluctant to release her but did so anyway, allowing her to pull away from him. His body had responded to the act quickly yet he forced his desire down, knowing that now was not the time for this. She was still vulnerable, he didn't need to use the jagan to see that much. He would wait for her to come to him when she was ready. Only then would they resume more pleasurable activities.

 

 

Kagome looked up into his eyes, taking note of how much darker they were now. She knew what he was fighting and it warmed her to know that he wasn't going to push her for that. Still, as long as they remained in bed the temptation would continue to be there. Her stomach growled, giving her the perfect excuse to get up. "Want to come with me and get breakfast?"

 

 

He nodded even though he'd much rather stay in bed with her. Food was one of the last things on his mind though he knew she needed to eat. By the looks of it she had lost quite a bit of weight and that was not something that would be allowed to continue. Hiei released the hold that he had on her and sat up, watching as Kagome got out of bed and went to the closet. He nearly groaned as she peeled off the nightgown she had worn to bed and dropped it in the hamper. He had a perfect view from where he sat, his desire building. This was definitely going to be a test of his patience if nothing else.

 

 

Kagome turned and looked at him curiously, his expression almost pained. "Oh..." She quickly pulled on a pair of pants and a shirt, not wanting to torment him any more than she already had. "Okay then, let's go see what there is to eat."

 

 

Hiei stood, saying nothing of the thoughts that were running through his mind. He definitely had an appetite but it wasn't for anything that was down in the kitchen. 'Oh well, eventually. If the wait doesn't kill me in the meantime.' He looked at Kagome in surprise when she slipped her hand into his and lead him out of the room. He never was one for public affection but perhaps this could be allowed. He knew that Yusuke was awake, having heard him moving around only a few minutes before. To his mind this was all to the good, now the Toushin would know that Kagome was his and always would be. Perhaps then Yusuke would give up this foolish idea that he could win Kagome away from him. The sound of a glass shattering pulled him out of his thoughts. Kagome had stopped suddenly and he almost ran into her. He looked into the kitchen to see Yusuke staring at the two of them, pain radiating from every inch of his aura.

 

 

Kagome let go of Hiei's hand and began to walk carefully around the shattered glass. "Yusuke are you okay?" Her hand reached out to touch his arm but stopped when he flinched away from her. "Yusuke?" The look that he leveled at her made her step backwards, he almost seemed mad at her for some reason. What had she done to earn such a reaction? She took another step away from him, stopping when she came into contact with Hiei's chest.

 

 

Hiei wrapped his arms around her, feeling her uncertainty echoing through the bond. There was no fear there, she knew that Yusuke wouldn't hurt her but that didn't mean she understood why he was reacting this way. If there was one thing he could fault her on it was being blind to the feelings others had for her. Of course, that steamed from her trips to the past as well, feeling like she was inadequate for so long. "He'll be fine Kagome. It's time he stopped wanting something he can never have."

 

 

Yusuke clenched his fist and forced back a growl, he knew it would come to this. Kurama had told him as much but that didn't stop the ache in his chest as he stood there looking at Kagome. She seemed so confused, like she didn't understand what he felt for her and there Hiei was, rubbing salt in an open wound, taunting him over something that he wanted. He wanted nothing more than to punch Hiei, taking that smug look off of his face but he couldn't. Not if he ever wanted to have a chance at having any sort of relationship with her in the future. Not only would it piss Hiei off but Kagome wasn't likely to accept the reason why he would attack him. "This isn't over Hiei." Without waiting for a response he turned and walked out of the room, intent on leaving. He needed to get out of the house before he did something that they all would regret.

 

 

Kagome turned a questioning look over to Hiei. "What did he mean by that?" She knew there were probably some hard feelings between them still for what had happened but she had hoped that Hiei had forgiven him as well as her. He had been under the influence too, he couldn't exactly be blamed for that night. "You aren't still mad at him are you? It wasn't his fault either."

 

 

She knelt down and began to pick up the pieces of glass on the floor but Hiei stopped her. Kurama would probably be unhappy about his dishware but that wasn't his problem, the mess could wait for a minute. He lead her over to the table and sat her down for a talk. "I'm not going to lie to you, there are still unresolved issues between myself and Yusuke. They stem from that night but it's gone far beyond it. The fool fancies himself in love with you and thinks that he can challenge me as your mate. He's been hoping that I wouldn't come back, thinking he could take my place."

 

 

Kagome shook her head, it just wasn't possible for Yusuke to be in love with her. He'd never said anything to that affect before. Sure, he was a close friend but that's all that there was to it. Up until recently he'd had Keiko, he had no reason to look at her like that and if he did now it was likely only a rebound thing. Nothing serious. "I don't know about that Hiei, Yusuke's a great friend and all but why could he possibly want me?"

 

 

Hiei sighed and shook his head, she could be completely blind to the things that went on around her at times. "For the same reason I do woman. Forget what you believed in the past, it wasn't true then and it isn't true now. Yusuke wants you because you are everything that a demon could desire in a mate. His reaction was because he sensed my mark upon you and the bond that it stands for. He cannot touch you now, not without my express consent."

 

 

Kagome could only stare at him in disbelief once she realized that he was serious. How long had Yusuke been harboring feelings for her and why had he not said anything? These past few weeks had to be torture on him then if what Hiei said was true. Was that why he had been so adamant about staying by her side? Another thought hit her, if Hiei had known that Yusuke wanted her then was that the reason he had marked her? To make sure that Yusuke couldn't make any more moves on her? Her gaze shifted to the floor as she thought about it. Hiei was possessive, more possessive than what Inuyasha had ever been and she knew it. She didn't want to believe he would take her as a mate for such a reason though. "Hiei when you marked me... was that.. was it because you love me or... because you knew that Yusuke.."

 

 

Hiei cut her off before she had a chance to finish the question, he had meant every word that he had said back in the bedroom and he wasn't going to allow her to believe otherwise. "Yusuke has nothing to do with why I marked you, don't even think that he does. It's true he wants you just as it's true you are my mate. I marked you because I love you, his feelings on the matter have no bearing on the situation. It is up to him how he chooses to deal with how he feels." He hated having to express his emotions in such a way but he understood that Kagome would need to hear it or she would have a hard time believing what he said.

 

 

Kagome reached out and wrapped her arms around his waist, pulling him closer to her before laying her head against him. "I'm sorry, I shouldn't have doubted you." She felt his hand go into her hair and sighed. Just when things were starting to get better something else happened and once more she was at a loss as for what to think. What would Yusuke do now? She cared for him and didn't want to see him hurt. She also knew that if they started fighting over her someone was going to get hurt. Hiei's patience only went so far and if Yusuke attacked him there was no doubt he would fight back. "Do you think he'll be okay?"

 

 

He considered the question carefully, there were several possibilities he could see happening and he couldn't say he cared for any of them. "It depends on him. The only way he can take you from me is to kill me and I don't see that happening anytime soon. If he challenges me he will be shown his place and back down or I will be forced to kill him." He heard her sharp intake of breath, it wasn't surprising she didn't much like that idea. He really had no desire to kill the man anymore but he wasn't going to allow Yusuke to kill him either.

 

 

Kagome wondered if she talked to Yusuke if it would do any good. He knew how much she loved Hiei, he wouldn't carry it that far would he? Her heart went out to him, this had to be hell on him and she hadn't been helping matters any. If only she had known, maybe she could have tried to put a stop to this somehow. "I don't want either of you hurt."

 

 

Hiei barely picked up her whisper but he could easily pick up the emotion from it. Guilt. She blamed herself for the position that they were all in and it was entirely misplaced. She drew people to her without meaning to, it wasn't something that she could help, it just happened. "We will give him time to come to terms with what he feels, until he figures it out it is pointless to worry about it."

 

 

"Talking about Yusuke I see, I spoke with him last night but I'm not sure how much good I did." Kurama walked into the room and looked at the cup on the floor with a raised brow. "Yusuke didn't take the news of your bonding well did he?" He sighed and shook his head, busying himself with cleaning the glass before someone injured themselves. Still, it could have been worse than just one cup he was sure. With how volatile Yusuke was on most occasions this one glass was a loss he could live with.

 

 

"No, his parting words were 'This is not over' and then he left, most likely to Kuwabara's. Just what did you talk to him about Kurama?" Hiei wasn't surprised that once again the fox was attempting to play mediator, it seemed to be in his nature though he was certain that particular trait did not come from Youko's influence. It would be to his advantage to know just what transpired between the two the night before. It would give him some insight as to what Yusuke was thinking of trying, if anything.

 

 

Kurama remained silent to the question as he finished cleaning up. Was this really the time to have this discussion? Kagome was sitting right there and she was blissfully unaware of some of the intricacies of demon matings though it looked like she might just get a crash course in Demon Mating 101. Especially if Hiei was even willing to consider the idea he posed to Yusuke. This would rage against every instinct that the fire apparition had but it would be worse for Kagome who had been conditioned all her life to believe that any woman who slept with more than one man at a time was a whore and would be considered cheating on Hiei. He sighed, better for her to find out now then later. There was no telling if the situation was going to get any better before it became necessary for her to know. He took a seat in a chair opposite from Kagome though his gaze was locked on Hiei. "We talked about demon mating practices, specifically those that involved a primary and secondary male."

 

 

Hiei stared incredulously at Kurama while Kagome looked back and forth between the two of them. His mind raced at that piece of knowledge. "What the hell were you thinking telling him that Kurama? You know what he's going to want now!" The idea was insane, yes it was done but it wasn't something that was done often and to his knowledge never with his kind nor that of the Mazuko. Both of their races were exceptionally territorial about what they considered theirs.

 

 

"I was thinking that it might be the only thing that will stop the two of you from killing each other when his demon blood takes complete possession and challenges you for her. You know as well as I do once that happens one of you will die. Face it Hiei, those are your two choices. Either fight him and risk losing or accept him and work this out between the three of you." Kurama knew that wasn't going to be something that Hiei wanted to hear but it was the truth. He had been there, watching it develop slowly in Yusuke. Eventually his demonic nature would take control and the issue would be forced. The Toushin could control it for now, but it wouldn't always be denied.

 

 

Kagome blinked slowly, was she hearing this right? Obviously there was some things about this mating business that she hadn't heard about before. "Excuse me, are you actually suggesting that they share me? What am I a piece of meat here?" What did they take her for? A harlot? She could just see it now, the fights over who's bed she would share, or worse would they all share one? Her face went red at the very thought.

 

 

"Of course not Kagome. You have to understand that things are done differently when it comes to demons. Having more than one mate is not frowned upon in our culture. It's considered a great honor in fact, to be so desirable to have two powerful demons wanting to claim you as a mate. Now that you are mated to Hiei, technically the final decision is up to him though. Please understand that none of us see you as a piece of meat, the only reason I mentioned it is because Yusuke's instincts are attempting to take control." Kurama wasn't trying to make her feel uncomfortable but she needed to know. If it came down to it she'd have to accept Hiei's decision unless she wanted to risk him dying. Yusuke was powerful, if it came to a serious fight Hiei could be in serious trouble.

 

 

Hiei choked down a growl, Kurama had put him in a very awkward position. He did not have any inclinations to share Kagome whatsoever. I didn't matter that he respected Yusuke nor that even through all of this he still considered him a friend. Now Kagome knew exactly what the possibilities were and he could tell she wasn't any happier about it than he was though probably for slightly different reasons. Kurama had just laid it down that there was no way Yusuke was going to adjust to this, it was a do or die situation for them. He could feel Kagome's anger about to break loose, most likely from the way it had been worded as if she didn't have a choice in the matter. "Are you absolutely certain of this Kurama? If necessary I will remove her from his presence, then he can work on his control. Besides, if I were willing to consider this ridiculous idea he would be no higher than secondary mate. Do you really think that would satisfy him?"

 

 

Kagome turned to Hiei with wide eyes. He actually sounded as if this could be a possibility! Was it possible that Yusuke could really lose his ability to control himself? Images flashed through her mind of the times Inuyasha went full demon on the group and lost the ability to do anything but kill. A shudder wracked her body as she imagined Yusuke doing the same thing. She knew of the power he had locked inside of him. If the same thing were to happen Hiei would most likely die, leaving her alone. There would be no way she could even look at Yusuke after that, not if he killed Hiei. Her anger died quickly leaving a feeling of loss and despair causing Hiei to look down at her sharply.

 

 

"Unfortunately I am Hiei, you can try to separate them for a time and hope that changes things but you know what the chances are of that happening. Whatever it is that you plan to do, I suggest you make your decision soon before the choice is taken away from you." Kurama knew it was unlikely that Yusuke's feelings or that of his demonic side would change but they were welcome to try. The sooner the better in his opinion if they were going to attempt it. He couldn't imagine the strain that this was putting on Kagome right now. Hiei was going to have to be the one to convince her that he wasn't going to hate her if they were forced to bring Yusuke into the relationship.

 

 

Hiei sighed and pulled away from Kagome. It would seem they weren't going to get to spend the time alone that he had been hoping for after all. "So be it, we leave within the hour. Mukuro isn't expecting me back so soon but going into the Makai is better than sitting here waiting." His mind went back to Mukuro's comment about meeting Kagome. He could only hope that went well. Both women were exceedingly powerful though in vastly different ways. If they were to take a dislike to each other all hell was certain to break loose.
