Chapter Seventeen

Kagome's voice was barely a whisper, she didn't want him angry right now. "It's Yusuke." If he found out about the note that Yusuke sent that could easily piss him off and then he might go hunting Yusuke down but what could she tell him? He wouldn't accept it if she said that there was nothing wrong. Her mouth opened but then shut again. She just didn't know what to say.

Kurama decided to step in since Kagome was obviously having such difficulties. "Shizuru stopped by at Yusuke's request. He was concerned for her and needed to know that she was okay. It forced Kagome to accept what you told her earlier today and she's having difficulties coming to terms with it." Kurama hoped that would satisfy the apparition, he really didn't want to introduce Hiei to his more hardy vines. Most of them were hardly suitable for attempting to restrain him but he did have a couple varieties that would work in an emergency.

Hiei looked suspiciously at him, unsure if he was telling the truth or not. With the kitsune it was always difficult to tell, he did after all have plenty of practice. He looked to Shizuru and she merely nodded before looking at Kagome again. It would explain the guilt that was coming through the bond but why would she try and block him? Unless she didn't want him rushing back thinking something was wrong, which was exactly what he did. Well, it couldn't be helped now. "Hn, do not concern yourself with his feelings for you. We will give him time to reconsider his position and then determine our course of action from there."

Shizuru looked at Hiei skeptically. "So you're actually considering this double mating thing or whatever it is you guys were talking about?" She didn't know if she could possibly see it. She doubted Kagome would do it unless there was no other choice. If it came down to them fighting each other to the death then yes, but under any other circumstances? She doubted it somehow. Yusuke, he seemed to be agreeable to the solution but she believed a lot of that was the history that he had with Hiei. The fire apparition was another problem entirely. She just couldn't see him sharing, under any circumstances.

"So the fool told you did he? It is no matter, I am considering it but only if there is no other option. Tell him when you see him that I am more than capable of seeing to my mate's safety. He shouldn't concern himself." Hiei knew that wasn't likely to make Yusuke too happy when he heard the message but it was true. Besides, he really didn't want to see the Toushin concerning himself so much that they received a surprise visit when Yusuke found out they went into the Makai. Kagome was never meant to venture there, it wasn't exactly the safest of places to take her but seeing as their destination was Mukuro's the threat towards her was greatly reduced.

"Right." Shizuru's voice was sarcastic, she wasn't going to repeat that word for word. They didn't need Yusuke getting pissed off over something so trivial as Hiei's taunting words, especially if he happened to be in her living room at the time. "I'll figure out something to tell him. I don't know much about how you guys do these things but for what it's worth, make a decision soon. He's hurting badly, even Kazuma is worried about him if that tells you anything."

Kagome said nothing as she stood from her seat and collected the clothes that Hiei had brought back for her. She left them downstairs as she returned to her room and began to finish packing. Could she do it? That was the biggest question in her mind. She wasn't certain how she would handle the emotional overload if Hiei accepted this idea. But if she didn't things could turn out so much worse. She hated being put in this position yet she didn't know who to direct her anger towards. This aspect of it certainly wasn't Hiei's doing, nor could Yusuke control what his instincts were telling him. And Kagome was well aware of the fact that when it came to love you just can't control what your heart wants. Kagome's hand sought out the jewel on it's thin chain. Sometimes she had to wonder if her years as a shard hunter were easier than what she was going through now. It was a hard call, each one had their heartaches that she had to endure.

Hiei stood in the doorway and watched her as she seemed to go into her own little world. So many emotions came off of her and echoed down through their bond, he had to shake his head. He couldn't blame her for half of them, he wouldn't be surprised if his own worry over what was going to happen were affecting her. He just hid his emotions better than she did. Could he fight Yusuke and win? It was a tough question to answer, a lot would depend on the circumstances of the fight. He may be impulsive and overly cocky at times but in this instance he had to take a lesson from Kurama and try and think rationally about this. If he assumed wrong and he lost, not only would his life be forfeit but Kagome would be alone once more. He was under no illusions about what Kagome would do to Yusuke if he were to fall. She would purify the Toushin regardless of whether she wanted to or not. The emotional backlash from a full mating bond being severed would drive her to the breaking point and not even Yusuke would be able to withstand the holy energy she would unleash in her pain.

He needed some time to think this over, and then ask her what she wanted to do. Even though theoretically the final decision was up to him he wasn't about to make that choice without learning what she wanted. He walked up beside her, knowing that she was too deep in thought to notice his presence. "We should be going. By the time we cross the border it will be dark."

Kagome nodded and grabbed the straps to her bag. She almost laughed as she remembered how many times she had gone through this before, only then it was to go to the past instead of another realm. Well, it was sure to be interesting if nothing else. "We're all set I think. Lead the way." Kagome followed him out of the bedroom and back downstairs. Kurama looked up when they walked down, Shizuru had already left.

It would seem they were ready to go, it was strange. He preferred the peace and quiet of living alone but he had quickly adapted to Kagome's presence in his house. He was going to miss not having her there anymore but it was for the best right now. He walked gracefully over to where they stood and smiled down at her. She was looking so much better now that Hiei was back, for that he was grateful. It meant less worry on his part. "You take care of yourself while you are over there."

Kagome smiled and nodded at him, she'd be fine. Hiei wouldn't take her there if she'd be at any great risk and she could handle herself until he got there if anything did happen. "We'll be fine. I'll miss you." She stepped forward and wrapped her arms around him tentatively, unsure if he would be comfortable with her hugging him. She felt his arms wrap around her as well and smiled. Strangely enough she didn't feel any displeasure coming from Hiei which made her happy. However she almost drew back when she felt Kurama's youki skyrocket. She quickly settled though when she realized what had happened, her cheek now rested against a white silk tunic.

Youko's eye's locked with Hiei's as he held onto her, neither one willing to look away. He knew that Hiei was well aware of how he felt about Kagome but he didn't care. She was mated now and he wouldn't do anything to upset her happiness but at the same time he was going to make sure Hiei was well aware of his position on the entire situation. 'I know that you can hear me Hiei so listen well. If she gets hurt again while under your care, I will not be as lenient as Kurama.'

'Your threat is not needed Youko. I will protect what is mine, any who dares to touch her will be given no mercy.' Hiei didn't bother to comment further, knowing it would just delay them further. He also knew that the kitsune was including him in on that threat though he wasn't surprised. It was of no matter though, he had no intention of hurting her like that again. He'd made a promise, he would stick by it. "We must be going."

Youko nodded and released her but not before running his fingers through her hair a final time. Sometimes it was time to set aside impossible dreams it would seem. "Safe journey, if you have need of us call." Youko debated whether or not to offer to go with them but knew that it wouldn't be accepted. Besides, his human counterpart was already telling him that he couldn't keep doing this to himself.

"Behave yourself Youko, when we come back I don't want to hear how much of a headache you gave Kurama." Kagome eyes gleamed mischievously, she knew that Youko was likely to do just that. In this instance, Youko was predictable if nothing else.

Youko shook his head and became the picture of innocence. "Why Kagome, I would never consider doing such a thing." His ears twitched slightly and immediately Kagome's attention was drawn to them, it was her one weakness.

However before Kagome could ask him to lean down Hiei placed his hand on her arm. "Enough you two, it's time to go. We will return in a few months. See what you can do on this end with Yusuke." Youko's nod was his only response before Hiei was leading her out the door. Once it was shut behind them he wasted no time picking her up and racing off towards the border.

Hiei was glad she didn't protest when he picked her up like that. It would be much faster for them to get there this way and he wouldn't have to worry quite so much about something attempting to attack her if they walked though this position would make it a bit more interesting for them if they had to fight. Kagome didn't seem to mind though, she just clutched her back tighter and laid her head on his chest.

A few hours later saw them at the fortress without any complications. There were a few raised eyebrows as Hiei walked in carrying her but they wisely kept their mouths shut. 'Kagome wake up, we're here.'

Kagome opened her eyes slowly and realized that they had stopped. "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to fall asleep." She looked around curiously once Hiei had set her on her feet, following closely behind him as he lead her to his private quarters. Her miko powers slowly rose in her as she walked along in response to the sheer amount of youkai in the area.

"Relax, none here will touch you." Hiei knew that she was on edge and with good reason. She didn't exactly have a good track record with youkai from what he saw of her memories. Still, he would dispose of any threat before it had a chance to come near her. He stopped in front of one of the last doors in the corridor and pushed it open allowing her to go through first.

It was a modest room which wasn't surprising considering whose room it was. Hiei never was one for demanding fancy accommodations, he had always accepted whatever it was she wanted to do for decorating at the house. He really couldn't care less. The only thing he indulged in was bed linens, preferring the feel of velor once Kagome had introduced him to the material. It was something that carried over here into the Makai as well, causing Kagome to smile when she sat down on the edge of the bed.

She watch him go and sit in the windowsill, gazing out into the night sky. He hadn't bothered with turning the lights on, plenty of moonlight streamed into the room. He seemed a bit preoccupied and it was making her a bit uncomfortable. "Hiei? Are we really going to be here for a few months?" The thought didn't necessarily appeal to her but she wasn't going to argue too strongly. She wanted to be able to see her family, especially with her grandfather's health problems but it would seem that she would have to wait.

Hiei turned to look at her, moving from his spot at the window. He sat down on the bed next to her and proceeded to remove his cloak and then his boots. "I know this isn't exactly what we had planned but we will remain here as long as is necessary. Tomorrow I will need to report and Mukuro has already said she desires a meeting with you. After that we will determine how long our stay here will be."

Kagome nodded as she listened to him, she wasn't surprised really. Of course Mukuro would want to speak to her, Hiei was close to her in some form though she wasn't quite sure what exactly their relationship was. Certainly not lovers but friends? Or was it a strictly working relationship? She disliked not knowing things like this but she trusted him and if he was certain she had nothing to worry about from Mukuro then she would accept it. "I understand, I was just hoping to see my family soon."

Hiei watched her stand slowly and begin to pull off her clothing. His eyes followed her every move as she then began to search in her bag for the nightgown that she had packed. He wanted to be able to tell her to leave it off but refrained, occasionally he was woken at the oddest hours and there was no sense in having to search for clothing on the chance that Mukuro decided to summon them tonight. While he didn't care much, he doubted Kagome would feel the same way he would if they were found to be nude. "We can return for that, provided it's not for long." He knew she missed her family and he would not deny her the opportunity to visit them.

"Thank you Hiei. That means a lot to me." Her tone was wistful as she climbed back up onto the bed and slid underneath the blankets. Hiei was beside her in moments, wrapping his arms around her. Slowly she felt the tension of the day bleed away as he held her and finally gave in to slumber never noticing how Hiei continued to watch over her as she slept.

He knew that he only had a few hours until he would have to leave her. Mukuro wasn't exactly the type to sleep in and no doubt she already knew he had returned and brought Kagome with him. That alone was probably the only reason she hadn't called for him the moment they walked into the compound. He was thankful that she hadn't, having his arms around his mate was far preferable to discussing why they were here so early. Reluctantly he allowed his eyes to close as he pulled her closer. The morning brought new complications, namely the fact that Kayane was down in the lower levels and he wanted to get a look at this human who would soon die by his hand.

He woke a few hours later and sighed, it was time for him to get up and go about his business. Kagome would be fine here by herself, no one would dare to touch her. He slowly pulled his arms from around her and bit back a mental curse as she shifted slightly and tried to open her eyes. "Go back to sleep, it is not yet dawn." She always had been a light sleeper, hopefully she'd drift off again. There really wasn't much for her to do around the compound and she'd be climbing the walls with boredom before the day was out.

Kagome didn't know why he wanted to get up this early and moved in closer to him, trying to convince him to go back to sleep. "Stay, whatever it is can wait a while longer." She nuzzled into his bare chest and sighed contentedly. For now all of her concerns could wait, as long as she was in his arms she was happy.

As much as Hiei wanted to do just that he knew he couldn't. "I must go, I will return shortly." He slid off of the bed and grabbed his shirt and cloak, getting dressed. His boots followed shortly after and he stood, taking one last look at Kagome before pressing his lips to hers briefly. Knowing if he delayed any longer he wouldn't be leaving, he made his way out the door and to Mukuro's office where he knew she would be waiting. He didn't bother to knock on the door, he was one of the few that were allowed such liberties.

Mukuro looked up when he walked into the room, a small smile on her face. "You are back far sooner than I expected. Tell me, is it because you missed my company or is there something going on in the Ningenkai that I should know about? I was certain that I was going to have to make a trip there in order to meet your mate and now here she is in the Makai." She did laugh at the look of indignation on his face at her first comment. While they probably would have done quite well together if they had ever decided to become a couple her time was long past. Before Kagome had come into the picture he hadn't been ready for such a commitment and once the miko had made an appearance there was no doubt that he was intrigued by the girl. Still she had sat and watched the subtle changes that happened in him and decided that if this Kagome made him happy then she would support whatever choice he made.

Hiei rolled his eyes, it would figure that she was in the mood to tease him this morning. Perhaps he should have stayed in bed, then at least all he would be listening to was Kagome's breathing. "If it was your company I desired I never would have left."

Mukuro brushed off the sharp remark without comment. It would seem as if someone was rather put out with having to get up this morning though she was surprised he was standing in her office this early all things considered. "Okay so why are you here then? Frankly I didn't expect you back for at least another week. I would have sent a messenger to you when Kayane was ready for you to speak with him."

Hiei took a seat and sighed, she had a right to know what was going on. Especially if they were going to be staying there for a while. It would also be important for her to know on the chance that Yusuke showed up. No doubt she'd be rather irritated if he made an appearance and wasn't in his right mind. "Things with Yusuke are a lot worse than I originally suspected. Kurama confirmed it, his demon instincts are trying to push to the surface and he has chosen Kagome to be his mate. He had already given her the mark with their one night together, I'm going to assume it is only a matter of time before his Mazuko blood asserts itself and demands that he fight for her."

Mukuro nodded, she suspected as much when she had been told he had bitten Kagome. "This presents quite a problem then. What do you intend to do about it?" She knew it was only a matter of time before Yusuke showed up on her doorstep. Between her and Hiei she had no doubts that they could take him down if necessary but she knew that Hie would not allow her to interfere in a fight between them.

Hiei frowned, he'd been asking himself the same thing for a while now. "We'll stay here for now and see if he gets it under control. Kurama told him about the secondary mating practice but I don't think Kagome is ready to even consider the possibility."

She sat in silence for several long moments. For Kurama to have done such a thing meant that this was indeed serious, he wouldn't give the man that hope unless he was certain there was no other choice. Hiei wasn't the type to share, everyone knew this. Then again neither was Yusuke, so would they be able to work something like this out? "What about you? I've never pegged you as the type to share but if Kurama is right Yusuke might kill you if you do not."

"I'm well aware of that." As much as Hiei hated to admit it she had a point. Even through all the training he had undertaken he was still only a middle S class apparition where Yusuke was pushing the upper levels of S class. It would be a difficult fight if both were serious. He sighed, his life was much to complicated anymore. "I have no desire to kill Yusuke but if I have to then I won't hold back. Much depends on Kagome, if she is not willing to consider the possibility then I will have no choice but to fight. Her feelings on the subject are that of a humans, much different than our own."

"I see." Mukuro always believed that humans were rather strange. If Kagome were a demon she would be thrilled to have two powerful males fighting over her like that. If she was not receptive to the second suit it would be up to her to turn the second male away. If she was, then the decision rested solely on her mate. But being human threw the entire stability of what was supposed to happen off balance. Now it rested on Hiei's shoulders alone, though he was still trying to be respectful of her feelings. Whether he liked to admit it or not, Hiei had changed greatly since he had met Kagome. "Very well, I think we are through here. I wish to speak to Kagome alone. I'm sure you can find something to keep yourself busy."

Hiei looked at her suspiciously. "What about?" He trust Mukuro to a point, he didn't think that she would purposely harm his mate but Kagome wasn't exactly what he would consider stable at the moment. He wasn't about to let her get hurt, even from Mukuro.

"Calm down Hiei, I only want to meet her. If she is to be staying here I do have that right. Think of it as girl talk." Mukuro could understand his concern but this was something she was going to do with or without his consent if they were to remain there. She wanted to see for herself just what kind of woman Kagome was.

"Fine, I will be down in the regeneration room looking over this male. I don't have to tell you if you upset her I will be most displeased." He waited to make sure his message was received before walking out of the room.

Mukuro watched him go and shook her head. It was a wonder he wasn't demanding to accompany her but then again, perhaps he was showing her just how much trust he had in her. She just hoped that he would forgive her for what she was about to do.
