Chapter Eighteen

It didn't take her long to make her way to Hiei's quarters, she had made certain to give him a room relatively close to her own and her office in case she had a need to speak with him. She could hear movement within and new that the woman was awake. She knocked once and opened the door, it would seem that Kagome had made herself at home. She was already up and dressed, the bed made and looked to be in the process of putting her clothing away.

Kagome turned upon hearing the door open and stared at the woman curiously. She knew exactly who this was, Hiei had described his boss to her once. No doubt this was Mukuro, one of the few women that had gained Hiei's respect. Kagome set the shirt down that she held in her hands and walked away from the closet, never taking her eyes off of the woman in front of her. "Hello Mukuro."

Mukuro nodded at the greeting, not in the least surprised that she hadn't attached any honorific in front of her name. Hiei never did, it was something that she was used to. At least from him anyway. "Kagome. I've been waiting for the opportunity to meet you though I never imagined it would be under such circumstances." She allowed herself the opportunity to look over the human. There wasn't anything extraordinarily pretty about her that would warrant the attention of demons such as Hiei and Yusuke. Her eyes were unusual enough for a human but that in itself wouldn't do it. However the power that was locked within the girl was another story. Most of it seemed dormant at the moment, she wondered if Kagome knew how to use it.

"Yes, I must say I wasn't expecting to ever come here though things happen." Kagome couldn't help but think that she was being evaluated somehow. It was the way that Mukuro was staring at her, it made her slightly uncomfortable but she wasn't going to give that away by fidgeting. She had to admit that the feel of the woman's youki set her nerves on edge. Most demons did when she first met them, it would take a while for her to get accustomed to the feel of them to truly feel comfortable in their presence.

"Yes, it would seem things are becoming quite tense back in the Ningenkai. Tell me, how do you feel about Hiei?" Mukuro watched the surprise cross the girls face and was curious as to why the question earned that reaction. Anything that involved Hiei on this large of a level automatically became her concern whether he agreed to it or not.

Kagome stared at her for several long moments before answering the question. She wasn't about to spill her heart to someone she had just met, she didn't give a damned who she was. "I love him, it's simple." It was the most direct answer she could give. Sure, she could have gone into much more detail but what was the point? What went on between her and Hiei was no ones concern but their own.

"Is it? You should know by now that nothing is simple when it comes to Hiei. Do you even realize the position that you have put him in with what happened between you and Yusuke?" Mukuro glared at the girl, she wasn't about to be brushed off when she came here looking for answers.

Kagome's eyes turned hard as she stared at Mukuro. "Hiei knows exactly what happened between myself and Yusuke and he knows that it wasn't something that either of us could control. I've already apologized for my part in it but it's not something I can go back and change no matter how much I want to."

Mukuro waved her hand dismissing what Kagome had said. "Foolish girl, I speak not of when you slept with him. I'm talking about what happened afterwards. Why did you not discourage him from wanting you? You had to know that he was looking at you as more than a friend." She was certain the girl had known, Hiei wouldn't pick a mate that was stupid and the girl looked to be intelligent. So there had to be a reason why she hadn't told Yusuke that she wasn't interested before things got out of hand.

Kagome walked over to a chair and sat down. "I didn't know what Yusuke was doing until recently. He's always acted like that, he really wasn't doing anything different." She mentally kicked herself once more, it was true she hadn't noticed anything different but how much of that was because she shut everything out?

"Somehow I doubt that but since I wasn't present I won't argue the point with you. The question is, what do you plan to do about it now that it's come up?" This was Mukuro's real reason for coming here. She had to know how far this human would go to keep her mate safe. Hiei led a dangerous life as it was, adding things to it would not help things in the least.

Kagome looked at her uncertainly, she didn't know how to answer the question. She still didn't know if she would be able to accept having two mates or not. Her mind went back to the letter, besides, Yusuke had said he would be fine didn't he? Even if they could only be friends. So there was a good chance that they were all wrong, Yusuke wouldn't want to hurt her anyway and he knew how much she loved Hiei. "I don't know what to do about it. I think Yusuke will be fine, it might take some time but he'll get over it and then we no longer have to worry. We just have to wait until then."

Mukuro stalked up to Kagome, grabbing her by the front of her shirt and lifting her out of her chair only to pin her against the wall. She ignored how Kagome's hands came up to try and pry herself loose. "I never thought that Hiei would pick someone so stupid. Clearly his judgment has gone to hell if you are the best he could come up with. I should do him a favor and dispose of you now."

Kagome could feel the woman's ki picking up in the room as she spoke and her own flared in response. Pink light erupted from her body forcing Mukuro to drop her to the ground. Kagome glared at her from her spot next to the wall as Mukuro stared at her burned hands. "If you think I'll be easy for you to kill then I'm happy to say you're going to be disappointed. That was a warning, touch me again and I don't give a shit who you are I'll purify you to the seventh layer of hell and your soul can rot right next to Naraku's."

A brief smile crossed Mukuro's face though it was cold. She had to hand it to Kagome, the girl had guts and the power to back up her threat. Even now her ki level was on par with her own and she had yet to tap into the jewel. Mukuro knew that her time was short, Hiei had picked up on the energy radiating from the room and was making his way towards them at a rapid speed. "Yusuke will not be fine as you put it. Eventually he will come for you and Hiei will be forced to fight for you. I refuse to lose one of my best men because you are too blind to realize the truth of what's going on around you. Get your priorities in line girl, if you love him as much as you say you do then accept the fact that you are going to have two mates and drop your human morals crap."

"And what if Hiei's the one who refuses to accept Yusuke? What then? You would lay this all on me without asking him what he wants to do?" Kagome was beyond pissed that Mukuro had dared to touch her and now had the audacity to speak to her in such a way.

Mukuro shook her head. "You truly know nothing do you? Hiei might not like it but he will accept it. He doesn't want to lose you and he really has no desire to fight Yusuke. His decision hinges completely on you. If you choose wrongly I won't hesitate to kill you myself to stop this from happening and trust me, you'll be dead long before you have a chance to purify me. Think on it, expect me to return for your answer in a few days." She turned towards the door and stopped as it opened abruptly, Hiei standing there looking like he was ready to kill someone.

He had felt Kagome's rising emotions first and then Mukuro's ki. Immediately he had left the Regen room and began the trek back to his room, knowing that's where the two women would be. He cursed himself for allowing Mukuro to speak with her alone, it wouldn't be a mistake he made again. Suddenly he felt Kagome's ki flare as well and knew that whatever was going on wasn't going to be pretty. He wasn't sure what the hell had set them off but he needed to get there before one of them killed the other. He arrived at the door and heard Mukuro say she would return in a few days. "I want to know what the hell is going on in here and I want to know now."

Mukuro smiled at him before walking past him. "Nothing to concern yourself over Hiei. We've come to an understanding. That's all you need to know." She was stopped however when Hiei grabbed her arm.

He stared at the burn marks for several seconds, knowing exactly what they were. His gaze went to Kagome, taking note of how she was still standing next to the wall and watching Mukuro warily. Even Kuwabara would have been able to figure out what had happened. Hiei glared at Mukuro as he released her arm. "Like hell, you attacked her. I want to know why."

She shook her head and looked over at Kagome, satisfied by what she saw. "It was a warning nothing more Hiei. As I said, we've come to an understanding. Now if you don't mind I have business to attend to as do you I'm certain." She brushed past him and out the door shutting it behind her. No doubt Hiei would find out from Kagome what had happened. Whatever she decided to tell him it wasn't her concern. The warning had been given.

Kagome moved away from the wall once Mukuro was gone and looked down at her shirt. It was ruined now, torn when she was being held against the wall. She sighed and began pulling it off, that was the last thing she had been expecting that was for certain. She tossed it on the bed and went to the closet, looking for another one. She was certain that Hiei wanted answers as to what went on, she could feel the curiosity and anger coming off of him. "She wanted to know if I was going to accept Yusuke or not."

Hiei was tempted to go after Mukuro and demand to know just what the hell she thought she was doing bringing that up now. The woman was too nosy for her own damned good. Hiei picked up the shirt that Kagome had dropped noticing the tears. His voice was softer than usual as he thought about how easily he might have lost her today. "What did you tell her?"

Kagome stopped what she was doing and walked over to him wrapping her arms around him. "I told her I thought Yusuke would get over it and she called me stupid for thinking that. He won't will he?"

Hiei shook his head, there just wasn't any getting around it. "No, he won't. I leave the decision to you. We can accept him or I can fight him. Just tell me what you want."

Kagome stared at him thoughtfully for several long moments, trying to feel what it was that he wanted her to say but she couldn't pick anything up off of him. He was purposefully blocking her, forcing her to make the decision on her own. "Hiei I can't lose you and I'm afraid. If you fight him he might kill you. I know you're strong but I'm still afraid. If it means that you'll be safe.... I'll do it.. Just please... please don't hate me for it."

Hiei knew then and there that he could never hate her... for this or anything else. She loved him enough to put aside her human morals and accept that both he and Yusuke loved her and wanted her. For him, the time for talking was at an end. "I would never hate you." He growled softly before claiming her lips with his.

Kagome melted against him, her mouth opening to allow his tongue to brush against hers. She could feel that this was different than the way that he had kissed her before. There was always the undercurrent of raw passion but this time it was tempered with something else, something far more gentle. She felt his hands slide over the bare skin of her back. His touch was warm and soft, sending a shiver of excitement through her body. One of her hands came up to cup his face as she returned the kiss, she poured all of her love for him into it.

Hiei felt her emotions plainly through the bond and removed the hold that he had on his own, allowing them to answer hers. He pulled his lips away from hers for a moment, wanting to give her a chance to back out of what was about to happen before it got too much further. He was pleasantly surprised when she pulled him back down, not wanting to stop. He lowered her to the bed gently and stood up, ignoring her questioning look as he removed his cloak and shirt. Excitement raced through him as she sat up and ran her hands over his bare chest. She seemed rather impatient as she slid her tongue over one of his nipples, knowing that would encourage him to move faster.

Hiei wasted no time in removing his boots, but before he had a chance to go further her hands were slowly unbuckling his belts. He groaned as she kissed her way down his chest and stomach, lightly running her tongue over the bare skin as she slid his pants down over his hips. His hands tangled in her hair as she continued lower, guiding her to his arousal.

His hands grasped the flimsy silk and shredded it, exposing her center to him. "Much better." He looked into her stormy blue eyes when she stopped moving her fingers and raised a questioning brow. She moved along with him but it wasn't enough, he had denied himself this pleasure for far too long. He unwrapped her legs and threw them up over his shoulders before grabbing her hips and moving even deeper within her. Sweat began to cover both of their bodies, the sounds of their joining filling the room and spilling out into the hallway. He watched as Kagome slid a hand down to where their bodies were joined and began to rub her jewel once more. He grunted as her walls tightened around his length even harder.
