Eternal Darkness - Chapter 2 - A Face in the Dark

“Yusuke, Hiei, Kurama…I'm going to tell you a story. Just listen and then I'll tell you why the story is important okay?” The normally chipper grim reaper was pale and shaking. She had just come back from a meeting with Koenma. To appease her, the young men nodded allowing her to continue her story.

“348 years ago under the light of the full blood moon four children were born. They were the prophesized Shikon children. Children born for the sole purpose of housing the immeasurable power of the legendary Shikon No Tama. King Eisu, King Enma's father, knew of the prophesy…He found the children before they were even four hours old. After killing their family he blood bound the infants to him…” Yusuke's blank look stopped her from continuing.

“Binding someone with blood is to control them. They have to obey you and to hurt you is to hurt them. By blood binding them he was in control of them. Even when they could control their unimaginable power they could not harm him because it would likely kill them. From that moment the Shikon siblings became his slaves. He raised them alongside Enma, gave them the same schooling and treated them kindly. When they came of age he placed them in the honorary position of king's bodyguards. It was for show everyone know what he would use them as…assassins…I knew them at that time…Once they tried to refuse an order to kill a human lord…Melanctha died before they caved and killed him…As King Eisu crept further and further into madness he ordered more and more killings…They were helpless to refuse him…The next several years are littered with deaths…Tainn the youngest and most powerful found a way to protect her siblings from the blood oath…When Eisu ordered the death of about half the Makai and Ningenkai she acted. Without a thought to her safety she protected her siblings and drove her blade through Eisu's black heart.” She paused remembering that distant day. Her hands clenched remembering the pain that had filled her friends' features as they watched their sister die.

“By destroying the blood tie and her master she was committing suicide. But her power was so great that she didn't die. She had killed her master but had lived. Many feared that power and wanted her destroyed. Others hated the Shikon assassins for the deaths that could be laid at their feet. Either way they were in grave danger. Enma became King and had to make a decision. He placed his friends in a stasis spell…When that failed after I think it was after 132 years he separated them and placed them in the Ningenkai with their powers, memories and even physical appearances changed…Using the hush of the Shikon he placed a failsafe that would restore their powers, memories, and appearances when they blood of Tainn mixed with the completed jewel while under duress.” She broke off watching the spirit detectives.

“That's a nice story and all Botan but what's it got to do with us?”

“Koenma has reported the lack of results to his father and Enma decided you need help…”

“You can not mean that he is sending…”

“The Shikon assassins….Yes, they'll be here tomorrow…He expects us to meet them and spare with them. Says he'll be watching.” Now they knew why she was pale. The lord of the spirit realm was sending his personal bodyguards, legendary warriors, to help his son's spirit detectives. This was bad.

“Why did we agree to do this?” Adair leaned towards her sister trying to ignore the crowd that had gathered.

“He's our friend and he protected us…Besides we couldn't let darkness rule for a thousand years could we?” Loch waved to a pretty young girl who blushed and looked away.

“Once we find the spirit detective we'll figure out what's going on here.” Souta ignored the looks he was getting from the girls with practiced ease.

Kagome watched the crowd watching them. She wondered what they were seeing. Jean walked forwards slowly; unsure of herself; the new students gave off an aura that said dangerous. They all looked remarkable unalike for siblings. The oldest Souta had white gold hair that shone with an inner light. His eyes were a bright gold that seemed darker for the golden skin of the boy. Loch the second youngest had teal blue eyes that shifted into sea foam blue green and back again like the ebb and flow of the tides. His hair appeared black until the light caught it and showed it for the midnight blue it was. His mouth was drawn into a grin that didn't seem to ever waver. He had an arm slung around his older sister Adair. She was a beauty. Her hair was a mix of chestnut brown, caramel brown, and light blown with a few red streaks in it. It hung down past her waist almost to her ankles and was done up in two intricate French braids. Her eyes were a startling green not as striking as Shuichi's but stunning in the deep color. Those eyes were focused not on the crowd but on the youngest Higurashi child Kagome. Her hair was the blackest of black and seemed to suck in the light. Her eyes were a crystal grey and filled with pain. Unlike her siblings she was not smiling or even attempting to appear friendly. Jean had her work cut out for her.

“Welcome to Xavier's School. I hope the flight wasn't too bad.” She bowed her head in greeting.

“Not so bad. I'm Loch; this is Adair, Souta, and Kagome. We are honored to be here.” He bowed his head not moving his arm from his sister's shoulders.

“You speak English? Guess you won't need these…” She held out 4 circular disks. “They're auto-translators. Umm…They hook up to the neurons in your brain that control speech and can tell what you know of a language and from there it supplies you with a translation of English into Japanese until you learn English. Pretty effective actually.”

“Ah I speak English my siblings do not have the full grasp of your language yet. So we will need three of those neat translators…Where exactly should they place them?” Jean explained handing them over. Loch spoke rapidly in Japanese telling his siblings to place the small disk just in front of their ears. They were all amazed when the little disks sank into their skin with no pain.

“The translators have the benefit of translating what you say into English unless you will it otherwise. Can you all understand me alright?”

“Souta it hurts…” They youngest Kagome leaned into her older brother. Her words were soft and probably not meant to reach the group.

“I know Shadow…I know…” He held her close moving towards Jean. “I mean no insult but my sister is tired may be rest before viewing the rest of the school?”

Jean was not a stupid child. Her powers were rivaled by only a few and in those brief moments she sensed the pain, loss, and sorrow that surrounded the youngest Higurashi. Her eyes lacked any life and in them Jean saw utter defeat. Repressing a shiver the redhead nodded motioning a few people forward. “Kitty and Kurt will show you to your rooms. I will be by in a few hours to continue the tour.” With a numb mind the telepath watched them leave. She didn't bother to check the tears that steamed down her face.

“Jean what's wrong?” Scott asked carefully reaching out to touch her. Thankful for the contact she moved into his embrace.

“She's broken Scott…More than broken…She's shattered…Her eyes are dead no sparkle of life…Someone so alive looking feeling so dead…What happened to her?” Scott had no answer so he simply held her closer as if that could ward off the thoughts she had glimpsed.

“So like you are all siblings? That has to be cool.”

“It has its moments…These translators really come in handy.”

“Vell ve did not have dem a few months ago…One of the students helped Ford make them. You'll meet them all later.” Kurt was walking behind them unconsciously playing with his holographic inducer. It was shorting out and the last thing he wanted was to freak out the new students. Lady luck was not so kind to him. While the siblings were watching him the watch chose that moment to go on the fritz and short out. Instantly the normal human teen was replaced by a three fingered fuzzy blue elf complete with tail. Sheepishly Kurt smile giving a little three fingered wave. “Um…Hello?”

“It's still like sketching out ain't it?” Kitty moved to his side ready to defend him if necessary.

“Your watch is a holographic inducer? That is awesome man.” Loch moved close taking in the changes. He was relieved this accounted for the taste of static and the faint buzzing not unpleasant but there none the less. As he watched the watch began working again covering the little elf in a near perfect hologram.

“It vas made for me so I could go to school. I have looked like that my entire life.”

“Makes humans scared doesn't it? Know the feeling called a white leopard to me in the middle of the mall. He was as docile as a kitten but people tried to kill him.”

“You're not like freaked out by his appearance? Most people would be…”

“As one the siblings turned to look at her. “We are not most people.”

“Besides we knew he was hiding something. A holograph is basically light and Souta here is master over all things light. He could see it wrapped around you. Couldn't see what was underneath but knew that what he was seeing wasn't real.”

“Oh well then like um well…”

Kagome moved away from her brother. The sorrow she had seen briefly in Kurt's eyes had drawn her to him. “It pains you doesn't it?” He looked at her confused. “That you aren't human not in the sense Kitty is.” He looked away fists bunching at his side.

“I know the pain you feel separated from everyone neither from this group or the next. If you are willing I can make your appearance human. There would be pain at first because what I do is no illusion. If you accept you will have two forms a humanoid form and your true form.” She watched him closely not knowing why she was helping him. That was not in her mission description.

“You vould do that for me? Vhy?”

“I may not know you very well but you are now my friend. I can see that above all you want to safety and security to travel among the normal humans without fear. I can give you that for almost nothing.” She smiled and her eyes briefly filled with light before it faded once again. He nodded moving closer to her.

“Vhat vill you do?”

Kagome didn't answer she stepped closer placing her lips on his stunned lips. He hesitated only an instant before diving into the kiss. His hands were at her waist and one of hers was at the top of his spine. Her other hand rested comfortable on his chest. She could feel the tiny blue hairs tickling her palms. It was an odd sensation. With a small sigh she drew him closer sucking the energy from him. Her hand ran down the line of his spine. Dimly she could here people gasping and talking but she focused on the task at hand. Under her palms she could feel the fur rippling into skin. She knew others were watching and wondered at what they saw.

When his tail started pulling back into his spine he stiffened. But Kagome wouldn't let him leave she clutched him closer coaxing him with her mouth, lips, and tongue to stay. He didn't move again even when she forced fingers and toes to grow. Tears ran down her cheeks unchecked as she remembered Miroku, his kazaana repairing it. God she missed them.

She pulled away slowly taking her extra energy from him. Before her stood a startled normal looking young man, he thanked her looking at his hands running them over his face and body. Kagome turned away finally noticing the audience. There was a feminine redhead not Jean this one was a demon and male at that. Next to him was another demon a mix if the aura was right. He was only slightly taller than Kagome. Standing somewhat in front of them was a young man that radiated power and confidence. His slicked back hair told her that it was most likely Yusuke, Koenma's lead spirit detective.

Without saying a word she made to move past them. But Yusuke's words stopped her. “Why you crying girl?”

Whirling around she swung at the detective it was the last thing he expected. The blow landed heavily on the side of his jaw sending him crashing to the floor. Tears still filled her eyes but now instead of sorrow they blazed with anger. “My name is Kagome. Not girl, wench, bitch or anything else you can think of.” She spun around walking into the shadows that seemed to reach out to grab her. In an instant she faded from sight.

“Well that was something. Sorry she's going through a rough time and she hates being called girl. You really asked for that.” Loch laughed leaning heavily against his sister. “I'm Loch by the way…Kagome decked you, this is my other sister Adair and our esteemed older brother Souta. Now as we said before we are tired may we please go to our rooms?” The jubilant young man glanced up to see Kitty staring open mouthed at Kurt and said young man still marveling over the changes. Shaking his head Loch laughed again. “Well Yusuke what say you show us to our rooms. I believe we have much to talk about.”

On his feet again the spirit detective watched the odd group. After a brief silent conversation he nodded turning to lead them from the hall and preying eyes.

Botan waited nervously in the room they were going to give Sakda and Narrah. Of course though they were not using those names now, not with everything that had happened. What had Enma told her? Oh yeah he said that Sakda is now Souta, Loch is Narrah's new name, Melanctha is Adair it suits her, and Tainn goes by Kagome now.

Her thoughts were interrupted when the door swung open. “…Is your room Souta and Loch. Kagome and Adair yours is across the hall. Botan? What are you doing in here?” The peppy grim reaper didn't answer her gaze locked with Souta's burning golden one. Slowly he moved forwards his eyes never leaving hers. The kiss he bestowed on her was gentle, sweet, and undemanding.

“I thought you had been replaced.” The golden boy wrapped her in his arm tightly fearing that if he let go she'd disappear again.

“I thought you had died until a few days ago.” She held him just as tightly ignoring the now crowded roomful of occupants.

“As touching as this moment is Kagome will be here soon so I think you should break it up.”

Reluctantly they separated although they still held hands as they moved to sit on the bed. Adair sat on the desk next to Kurama. Loch and Yusuke lounged against the wall stances deceptively calm and relaxed. Hiei was sitting framed in the window he had no change to react as Kagome seemed to fade into the spot next to him. Adair looked around eyes unfocused before nodding slightly. Everything was as it should be.

“My friends know me as Kurama but around others please call me Shuichi. You are the Shikon assassins that Botan told us about?”

Kagome groaned resting her head against her knees. “I hate that name. Enmie gave it to us trying to be cute. His father liked it.”

Loch smiled glancing towards the redhead. “Hai, we were once known as the Shikon assassins. I was once known as Narrah Master of the Seas. But now everyone calls me Loch.”

“I am known as Adair now but once many called me Melanctha Mistress of the Forests. I am pleased to meet you.”

“Souta formerly known as Sakda of the Golden Fire.” Still not letting go of Botan he nodded to each of the spirit detectives.

“I know your name you're Kagome. You pack one hell of a punch.” Kagome smile it was a ghost of a real smile and was gone before anyone realized it was there.

“Hai, my name is Kagome. When I worked for Eisu I was known as Tainn the Death Reaper or Shadow Walker.”

“I am Shuichi Minamino in front of humans. But around my friends and enemies I am Kurama. I house the spirit fox Youko Kurama in this body.”

“Me I'm Yusuke.”

“Hiei.”

“Well talkative bunch aren't you?”

“That is not an issue little brother. Enma sent us to find the demon we will do as he asks.” Adair rubbed her temple where she could feel the headache building.

“Excuse me for asking but how will you find the demon. We have been searching for weeks and except for a brief glimpse we have nothing.” Absently without realizing he was doing it Kurama reached up gently massaging her temple and neck. Others noticed and smirked before looking away.

“We won't have to search for him. He will find us. We have something he wants.”

“Oh yeah what's that?”

Kagome looked up slowly locking eyes with Yusuke. “Me.”
