Eternal Darkness - chapter 3 -

“We won't have to search for him. He will find us. We have something he wants.”

“Oh yeah what's that?”

Kagome looked up slowly locking eyes with Yusuke. “Me.”

Ororo Monroe was finishing up before turning in that night. It was the first night the four new students would be staying in the mansion and Xavier had asked her to check on them just to make sure they were okay. She checked on Yusuke first and found him sprawled across the bed sheet thrown on the floor. His roommate was away due to a family illness he should be back any day. Across the hall from they brash youth his friends slept. Shuichi lay on his stomach arm thrown across the bed. Hiei was not sleeping he sat staring out the window paying no attention to the intrusion.

Further down the hall she checked on Adair and Kagome. Adair was asleep on her back a large vine twined around her extended arm. The youngest Higurashi Kagome sat at the window as well staring into the night shadows. Unlike Hiei she turned staring at the weather witch. Her pale silver eyes glowed in the gloomy room sending shivers of fear racing through Ororo. Silently she closed the door blocking out the sight of those haunted eyes condemning her.

Still uneasy she crossed the hall to check on the Higurashi boys. There was a pale golden light seeping under the door and she could hear the quiet lapping of water against something made of wood. Opening the door just a tiny bit she saw the prankster of the family sleeping on a waterbed. The water inside the bed rose and fell like waves whenever the young man breathed. Across the room Souta lay on top of the sheets. Even from the doorway they weather witch could feel the heat radiating from the young man. He cast the pale glow lighting the interior of the room. With that glow Ororo could make out another person tangled in bed with Souta. As she entered the room she say the bubblegum blue hair and knew without a doubt it was Botan nestled so lovingly in the man's arms. She moved closer intent on waking the young woman and sending her back to her own room. Darkness swallowed her as she moved towards the glowing couple. The nothingness disoriented the weather witch for a moment. When she could see again she realized she was once again outside in the hall. She started for the door intending to get Botan to her own room. Darkness moved swiftly to over take her. “Oh of all the…” She cried out swatting at the shadows.

“Can't let you separate them.” Kagome called out softly stepping into the light. Ororo stopped fighting the shadows and they moved to swirl around the mysterious Kagome.

“I cannot allow her to stay.” Once again the weather witch moved towards the door only to be stopped yet again. This time Kagome stood physically blocking the door one hand reaching behind her back.

“You will leave her where she is. They have been apart for far too long. I will not have Botan ripped from my brother. Not like they were ripped from me.” Her words echoed with buried pain. And although Ororo was not a telepath she saw a flash of a young man with vibrant purple eyes and a small child with eyes as green as the sea.

Shaking off the phenomenon Ororo moved closer towards the door. She never made it, inches from the door she passed out falling into the shadows that rushed to meet her.

When she fell out of the darkness it was into the comfort of her warm soft bed.
Back in the hallway Kagome sank against the wall wanting to cry but knowing it was pointless. There was nothing left in her only the empty shell of who she used to be both as Shadow Walker and Kagome. She had nothing left to give as a result she seemed to sink more and more into the nothingness she controlled.

Safely out of sight Hiei watched the girl fold in on herself. There was no spark in the doll anymore. Gone was the girl who had decked Yusuke she had accepted defeat and was allowing herself to fade into nothing. Hiei snorted with disgust heading back to his room.

“Normally I can sense what a new mutant's ability is but with you four it is cloudy and vague.”

“I am Souta, eldest Higurashi; I have the ability to manipulate energy like sunlight and the energy that was surrounding Kurt. I am also the healer in our group.”

“Multiple abilities?”

“Hai just listen and then we will explain. I am Adair second oldest of our bunch. The forest and earth respond to my call as well as the animals that reside on this planet.”

“My sister can make even the shyest hummingbird talk. I am Loch the forlorn younger son always to be in my big brother's shadow. No I kid but seriously I control water in all its forms…My secondary talent is not one I choose to you often. It is the power of persuasion.”

“This is our sister Kagome the baby of the bunch. As you are a mind reader you can sense that she is having a hard time right now. Some people very close to her were taken from her. She hasn't yet had time to recover from her loss, so please forgive the moodiness.”

“Hai I am Kagome, I can control the darkness that fills the night, the shadows basically anything that has darkness in it. I can also manipulate flesh and blood as you have already seen. And to answer your question, yes multiple talents because unlike your other students we are a family of twins, Adair and Loch, Souta and I. Because of the shared blood we are like Ying and Yang…Um light and dark, earth and water. We balance each other in our strongest abilities.”

“Interesting.” The professor looked like he had received a new puzzle. His eyes were slightly unfocused and his fingers were raised in front of his lips as he tried to figure his newest students out. “The normal routine is out for you four…I will see if we can get some volunteers to face off against you.”

“We'll do it.” Yusuke spoke up from the doorway. He was already dressed to fight along with his companions. Across from Professor Xavier the Higurashi siblings smiled an odd gleam entering there eyes, until they noticed Botan. In an instant they became cold untouchable and unmovable.

“Now Souta I know what you are going to say.” Botan rushed forward tentatively touching her lover's arm. His golden eyes were trained on Yusuke's deep brown eyes as hard and cold as his own. “Please Souta I want to fight.”

“No.” The one word was quietly spoke but easily heard and Botan seemed crush by the sheer force of it.

“But Souta I've been training I'm a lot tougher now…” She broke off at the look of sorrow in his warm golden eyes.

“I have never doubted your ability in a fight my love.” He reached out cupping her cheek as he slowly drew her to his body. When she was close enough he whispered something in her ear. He pulled back receiving her nod as she curled herself around him. “Botan doesn't fight find another.” Arm around his mate the young man walked past the others in the room leaving them to figure it out.

“Who you think they chose as a fourth?” Loch asked calling up his power allowing it to settle around him in a soothing mist.

“Hard to say…They will look for someone who can counter at least one of our abilities…” Adair returned not really paying attention. Her entire being was tuning into the surrounding woods on Xavier's land. When that was completed every bit of earth would come at her call, respond easily to her commands.

“Here they come.” Souta and Kagome spoke together gesturing behind them as Yusuke walked towards them. Both twins were cast a glow that radiated from within. Souta's made him appear more golden as if the radiance of the sun was captured in human flesh.

For Kagome it was a murky and muddy glow like moonlight caught in a puddle. As the others watched the energy seemed to seep together and flood her eyes making them darker than any shadow had the right to be. Souta's energy swam up surrounding him in a hazy golden glow.

“Here take these…” Yusuke and Shuichi tossed two small objects to each Higurashi child. Out in the light the four Higurashi siblings gathered close each one holding the small objects no bigger than a bouncy ball. “Cameras to monitor our fight.”

“You're saying these are cameras?”

“Yeah bub they're cameras.”

“What Logan is trying to say is that these are nano-cameras. The nano technology allows them to act almost as if it were a living being. They will follow and record but will never interfere with the combat. The blood you donated earlier allowed us to genetically code these cameras to each of you. With two cameras per fighter that should allow us to see every angle of the fight and allow you to use your abilities freely.”

Kagome muttered to herself tossing her camera in the air not surprised when it hovered just out of reach. Her second camera hurried to follow the first, smirking Kagome faded into the shadows laughing as the cameras followed. When she appeared again her smile caught the surrounding people off guard. “The genetic code allows them to follow me even into the darkness.”

“If everyone is ready I call dibs on pretty boy.” Loch stated tossing his cameras into the air. The motion brought his daggers into the light.

“Guess again blue wonder pretty boy is all mine.” Adair sank into a crouch for the first time showing the weapons on her back. “After all we must see who the real master of this forest is.”

“Well fine then take him it's not like I had my heart set on facing him. I'll take the dark brooding one then.”

“Hn, wrong I want her.” Hiei pointed his sword at Kagome. She inclined her head letting him know she accepted his challenge. Her hand remained poised behind her back.

“Well fine that leaves Yusuke and Logan well can't fight Yusuke the whole alpha dog thing. That leaves Logan well its better than nothing I guess.” Loch muttered to himself not aware that everyone was listening to his every word. “Alright I call the grease monkey. No one touch him.”

Souta rolled his eyes at his younger brother. “You ready Yusuke we won't go easy on you.”

“Thought you'd never ask.” Yusuke replied cracking his knuckles. Next to him Hiei bathed his blade in a flurry of blade flames. Shuichi called his rose whip to his hand and Logan extended his claws with an audible chink. From the safety of the house Xavier watch the battle begin. Vines and roots shot out of the ground wrapping around Shuichi. Yusuke leapt at Souta delivering an astonishing blow to the jaw that sent the young man flying into a tree. Loch manipulated the water in the air to throw Logan across the field and Hiei charging at Kagome blade drawn. He watched as Kagome fell backwards drawing the young man with her into the shadows.

Kagome drew Hiei into the darkness the perfect place to face the angry demon. She blocked and parried his attacks not feeling anything as time and again his blade cut her fragile flesh. Her lack of response infuriated Hiei, for some reason he wanted no needed her to have the fire she had only hours before.

“You're weak. A weak onna a ningen onna.” He spat out not in English or Japanese but in the language of the Makai, a series of growls and yips much like and animal talking.

“I AM NOT WEAK!” Kagome responded pulling them from the darkness. She flung her hand and the motion split the skin on his cheek. Her eyes lost all light as they became pitch black. In their depths there was nothing but death. “My name is Kagome. Not onna wench or bitch. KA-GO-ME!” Each sentence was punctuated by a motion of her hand causing new cuts to form, each one cutting deeper and farther than the last.

Hiei renewed his attack until she was forced to focus her energy on defending herself instead of attacking him. Behind them the battles waged on. Shuichi had Adair pinned against the brick building while Loch was trying to dodge Logan's attacks. Souta was using something that acted like flash bombs to confuse Yusuke and back flip out of the way.

Kagome could feel her emotions reaching the surface. She had been so numb before she was not sure she could handle the release. Her eyes blazed fury at Hiei as he attacked relentlessly drawing those emotions out of her. She could hear him in her mind taunting her heartlessly badgering her until she felt ready to explode. Instead she escaped to the darkness running from the demon that was making her feel again.

Hiei followed her scent tracking her to the following meadow. Here she waited in the shadows for her tormentor to leave.

Back in the field Souta grew tired of playing with Yusuke. Loch and Adair seemed bored as well. “We've played by his rules now end it.” His command was uttered softly but both his siblings heard it. In that split second their demeanors changed. Loch straightened no longer taunting Logan. The very air around him stilled as if sensing something coming. “Stop.” Logan stopped, though he tried to fight the command he could not move. “Sleep.” Logan collapsed and those closest could hear his snores as he immediately fell into a deep dreamless slumber. “Logan's out.” Loch lay on the grass and watched the sun overhead thinking about how nice it would be to take a nap.

Adair heard the soft command and frowned. She didn't want to hurt Kurama but sometimes it was unavoidable. Her fingers tunneled into the soft earth those watching in the house it seemed as if the earth opened and swallowed her up. She rose slowly behind the redhead and in a flash had a curved blade held against his throat. Those inside could not hear what she said to him.

“Do you yield Kurama?” She asked her question while lightly biting his neck. “If you are thinking about sending your whip back here think again pretty boy.” She caressed the rose whip and it wound around her arm like a lost lover. Then at her command it bound its master's hand behind his back. “It's done Souta.” Her energy began to drain as she fed it through the rose whip and into the redheaded avatar.

“Well Yusuke must say you are stronger than I first thought you would be. We must get away from these cameras so my family can show you what we can really do. And we are interested in what you and your detectives can really do.”

“Hurmph.”

Souta built his power up surrounding himself with the energy until he was luminescent. He then sent that energy towards Yusuke and the spirit detective was helpless to stop it. It smashed into him knocking him out in a heartbeat. “You can let him go now Adair.” He called out over his shoulder as he checked on Yusuke. Physically the spirit detective would be fine but that bolt of energy would amp up his own powers. Souta sighed moving the young man into the shade, he had down as Enma had asked increasing the detectives own powers. The blast of energy through Yusuke, the taming of the kitsune weapon for Kurama and all Kagome had to do was kiss the koorime.

Back in the meadow Kagome sat hidden in the shadows beneath a tall oak. Images swamped her mind. Shippo playing pranks, Miroku flirting, Inuyasha, Sango, and all the friends she had made 500 years in the past. Instead of the tears she expected she felt only a mild sorrow as if her heart knew something her mind didn't. But before she could contemplate that she noticed a glint of steel heading right for her. She tried to dodge it but wasn't fast enough. The thin steel pierced the fragile skin of her neck pinning her to the tree. She locked eyes on Hiei noticing that his eyes were not the blood red Naraku's were but instead a deep scarlet red.

Almost of its own violation her hand raised up before falling again to her side. Hiei drew close to pull his blade from the tree. This time there was no hesitation. Her hand came up and circled his neck drawing his lips flush against hers. At first the kiss was hesitant but Hiei quickly became the aggressor dominating her mouth. His tongue swept between her lips to taste her completely. Minutes passed as the kiss became carnal and would have led to more if Hiei had not pulled back unwilling to listen to his beast at the moment. Weakly her hand slid to gently cup his cheek. Her gray eyes moved to look above his own as her hand followed to gently trace his jagan. “Ah that's how you saw me a jagan I should have known.” With her energy spent she collapsed into his arms tearing her neck on his blade. Without the energy her blood kept flowing.

Cursing softly he held her one handed as his other cauterized her wound. Just as quickly he had her back in his arms and was moving swiftly towards the others.

“It was done as you ordered King Enma.”

“Do you wonder why he did not let you fight?”

“Why is that my lord?” Botan asked unusually calm in front of the spirit realm ruler.

“He feared for your life and your sanity.”

“My life?”

“If Yusuke and his teammates cannot learn to control the power they have been given it could very well kill them or at the very least drive them insane.”

Sorry this has been so long in the making. I've actually moved about 4 times in the past few months. Please review I'm not happy with this chapter or the previous ones but I'll work on making them better. Thanks for reading
