Chapter Nine
Kagome continued running, Kagura's words echoing through her head. 'Head north until dawn tomorrow. As soon as the sun begains to rise, head east. Continue that way until the sun is at your back. You will come across a mountain. There is a cave high up. It only allows people of pure heart to enter, so you should be safe from Naraku. Stay there for one day. Then head back to the Western Lands.'
It was already past noon. She had been runninng since dawn, when Kagura told her the instructions. She slowed down a bit, knowing that if she were to keep running at her top speed, she would get worn out, and that could not happen. She had to get away from Naraku.
Several more hours passed. She could see the sun was beginning to set, the air becoming colder. Her strange dress didn't give much warmth, but it was easy to run in. Kagome looked ahead. There was a forest. She could see smoke rising from the tree tops and groaned. *What oculd be going on here?* She wondered as she cautiously entered the forest. She heard voices and continued walking in their direction.
Then she saw two youkai and a youkai child. The older youkai were yelling at the child. Kagome watched to see what was happening and why, but knew she couldn't stay long.
"Brother! I will kill the kitsune child! I can make a new fur coat! Just like his father!" The bald youkai laughed, patting a robe around his waist.
"Fine. But do it quickly." The normal looking one said. As the bald youkai was about to kill the kitsune, Kagome pulled back an arrow and fired. It hit the unxpecting youkai in the back, purifying him and killing him instantly. The normal youkai turned a shocked gaze towards her. "Why did you kill my brother, wench?!" He yelled.
"He was about to kill the child! I can't let you kill him!" Kagome yelled, pulling back another arrow. The youkai growled and swung a staff around in the air. Lightening errupted from the sky and the youkai attacked. Kagome immediately dropped her bow and arrows and grabbed her naginata. She blocked his attack easyily, knocked him off balance, and then grabbed the front of his shirt with her hand. It began to glow, and soon the two glowed, and the youkai was purified.
Kagome ran over to the kitsune. He jumped up and hugged Kagome tightly. "Thank you lady! You saved me!"
"It's alright. I couldn't let them kill you like that. I have to go now. Do you have a home to return to?" Kagome asked. The little boy shook his head 'no'.
"I wanna come with you!"
"Why?" Kagome asked curiously.
"Because you saved me. I want to protect you now."
"You don't have to do that." Kagome smiled, patting the boy's head.
"But, I want to! I'll feel better about it." The kitsune boy argued.
"Alright then. You may come." Kagome said, picking up her naginata and bow. She slung the bow over her back and she and the kitsune walked away from the area. "What's your name?"
"I'm Shippo." He replied.
"Hi Shippo. My name is Kagome." The two smiled and Kagome picked up her pace and continued running.
Sesshomaru continued running at a fast pace. He still hadn't picked up any scent from Kagome or Naraku. He soon came upon a clearing. There were ashes everywhere, and he could sense powerful magic. Then, just barely, Kagome's scent. And a kitsune. The strongest scents were two other youkai, who were now turned to ashes.
From the way the area was and the scents, he could tell that the two youkai were trying to kill the kitsune youkai. Eventually Kagome had to step in and she purified the two youkai, taking the kitsune with her. Sesshomaru knew she wasn't in as much danger, not being alone now. The kitsune could help protect her, hopefully.
The scents were several hours old, and he knew he was gaining on her. He picked up the pace, knowing Naraku had to have come this way too. *If Naraku gets her....I'll kill him!*
Kagome had reached the mountain easily and found the cave. Kagura was right too. There was a barrier around the cave entrance. At first she feared for Shippo, not being able to get through, but he was able to. Kagome smiled. The two had talked and Kagome found out that the two youkai she killed were known as the Thunder Brothers. They had killed Shippo's parents several months ago, so now he was an orphan.
In the several hours that passed, Shippo got attached to Kagome and vise versa. They were now really close friends. Kagome hugged the small ball of fur to her for warmth. Shippo snuggled closer. He was so tired from trying to get away from the Thunder Brothers so he had just collasped. Now he was resting peacefully.
Kagome bit into an apple. She had picked several on thier way to the cave, knowing that Shippo would be hungry. She was too. There were three apples left, so she saved them for breakfast. Eventually she fell asleep, Shippo snuggled close to her.
Hours later, Kagome awoke with a start. There was something trying to get inside the cave. Kagome feared it was Naraku. She hoped he couldn't break the barrier. Then she saw silvery white. Very cautiously, she stepped closer. When she was standing right in front of the barrier, she could make out who it was.
Kagome smiled brightly. "Sesshomaru!!" Kagome stepped through the barrier and hugged him around the waist tightly. "You came!"
"Why wouldn't I?" He asked. His voice was slightly different. And so was his aura. Kagome stiffened. It wasn't Sesshomaru. Kagome backed away, fear in her eyes. "Why are you afraid, love?" Kagome panicked. *He's never called me that before!*
"You're not Sesshomaru!" She yelled.
"You're smarter than I thought." Suddenly his form began to change. From silver hair to black, golden eyes to dark violet red, white outfit to purple and black.
"Naraku!" Kagome yelled. She tried to run back into the cave, but Naraku had caught her by the wrist. His left hand went to her neck and began choking her. Kagome raised her hands up to try and pry his grip lose, but nothing happened. His physical strength was too strong for her.
"Kagome!!" Shippo jumped onto Naraku's arm and bit down hard. Naraku screamed in pain and released Kagome. She took off running down the side of the mountain and tripped over a rock. She gasped as she began falling downward. Kagome hit her head on a rock and was knocked out. Naraku then grabbed the kitsune off his arm, and flung him down next to Kagome's unconscious form.
