Chapter 3: The Prophecy
Sesshoumaru followed Kagome and Inuyasha as they walked hand in hand to the village. Shippo must have smelled them coming, because he came bounding out of the hut, followed by Sango and Miroku.
“I see you two made up” Miroku commented.
Kagome smiled, “Yep, you know I couldn't stay away for long.”
“So, what's he still doing here?” asked Shippo, gesturing toward Sesshoumaru.
“We're joining forces,” Inuyasha said proudly.
Three jaws dropped. “You…and Sesshoumaru?!” Miroku exclaimed.
“Yes, this baka has just realized that I have taken care of him since he was a pup” Sesshoumaru finally said.
“It's a long story…we can talk as we fly” Kagome interjected.
“Where are we going?” Sango asked, mouth still agape with surprise.
“To find Naraku, duh…we gotta pick up his kid and imp first, though” Inuyasha retorted.
“Hey, I really do need to get supplies, though, if we're leaving” Kagome said to Inuyasha.
“Alright, but, quickly…Sesshoumaru, you can hang out here…I'll make sure this doesn't take too long” said Inuyasha.
He pulled Kagome onto his back and bounded back into the forest, into the well. Kagome hugged her mother and quickly told her about Inuyasha's brother as she made a list for the store. Inuyasha stood in the doorway with his arms crossed and foot tapping. When she had finished, Kagome grabbed Inuyasha's hat, put it on his head and dragged him out of the shrine.
“I'm sorry I ran off like that, Inuyasha” she said apologetically as they walked.
“Keh! You should be!” Inuyasha snorted.
Kagome smirked, “Do you really love me, or did you just say that so I wouldn't leave with Sesshoumaru?”
“Keh! Of course I love you, you wouldn't have gone with him again anyway!”
“I knew all you needed was a little encouragement!”
“Keh! Whatever, you should've known!”
“I need to hear it from you” she said as she turned to face him.
They stared into each other's eyes for a moment before Inuyasha gathered her into his arms and kissed her passionately.
“This is all I wanted” Kagome smiled.
They continued into town hand in hand. They quickly picked up all the groceries and headed back to the shrine. Kagome packed her bag in record time. After a goodbye hug from her mother, Kagome crawled onto Inuyasha's back and he leapt through the well.
Sesshoumaru stood outside Kaede's hut, idly rubbing Aun's heads. Miroku, Sango and Shippo were ready when they arrived. Sesshoumaru offered Aun to Kagome and Inuyasha since he could already fly. Before Inuyasha could argue, Kagome graciously accepted. Shippo joined Kagome and Inuyasha on Aun, while Sango and Miroku mounted the transformed Kirara.
“I do not believe you have ever been properly introduced to Rin” said Sesshoumaru, more to Shippo than anyone else.
Rin's eyes widened, “Wow…are you a demon too?”
“Yes, I am Shippo the Kitsune, master of fox fire!” Shippo said proudly, bowing low.
Miroku, Sango and Kagome smothered a laugh. “Looks like they're hitting it off” Miroku said to the girls.
Just then, Jaken came scrambling out of the castle, “My Lord, you're back…what are they doing here, sire?”
“My little brother and I have joined forces against Naraku” Sesshoumaru said before glaring at his servant, who looked like he wanted to protest.
“Do you know anything about Naraku's whereabouts?” Miroku asked Sesshoumaru.
“I have heard rumors and have sensed an evil in the South” Sesshoumaru replied.
“What the hell are we waiting for then!” Inuyasha grumbled.
The newly formed company began walking south. Shippo and Rin chatted happily together, much to Sesshoumaru's benefit since she was usually chatting noisily to him. Kagome took Inuyasha's hand. He smiled down at her and she nuzzled against his shoulder. Miroku attempted to take Sango's hand, but she smacked it away. Sesshoumaru rolled his eyes. Jaken struggled with Aun, trying to make the lumbering dragon keep up with the others.
Everything seemed somewhat normal until they reached the first village. As they walked through the fields, the villagers bowed their heads low until the passed. Then whispers could be heard behind them.
“Why are the villagers acting so strangely?” Kagome asked anyone who was listening.
“Is it because of Sesshoumaru, perhaps?” Miroku asked, looking back to the tai-youkai.
“We are no longer in my territory, I know not why these humans bow” Sesshoumaru responded.
After some begging and eyelash batting, Kagome managed to convince Inuyasha to let them stay the night. The bowing continued as they entered the inn. Surprisingly, they were also offered rooms, free of charge. Miroku selflessly volunteered to go eavesdropping at the nearest establishment with sake and dancing girls. Sango gave him a murderous glare, grabbed his ear and agreed to accompany him to the teahouse on his mission. Shippo, Rin and Kirara took a room and Shippo proceeded to show Rin his trick toys. Sesshoumaru sent Jaken to watch over the children. Kagome, as expected, immediately ran off for a bath. Sango and Miroku returned just as Kagome finished her bath. They rendezvoused in the girls' room.
“The villagers were talking about some sort of prophecy” said Miroku.
“We heard something about the `Brothers of the Fang', but they must have recognized us because they stopped whispering” Sango continued.
Inuyasha slapped his neck, “Ow…Myoga!”
“Hello, Master Inuyasha…I see the rumors are true!” said Myoga as he popped back to his normal size and sat with his legs crossed on Inuyasha's palm.
“What rumors?” asked Inuyasha.
“That you and your brother have united” Myoga replied.
“Do you know anything about this prophecy…or the `Brothers of the Fang'?” asked Kagome.
“Certainly, the `Brothers of the Fang' are Inuyasha and Sesshoumaru…the fangs they are referring to are Tetsusaiga and Tenseiga” Myoga said, “the prophecy said that the `Brothers of the Fang' would unite and with the swords of their father's fang, they would dispel the growing evil and bring peace to all the lands.”
“So, that is why the villagers bow to us?” asked Sango.
“Yes, everyone believes that the sons of the Inu no Taishou are their saviors…there is more to the prophecy, I believe, but I do not know it” Myoga replied, “Lord Sesshoumaru, it's been a long time!”
“Do not even think about it, flea” Sesshoumaru said as he flicked Myoga, who had hopped onto his shoulder and was inching closer to his neck.
“Well, let's just enjoy this while we can!” Miroku smiled as they're dinner was brought in to them by lovely young girls.
Sango caught him eyeing them instead of his food and quickly whacked him on top of the head with Hiraikotsu.
“Humans are strange creatures” Sesshoumaru mumbled under his breath.
The children came running in at the smell of the food, followed by Jaken, who seemed to be out of breath from his babysitting duties. After dinner, Rin squealed with delight as Shippo changed into different animals. Sesshoumaru smiled very slightly, he did not see Kagome catch him.
Tai-youkai - I think it is safe to assume that Sesshoumaru, as the eldest son, would become the Inu no Taishou after his father's death…this is a shorthand I have seen used elsewhere.
Inu no Taishou - translated as “Dog General”, Inuyasha and Sesshoumaru's father's name is never given, he is simply referred to as thus.
