Chapter Twenty- Listening

For the past week Kagome had been working. She cleaned and tidied and did it all silently without complaint. She actually enjoyed having something to take her mind off Naraku and Inuyasha left her alone.

That was both good and bad, she felt safe around him, she knew he would protect her because Midoriko told him to and she knew evne under that tough exterior he was nice. But she was also worried that somehow she would slip up and in her hope to help him find out all he wanted to know she would talk and all would be lost.

Only Koga came around and when he did Mrs. Bucket would tell her to go to the forest to get water or anywhere away from Koga. She realised they didn't want her near him and she was glad they did it for she did not like being around him either.

This was one of those occations. Koga had been sniffing around the servants quarters and Mrs. Bucket told her to go down to the garden and pick some herbs. It was a simple task one that Kagome was good at and she was soon busy picking the herbs Mrs. Bucket told her to get.

Picking the herbs reminded her of home. She used to love spending time taking care of her garden and had to blink to keep fresh tears from falling. Her garden was gone too, taken away from her just like her family. She hated Naraku for taking it all away. She was still afraid of him but now with Inuyasha she felt a little braver.

"Were you hiding for me?" Asked a cocky voice.

Kagome turned and came face to face with Koga watching her with a smile. Kagome had to clentch her teeth to stop herself from growling. First it was Naraku then it was Koga!

She stood and turned away from him, collecting the herbs and walking towards the castle.

"What's your hurry?" He stood in front of her, a cruel smile on his face "Don't you want to get to know me?" He laughed and Kagome stepped back.

"leave her alone!" Said a comanding voice.

Inuyasha stood behind Koga his amber eyes ablaze with rage. Why was he here? Why did he have to follow her? When Inuyasha had smelt that stinking wolf he had followed just to find him with Jen. He had instantly been linded by jealousy and hate.

"Oh, Dog breath what do you want" Koga framed innocence "Me and what is her name? Jenny were just having a nice... chat"

"Yeah, yeah," Inuyasha stepped forward and stood between them and reached for the Tetsaiga, "just leave now"

"Okay" Growled Koga then ignoring Inuyasha he spoke directly to Jenny "I'll come back to finish our 'chat'"

Then he glared once at Inuyasha and turned around showing his back and long ponytail. When he was gone Inuyasha turned on her and grabbed her arm. She was not even safe in the servants quarters. That bastard Koga chased her like a bloodhound!

Inuyasha realised he was dragging her and she struggled to have him release her arm. Inuyasha climbed a staircase to the second level of the castle he turned a corner and stopped before on of the doors in the corridor.

He gently pushed the door opened and dragged her inside. He did not let go of her hand though. He had to breath slowly and did not look her in the eye.

She was afraid and continued to struggle. He knew she did not like to be touched or forced to do anything but he needed her to be closer to be safe.

"You will not be working anymore" He said in a whisper to hide his anger "This will be your room and you will stay here unless I say so"

Then she glared at him her eyes filled with anger and hate. It hurt to see her like this all flushed with anger.

Then he heard it, he didn't know where it had come from or whether it was real or not, but the words were clear in his mind. Her lips did not move but he heard as if she spoke telepathically 'Let me go you bastard'

He let her go instantly, stunned. She leapt away from him and watched him fearfully.

He retreated from the room.

Kagome spent the rest of th afternoon tying to work out what had happened. He had heard her thoughts, like when she talked with Kilala.

Midoriko's words came back to her "She does speak, if you listen". He had been staring at her when he heard, maybe that was how it happened. she shook her head thinking how cruel her words had been. She had been thinking of Naraku and it just happened. She regreted it now.

The room was bare, with only a wardrobe and a nice bed. Kagome lay on it just to enjoy the feeling of a matress. She had not been in a proper bed for ages. Living in the forest she only had the cold floor and her clothes taht became tattered like rags. In the servants chambers she had pretty much the same thing, a thin pillow and a spot on the floor. But she didn't complain.

What a jerk Inuyasha was! Locking her up in this room. She had tried the door a few times and clentched her teeth when it wouldn't open. If this was his idea of protecting her she would rather defend herself.

Inuyasha was pleased with himself. He was sure Koga would leave her alone now because her room was only a few doors away from his own. Now he could work on getting her to talk to him.

He remembered again the voice he heard in his head and the Ghost womans words. Was this what she meant by listening without using his ears? Maybe he could get her to talk like that. Somehow he wondered if he could get it to work again.

"Shippo" He said to the little fox boy "go and keep Jenny company, but don't let her out of that room"

The kid did it happily for he liked the new girl. She had become a good friend of his.

"Hi Jenny" Said the cheery fox demon as he lept up on the bed. She looked at him for a moment and then at the door hoping he would understand.

"Oh no," he laughed "Inuyasha said i was not allowed to let you out of this room"

She glared at him and then turned away. It was silent for a moment.

"This used to be Sango's room" He said suddenly "She was never bothered with decoration"

Kagome looked up at the child. He looked sad was he friends with Sango as well?

"She was like a mother to me" he said staring at the walls "Miroku loves her, that's why he went looking for her. If you knew something you'd try to tell us right? I know your mute but you would try?"

Kagome stared at him for a while feeling guilty. She did know something, Sango was dead, she would not be comming back. But she could not tell them yet for if she did they would expect her to try to tell them everything, that knowledge might be her only protection.

Thant brought her back to the problem of Inuyasha. If he could hear her thoughts what would stop him from demanding her to tell him through thoughts? Then she would be of no use to him and he would toss her out. Somehow that was the worst thing that could happen, if he just tossed her awy like an old peice of fruit.

Maybe she could control what he heard like with Kilala and Midoriko, she couldn't hear all their thoughts! Maybe she could just relax for a while and enjoy being in the company of others. Maybe Midoriko would think of a way to destroy Naraku. Maybe she could find more than safety here.


a/n: koga is supposed to be the equivilant of Richard in the book.
