Chapter Twentytwo- The story of Midoriko
Kagome was bored. It was worse than just being bored, she wanted so badly to get out of this place and go to that forest. It called to her and not being able to leave was driving her insane. Inuyasha had said she was never allowed to leave this room but why did she have to listen to him?
It was like living with her father all over again. He used to forbid her from going to the forest as well but she never listened to him either.
Making up her mind she started trying her sheets together to make a long ladder, she couldn't help feeling sad as she did this. All the memories of home it brought up, she once again realised how far away from home she really was and how much she had lost.
She looked out the window making sure no one was around. She carefully began to climb down and slipped at the end. She crashed into the bush beneath and had to bite back a scream of panic. After years of being silent it seemed so easy.
Then after once again checking that no one had heard and stiffling a laugh of triumph she ran briskly towards the forest, already feeling the joy of being free.
Only she didn't realise that someone had seen her. Someone who watched with a wicked gleam in his eyes. Koga stepped out from behind the shadows, a smile on his face. The beautiful maiden was all alone, Inuyasha nowhere nearby. No one knew she would be going to the forest, no one would be able to save her.
The wolf youkai followed the unsuspecting Jenny contemplating what he would do when he had the girl all alone.
***
Inuyasha was filled with both joy and worry. It had been three years since he had any news of her. Sango had been spotted. Inuyasha wanted to go running to her as much a Miroku did but there was a slight problem.
Jenny could not be left alone. Even if he kept her locked in her room with Shippo and Sesshomaru watching her there was only so little they could do. She was not of noble blood, she was a half wild girl and Koga could do whatever he wanted with her for he was stronger and had no problem with forcing young girls.
And what would Jenny do if he did, she could not talk. So now he could either leave her here in danger, or take her with him but she would still be in great danger. The last time she was there she had been terribly frightened. He would have to go to plan b but would she even except?
She might get angry with him and even cry but he would tell her he had no choice he would make her see how it would protect her. Then after he returned with sango he would try and make her stay.
Inuyasha sighed knowing he should not have locked her up and it would not be good to force her into this situation, she deserved better treatment and better protection. Inuyasha was just to protective!
He decided he would talk to her. The past week the 'talking' between the two was getting stronger but she still kept secrets from him. He spent as much time as he could spare, for he had lots of meeting with Sesshomaru and other things to take care of, to try and gain her trust and so she would tell him about the pain in her soul.
Only he didn't know that when he got there she would be missing.
***
Kagome felt at home in the forest, although it was not the same as hers it was close enough and she could feel it calling to her in much the same way. With her heart and mind she called to the spirit of this forest hoping to hear the familiar voices of Midoriko and Kilala.
It never came and she felt disappointed. She had expected it though, Midoriko was now confined to her own forest if she left she would no longer be protected by it and Naaraku would have her too. Kagome still wondered about Midoriko, about her soul and why Kilala was always there.
But at this moment she only wanted to be in the forest and to relax for a while, something she hadn't done for years. She lay in the roots of the tree and began to close her eyes when she heard a twig snap.
If she had not been so used to fear, so used to listening for any sound of naraku she would have dismissed the noise but instead her head shot up and she came face to face with Koga. For a second she had thought it was Naraku and almost screamed.
"Hello my sweet" He said casually "What is a beautiful girl like you doing in this wood? Isn't Inuyasha keeping you under lock and key anymore? Or did you escape"
Kagome/Jenny stood up and began to walk home. She had a bad feeling about Koga about the glint in his blue eyes. The forest no longer called to her and suddenly the shadows seemed sinister and cold, she wished she could see the sun and the sky, she needed to be in wide open spaces, not here trapped with Koga.
Then he was standing there, in front of her, blocking her escape like before. She tried to pass him but he grabbed her arm and pulled her closer so he could whisper in her ear "No one knows you are out here do they? We can have some fun"
The words burrowed deep into her heart and she was instanly overwhelmed with fear and anger. She tried to jerk free of his grip, to hit him across the face but he was stronger and did not care about what she wanted. He pulled her against his chest and locked his arms around her, his embrace was nothing like Inuyasha's, it was not gentle, not caring. His was only full of lust and disregard for her feelings.
As he pressed his lips against hers, she closed her eyes and fought the instinct to scream. She would be silent, she would be like the wind, the trees like the forest. She would not think about Koga or what he wanted to do with her, she would not think about Naraku and how he tried to do the same. She would think of something good, she thought of Inuyasha.
She tried to pretend that it was him who was forcing his tongue into her mouth, his clawed hands that were roaming her back but it was not working. She tried hard to stop the tears from falling when Koga pushed her against a tree. Inuyasha's image kept comming to her mind and she couldn't help but cry.
After this he would hate her, how could he want someone who was so violated. She had betrayed him and after this she was as good as dead. The worst thing would be to see his disgusted face.
Koga began to shift her dress and become more and more animal like. She remembered once again of Naraku on top of her, trying to force her, she remembered her fear and her hatred. She remembered how once she had imagined it had been Inuyasha but in the end it was not Inuyasha, the demon whom tried to protect her, it was Koga.
Anger swelled in her heart and without opening her mouth or saying a word she cried out 'Inuyasha help me!'
***
Inuyasha growled in fury as he followed her scent into the forest. He could also smell that scum Koga. When Inuyasha had found her room empty he had been frantic, he feared she had run away from him but it was worse, she was with Koga. Alone and unprotected in the woods there was so much Koga could get away with and Jenny would not be able to tell him, knowing her pride and fear.
he had to find her, or else he would loose all of his chances. She would hate him for not protecting her, she would never come back to him and he would never be able to tell her how much he loved her.
When he found Koga on top of her and smelt her fear and tears Inuyasha went into a blind rage. the demon blood in his veins began to boil and his vision blurred a little. He kept control of his demon powers though, for there was no telling what he would do to Jenny after he killed Koga. And he would kill him, and then rip his body to shreds for what he was trying to do.
When Koga heard his growl he jumped away from her and laughed "Inuyasha? How nice to see you" He was once again framing innocence and that made Inuyasha even madder.
Jenny watched in shock and horror as she scrambled behind Inuyasha. In a quet threatening voice he warned Koga "Get out of here"
Koga's face went grave, he looked at Inuyasha and then at the girl cowering behind him. Inuyasha stepped forward blocking his view of her. His claws were clentched into fists and his eyes were turning red, Koga was not stupid, he knew when it was not a good idea to fight.
"Do not come back," Inuyasha growled, "or i will kill you"
"Why don't you do it now, so we can settle this once and for all?" Koga asked bravely, he was riskingit by asking but he knew Inuyasha was restaining himself and he was intrigued.
"I do not want Jenny to see me slice you to peices" Inuyasha did not make a move and watched as Koga turned his back. He started to head in the direstion of home.
"I'll be back someday Inuyasha" Then in a tornado of wind the wolf demon was gone.
Kagome was both estatic with relief and as frightened as a mouse. She made no sound or movement as she waited for Inuyasha to be furious with her. She wanted to feel his protection and safety one last time before he told her to leave or killed her for being so stupid.
Inuyasha felt instantly guilty, it had been all his fault. He kneeled down and tried to get her to look at him with a clawed hand beneath her chin. She would not look him in the eye "Are you hurt?" 'Did he touch you there?' Inuyasha thought to himself.
She did not hear his secret though but shook her head. She had been lucky that Inuyasha had gotten there in time.
"I'm so sorry" He said to her surprise.
Then because he was so filled with relief and fear he pulled her into his warm embrace. At first she was shocked and stiffened and he began to fear that she did indeed hate him but then her arms shyly, tentativly wrapped around him and she began to cry. He held her for a while as she cried silently, the sun would be going down shortly.
He pulled her away and gently whiped the tears from her eyes. It was now or never he would have to tell her but how? First he had to get her mind off Koga and then he would ask and hope for the best.
"Why did you come to the forest?" He asked calmly.
'Because I didn't like being cooped up!' she replied angrily and he was glad she had not become a scared shell of a girl.
"The forest has always been your protection, hasn't it?" He asked already knowing it was true "The spirit of the forest she protect you too?"
Jenny nodded.
"Do you know the story of the spirit? They say that once she was a princess that had been forced to marry a demon she didn't like."
Jenny eyes widdened with wonder and he smiled, thankful that she could forget the aweful experience, Jenny/Kagome was bewildered that Inuyasha would know the story of Midoriko and longed for him to continue.
"She became depressed and even suicidal and then one day before she finally killed herself a cat youkai came and stopped her. The demon promised that if she listened she would be saved. The Miko/princess agreed and began to follow the demon. She had been so close to freedom but at the last minute she had been tricked and the evil demon took her a peice of her soul with a kiss. She had only been spared losing her whole soul by the cat youkai"
Inuyasha paused to look at Jenny she seemed lost in her own world and fascinated by the story.
"They say she is still cursed this very day. To live within the forest and await the day her soul is rejoined with its 'sisters'"
Jenny/Kagome froze, didn't Kanna mention being rejoined with her sisters?
"I think it was her spirit that told me to protect you, in the cave that night" Inuyasha seemed so sure. "You're probably wondering why i told you all this"
Kagome was, he was leading to something and she felt wary.
"I promised to protect you, and i am determined to keep that promise. There is something going on with you and that spirit, are you trying to help her?"
He did not wait for an answer though Kagome wanted to tell him everything about her ordeal with Naraku and her family. Sher kept quiet.
"There has been reports about Sango" He said his voice with and edge of regret.
'What?' Kagome thought to herself . She remembered the battered woman that she had healed and then left to fend for herself. She must be dead, how could she survive on her own in the forest. Unless Midoriko helped her.
"I have to go to her, to make sure it's her." He looked away "I cannot take you with me, and i fear Koga will return while i'm gone unless...."
Kagome thought this was it, he was going to send her back to her forest or do something worse.
He took her hand and held it firmly amber eyes intent on her face "You must promise to listen to me, then you can either agree or disagree"
This was it, Inuyasha wondered if it would work, could she ever agree to something so far fetched?
a/n: my attempt at a cliff hanger. What is he going to ask? And will she agree. Now you know that Kilala is Midoriko's guardian and savor... Wouldn't i be mean if i stopped updating now?
