Chapter twentythree- For life
Kagome was worried, what could Inuyasha want to ask? What would he want her to agree or disagree about. she didn't like it and she could feel the anger bubbling up at his games.
"As some mute wild girl you aren't very much respected or protected. If i am gone anything could happen and Sesshomaru or myself could do nothing about it... But if you were..." He paused and turned away from her, he did not want to see the rejection in her eyes when he asked "If you were to be my... My Mate then-'
Kagome jumped back and her eyes went wide. He was asking her to marry him? She wasn't sure whether she was happy or angry. Only shocked.
"Don't worry," He whispered "It will only be in name, for your... your protection"
'What?' She sent angrily 'You can't!"
"It's okay Jenny," he tried to calm her "Please just agree so i wont have to worry about you"
How much worse could Kagome's day get. First she was almost raped by that wolf demon Koga and now she was being proposed to be another demon who didn't love her. He didn't love her, so why was he asking her to marry him. It was the spell, the one Midoriko had put on him, it made him do crazy things to protect her. She felt guitly about that and secretly thought 'When i am gone you will be free of this spell'
"Please think about it!" He pleaded.
She sat down an arm's length away from him and thought about it. It wasn't going to be a real marriage, he didn't really love her... She realised she wished it was real, she wished he did love her she wished it was not some spell.
Cursing Midoriko for doing this to her, for making him protect her. If he had never found her, her heart would not be hurting so much and she would not think about him all the time.
Inuyasha desperatly hoped she would agree, he wanted her to be with him so much he almost feared his heart would leap out from his chest. He would not tell her that demons mate for life and that he really wanted this to be a real marraige. He would wait till after, when it was all over and she regained her voice so they could properly talk to make her his mate/wife forever.
She looked at him, right into his eyes. She seemed just as wild and beautiful as ever and when he heard without her lips moving her answer his heart skipped a beat.
'Yes' She thought.
He smiled a toothy grin and then hugged her once more. She could feel his breath at the base of her neck and for a moment went limp with fear. Was this the right decision? Was she making a mistake?
She clentched her teeth when she felt his teeth at the base of her neck. She kept quiet as he made the mark that would tell all the world that she was his. It was not real she thought, it is only a spell. I cannot give my heart to someone who does not truly love me.
He licked the wound he make and felt her shiver in response. He felt his need for her grow just as his determination did She would be his one day. Until then he would only long to feel her trembling beneath him, to hear her laughter her voice...

Inuyasha and Miroku left that night.
The household had been filled with whispers and rumours and there were many sideways glances to Kagome/Jenny who was no longer locked up in her room. They all knew the moment she entered the castle walls that she was mated to Inuyasha.
Sesshomaru seemed neither angry or pleased. He said nothing except that she will be given the respect any princess deserved. She wished she had a voice to say 'I'm already a princess!' She felt angry and confused.
Why did her heart hurt so much? She was worried about Inuyasha and that night as she slept in Inuyasha's room, he had already left, in his large bed with his smell all around her she had nightmares that Naraku would kill him or he would never return and disapear with Sango. She prayed silently to anyone who would listen to make sure he returned because she didn't know if she could live without him.

Midoriko sat beneath her tree, the little youkai that was her guardian sat beside her. It seemed strange that such a little creature could protect Midoriko so well. If it had not been for Kilala she would have been found the moment she tried to hide in this forest.
"What will happen next?" She asked the Kilala quietly.
The two big red eyes glittered with knowledge 'It is almost over' was all she replied. Midoriko did not know whether that was a good or bad thing.
Kilala got up and began to walk away from Midoriko. "Where are you going" Midoriko began to worry. She had spent so many years with Kilala she could hardly remember a time when she did not have Kilala at her side.
The little cat youkai turned slowly and regarded her with solemn red eyes. She seemed to be such a young creature, with a small cute body and a little mew. But in that moment all the years and tiredness was reflected in her eyes and she seemed like a frail old youkai who wished only for rest.
'I have one last thing to try, I doubt it will work... But i must try' It was time to fight, to try and protect her Miko's. She walked as if carrying a large burden though there was no fear in her heart. The Youkai was not afraid of death only that she would fail and everything she tried so hard to save would be lost. 'Goodbye my friend'
The cat was gone and for the first time Midoriko was truly alone. Where the cat was going she did not know though she was sure she wasn't comming back. The magic that guarded the forest did not change though and Midoriko thought again of what Kilala had said.
Soon the battle would begin, the battle for Midoriko's soul and so many lives.

Koga slipped through the shadows without a sound. First he tried the room she was supposed to be in, then using his great sense of smell he found her curled up in dog breath's bed.
It had been a week after the attack in the woods he had left enough time for things to die down for his secret return.
Inuyasha's smell was all over this room and on the girl and Koga growled inwardly. His spies said that Inuyasha himself had left the same day of the attack and that the girl was now his mate. He saw with is own eyes that was true by the mark on her neck. Koga was not the kind of demon who took losing to some stinking dog lying down.
He had made his own plans for her.
In the middle of the night a shadow slipped from the castle, in his arms was a sleeping girl. He gently carried her off through the forest to the castle of the wolves. He would wait for Inuyasha to come after him.
