(Disclaimer: I do not own Inuyasha)

“Virgil….who is that?” Heiwa looked at his father for a fleeting moment before looking down the broken path they were to follow. “He is the pagan philosopher who guided another soul such as yourself down this path.” “Then why did she call you that?” The boy grew silent again, his silver ears swiveling in the direction of a new sound. “Duck.” Inuyasha grabbed his son and dropped to the ground. A large pair of pawed feet stood at his face.

“Todamei, is he the one you spoke of?” The wolf nodded. Rising, Inuyasha stood in front of the lion that now blocked his and his son's path. “I see. You are of a pure heart….tainted by your demon blood.” A snarl rose from the inu's throat. “Father claim yourself. He cannot see you. This lion is blind of all things yet he can feel your soul.”

“The child speaks no lies. I feel and see only your soul.” The lion seemed to contemplate Inuyasha's stance, the way he moved. His voice, his aura. The very being that was Inuyasha. One blood matted paw turned up to press itself in the middle of the hanyou's broad chest. “Well?” Todamei's impatient voice chirped. “I see nothing more than a will to bring back one that has been lost.”

“So we are letting him pass?” “Aye, it is up to Paseria to tell where he will go now.” Todamei erupted in anger at this. She stood pacing in front of the large beast. “Ho! What more will you say once the prince of all that is damned sees this! Bas, you are growing soft!” Inuyasha and his son watched as the two beasts quarreled; the arrival of the last beast gone untended to.

“Both of you, is that not why we guard hell's gate? Because of the crazed bickering we ensued in life?” This voice that spilled forth from the last beast's mouth was as soothing as a mother's touch. “Paseria.” Both of the other animals fell to the ground, heads bowed. “You offer too much loyalty to me.” Her gaze turned on Inuyasha. The panther stalked towards him. “You have passed the other two beasts and have come to me for admittance to hell. Pray tell, why is it so important of you to retrieve this girl…this Kagome? Tell me this and I shall let you pass. If your reason is uncouth I will lead you to the entrance and let whatever lie there devour your child.”

A gentle tugging on his Haori brought Inuyasha out of his trance. He picked Heiwa into his arms. “I wish to take home my mate. To return to her, her life as it was before my intrusion.” “To rid her of you?” “No, to fix what I broke…” “Her heart.” “Aye.”

“A pure unselfish wish…do you love her?” Inuyasha looked into her eyes intensely. “With all of my being.” Paseria turned her back to him. “I will lead you to the gates. What happens to you there will be in the hands of Virgil.” Inuyasha took a glance at his sleeping son. “He is not Virgil.” As if to read his mind the panther answered.
“But why...” “She called him that because Virgil's soul resides inside of him…Once inside they will split and it will be up to you to take care of your son.”

The smell of brimstone and ash suddenly overcame Inuyasha's senses. “My god…” “No, God has no dealings down here. He resides above us leaving us to burn down inside of hell's tomb.” Inuyasha covered his son's nose, fear of the boy choking was his only reason. That and he felt obligated.

Paseria looked back as they reached a set of crooked gates made from writhing souls screaming for death. “Here is where I leave you. You must open the gate…pay no heed to the souls. They are in eternal pain for a reason.”

Nodding Inuyasha watched her evaporate as he was left to pull open the gates of hell on his own. “Kagome wait for me.”
