The night wore on and their search was still in vain. Kagome saw something pink off to the side near the ravine. Her eyes widened and she yelled.

"Mayu!" The woman raced over to her but froze when she saw the limb body. "Mayu?" she whispered as she stepped closer.

It was indeed the little girl but her body was strewn precariously and two puncture marks glared up at Kagome on Mayu's exposed leg.

"Oh god, no, Inu Yasha!" she screamed and dropped beside Mayu.

The black lab ran up to Kagome and began to bark letting his owner know that he had found them.

"Flash!" Inu Yasha yelled as he pushed through the woods towards the sound of the barking. Then he heard it; he heard the dog start yowling.

"Oh no!" Inu Yasha scrambled towards the sound and he knew that if the dog was howling that something bad had happened.

Kagome shrugged her jacket off and wrapped Mayu in it protectively. She stood on shaky legs and looked down at Flash tears falling from her eyes, mixing with the rain water.

"She'll be ok, right Flash?" she sobbed hysterically, waiting for Inu Yasha.

The dog threw back his head and let out a yowl as his owner pushed through the forest to where they were. "What's wrong?!" He asked as he rushed over to Kagome.

She looked up at him. "She's been bitten by a snake!" Her ebony hair was plastered against her face and her eyes were red from crying.

Inu Yasha looked down at the little girl's leg as he pulled out a bandana from his pocket. "Ok, ok, I know what to do for this," He mumbled as he reached over and tied it around Mayu's leg. "Ok that will keep the poison from spreading."

The boy looked pale and frantic as he searched for a quick way out of the mess they were in.

Kagome cradled Mayu's head precariously and sobbed into her hair. "I'm so sorry baby, I'm sorry, don't do this, you're scaring Mommy!"

Inu Yasha stood there, thinking as the rain poured down, soaking his hair to his bare back.

"Ok, ok, we have to get out of here quick." He bent down and grabbed Flash's leash and then grabbed a hold of Kagome's arm. "Ok boy, find home."

The dog barked and took off, being the eyes for the trio, since it had gotten dark in the search for the girl. Kagome ran close behind Inu Yasha cradling the girl to her chest and leaping over fallen branches and other such underbrush. They reached the edge of the forest in record time. When they all rushed towards the house, Flash barked at an unfamiliar car parked in the drive way.

The soaked girl ran over to her car, yanking the door open. Her heart was racing as she laid Mayu in the backseat, tucking her in so she wouldn't roll away.

Inu Yasha stood there, holding the leash to his dog as he watched Kagome get into the car.

She looked over at Inu Yasha. "Are you coming?" she asked, looking up at him.

"I can't go, I have to stay with the boys," he said as he stood glued to the spot in which he was standing. "Just hurry and get her to the hospital, I will get someone to bring me there."

Kagome jabbed her finger at the car. "Sango's here, she can watch them." Her eyes were pleading and desperate. "Please, Inu Yasha. I need you!"

Inu Yasha led the dog to the gate and let him lose in the yard. He quickly locked the gate and rushed to the car and hopped in.

Kagome jumped down and flicked the car on, peeling out of the driveway in a matter of seconds. She was tearing up the highway and making her way into town, checking the girl in the mirror constantly.

Inu Yasha sat in the car and watched the little girl like a hawk and made sure that the tourniquet that he put on wasn't cutting off the circulation of blood to her leg.

Kagome slammed on the breaks in the parking lot moments later and reached back to steady Mayu, then clambered out of the car. Inu Yasha shot out of the car and followed Kagome into the ER doors. She shifted her grip on the girl and tied to hurry the woman through the information she needed, before some nurses came out and tried to pry Mayu from Kagome's grasp.

"No! Wait!" she cried, trying to hang onto her daughter.

Inu Yasha grabbed Kagome's shoulders and pulled her towards him. "Let her take the girl, Kagome."

Kagome fell against Inu Yasha's chest and hid her face in his shirt. "Oh god," she sobbed. "Please say she's going to be ok, Inu Yasha."

"She will be ok," he said as he rubbed her back.

Kagome bit her thumb and tried to bite back a wail. "Inu Yasha! Please god..."

Inu Yasha stood there feeling numb all over as he watched them take Mayu away. "She will be ok, Kagome."

The girl trembled in her arms shaking with silent sobs. "Please be right."

He rubbed her back trying to get Kagome to calm down. "You know me, Kags, I'm always right," he said with a slight smirk.

She tightened her fists in his shirt and wept bitter tears. "I'm so sorry!"

"Shhh, its ok," he said quietly.

Kagome slid down his body to her knees and dropped her head against his legs crying.

Inu Yasha knelt down to Kagome and gave her a hug. "Shhh, it's ok, I swear. I know it looked bad, but it could have been way worse."

She sniffed and nodded, pulling back to look up at him with red eyes. "She's going to be fine and she's going to playing with Souta and shippou right?"

He nodded and pulled her to her feet "Yep, they deal with snake bites all the time here. People are always getting bitten; especially in the summer."

Kagome forced a smile and stood up. "Yea and, and then I can...--" she choked off a sob again and fell against him.

Inu Yasha raised a brow. "You can what?"

She shook her head, crying. "I can't even take her and the boys to the park anymore."

He sighed. "So they don't need to go there anyway. They have plenty of room to play at home."

She pulled back and wiped her nose. "But she won't be there anymore."

Inu Yasha scowled. "I said she is going to be fine, Kagome."

Kagome's red eyes wear bloodshot from her tears. "But we won't live there anymore."

"Well you're the one who wanted to quit," he said.

She looked up at him and then turned her gaze to the floor. "I didn't want you to have to worry about making a decision anymore."

"Well, you made it, so you should be happy, ne?" he said as he turned and walked over to the waiting area and sat down.

A nurse came out and walked over to Kagome. Their voices didn't reach Inu Yasha's ears but Kagome's face fell more and more as the woman continued to talk with a solemn look on her face.

Inu Yasha looked over his shoulder when he didn't see Kagome for a few minutes. His eyes darkened when he saw her talking to a nurse and got up. "What's wrong with Mayu?" his voice boomed out as he walked towards them.

The nurse started, and then looked up at Kagome, questioningly. The shaky pallid girl nodded and the nurse turned to Inu Yasha. "The poison has spread through her body; it's been a while since the bite."

"Then give her the god damn anti-venom!" Inu Yasha snapped and looked at the nurse.

The nurse stared up at him. "We can't until we are sure of what snake it was. And since you didn't see what kind it was, there's no sure way of telling. Even if we got the right venom, her body is too young and frail that the toxicity of the poison could have already damaged her body too much to a point where we can't save her."

Inu Yasha growled as he got up into her face. "Baka!" He snorted and folded his arms across his chest. "It lies between one of two types of poisonous snakes that we have around here .It was either a copper head or a rattler."

The girl got an irritated look on her face. "Right, but the thing is we don't know which it was, and the mix of the two antidotes could damage the girl worse than that snakebite!"

Inu Yasha's eyes lit on fire as he glared at her. "Fucking idiot, I'm going to call my grandfather and get him to come here and cure her; since you don't know what the fuck your doing!"

The woman looked like she was about to blow up at him but her pager went off and she got a panicked look on her face, and rushed off towards Mayu's room.

Inu Yasha went pale and rushed to the closest pay phone and dialed a number. He switched weight from one foot to another nervously as he heard a familiar voice on the phone.

"Hello?"

Inu Yasha sighed in relief. "Grandpa, I need you over at the hospital, and I need you like now."

The older man became worried "What's wrong Inu Yasha?" he asked.

The boy felt like bawling right there. "A little girl has been bitten by a snake and it was my fault and she is very ill now."

His grandfather said, "Alright, Inu, I will be right there just let me gather my things."

Inu Yasha nodded. "Alright, I will be waiting," he said as he hung up the phone.

Kagome stared up at him; her eyes dull as if her entire world had just fallen around her. Her mouth opened, and then closed again, as if what she wanted to say wouldn't come out. Tears started pooling in her eyes, coating the dusty gray orbs in a glistening sheen.

Inu Yasha walked back over to Kagome "Its ok, my grandpa is on his way; he will know what to do."

The girl just continued to stare at him, without seeing him, hearing him or sensing him, her shaking body trembling worse and worse.

Inu Yasha reached out and touched her arm. "Hey, it's going to be ok."

Tears finally started cascading over the lids of her eyes and her trembling lips let a choked sob past. Kagome stared in the same direction as her shoulders shook so hard that it rattled her teeth.

"Kagome, no more tears, it's not helping," he said as he shook her gently.

"She going to die," she whispered hoarsely, her voice swallowing her words down as another choked sob came up.

The boy scowled and shook her harder. "Stop that, right now, damn it!" he snapped. "She will not!"

Kagome let a whimper pass her lips and she shut her eyes, bringing her arms up to her chest to ward him off. "That's what the woman said! She knows! She said so!"

Just then, the doors opened and a tall man with dark skin and long gray hair walked into the door. Inu Yasha turned his eyes to the man and waved him down. "Grandpa, over here!"

The girl looked up to where Inu Yasha was gesturing with her haunted eyes, and seemed to look right through the man. The older man walked to his grandson and gave him a hug. "O-si-yo, Inu. To-hi-tsu?"

Inu Yasha hugged his Grandfather back. "Not good, Grandpa, not good at all."

The nurse rushed out of the room and down to Kagome and whispered something to her. The girl let out a strangled cry and let her terrified gaze snap up to Inu Yasha.

Inu Yasha and his grandfather rushed into the room where Mayu was. The older gentleman placed a bag on the table and started pulling out things as he glanced over the small girl. "Rattle snake," he said as he looked over to this grandson.

Inu Yasha nodded. "I tried to tell them that, but they wouldn't listen."

The old man laughed. "They have forgotten the old ways, Inu, you have to over look them."

Kagome rushed in behind Inu Yasha peering over his shoulder, ignoring the nurse behind her.

Inu Yasha's grandfather pulled out a jar of poultice and a bottle of medicine. He approached the small girl and rubbed the salve over the bite mark on her leg.

"This will help draw out the poison;" he said as he cleaned off his hands. Then he turned to open the bottle of medicine. "This is an old family secret that we have used for generations." He opened the small girl's mouth and placed a few drops of it into her mouth.

The girl looked up at Inu Yasha trustingly and gripped his hand tightly, her brows furrowing.

The old man smiled as he sat the medicine down on the table next to the girl and touched the small one's cheek. "Alright now, little doe, I think its time to open your eyes," he said. Inu Yasha nervously squeezed Kagome's hand as he watched.

The little girl moaned slightly and her small brow furrowed before painfully opening her eyes. "Daddy?" she asked hoarsely as she looked up at Inu Yasha and Kagome blurrily. "Mommy?"

Raven claw smiled. "See; what did I tell you?" he asked as he looked down at the small girl.

"Mayu honey, are you ok?" Inu asked as he walked to the side of her bed.

Kagome stood where she was as tears clouded her vision. Mayu nodded slowly as she looked up at the old man beside her.

The old man's smile widened. "How do you feel little doe?" He asked.

"I'm ok," she mumbled. "My head hurts awful bad though."

Raven Claw ran his hand under the girl's head and pressed on her neck. "This will make it go away," he said as he pressed on the pressure point in the center of her neck. "Now, how do you feel, little doe?"

She blinked up at him. "It feels better. Are you Mr. Dumbledore from Harry Potter?" she asked in awe.

The old man laughed. "Something like that." He looked over to Inu Yasha. "Alright, Inu Yasha, you know what to do."

Inu Yasha nodded and pulled a chair up next to Mayu's bed as he began to say a prayer in the Cherokee language.

Kagome looked up at the old man in disbelief then after the prayer was over, threw her arms around him. "Thank you so much!" she sobbed.

Raven Claw laughed and hugged her back. "You're welcome, it was no problem at all," he said.

Mayu looked nervously up at Inu Yasha. "Do we still have to leave?" she asked sadly.

Inu Yasha looked over to the small girl. "Don't worry about that right now, ok?"

Raven Claw looked at the girl as well. "You have to worry about getting well, little doe, and nothing else."

She looked up at the old man. She whispered softly in a barely-there voice. "I don't want to get better if I can't stay with Daddy..."

The older man frowned. "Now, that's no way to talk, little doe," he scolded lightly as he touched her nose with a finger.

Kagome felt tears spill over her cheeks and she closed her eyes. "Mayu honey, Mommy will get another job and she'll be able to send you to school like you always wanted, remember?"

Mayu scowled. "I don't want to go anymore! I want to stay with Daddy! Even if he doesn't love us anymore I still love him!"

Inu Yasha's grandfather glared over at him. "What have you done this time, Inu Yasha?"

Inu Yasha lowered his head. "Hla-ya-gwa-nv-ta."

Raven Claw frowned. "What do you mean, `I don't know?!" Inu Yasha looked up at his grandfather with regret written on all over his face. "Inu, you need to figure out what you did, and fix it. Do you understand?" his grandfather scolded him.

Mayu Scowled and stood up on her bed, with her hands on her hips. Kagome gasped. "Mayu!"

The little girl ignored her and tattled it all to the old man. "He fired Mommy and made Mommy cry and he's making us go away!"

Kagome stared sadly at Mayu. "Mayu, that's not it exactly..."

"Kagome said she was going to leave, Mayu," Inu Yasha said barely above a whisper. "So, I gave her what she wanted."

Mayu stared at her mother and tears gathered in her eyes. "Why? You love Daddy don't you? Why do you want to leave?!"

Kagome's eyes filled with tears and she ducked her head. "Because Mommy is hurting Daddy being where she is..."

Raven Claw watched as the drama unfolded. "Alright, everyone calm down. Little Doe needs peace and quiet to heal. So I say both of you get out now," he said as he scolded the supposed adults. "I will stay with her and make sure nothing happens."

Kagome nodded and headed out of the hospital room, her head ducked shamefully. Inu Yasha followed her looking just as pitiful as she did.

Mayu looked up at Raven Claw desperately. "Can't you make them better? Mommy has been like this ever since Daddy got sick. Maybe they're both just sick and need medicine." Her little girl reasoning was the only thing making sense at the moment to her and it was confusing her. Wasn't she supposed to be the little kid?

Raven Claw smiled as he sat down in the chair that Inu Yasha was sitting in earlier. "No, Little Doe, only they can fix this," he said as he brushed the dark bangs from the little girls face.

Mayu sighed and settled against the bed and stared off to the side miserably. "Okay..." Kagome looked up at the man across from her. "Inu Yasha..." she started timidly.

Inu Yasha looked over to Kagome. "Nani wa?" he asked as he opened a coke that he just got from the vending machine.

She searched his eyes and dove into what was on her mind. "I love you, Inu Yasha, and I love Mayu too. I love the boys, and everything about you guys. I just don't want to see you stretched out over the fact that you are with Kouga and have to live with me. I didn't want to go; I just didn't want to see you hurt!"

Inu Yasha wrinkled his nose at what she just said. "Well, what would you like for me to do, Kagome? Call it off with Kouga so we can settle into a nice home life or something?" he asked.

Kagome scowled darkly at him. "Why do you do that?"

He scowled back. "Do what?"

"Get all sarcastic and snappy."

Inu Yasha growled. "Anata ne! Nan desu ka?!" He yelled as he got up into her face. "What in the fuck do you mean by me? What are you the innocent bystander now or something?"

"I never said that, did I!? Why the hell are you screaming at me now?! I don't know what to do! OK?" She shoved his shoulder, her frustration erupting. "I can't help the way things are God Dammit, why don't we just have Kouga fucking move in and have a happily settled little family with him too? Huh? Would that appease your needs, mister-I-can't-show-my-god-damn-feelings-for-anyone-because-I'm-scared-some thing-good-might-actually-happen!?"

Inu Yasha growled as he turned his back on her to walk down the hall. "Oitoma ...sayonara, Higurashi-san," he said as he lazily waved his hand at her and walked down the hall.

Kagome reached up and yanked him back by the hair. "I don't think so!" She grabbed his shoulders and made him face her. "You are not walking out of here until we figure something out because Mayu is nothing short of miserable! Damn Inu Yasha, if you can't love me, then at least love her!"

"I do love her!" he shouted back. "You were the one ready to take her from me! Or do you not remember?!"

The girl stared at him with tears in her angry eyes. "Maybe I wanted you to stop me and show me you actually give a damn! Not every thing is bad in the world, Inu Yasha! Stop acting like every one around you that you care about is going to disappear and open up god damn it! Show some bloody affection! Maybe I wanted you to stop me and show me you actually give a damn!"
