Hurt flashed in Inu Yasha's eyes. "I do give a damn, Kagome!" he shouted. "I was just doing what I thought was best for you."
"What was best for me?" She looked down at the ground, her hair cascading to brush against her face. "So you aren't a heartless bastard?" The girl lifted her chin to look him in the eye with a sad little smile. "Careful, you might shatter what I was trying to convince myself of."
Inu Yasha snorted and turned his head to look at the wall "Don't worry, you're right, I am a heartless bastard."
Kagome watched him silently for a minute then reached down and grasped his fingers in her hand. "Not really..."
He turned his dark eyes to her face. "I know I am," Inu Yasha said as he pulled his hand from hers. "And I'm not going to change."
She watched as he did this and sat back against the wall looking down at her feet. "Alright...if that's how you want it."
Inu Yasha sighed. "Go and be with Mayu, Kagome. She needs you more than I do."
Kagome pushed away from the wall and walked away, but not before her words left her lips. "She needs you more than she needs me."
"I don't think so, you're her mother."
"...her mother who killed her father... and who is now taking her away from her other one."
Inu Yasha scowled. "That bastard deserved what he got. So stop fucking dwelling on it."
Kagome spun around and looked at him. "You weren't the one who shot and killed him!" Tears gathered in her eyes. "He may have been an asshole, but he was still another human being, Inu Yasha!"
"He didn't register a human, Kagome! That's the point, he behaved like a wild animal that needed to be put down!" he shot back. "You did the world a fucking favor!"
"He was Mayu's only link to a decent family, and I killed him! Now she will never know a family that doesn't have a father in it period! Jesus Christ, Inu Yasha, I went through that, I never wanted that for her!"
His eyes widened "You call him decent! What the fuck kind of family was he raised in to make him act like that?"
She glared at him. "One without a father! That's why I'm scared for Mayu! Look at me! I didn't have a father either! Look what I turned out like! That's the last thing I want for her!"
Inu Yasha looked Kagome square in the eyes. "There is nothing wrong with you. Get through your thick skull, damn it."
Kagome looked at him, and then turned her head. "Inu Yasha the point is I'm taking her away from family again and she's going to grow up to be a spiteful adult."
"I didn't have my family always .So?" he said as he pulled his hair back into a low ponytail.
The girl sunk down against the wall and closed her eyes. "I just... don't know what to do."
Inu Yasha walked over and stood in front of her. "I tell you what you need to do." He turned and pointed to Mayu's room. "Get in there and be with your little girl."
Kagome stood up and pushed past him towards the room. "Fine."
Inu Yasha sighed as he leaned against the wall. "Damn, I need a cigarette," he muttered to himself.
Mayu looked up at her mother as she entered the room. "Mommy? Is Daddy still here?"
The young woman looked straight at Mayu. "Mayu, you don't have a Daddy. Inu Yasha is just my ex-employer and you real father died when I shot him."
Mayu just stared at her mother with tears gathering in her young eyes.
Raven Claw looked at the small girl. "Now, now, Little Doe, don't cry," he said as he placed a hand on the girls shoulder.
Mayu just shrugged and mumbled. "No it's ok... it's not like she's wrong..." She stared down at the foot of her bed. "I guess I just wanted to believe that he wasn't like Daddy... that maybe he loved me..."
Kagome watched her daughter for a moment then knelt beside the bed. "Mayu, he does love you... but he can't be your daddy. Tears gathered in her eyes as she smiled slightly. "He loves Kouga, and I have to respect that."
Mayu studied her face and sat back against the pillows. "But why can't you love him to?" she asked meekly.
Kagome sighed. "I do... it just hurts him when he loves two people... so I'm trying to make sure he wont have to love me." Her words choked with pain made Mayu reach out and rub her hand, like her mom always did for her when she was sad.
Raven Claw frowned. "Can you two not come to a middle ground on this?" he asked.
Kagome lifted her eyes to the old man. "I wish we could... I just don't know how..."
"Well if you can't stay with him, you're more than welcome to come to my home," he said with a smile. "I like Little Doe, and I know she will like it there."
The young woman stared up at him in surprise. "Sir, I'm grateful, but I wouldn't want to burden you!"
Raven waved her off. "It's no problem as long as you don't mind doing a little farm work."
Mayu grabbed her mother's hands and turned pleading eyes up to her. "Please, Mommy!! It would be so fun!"
Kagome looked up at the man. "Are you sure it wouldn't be too much trouble?"
He shook his head no. "No, it wouldn't be a problem. It will give Inu time to cool off, and I actually need the help."
Kagome smirked. "I'll beat any work record that any man has ever made."
Mayu giggled. "Mommy's really strong!"
Raven smiled. "And stubborn, I'm sure, since she had to deal with Inu so much."
Mayu made a face. "They are just alike but they wouldn't admit it."
Kagome made a face at her little girl and hugged her, smiling. "I'm just glad you're alright."
"The old ways of medicine are better than the ones we have now a days," he said as he bagged up his things.
The woman stood and hugged the man tightly. "I can't tell you how grateful I am for what you've done."
The old man laughed. "It's no problem. By the way, my name is Raven Claw, may I ask what yours is, miss?"
Kagome smiled. "I'm Kagome Higurashi."
Mayu bounced up and down on the bed. "How come Mommy doesn't have an Indian name?"
Kagome laughed. "I do honey, it's Raging Bitch."
Raven laughed hard at this. "That's an original one."
She shrugged slightly. "Eh, no really, my grandfather named me Broken Dawn. He's big into his heritage and always wanted me to get into it." She laughed nervously and rubbed the back of her neck nervously. "All of my grandparents fought over me under which heritage to train me under."
"We had that fight also, but Inu Yasha tried to learn about his entire heritage. He wanted to be well rounded," Raven said as he rolled his eyes. "But as you can see, he leans more towards the Japanese ways more then anything."
The girl scowled. "Yes I noticed, since English isn't good enough for him."
Raven laughed. "Inu speaks some Spanish, very broken English, a bit of the Cherokee language, and Japanese."
Kagome blinked and looked at him, her eyes wide. "You're Cherokee?"
Raven nodded. "Yes, I am. Why what did you think I was?" he asked a smug grin.
The girl laughed nervously. "Uh... well something that was a bit less hostile with the Comanche?"
He raised a brow. "Why, are you Comanche?"
She held up one finger and laughed anxiously. "Uh... 1/4 ... actually..."
"That's ok, I'm only 3/4 Cherokee," he said. "The rest is Irish. What a combination that is," Raven said with a smile.
The girl giggled and wrapped her arms behind her back. "Well, I'm 1/4 Irish too, so I guess we'll work on that and make peace with tribal differences."
"I'm sure we can," he said as he patted Mayu on the head. Just then, Inu Yasha opened the door and peeked inside.
"Is it ok to come in?" he asked quietly.
Mayu's eyes hardened slightly and she looked down at the ground while Kagome nodded.
Inu Yasha crept in with hands behind his back and walked over to Mayu. "I have something for you, Mayu-chan."
"What is it?" she mumbled, picking at the blankets over her legs.
The boy held out a big pink fluffy teddy bear out to her. "I bought it for myself, but then I remembered I didn't like pink," he said as he laughed.
The little girl started to brighten and smile up at him, but she bit it back quickly and looked down. "Thanks."
Inu Yasha's face dropped the smile it had. "Mayu, please..."
Raven looked over to Inu Yasha. "Inu, I'm going to need you and your friends for a few days; I really need the help at the ranch," he said.
Inu Yasha looked over to him. "But...but, I thought you wouldn't need me for a few weeks yet," Raven raised a brow. "Things have changed."
Mayu looked up at Raven Claw and tilted her head to the side. "Even though Inu Yasha's not my Daddy, can I still call you Grandpa?"
Inu Yasha frowned. "Who said I wasn't your daddy?" he asked.
Raven Claw smiled at the little girl. "Yes, Little Doe, you can call me Grandpa."
Mayu smiled up at Raven Claw, and then turned to Inu Yasha. "You did."
"I didn't say that," he said sadly. Inu Yasha shook his head. "Well, I guess I'm going to leave. I hope you enjoy the bear, Mayu," he said as he turned and left the room.
"Puppy, wait!" Mayu called at the last minute, looking up with tears in her eyes.
Inu Yasha opened the door and peeked back in. "Nani, Mayu chan?"
The tears threatened to spill over and her voice shook. "Why don't you love us anymore? Was it because of the food fight? I'll clean it up, I promise!"
Inu Yasha fought back tears of his own as he stepped back into the room. "I love you with all my heart, Mayu, please don't think that I don't," he said as he walked to her bed.
She sniffed as her cheeks soon were soaked. "Then do we have to be this way?" The little girl wiped her nose on the sleeve of her hospital gown and sniffed again.
Inu Yasha sat down on the bed and hugged the girl tight. "We will figure out something, Mayu, I promise."
The door opened as Miroku peeked his head inside. "Is this a private party, or can any one join?"
Raven Claw laughed. "Hello, Miroku, long time no see."
Sango waved slightly at Kagome. "Hey.."
"Sango!" Kagome sobbed in relief. The two friends raced towards one another, embracing each other tightly.
"We came as soon as we could..." Sango mumbled, squeezing Kagome tightly.
Kouga walked in with Souta and Shippou in tow.
"Well, looks like you brought an army with you, Miroku." Inu Yasha smiled, glad to see his lover.
Miroku laughed as he walked over to Mayu and put a flower behind her ear and gave her a kiss on the cheek. "Nothing is going to keep me away from my girl," he said as he gave Mayu a wink.
Mayu giggled, and sniffled through her tears, smiling. "Hey, Shippou! Hey, Souta!"
Shippou and Souta bounded up onto the bed. "Mayu!" they squealed and lunged at her, giving her bear hugs.
Kagome laughed looking over at the celebrating trio, wiping her eyes. Sango pulled back.
"Are you ok? I saw all your bags laying in the hallway, is something wrong?"
Kagome giggled and wiped her nose. "I've been fired, and we're moving out."
Sango's jaw dropped. "What?!"
Inu Yasha flinched as he felt Kouga's glare on the back of his head. "Hey, she was going to leave anyway!" he said in self defense. "But she is welcome to have the job back, if she wants it."
Kagome stared at the ground. "I think a break would be best for all of us. We're only going to be at each other's throats as soon as I stuff my crap back into place with the way we're going right now. Maybe after a small hiatus from each other."
Mayu looked up at Inu Yasha, her eyes wide. "Really?! You don't want us to go away?"
Inu Yasha smiled. "No, I want you to stay."
Souta sat there and pouted. "But Kagome doesn't want to stay."
Kagome smirked down at the little boy. "Now, who wouldn't want to live with you boys and watch you grow up?" She giggled as she walked over to Shippou and scooped him up, hugging him close to her chest. She smiled sadly. "I couldn't walk away from you guys now. I don't care if Inu Yasha got a restraining order; I have to be with you kids."
Souta and Shippou giggled as Inu Yasha wrinkled his nose at Kagome.
"Now that that is settled, you all are coming to my ranch for a few days," Raven said as he looked around the room. "And I mean all of you," he said as he looked at Miroku, who was getting ready to grab Sango's ass again.
Sango instinctively reached back and grabbed his hand whipping him around to glare up into his eyes. "Will you stop grabbing me and do something more worthwhile?"
Miroku smirked as he broke free of her hold. "Alright," he said as he wrapped his arms around her and gave her a deep kiss.
Sango's eyes widened and she whimpered against his lips, but closed them, melting into his kiss. Her arms tightened around him and she pressed herself closer to his warm body.
Kagome stood in front of the kids, distracting them. "Annnnnnd that's a wrap, folks! Who wants ice-cream??"
Miroku let Sango go and blinked. "Well, that wasn't the reaction I was expecting." Everyone in the room laughed as the boys jumped up and down on the bed, wanting ice cream.
Sango smirked at Miroku, her face heated. "Well, you'd be surprised at the reactions I would give you..."
Kagome cleared her throat loudly and Mayu giggled. "Okay, we are getting Mayu released and going for Dairy Queen. Anybody who wants extra sugar better be in the car, strapped in, and playing the quiet game."
Raven Claw stood up and swung his bag over his shoulder. "Well, I take that as my cue to go home."
Inu Yasha got up and walked over to his grandfather and gave him a grateful hug. "Thanks again, old man. I appreciate it." Raven hugged his grandson back. "It was nothing, Inu."
Kagome left the room to go sign everything off with the nurses, leaving Mayu alone with Inu Yasha as everyone else cleared out. She looked up at him and smiled shyly. "I really do like the bear."
Inu Yasha smiled. "I'm glad. When I saw it, I thought you would like it."
Mayu leapt up from the bed and flung her arms around his neck. "Thank you...Daddy."
Inu Yasha hugged her tight. "You're welcome my little girl," he said as he closed his eyes and began to cry. "I was so scared I was going to lose you."
Mayu sniffed again and buried her face into his shoulder. "Nah... You still haven't made nice with Mommy. And you need my help... I wouldn't leave you yet."
Inu Yasha set the small girl down on her bed and then wiped his eyes. "Whether your mommy believes it or not; she is one of my best friends," he said as he took a seat next to her.
The little girl nodded and leaned against her. "I know it, but she's lived with my other Daddy for so long... that it's hard for her to see herself as the great Mommy she is."
He nodded. "I know," Inu Yasha smiled. "Grandpa said he will have a present waiting for you when we go to his house."
Mayu smiled. "The best present I could ever have... is you and Mommy." She linked her fingers through Inu Yasha's and smiled up at him, swinging her legs back and forth.
Inu Yasha smiled "But grandpa gives good presents," he said with a wink. "You will love it."
She giggled. "Ok! I can't wait!"
