Chapter 3: Closer Than Before

Pale clawed hands ran down the sides of her lithe body. Hot breath whispered against equally hot skin as Kagome found herself in unfamiliar territory. She thrashed her head back and forth as she felt her mystery lover's mouth descend onto her trim stomach. A rough tongue slowly made a path down and around her belly button before coming to its destination. She let out a hiss of pleasure as those same lips found her nest of dark curls. Kagome let out a groan as her folds were parted to give her lover access to her bundle of nerves. As he continued to lap at her most intimate place, she started feeling that building coil nestled within her stomach. She could no longer take his pain staking slow torture as she grabbed a handful of his moonbeam hair and tugged him up.

Wait…silver hair?

“Inu Yasha?...” Golden eyes looked up from between her legs and she felt her breath hitch, those golden orbs were slowly seeping red with lust…for her. This was a full blooded demon with no fuzzy ears. She slowly swallowed and willed herself not to panic before those now lust red eyes flashed to black.

No, this was no ordinary demon, but something much more.

She could not make out his face, only his golden eyes as her lover made his way back up her body. His pale lips hovered over her own.

“Seal it…with a kiss, my temptress.” His voice was husky and velvety with his passion. As his lips came closer, she began to notice an annoying sound coming from her side. She glanced over to see her alarm clock. Her lover gave it a glare that could freeze hell before turning back to her. “Soon, my tenshi…I will have you…”

Kagome sat up straight in her bed, her alarm clock going off. She gave a groan before hastily shutting off the annoying contraption.

“Death to alarm clocks, everywhere…” she grumbled as she slowly made her way out of bed. Glancing down, she noticed how sticky between her legs felt. Giving a groan she decided it would be best to take a nice cold shower before heading into work. That dream had left too much evidence on her body and she didn't want Inu Yasha to say anything about the scent of arousal upon her body.

Stepping into the shower, she pondered her dream lover.

“Who was that?” she asked out loud to herself. She had foolishly thought it was Inu Yasha at first when she noticed the silver hair. But Inu Yasha's wasn't as nice as his. Her dream lover's hair was like moonbeams running through her fingers and his eyes, dear Kami, how she loved his golden eyes. Inu Yasha had amber eyes, not to be confused with the…whatever he was…eyes. Yes, what was he. I thought at first he was youkai. But no youkai eyes turn black. Coming out of the shower she went into her room to dress for work, simple black pants and black shoes with a button up white shirt. She threw her wet hair into a pony tail before heading downstairs to fix herself a quick breakfast.

Kirara and Buyo awaited her so they too could have their breakfast. Kagome gave each a loving scratch behind the ears and she started to walk around the kitchen.

“Well guys. I think I have finally come to a decision.” She told her cats. They looked back up at her from the floor. “I need a room mate.” Yes, I like my privacy but with Mamma gone and Souta at University, it's kind of lonely here. She looked back at the cats as she finished her breakfast. At least, I need something that can talk back to me.

Why did his tenshi torture him so? He was beginning to hope that those fools would free him. But Sesshomaru had lost hope for his freedom the moment the vampires cursed him. He was no longer the demon he was before. Sure he looked the same, but there was the hunger. Dear Kami, the hunger. The undying cravings of fresh blood split from an open wound. As a demon, there was always the satisfaction of seeing your enemy's blood on your claws. But now, it was the satisfaction of it running down the back of his throat. The purer the blood, the more satisfying the taste.

Perhaps, his temptress did exist and was not a figment of his imagination. Did he even have an imagination? He couldn't remember, but that was beside the point. The point being, he needed to find his tenshi so when he was freed, he would know exactly where to find her.

Sometimes being a vampire had its kicks.

It wasn't going to be easy with the state he was in. But being a dog demon made it a little simpler. He already had an established mind link with a lone wolf in the Western Lands. The wolf had some type of foreign blood running through his veins making him practically immortal. Hopefully, he was still around after all this time.

He mentally reached out with his mind but was met with a haze. The sealing spell was a little stronger than he thought. It wouldn't let him reach out. Well, that wasn't going to stop him. He pushed harder and if he had been able to, he would be sweating with the effort.

A low growl echoed through his mind.

And Bingo was his name-o.

*Lord Sesshomaru, it has been a long time.* So, the old wolf was still around.

*Hai, it has been. I need a favor of you.* he mentally asked the wolf.

*I am in your debt, ask me what you will* the ancient words of servitude echoed through Sesshomaru's mind. Yes, the decision to contact the wolf would serve him well in his purpose.

*I need you to find this woman.* he sent a mental picture of his tenshi to the wolf. He could feel the stirrings from the wolf through the mind link. It was the upcoming joy of a hunt. *She is not to be harmed if found. I want her alive.*

*If I may ask, what is her purpose?* Yes, what was her purpose? Did he merely want to see if she really existed? Sesshomaru thought back to his recent dream. His tenshi had called him Inu Yasha. Even after all these years that damn hanyou haunted him. But how could the temptress know his brother?

*I desire to make her my mate. I want you to protect her.* Especially Inu Yasha. It was a long shot but he had made up his mind. If she did exist, she would belong to him and no other.

*As you wish, it shall be done.* He felt the mind link close between the two of them and let out a mental sigh of satisfaction. Still, why did she say Inu Yasha's name? Could the hanyou still be alive? And what was he to his mate-to-be?

Kagome walked into work feeling the worse for wear. The after effects of her dream were still fresh within her mind and she still had to confront Kaede and Inu Yasha. She had the large book tucked under her arm as she headed towards Kaede's office.

“Enter child.” An old voice echoed into the hallway where she stood. Kagome took a deep breath and prepared herself.

“Captain.” Kagome addressed as she sat down before the large desk with the book on her lap. Kaede looked at her a moment, sparing the book a fleeting glance before settling her attention back to Kagome. “I demand to know about the case concerning the killings of mikos.”

“I had a feeling you would get suspicious. It is nothing you should worry about.” Kaede answered her.

“I have every right to be worried about it.” Kagome snapped at her before calming herself. She took a deep breath, counted to ten and sat the book before Kaede. “Within that book are detailed maps where supposedly a powerful youkai turned vampire is sealed. That tomb is on my family's property. I am safe in assuming that my family was the guardians and over time they lost track of their duties.” Kaede ignored her in favor of the book. Her old face was contorted in disbelief.

“I would have never guessed your family was the guardians.” She mumbled to herself.

“Captain, what is going on?” Kagome asked quietly. “This is my case and I have every right to know what is happening to these girls. For all I know, this could explain Kikyo's disappearance.”

“Hai child. I have a suspicion that is what happened. But no body has been found and there is a small part of me that knows she still lives. The question is why she is still living while the others are dead?”

“Kaede,” Kagome stood up and leaned over the desk. “What did my family forget to protect? What is really happening here?”

“It is not my place to tell.” Kaede had flipped through the book and landed on the faded portrait. “The person to ask or hanyou…is Inu Yasha. It is his story to tell and his alone. My ancestors were only the ones to seal the monster.”

“How can anyone be a monster?” Kagome asked softly. Kaede looked up at her with sad eyes full of wisdom beyond her years.

“I wonder how you can be so compassionate in this line of work.”

“It's a gift.” Kagome shrugged her shoulders. Kaede nodded her head before gesturing for her to sit back down. She did as she was told as Kaede picked up the phone. She dialed a couple numbers before waiting. A gruff `what' was heard on the line.

“Inu Yasha,” Kaede's voice rang through the office. “I have before me the last Guardian of the Tomb. She's demanding answers.” Kagome could hear Inu Yasha cursing on the other end of the phone before he replied. Kaede hung up the phone and leaned back in her chair. A moment later Inu Yasha came storming into the room.

“Where is he, you old hag?!” he demanded and then noticed Kagome. “What? Kagome, what are you doing here?”

“Sit down, Inu Yasha. Kagome has come to me for explanations. But first, you might be interested in this.” Kaede pushed the old book towards Inu Yasha who cursed at the faded portrait.

“He always was a conceited bastard.” He mumbled under his breath. He flipped through a couple pages and hissed when he found the maps. “You walked around the city with this?! Are you crazy or just stupid?”

“I beg your pardon?” Kagome demanded. “I for one have no idea what is going on here. How was I to know that it is dangerous?”

“You're the fucking guardian for crying out loud! Use common sense!” Inu Yasha snapped back at her.

“The guardian of what!!” she stood up and towered over the hanyou. Inu Yasha cowered back before he muttered a `feh'.

“Inu Yasha,” Kaede's voice broke the argument. “I think you need to explain this to her. She does have every right to know.”

“Feh, fine but not here. There are too many unwanted ears. I have a feeling we have a rat.” He grumbled.

“I have also had suspicions of it. But this is not the time. Be careful Kagome. You are both dismissed.” Kaede pointed out the office. Inu Yasha and Kagome stood and left the office. Out of the corner of their eye they could see Kaede put the old book in a safe.

“Well?” Kagome demanded.

“Feh, what?” Inu Yasha kept walked.

“When are you going to tell me?!” Kagome shrieked. Inu Yasha's ears flattened to his head as he whirled around on her.

“Are you trying to make my ears bleed?” she gave him a look that plainly said that wouldn't be the only body part bleeding. “Feh, come over to my place tonight. I will tell you then.”

“Fine.” Kagome said and walked over to her desk to get a start on her paper work.

“Kagome?” she looked up to see Sango standing before her desk.

“What can I do for you, Sango?” Kagome asked.

“I have a huge favor to ask of you.”

“Sure. What can I do?”

“The waterline in my apartment burst and my entire apartment complex is ruined. Since you live alone, I was wondering…you know…” Sango looked sheepish.

“If you could move in with me?” Kagome cocked her head to the side.

“Only temporarily, until I can find someplace else.” Sango waved her hands before her. Kagome smiled.

“Sango, I would be delighted if you stayed with me. I was thinking about getting a room mate anyway. It gets kind of lonely there at the shrine all by myself. You can stay as long as you like!”

“Thank you so much, Kagome. I owe you big time.”

“Don't worry about it. It's no big deal. Do you need help moving your stuff?”

“Could you? We have to brave the waters of my apartment but I want to salvage what I can.” Sango laughed.

“Sure, no problem.” Kagome smiled. “I will meet up with you after I finish this paper work.”

“Thank you again, Kagome.” Sango headed back to her desk. Well, that worked out better than I thought.

“Hentai!” Miroku. Kagome shook her head. The man just could not keep his hands to himself. It was quite the shock to her when on her first day he came up to her and asked her to bear his child. She was actually speechless until Sango clobbered him on the head and apologized for him. From that moment the two women became good friends.

A lone wolf watched the two women exit the apartment dripping wet. One of them fit the mental image his lord sent him. He mentally reached out to his Lord and found it blocked. So, it was indeed true. The Western Lord was in a sealed state. How ridiculous.

“Thanks again, Kagome. I don't know how I will ever pay you back.” The other woman said.

“Sango, I said don't worry about it. I needed to get a room mate anyway.” Kagome answered with a bright smile. The woman now known as Sango smiled back. It was then that the wolf decided to get closer, if only to continue to protect the female until he could get in contact with Sesshomaru again. I hope she's not allergic to dogs. The wolf thought then snorted to himself. That would come back and bite Sesshomaru. Hm, bite. When did he become a comedian?

He huffed. He needed to get out more and this was the perfect opportunity. Holding his large head up high, he pranced out of the alley startling many of the people on the sidewalk. He couldn't blame them. A large dog that came to most of their waists had to be scary.

The next thing the wolf knew he was in the backseat of a vehicle. A face peered at him from the front seat. He recognized it to be of the woman named Sango.

“Oh, Kami, Kagome! He's coming around!” Sango exclaimed. The wolf huffed and tried to sit up and found he couldn't. What in the world is wrong with me?

“Thank goodness! I feel so bad! He so large, I can't believe I didn't see him in the road!” Tear filled sapphire eyes looked at him from a rearview mirror. The woman hit him? With a car? Oh, Lord Sesshomaru, you owe me big time.

“What should we do with him?” Sango asked quietly. Kagome frowned for a moment then perked up.

“We'll just take him back to the shrine and I will heal him. Then he can do whatever he wants I guess.” She glanced in the mirror again and met pale blue eyes. “He is beautiful.”

“Yea, I have never seen such a magnificent creature! Look at his white fur. It looks to be so silky.” Sango said appreciatively. Kagome winkled her nose.

“Maybe, especially after a bath.” A bath? Who did this woman think she was?

“How are we ever going to get him up the shrine steps?” Sango asked. Kagome paled.

“That's a good question. I have no idea. I guess I should just heal him here.” She put the car in park and stepped out. The wolf let out a low growl as the back door was open.

“Careful, Kagome, An injured animal is the most dangerous.”

“I know, Sango. He's just scared.” She offered the back of her hand to the injured wolf. Blue clashed with blue as he moved his muzzle just enough to take a delicate sniff at her. His nostrils were filled with her intoxicating sent of Sakura blossoms. A wolf could get drunk on such a relaxing and soothing scent. “There, see Sango? He's relaxing.” Kagome's hands glow blue to match her eyes as they moved along the animal's body. Sango's eyes widened as she watched. She had never seen a miko in action before. Granted it was just healing, but still.

Fascinating, the wolf thought to himself. She is a miko. Well, his orders were clear. He was to stay and protect his Lord's chosen one. Perhaps being with this human would not be so bad.

Kagome and Sango headed up the stairs, both glanced back to see, in their eyes, the large white dog padding behind them.

“Kagome.” Sango nudged her as Kagome glanced down at the wolf.

“Don't you have a home, boy?” Kagome asked as she crouched down before the dog. The wolf had enough sense to cock his head slightly and perk his ears. This gets them every time.

“Ah, the puppy eyes, careful Kagome. That's how they lure you in.” Sango giggled. Damn woman.

“I can't help it.” Kagome whined. “I can't resist it!” she sighed.

“You give in too easily.” Sango said.

“Good thing the shrine has lots of room.” Kagome muttered as she stood back up and motioned for the dog to follow.

“Since you're adding to the pets' list, you might want to give your new horse a name.” Sango pointed out. The wolf growled at being called a horse but focused his attention on the blue eyed woman who was his new mistress. Kagome tapped her chin a moment before her eyes lit up.

“How about Kaelas?”

(AN: it is pronounced `kay-las' from the book “Heir to the Shadows” by Anne Bishop. I do not own it.)

“Hm…” Sango pondered the beast beside her. “I think its fitting.”

“Alright, then Kaelas you shall be!” Kagome said triumphantly as she unlocked the front door to the house. “I just hope he likes cats.”

“Cats?” Sango asked.

*Cats…great.* Kaelas said to himself.

*Cats?* a silky voice rang through the wolf's head.

*Did you know your woman is a cat person?* Kaelas asked just to irk the Western Lord. There was silence on the other end of his mind.

*You found her?* the Lord finally asked.

*Hai, and if I may say. She is a fascinating creature.* He sent a mental picture of Kagome from his point of view as she healed him.

*She's a miko?* Sesshomaru's voice entered his mind again. Kaelas followed Kagome around the house as he `broadcasted' everything to the vampire Lord.

*Hai, a good one. She healed me, after she hit me with her car.*

*You got hit by a car?* Kaelas refused to answer him. *What is it she is calling you? Damn, I wish I could better hear her voice.*

*She named me Kaelas.*

* Is it an effect of the sealing spell or are you turning into a pet?* Sesshomaru asked with a hint of a humor. Kaelas let out a snort as he watched the woman Kagome show him to the cats. They really were inferior creatures. He could tell one was fat and lazy and the other a neko.
*I was unable to contact you earlier.* Kaelas changed the subject as the two cats played with each other around his feet. He gave them a second glance before returning it to the blue eyed woman before him. She seemed pleased with his reaction and gave him a loving scratch behind his ears. This is nice…a little too nice. I could get use to this `pet' thing.

*I believe the sealing spell is starting to weaken. It may be my imagination but I think I just twitched.* Sesshomaru finally answered. Kaelas gave Kagome an affectionate lick on the cheek before turning his attention back to the conversation.

*I think being sealed has gotten to your mind. What happened to the cold Western Lord feared by all?*

*He died after seeing sapphire blue eyes.* Sango called out to Kagome. *Kagome…it suits you…my tenshi.*

As soon as Kagome finished showing Kaelas around, she showed Sango to her new room. She thought it would be best if she gave Sango her mother's room since it had its own bathroom. It was nicely decorated in soft green hues. Kagome's own room was done in beiges accented in blacks and reds.

“It's beautiful, Kagome.” Sango stood in awe. Kagome placed one of the suitcases on the bed.

“It was my mother's.” Kagome said softly.

“Are you sure about this?” Sango asked.

“Of course I am. My mother is remarried and she moved so it's no big deal. I will leave you alone to settle in. I want to check on Kaelas.”

“That is one big dog, Kagome.”

“I know, perhaps he has wolf in him? That would explain his size and probably why he was wandering the streets.”

“What if he has something? Like worms?” By this time Kaelas had found the two women.

“I will take him to the vet tomorrow. I still need to get ready; I have to meet Inu Yasha at his place.” Kagome gave the horrified wolf a pat on the head.

“What do you need to speak to him about?” Sango asked curiously.

“That's just it. I have no idea what is going on.”

AN: Alright…don't kill me. I am leaving a cliffy…some what. The next chapter will have the confrontation at Inu Yasha's house. And is Sesshomaru's sealing spell really weakening? Or is it just his desire to find Kagome that is making it weaken? STAY TUNED!! Hahaha…REVIEW!
