Chapter 4: Past Recollections
“Talking”
Thinking
*Mind Links*
Kagome went to the closet and grabbed a jacket since the nights had become colder. Kaelas watched her impassively from his place on the floor. It wasn't until she grabbed her car keys that he sat up. Does she really think she is leaving without me? He pondered for a moment how he was going to get her to let him go with her.
“What's wrong?” Kagome asked the wolf. Kaelas gave his most pitiful look and whined. Kagome faltered. “Do you need to go for a walk? Are you hungry? Of course this would happen on my way to Inu Yasha's.” she grumbled. Kaelas cocked his head at her and gave her `puppy eyes'. She gave him a bright smile with her sapphire eyes sparkling. “Alright, I know what your up too.”
“Who's up to what?” Sango asked. Kagome looked up at the detective before patting Kaelas on the head.
“He doesn't want me to leave without him.” Kagome sighed before looking at the wolf. Sango just smiled.
“He's already attached to you, how cute! But you can't take him nowhere without a collar and a leash.” Sango said while she tapped her chin. Kagome nodded then smiled.
“Looks like we will be making a pit stop before going over to Inu Yasha's, besides, maybe he can tell me what type of dog Kaelas is. He is part dog demon after all.” Kagome said while she put on her coat. Sango raised an eyebrow at her.
“Or they could get all territorial on each other.” She said. Kagome snorted.
“I told you, Inu Yasha and I are only partners nothing more. He still pines over Kikyo.” Kagome said as she opened the front door and motioned for Kaelas. “…though those ears of his are hard to ignore.” Sango laughed at her friend who took it upon herself to demonstrate with Kaelas what she wanted to do with Inu Yasha's ears. Kaelas's eyes rolled into his head as Kagome rubbed his ears. This is too addicting. He thought smugly to himself.
“I guess we will be making a pit stop.” Kagome sighed as she stood up. Kaelas let out a pitiful whine as she stopped on his ears. How embarrassing. He thought to himself as he trotted along side Kagome. He leapt into the front seat and sat down. Kagome stared at him in shock before she shrugged her shoulders.
After a quick stop at a pet store, Kaelas was sporting a black leather collar with his name on it. To his horror, Kagome also bought a chain leash. He huffed at her and she laughed.
“You may not like it, but it would make the other people feel much safer. Even if you are like a big teddy bear.” She affectionately rubbed his ears as his eyes rolled into the back of his head. “Come on…let's go and torture Inu Yasha.” I could deal with that. Kaelas thought to himself.
They arrived at a mansion a short while later. Kagome swallowed. Why didn't he say he was loaded?! Kagome demanded to herself. Now she felt horrible for bringing Kaelas, even if the wolf would have followed anyway. She gave a sigh as she hooked Kaelas to his leash and headed up the steps. The door was thrown open by the ugliest green thing she had ever seen.
“Filthy human!” it shrieked. Inu Yasha came from behind the little youkai and kicked him out the door.
“Dammit it, Jaken. Shut the fuck up!” he growled. Jaken got up and brushed himself off.
“First horrible hanyous and now filthy humans, what would Jaken's lord say to this? He would kill them, yes he would. This Jaken is loyal to his lord…they say he is gone but I know…Lord Sesshomaru would never abandon his faithful servant.” Inu Yasha's eye twitched as he gave the toad a good beating.
“I told you to shut up about him!” he cursed. Kagome looked on in amazement while inside, Kaelas was snorting. No wonder Sesshomaru left that green thing behind. He thought as he eyed the hanyou.
“Inu Yasha?” Kagome asked. Inu Yasha stopped his beating of the green youkai and looked up at Kagome. She arched an eyebrow at him and he blushed.
“Feh…come on.” He said. She slowly went to follow him with Kaelas beside her when Inu Yasha suddenly whirled on her. “What the fuck?!” It was Kagome's turn to blush.
“Sorry about Kaelas. I hit him with my car and then healed him. He's taken it upon himself to stay with me.” She gave the wolf a good scratching. Kaelas kept his eyes on the hanyou. Inu Yasha growled at the wolf, who returned it. I can smell my brother. Inu Yasha thought as he glared at the wolf. He watched in horror as the wolf's…because he knew that was what it was…his blue eyes turn to a cold gold. Inu Yasha stumbled back.
“Come on.” He said quietly. He would question the wolf later without Kagome around to think he had gone crazy.
Kagome entered Inu Yasha's home with Kaelas pressed against her hips. She almost stumbled into another person. She excused herself as she looked at…a chest. Her eyes wandered up and she almost gasped. Pair of golden eyes were looking at her blankly before they shone with amusement. This male youkai had eyes almost identical to the male in her dreams. His hair was silver as well and in a pony tail at the base of his head.
“You're going to scare her, Dad.” Inu Yasha said.
“Dad?” Kagome squeaked. Inu Yasho nodded.
“Sugumi Taisho.” He smiled down at her. Kagome's eyes widened.
“The Western Lord?” she asked. He laughed.
“I have not been the Western Lord in a many good centuries.” His eyes twinkled. Kagome frowned.
“Then who is the current Lord? I know Inu Yasha is capable of that.” She said. Kaelas snorted next to her. Sugumi's eyes snapped to the wolf beside her as they widened. It can't be.
“Hey!” Inu Yasha cried. Kagome smiled at him and he immediately blushed.
“My eldest is the Lord.” Sugumi said more to the wolf than Kagome. Her hand buried into Kaelas's fur as she looked at the former Western Lord.
“Eldest?” she asked, for some reason that sent chills up her spine. “Inu Yasha, you never told me you had an older brother.”
“Half brother.” Inu Yasha corrected. Sugumi shot him a glare. Inu Yasha shuffled around under that glare.
“Where is he?” was it hot in there or was it just her?
“Feh, the bastard is sealed and that is where he is going to stay.” Inu Yasha snapped at her. Kagome stumbled back and Kaelas snarled. Sugumi sighed.
“You are here for answers I presume?” Taisho asked. Kagome nodded as her other hand buried into Kaelas's fur. He nodded. “Inu Yasha is not the best to tell you our family's story. He and his brother, Sesshomaru, did not get along.”
“That's an understatement.” Inu Yasha grumbled. Sugumi growled and the hanyou decided to make himself scarce.
“Come.” Sugumi said as he pulled one of Kagome's arms through his. He led her down a hallway with portraits.
It starts with you
One thing,
I don't know why,
It doesn't even matter how hard you try
Keep that in mind I designed this rhyme
To explain in due time
“Is this your family?” she asked. He nodded.
“My son says that your family was guardian of the tomb that contains the Immortal Vampire?” he asked her. Kagome looked up at the male youkai next to her before she nodded. “My son…was a very cold hearted demon. He believed that through strength he could accomplish anything so he closed himself off to what he called `petty human emotions'. I think it was his way of saying he didn't approve of my new mate.”
“Inu Yasha's mother?” Kagome guessed and was rewarded with a nod.
All I know
Time is a valuable thing
Watch it fly by as the pendulum swings
“He was very powerful, though. He surpassed even me…not that I would have told him so…he inherited my ego.” He chuckled. Kaelas snorted at the youkai. Complete understatement. He thought to himself. Sugumi smiled down at the wolf and winked. So he has caught on and is not interfering. So that only leaves the hanyou.
“Believe me, Inu Yasha got it too.” Kagome grumbled and Sugumi burst into laughter. “What happened to your son?” Sugumi immediately stopped laughing.
Watch it count down to the end of the day
The clock ticks life away
It's so unreal
“You catch on quick. Tell me…do you believe in vampires? No? I can tell by the look you are giving me. What would you do if I told you that they are as real as youkai? Fascinating isn't that. Would you believe me if I told you they were more power hungry than any other creature to walk the planet?”
“No.” Kagome stammered. Kaelas gave her a comforting lick on her hand.
Didn't look out below
Watch the time go right out the window
Trying to hold on
But didn't even know
“They admired my son. They wanted his power and strength for their own. They had been banished to the deepest parts of the mountains. They had hoped that with Sesshomaru leading them…they could conquer the youkai. It was only the demons they kept them from using the humans as cattle. Not that they would ever believe it.”
“What did they do to him?” Kagome whispered, feeling her heart contort in pain.
Wasted it all just to
Watch you go
“They turned him, made him into a monster. His power increased ten fold. But the cravings of blood…the shunning of daylight…” Sugumi's voice trailed off.
I kept everything inside and even though I tried
It all fell apart
What it meant to me will eventually be a memory
Of a time when I tried
So hard
“How horrible.” Kagome said, her sapphire eyes brimming with tears.
“He tried to deny what he had become, tried to control the thirst for blood. He drove him mad. He killed recklessly. Dear Kami, he even tried to kill himself.” Sugumi sighed as he looked down at the beautiful miko beside him. Could she be the one? He asked himself. He glanced at the wolf. She has to be. “He even cornered Inu Yasha to try and kill him.”
And got so far
But in the End
It doesn't even matter
I had to fall
To lose it all
But in the End
It doesn't even matter
“Did he?” Kagome asked. Sugumi shook his head.
“No, and that's what did it I think. His own flesh and blood denied him a final request. He left the Western Lands to find a way to destroy what he had become. Eventually, he was subdued by a group of mikos and houshis and imprisoned beneath the earth…to lie for eternity.” Kagome stumbled.
One thing, I don't know why
It doesn't even matter how hard you try
Keep that in mind
I designed this rhyme
To remind myself
I tried so hard
“On the shrine grounds.” Kagome whispered and Kaelas looked up at her. “Dear kami, he is buried on my family's grounds.” Sugumi looked at her before taking her by the shoulders.
In spite of the way you were mocking me
Acting like I was part of your property
Remembering all the times you fought with me
I'm surprised it got so far
“I prayed to any kami that would listen that my son would be spared from his torment. That he would be released from his sealing spell. I believe that person is you, miko, the wolf by your side is proof enough.”
Things aren't the way they were before
You wouldn't even recognize me anymore
Not that you knew me back then
But it all comes back to me
In the End
“Kaelas?” Kagome asked as she looked down into blue eyes. Sugumi nodded.
“A bonder…they are immortal creatures…almost like youkai…only they are also vampire companions.” Sugumi caught her gaze. “He is my son's bonder.” Kagome stumbled back. Sugumi sighed as he picked up a candle and with a touch of his claw it burst into flame. Kagome had never noticed it had gotten dark within the hall. He held the candle to a wall and motioned her to come closer.
You kept everything inside and even though I tried
It all fell apart
What it meant to me will eventually be a memory
Of a time when I tried so hard
It was a painting.
“Kagome…” Sugumi said quietly. “Meet my son, the Western Lord Sesshomaru.”
And got so far
But in the End
It doesn't even matter
Cold gold eyes stared at her. Kagome took a small step forward as her hand went to her mouth. Hair like moonbeams fell down his back as his bangs brushed against his forehead, but never covering the crescent moon upon his brow. Maroon markings graced his cheeks and wrists. He was dressed in the traditional hakamas and hoari with armor.
I've put my trust in you
Pushed as far as I can go
And for all this
There's only one thing you should know
“Dear kami.” She whispered.
I tried so far
And got so far
But in the End
It doesn't even matter
I had to fall
To lose it all
But in the End
It doesn't even matter
It was the same male from her dreams.
