Inu Yasha touched Kagome’s arm and she jerked away from him. His heart stopped and he tried again. “Kagome?”The smell of salt became stronger as she lifted her head and looked at him. The pain was very clear in her eyes as they stared at him.His throat tightened and he pulled her to him. Kagome huddled into his chest clinging to his shirt for dear life. Inu Yasha sat down and pulled her into his lap. Kagome continued to hold on.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
They sat there in the hallway until Kagome fell asleep. Inu Yasha stared at the girl wondering what was going through her head. He sighed knowing he would never know. Picking her up gently he returned down stairs and back into the living room with the other.
“Is she okay?” Shippo asked. He had been told that Kagome was injured but would be fine, he never thought that she was so badly injured that she would bed ridden for weeks. Thankfully that wasn’t going to happen.
“She’s fine, just stressed.” Inu Yasha laid Kagome on the couch and Shippo curled up by her side.
Koga came out from the kitchen he also seemed worried, but knew nothing of the girl besides her street reputation, and beside the fact he liked her.
Sesshomaru stepped out behind Koga. “She will hold our father’s last sword. If it accepts her than who knows what could happen. If it doesn’t than that is a mystery also.” His voice was cold and hard. He had no care as to what happened to the human girl that his friends took a liking to but she had handled his swords and they responded to her as if she were to be his one and only mate. In truth it was unsettling to him. The great lord Sesshomaru.
“She will not hold Sou’unga, over my dead body.” Inu Yasha stepped in front of Kagome as if to ward Sesshomaru away.
“That can be arranged.” Sesshomaru growled.
“You kill me and you might as well kiss you own life goodbye.” Inu Yasha smirked.
“Who will kill me. Surely not you or the wolf.”
“Kagome will.”
“A human can not defeat this Sesshomaru.” Sesshomaru snarled. Inu Yasha knew not to push it farther but he wasn’t letting Kagome touch that sword. Even if he did have to die. The seal would not break.
“Maybe so. But she will not touch that sword.” he snarled back. The demon in Inu Yasha was rising and he felt the little shifts start. The claws, fangs, marks....
“What do you care? She accepted your sword, she accepted the wolf’s, if she is accepted by our fathers who knows what could happen.” Sesshomaru snarled. In truth he was scared to know but all the same, someone at one point had to be able to wield the last great sword of Inu no Tashio.
Koga stepped up next to Inu Yasha and fought not to back away at the power coming from him.
“That sword can not be released. It was once and none of us could control the urges to murder, to kill, to destroy. How is Kagome, a human, going to do better?”
Sesshomaru sighed and held his head in his hand. “She needs only to hold it.” He growled.
Inu Yasha snarled his eyes half way red. Turning he picked up Kagome and headed for the door.
“Where are you going with her?” Shippo cried.
Inu Yasha ignored the kit and left slamming the door. They stood in a hall that led to the elevator.
Inu Yasha rushed to get out of the house. He needed to be far from people.
Inu Yasha leapt from building to building. It was the first time in almost a hundred years he had done so. Kagome was against his chest shivering each time the wind blew. He stopped on the outskirts of the large city and began running to the country. His muscles moving in ways that weren’t natural.
Reaching a old barn that had been left to fall. Inu Yasha finally stopped. There wasn’t anyone for miles. Trees grew around the tilting building. Inside, was dark and musty but dry and semi-clean. Cleaner than the streets where his love grew up. Kagome groaned in his arms and shifted as much as aloud. The demon blood receded and Inu Yasha knelt in a pile of old hay. He laid Kagome down and fixed the robe better around her. He stood staring at the girl until she woke at sunrise. Inu Yasha just realizing how long they had been running, shifted in his place.
Kagome’s eyes fluttered open and focused on Inu Yasha. He was tense. Looking around her she recognized the traits of a barn. Leaning probably. The hay under her was warm but stale. Horse stalls were across from her. Eight in total. She looked to the other side. There was what looked like another room, maybe supply?
“Where are we?” Kagome wiped the sleep from her eyes. She felt tried and slow. Almost week.
“Tell you the truth, I don’t know.” Inu Yasha looked out the barn door that was still open and into the country.
“It’s beautiful.” She whispered.
Inu Yasha thought about making the comment about her being beautiful but knowing Kagome she would deign it. “I guess.” he could see the sun rise from his office or bedroom every morning, it wasn’t new to him. But then again Kagome was enjoying it.
“Kagome?”
“Ya?” She stood from the hay and walked to his side.
“Your coming with me to Colorado right?”
“I told you I would, and even though I don’t make promises, I don’t go back on my word, although I can find a way around it if needed. This though, I see no problem with.” She smiled and he looked down at her as she stood at his side.
“I love you.” He whispered.
Kagome turned and looked into his eyes. She nodded to him and looked back out into the rising sun. “so do I.” she said in a soft voice.
His arm snaked around her waist and pulled her close.
Ahead of them the trees bent and the wind picked up. A small tornado raced towards them and Kagome growled looking for a weapon. Sure a weapon, of any kind, couldn’t cut the wind but this was no normal tornado.
Inu Yasha’s eyes flashed red for a second. Koga came to a skidding halt close to 15 feet away from the barn. Shippo clung to the wolf staring at Kagome and Inu Yasha.
Kagome took a deep breath and exhaled. Her body less tense now then it was seconds ago. Kneeling down Kagome fell back sitting against the barn door and continued to watch the sun rise. Shippo jumped down from Koga’s shoulder and slowly crawled to his adoptive mother’s side. When no one said a word he sat down and leaned into her side. Kagome lifted her arm and placed it around the small kit dragging him to her side more.
They all watched the sun rise until it was no longer touching the horizon and was to bright to see.
Kagome stretched falling backwards. The birds were out now and she could hear them start their morning ritual of hunting for worms. The crickets became silent and the true signs of morning were on the group.
No one said a word not wanting to break the calm morning. A small breeze came and the fields swayed with it.
“I think..” Kagome said from her place on the ground, “that I’m going to go back to the streets.”
Inu Yasha, Koga and Shippo all looked at her.
“WHAT!?” Inu Yasha hissed. He didn’t like the idea very much.
“Not forever, but for a few days. To finish some business.” Kagome jumped up smoothly and started walking into the field.
As she went to pass Koga he stepped into her way.
He handed her a pile of clothes. Kagome stared at them for a few moments then took them and went to barn. She came back out in jeans and a t-shirt. Koga had even brought her other stuff: bra, underwear...
Shippo was now sitting on Inu Yasha. They looked right together and Kagome fought not to smile. She kept everything inside.
“Kagome?” Shippo whined.
Kagome looked to her adoptive son and met his eyes. She saw the start of tears and looked away, there was no way she could do this. She was weak and it would be her death.
“Don’t go.” Inu Yasha’s voice was strong. It surprised even him. “I’ll protect you. We can train every night when we get home. We can move somewhere peaceful. Just don’t leave.”
“It’s not about protection. I am a protector and a keeper all the same. If only it was that easy..” Her hand went to settle right below her ribs on the right side.
“A protector and a keeper.” Koga turned his head and was confused.
“Kikyo.” Inu Yasha whispered.
~~~~~~~~~~Flashback
Inu Yasha stood under the scared tree staring at one of the most beautiful people he had ever know. She was a priestess and keeper of the Shikon No Tama.
“Kikyo, please, I’ll become human with the jewel and you won’t be burdened by it. Then we can live together and grow old together.” Inu Yasha pleaded.
“I am a protector and a keeper all the same. If only it was that easy.......

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~End
Inu Yasha shook his head mentally clearing the long lost thought from his youth. That was what 700- 800 years ago? He looked at Kagome and imagined her in the old traditional Miko garb. The red and white outfit close to that of his fire rat. He had never seen the resemblance but it was very close.
Shippo looked at Inu Yasha at the mention of the odd name. However Shippo could see the pain in Inu Yasha’s eyes for the lost person and for Kagome.
“Don’t leave me again.” Inu Yasha whispered.
He remembered his once beloved being ripped from the world hours before they were to meet. She was wounded and had left his side for only a second, to in turn, be killed by a rogue demon. Her once unscarred body torn to shreds. He stood by even as her body was burned along with the troublesome jewel.
Kagome watched as Inu Yasha zoned in and out. A single tear left his eye, completely unnoticed and untouched.
Inu Yasha fell to his knees more and more memories rushed through his mind.
Kagome knelt beside the half-demon and touched his shoulder that moments ago was take by Shippo. The kit now sitting feet from the couple. Inu Yasha stared blankly into her face.
“Don’t leave me.” He begged.
Kagome wrapped her arms around him and sat down pulling the half-demon into her lap. Inu Yasha whimpered into her neck as Kagome held him.
Koga walked slowly over to the two and knelt down. “I think it’s time we head home.” He offered. Kagome looked up at him and shook her head no.
“I think we’ll stay here all day.” She whispered. “It’s time we had a break.”
Inu Yasha lifted Kagome’s shirt enough to expose the flesh she had touched moment earlier. His hand played along the area of untouched flesh.
“I never asked for it.” She whispered again this time to the man in her arms. He looked up from her shoulder and staring at her skin to stare into her eyes.
“Never wanted what?” Koga asked looking down at the two from behind Inu Yasha.
Inu Yasha turned at looked at him. “The jewel.” He whispered.
Kagome thought that his raspy voice made the moment seem more suspenseful than need but who was she to say.
Inu Yasha trailed his claws over where the jewel lay under the soft unmarked flesh. He wanted to see the jewel that forced Kikyo away from him so long ago but, here in her place, was her reincarnation. Kagome. It was hard to believe that the two were the same person when both were so different. Under the hard shell Kagome had was a kind and soft person that was hurt. Inu Yasha moved his hand up and cupped her cheek forcing the young girl holding him to look into his eyes.
“Don’t leave.” He whispered. Kagome stared into his eyes and hugged him close to her closing her own eyes.
“What am I suppose to do then?” She muttered. Her grip on him just stopped and her arms fell away to the ground.
Koga listened in, happy for his demon hearing. This girl was worried over the Shikon No Tama, course she did have that right but as long as it was in her body asleep as it seemed to be it would be fine. Then again he had seen the scars to know that if she kept fighting there was no guarantee at it staying asleep.
Shippo sat still watching the scene like it was live T.V. His stomach however announced it want for the food he had neglected to put in it before their travels.
All eyes turned to the kit. He smiled innocently.
Kagome tapped Inu Yasha and he moved away from her. “We can talk later with everyone else.” Inu Yasha nodded and helped her stand. Kagome dusted herself off and walked back into the barn. Inu Yasha and Koga followed. They followed her to the storage room that was locked. Kagome growled in annoyance and stepped back. Inu Yasha placed a hand on her shoulder.
“Let me get it, you don’t have shoes on.” Kagome looked down at her feet and growled again. She hadn’t noticed.
Inu Yasha punched a hole in the old wood and ripped the lock and half the door off. Kagome laughed but entered the room anyways.
Inside were old tools and some grain bags that the mice had already gotten to. Kagome looked at the tools, most were rusted or broken. She reached up and grabbed a half-way decent looking scythe. She walked out and Shippo cringed at the image of Kagome thinking of the grim reaper rather than his adoptive mother.
Kagome walked past the boy and into the field towards a patch of trees. The scythe in her right hand over her shoulder. Inu Yasha and Koga peeked out of the barn watching the girl leave.
“Where you going with that hunk of junk?” Koga called.
Kagome just waved to him and continued walking.
The sun was high in the sky and all three boys looked towards the north, the same way Kagome had disappeared. A small figure was walking towards them. It was hard to tell who it was but all three had a firm idea it was Kagome.
The figure never seemed to slow down or speed up. As it got closer it was obvious it was Kagome. Shippo scrambled from his place on a bed of hay to watch as Kagome came back. Koga and Inu Yasha waved from their place at the roof of the barn. The building was firm even in it’s age.
Kagome came to a stop in front of the barn. She had found little to eat in the first few miles of their location and changed direction every few miles. She had, however; found a few apple trees and a small stream. The old farming tool had helped catching fish and knocking apples loose of their branches. To bring all this stuff back she had pulled off her shirt and placed the fish in it. Luckily before she found anything she had found another barn and ‘borrowed’ a blanket from it’s storage. No one would miss it, let alone know it was her.
The fish were wrapped in her shirt still somewhat cool. The apples tucked in the blanket.
“Since food out here is fend for you self. Here.” She tossed both bundled on the ground and headed into the barn to replace the tool.
When she came out Shippo was gathering some hay and Inu Yasha was tearing up the door he had broke. Koga was up in the second area of the barn doing who knew what. Sitting down on the ground, Kagome closed her eyes and let the wind push her hair around. It took less than 5 minutes to become bored. Standing kagome went and fetched the scythe. No one paid much attention to her and Kagome could care less. Standing in the middle of the field she began spinning and swinging out with her make-shift weapon. So it wasn’t a sword, it still worked, and she couldn’t complain.
Inu Yasha threw something at Koga to get his attention. The wolf growled and snapped but didn’t say a word. Inu Yasha pointed out the barn doors at the woman in the field. Koga jumped from the loft and watched. Both demons were amazed, she looked like a pro.
“Put her in full black, and she might pass as the grim reaper.” Koga gulped.
They watched as Kagome lashed out again and again, cutting the chest high grasses.
“Fire is ready.” Shippo called using a lighter Koga had gave him. He looked out into the field at his adoptive mom. He knew her reputation and was hardly surprised at her fluency. Shippo took and tossed a few of the fish into the fire poking at them with a stick.
Kagome tossed the scythe up and flipped, catching it again and throwing it into the field spinning. Looking back at the barn she watched the two demons stare at her. Shippo cooking. Turning away from their faces she stared out into the field.
Inu Yasha walked into the field and placed his arms around Kagome. From lust to Love, he couldn’t believe it. Kagome seemed to ignore him at first but soon leaned into his touch. It was a soft touch but Inu Yasha let out a sigh.
“Kagome?” She gave a huff. “No one needs to know of the jewel, and no one needs to know of anything we do. Let us live in peace.” Inu Yasha whispered the last word. Kagome looked up at him for a second then away.
“There is no peace in the world. You may build yourself in a world where there is peace but it isn’t the real world.” She stepped away from him and walked to the barn. Shippo pushed a fish out of the fire and Kagome began picking at it.
Koga walked up to Inu Yasha and placed a hand on his friend’s shoulder.
Kagome pushed open the door to the apartment and continued walking to her room. She let out a long sigh. Inu Yasha and Koga both had been trying to talk to her for the past 3 hours. Shippo asked if she was ok and then dropped it and for that she was grateful. She kicked off her shoes and padded to the bed and fell on it. D
Inu Yasha walked after Kagome. She hadn’t said a word to him after their conversation before breakfast. The day had been quiet. She had take a post at the peak of the barn’s rook and watched the horizon, as if she longed for something.
“Kagome?” He tried again. If she didn’t answer this time he would sleep in the living room and give her space.
“Ya?” came her muffled reply from the bed.
“You want me to still stay in here with you tonight?” He tread carefully into the room.
“I’m not staying.” Came her reply. She looked up from the bed. “I’m so tired but I just can’t stay.”
“We’re leaving tomorrow.” Inu Yasha growled. He wasn’t going to lose her just because of the damn jewel in her body. He would protect her. If it was the thing he ever did.
“Leaving for where?” Kagome sat up quickly.
“Colorado. I’m not losing you. I have a friend that can help us with the jewel. I’ll drag you clear to Antarctica to keep you safe.” The growl continued.
“Inu Yasha.” Kagome didn’t know if it was compassion or fear in her voice. Either way they came from her heart.
“Inu Yasha, let me do one thing. You can even come with me. But I can just leave. There maybe other protectors of the city and they may hate me right now, but there is a family that I just can’t leave blindly. A family that is like you and me.” She sat on the edge of the bed now. “Let me finish my job, before you take me away.” she growled back at him. Inu Yasha took a step back and his growling subsided.
“I’m going to change then I’m leaving to take care of this family. You can come or you can stay.” Kagome stood and Inu Yasha left. Kagome took a deep breath and held back tears as the door shut.
Kagome changed and smoothed down the leather. She reached for one of the belts and thought twice. It was the first time she doubted what she was doing. Was saving the population of a large cities poor communities worth her own happiness. She could just leave and forget them. Shaking her head she cleared those thoughts they were selfish and corrupt. Thinking that way would get her killed.
Before she knew it, lost in her thoughts, she was ready to go. Someone knocked on the door. “Come in.” her hand went the her knife on instinct.
Sesshomaru walked in proud as always. He held a black box wrapped in a black ribbon. He sat it on the bed. “A gift to you.” Bowing he left the room.
