Chapter 17: Sesshoumaru in Higurashi Shrine

Kagome and Inuyasha landed gently on the bottom of the well together and realized that Sesshoumaru was next to them looking up the well. He turned to them indifferently when they appeared.

"Sesshoumaru, please…" Kagome begged. "Let's go back. Sakura will come this evening."

Sesshoumaru remained silent and jumped out from the well.

"Aughhh!!!!" Kagome screamed reaching for the ladder but Inuyasha grabbed her waist and jumped up from the well with Kagome in his arm.

"Sesshoumaru, you won't like it here!" Inuyasha said. "You better go back!"

"Why do I only smell humans?" Sesshoumaru asked turning around to look at Inuyasha and Kagome.

"It is because I have feeling there is no Youkai in this time…" Kagome said softly.

"Nani?" Sesshoumaru frowned. He pushed the thought away for the main reason was to find Sakura. "Where is Sakura?"

"She is not here…" Kagome moaned.

"Bring me to her…"

"I can't," Kagome protested.

Sesshoumaru grabbed her neck then and lifted her up slightly. Inuyasha unsheathed his tetsaiga quickly.

"Let her go!" Inuyasha said. "She said that Sakura is in her home town far from here. She will be back this evening…"

"Please…" Kagome begged her feet daggling in the air slightly. "Sakura will return… if you could wait…"

"Sesshoumaru, what would Sakura think if you kill the person she love and cared for?" Inuyasha shouted.

Sesshoumaru expression changed for a moment and Inuyasha knew he had hit a nerve.

"She would not like it if she knew that you try to hurt Kagome!" Inuyasha continued.

Sesshoumaru let Kagome go so abruptly she stumbled to the ground but Inuyasha caught her in his arm before she hit the dirt floor. They watched him turned away and headed for the door sliding it opened he stepped out. Kagome scrambled out with him quickly.

"Sesshoumaru, I must warn you that…" She stopped in mid sentenced when she saw Sesshoumaru cringe his nose slightly. "... you won't like the environment here…" She finished her sentence off lamely.

"I could smell the foul smell too." Inuyasha said as he emerged behind them not long later. "But as I am not a full youkai it didn't affect me as much as it could to you Sesshoumaru…"

"What is that smell?" Sesshoumaru asked raising his arm covering his nose with his sleeve.

"They call it pollution…" Kagome said softly. "They are smoke from transportation, factories and other unspeakable things. It's hard to explain…"

"Let's get into the house." Inuyasha said. "The smell isn't that bad when we are indoors…"

Kagome nodded and led Sesshoumaru and Inuyasha into her home, hoping that everything goes well and Sesshoumaru won't start killing her family when he sees them but with Inuyasha around, she knew that he wouldn't let Sesshoumaru do anything to her family.

"Jijiwei, Okasan, Selina…" Sakura whispered holding three joysticks in front of a wooden altar with three wooden name plates on it and a porcelain bowl filled with sand. "I will be leaving today… I'll come back as often as I can to give respect…"

She poked the joysticks into the porcelain bowl and bowed three times. After that she left the small chalet where other name plates of her ancestors placed in rows on wooden shelves against the wall. She walked out into the bright day light and took a deep breath. She could see her house that was burned to the ground at the corner of this small chalet for the black remains were still there and the only buildings left on her land was the shrine her mother look after and the judo hall her father took care of. She had been sleeping the judo hall the passed few days. Nothing had changed, there are times when the house keeper will still come to clean the place, though she never touch or move anything around.

She had seen the attorney that morning and he had given some funny looking old scrolls. Wondering why her father would keep such things to the attorney she went into the judo hall and sat on the floor unrolling the three scrolls given to her. It was old and worn, but the paper was thick and of good quality. There were ancient words written on one of them and weird picture of two maidens each on the other two scrolls as she tried to figure out what it said. She didn't ponder on it for long when the clock in the judo hall chimed twice and she knew that it was time to head for the airport to get back to Tokyo. She was looking forward on seeing Sesshoumaru and the others again.

She rolled back up the scrolls and thought maybe Ojiisan can be able to help her with it. Grabbed her hand luggage she left the hall.

"This is Sakura's room…" Kagome said leading Sesshoumaru to her room. She thanked God that her family wasn't home at the time. "If you want to stay here, I will leave you here alone… would you be fine alone?"

Sesshoumaru turned around and gave Kagome a strange look and she gulped backing out from the room.

"I'll be downstairs." She squeaked and shut the door quickly.

Sesshoumaru inhaled deeply in the room after Kagome left. This room was filled with Sakura's scent; it was really pleasing to his nose after his nose had suffered the putrid smell when he was outside of the house. The place was small, which consist of a funny looking rectangular thing which was soft and fluffy (It is the bed). A shelve filled with books, a very high table (desk) and funny looking chair with what looks like rollers at the bottom (office chair). There were some other doors in the room (closet) besides the one he had walked through with Kagome. He opened the doors and saw many odd looking kimono inside and shut it again.

A chime from her table made Sesshoumaru jumped knocking into the shelves and some books fell to the floor and they lay opened. The chime came from Sakura's small desk clock. He frowned at it with his head inclined slightly, he was about to crushed the thing when the opened books that lay on the floor caught his attention. Two among the books had pictures of Sakura in it. He bent over to pick it up, walking to the soft thing; he sat down and flipped through an album where he knew that it was her family. He recognized Sakura's younger sister. Rin had shown him the picture before. She looked really happy inside, some picture grinning broadly as she hugged her sister and some with her parents doing funny faces with her younger sister. He quirked his eyebrow; she still seemed like a little girl in the picture. With her long hair flowing down her back like black silk.

Why did she cut it? He wondered. She looked really beautiful.

After finished looking through at the first album he picked up the second one, which was full of pictures of her wearing that kimono he had first met her. There were many others around her wearing the same kimono too and he recalled something about what Sakura had told Rin about school.

So this is a school? Where everyone dressed the same. He thought as he look at the picture, some girls putting their arm around her shoulders and some boys trying to stand near her in the picture. He frowned; a deep surge of anger flowing through him as he wanted to ripe that picture into shreds but he held it in.

He turned the pages slowly studying Sakura's delicate figures from the time she had long hair until to the time she had cut her hair to her shoulders, the edges of her hair like steps as it becomes shorter going up to her fridge; the hair style she wore now. Sesshoumaru ran a figure on her face tracing her features slowly. How much he had missed that face…

Sakura climbed the long flight of steps to Higurashi Shrine tiredly dragging her hand luggage up with her slowly and the scrolls under one arm. When she reached the top Kagome ran out from the house quickly to greet her much to her surprised. She thought that Kagome had already gone back to the feudal era.

"Kagome," Sakura smiled. "Don't tell me you had waited for me all this time?"

"I don't know how to start this…" Kagome exclaimed. "Well, I did go back to…"

"Then why did you come back here?" Sakura smiled walking into the house. "I told you that I will meet you there when I get home…"

"Oh well, you see…" Kagome started following close behind.

"Inuyasha?" Sakura's eyes widened when she saw Inuyasha in the house sitting on the flight of steps as if guarding something. "What are you doing here?"

"Oh well," Inuyasha scoffed. "Why don't you go to your room and find out."

"Inuyasha!!!" Kagome protested.

However, Sakura tilt her head to a side and walked up the steps. Inuyasha got up and stood aside to let her through. She went to her room and opened the door quickly only to see Sesshoumaru sitting on her bed looking through her albums. Her eyes widened with surprised.

"Sesshoumaru-sama…" Sakura whispered dropping her luggage and scrolls as they fell to the floor next to her.

Sesshoumaru stood up slowly when he saw Sakura standing by the door. She was wearing an odd wooly top (sweater) funny looking blue pants (jeans) and black pair of shoes with strings tying at the front (sneakers). Before he could really take a good look at her captivating face, Sesshoumaru felt as if his air was all knocked out of his stomach when Sakura ran to him and flung her arms around his waist. He smiled softly down at her stroking her hair gently. That was not exactly the reaction he had expected from her.

"How are you?" Sesshoumaru asked softly still stroking her hair.

"Alright," Sakura answered looking up at him. "How are you? How's everyone?"

"They miss you, especially Rin." Sesshoumaru answered.

"Don't you miss me?" Sakura asked.

Sesshoumaru remained silent for a moment, and nod once. Sakura smiled and buried her face on his chest again.

Kagome and Inuyasha stood by the door their mouth hanging opened. They looked at one another and then back at them again. Slowly Kagome pulled the door and shut it softly.

*************************************************************** *********************

After closing the door the telephone rang and Kagome ran to pick it up.

"Moshi moshi… Higurashi residents," Kagome said.

"Kagome," Mrs. Higurashi said on the other side.

"Mama," Kagome cried.

"I thought that you already left!"

"I did, but…" Kagome paused for moment. "I came back to get Sakura."

"I call actually to tell Ojiisan; Souta and I won't be home tonight," Mrs. Higurashi explained. "Isn't he home?"

"Nope there was no one at home when I got back…" Kagome said.

"I guess he went over to play chess with friends and won't be home until tomorrow…" Mrs. Higurashi said then. "Ah well, be careful and remember to lock everything before you leave ok…"

"I'll remember mama…" Kagome said.

"Alright then, oyasumi…"

"Oyasumi," Kagome hang up slowly with a sighed. "Close shave, my whole family is away."

"Kagome is that aunty?" Sakura asked softly frightening Kagome in process. "She is not coming home tonight?"

"Sakura," Kagome looked at her and then behind her where Sesshoumaru stood not far away. "Yes, mama called to say that she and Souta won't be back until tomorrow morning."

"I see," Sakura said. "What about Ojiisan?"

"He is not in as well." Kagome inclined her head looking intently at Sakura. "Is something wrong?"

"No," Sakura mumbled looking away. "I just wanted to talk to Ojiisan about something that's all."

"We never had secrets," Kagome frowned putting her hand on her hips. "Is there something you are hiding from me?"

"Why don't you come with me?" Sakura said turning away. "Where is Inuyasha?"

"I'll go get him." Kagome ran off.

"I'll be in my room."

Sesshoumaru followed Sakura back to her room to wait for Kagome and Inuyasha. He watched her down cast look and wondered what was bothering her. However, he didn't ask when Sakura remained quiet. He will wait until she decided to speak for herself. Kagome and Inuyasha came shortly later.

"What is it?" Kagome asked looking at Sakura.

Without answering Kagome, Sakura took the scrolls down from the top of her shelve and put it on the floor unrolling all of them. They all knelt down to look at them while Sakura sat crossed leg staring at all of them.

"Have you seen anything like this before?" Sakura asked them.

"It is a lost ancient language almost five hundred years ago." Sesshoumaru replied as he studied the scrolls. "How did you get them?"

"My father left them for me…" Sakura said softly. "Do you know how to read them?"

"No, nobody knows how to read this writing for almost pass five hundred years." Sesshoumaru replied solemnly. "Those that could were wiped out."

"You mean no one was left?" Sakura whispered.

"Sakura," Kagome said. "This picture here…"

Kagome was studying two pictures on two different scrolls; one of them was a maiden with long red hair, with a golden head band and a cobra head protruding from the middle of the golden head band. She was wearing a sleek long black dress that reaches down to the floor and split on the left side of her leg going all the way up the waist showing of her long legs. Both her arms were coiled with each a life cobra snake and their tails encircled the maiden's waist. The scrolls were pretty old so the colours on the worn paper were pretty hard to tell. Though it was obvious this maiden had red hair and wearing a black sleeveless dress looked really dangerously beautiful and evil.

On the other scroll however, was of another maiden with long black hair streaked with slight gold and a golden peacocks' tail opened up like a fan behind the maiden's head attached to the back of her white Kimono and her Kimono was long which reached down to the floor like a train behind her back embroidered with golden and blue peacocks' feathers. She was really gorgeous and a smile which made her looked somewhat angelic.

Sakura paled slightly looking at the picture with white kimono. Now that she had really studied the pictures closely, the one with the maiden in white really disturbed her.

"What is wrong?" Sesshoumaru asked when he saw Sakura looked slightly pallid putting his hand on her shoulder.

"I had a dream about this maiden before…" Sakura whispered pointing to the maiden with a golden peacock tail fan behind her head.

"But where, how, when?" Inuyasha asked.

"You have seen these scrolls before?" Sesshoumaru asked softly.

Sakura shook her head. "This is the first time I had seen this scrolls… I dreamed about her when I was much younger, she told me something about me having to take responsibilities… I can't remember though… I was so young…"

"What does this mean?" Kagome asked slightly frightened.

Sesshoumaru remained silent watching Sakura as she continued to stare at the scrolls. He didn't understand it either. Nobody paid any attention to something that had extinct for so many years. All he knew that those who created this language had long died, and that's it. However, the silent of the room was interrupted when Sakura started speaking again her voice low as her eyes glow blue in colour.

"After a thousand years has pass, a maiden will be chosen. She will be born at the break of day in the mid year." Sakura spoke in a hush low voice translating the language as she read. Everyone looked at her aghast. "There are good and evil within her heart that she will have to abide with and take control of. The evil and cruelty of Great Cobra Demon is feared amongst the living. Known as the heartless among all beings, conversely, the Goddess of Phoenix held high with a good heart and kindness towards living creatures. Bless be to all as she will protect all and sundry. One will emerge and the other will vanish with the full moon and fate will befall on the result made."

After that Sakura slumped down on the parchment, as Sesshoumaru quickly pulled her back. She lay limply on his arm as Kagome crawl over to her side and looked down at her worriedly.

"Will she be ok?" She asked.

"Let her rest." Sesshoumaru said carrying her up and place her gently on her bed. "I'll be with her."

Kagome took the hint that Sesshoumaru want to be alone with her, so she got up and pulled Inuyasha out of the room with her and shut the door quietly. When he could hear them going down the stairs again he sat on her bed next to her and pulled her up as she lay on his chest. What has this prophecy got to do with his Sakura? He wondered looking at her angelic and innocent face. Hoping that whatever it was, it wouldn't hurt her.

It was perhaps midnight when Sakura opened her eyes again and found herself in an odd position. She blushed when she realized that her legs were entangled together with Sesshoumaru's; one of her legs between his and she lay face down on his chess her hands holding on to his waist and another his shoulder. She quickly pulled away but that was when she realized Sesshoumaru's arm was around her waist and the grip tightened not letting her move away.

"Going somewhere?" Sesshoumaru asked hoarsely.

"Actually I…" Sakura stammered softly. "Well, I never sleep like that with anyone before…"

Sesshoumaru smiled softly, to hear that. He never like the idea Sakura being with another. He will be the only that she will stay close with and no one else. Slowly he rubbed her back gently and nuzzled his nose in her hair.

"Sesshoumaru-sama?"

"Hmmm?" Was what Sesshoumaru answered as he continued to rub his nose on her hair towards her cheeks and down to the side of her neck.

With both her hands on his chest Sakura pushed up slightly to look at him. His eyes were gentle and warm and he stared back at her. Sakura inclined her head with a smile.

"I had a dream… it is the Goddess of Phoenix again…" Sakura said softly. "It had shown me why I have this strange powers, I knew nothing about."

Sesshoumaru quirked his eyebrows listening to her intently.

"Now, I finally understood…" Sakura smiled. "There is something I want to do for you."

Sesshoumaru raised his eyebrows slightly then.

"You will be please…" Sakura said smiling cheerfully. "Trust me, close your eyes. Don't open them until I tell you too."

Sesshoumaru shut his eyes then remaining silent. He could feel Sakura sitting laying on top of him then, wrapping both her arms around him as he felt her warm cheeks on the left curve of his neck. He wanted to open his eyes so much to look at her but she had told him to shut his eyes until she said he could open them. He felt very comfortable feeling her breath on his neck as every part of his body tickled, feeling very warm. He could feel his left shoulder burning suddenly and he had the urged to open his eyes then but he could feel Sakura's arms around his waist tightened.

"Almost there…." She whispered.

Sesshoumaru wondered what she was talking about opened his eyes slightly to see his whole body glowing blue in colour as if his body was attached to Sakura's, he frowned slightly thinking what she was doing to him when, the light faded and Sakura pushed up slightly. She looked up wearily and realized that Sesshoumaru had already opened his eyes and her slight disappointment flashed across her face.

"You were looking…" Sakura said softly and tiredly.

"I was wondering why my left shoulder was burning." Sesshoumaru retorted raising his left arm. "What were you doing?"

Sakura raised her eyebrows at his question and turned to look at his left arm. That was when Sesshoumaru realized that, his left arm had grown; he flexed his claws in front of his face in amazement. He was surprised when he realized that it was his original arm, with two red strips at the side of his wrists.

"What did you do?" Sesshoumaru whispered looking at his hands stunned.

"Give you back your arm…" Sakura replied with a weak smile. "Kagome told me how you lost it."

Sesshoumaru was speechless; he didn't know what to tell her. However before he could think of anything to say to her; Sakura slumped down on his chess sound asleep. Smiling down at the unconscious figure, he cuddled her closer to him using both arms this time.

"Arigatou…" Sesshoumaru whispered the word that that the Lord of The Western Lands had never said before to anyone.

He nuzzled his face on her hair again inhaling her scent deeply falling into a slumber himself.
