Chapter 5
While Kagome was running towards the well, Inuyasha was having an actual civilized conversation with Kaede.
“I don't know what to do. I wish there was a way to know how I felt about her.”
“I can't tell ye what to do or how to make such a decision,” the priestess said to the young man. “All I can say is to follow your heart.”
“Keh, easier said than done. I don't know what my heart wants.”
“Well, what do you want? Do ye wish to say with her? Do ye want to leave her? Do ye want my sister?”
“I don't know what I would do without her.”
“So she is important to ye?”
Inuyasha looked off blankly, “yeah. She's the most important person in my life.”
“Does she know that, have ye told her?”
Inuyasha pouted, he hated when he had to admit to something like that, “no.”
“Well then, how does she make thee feel?”
“Wanted, accepted, sometimes even…loved. I care for her.”
“Aye, but do ye care for her enough to give her what she desires?”
“What do you think she wants from me, Kaede?”
Lady Kaede heard Kagome's faint call and smiled, “why don't ye ask her yeself?”
Inuyasha popped his head outside the hut. Kagome stopped when she saw his dog-eared silver mane.
“I…came to tell you that the festival starts at dawn. I know the new moon is tonight.”
“Kagome, come here,” Inuyasha ordered. Kagome obeyed and soon found herself in his embrace. “I don't want what happened to change anything between us. I like being close to you.”
“But aren't we just…?” Kagome started.
“Friends? No, I don't think so. We're closer then just friends, but not lovers or a couple or anything.” `At least I don't think we are,' Inuyasha added to himself.
Kagome whimpered, Inuyasha looked down at the girl clutching to his chest. He smoothed her hair with his hand, running his fingers through it and admiring its silkiness. `Her hair is so soft,' he thought.
`It feels so good when he does that,' Kagome thought to herself. “Mmm.”
“Kagome? What do you want from me?”
“I don't know,” she answered honestly.
`She can't be,' Inuyasha thought in shock, `she can't be as confused as I am…can she?'
“All I want is for us to be happy, but I don't know what it would mean. What it would mean for you.”
Inuyasha squeezed her tight, “oh, Kagome, I don't now what to do.”
Kagome waited till he released his grip and looked into his eyes, “follow your heart.”
“That's what Kaede said.”
“Well she's right isn't she?”
“I hate it when you do that.”
“No you don't, you just don't like it when you know I'm right.”
“Maybe,” he mumbled.
Kagome giggled, “you're cute like that.”
“Like what?”
“Annoyed. You're ears go flat, it's so cute.”
“You're just cute.”
Kagome laughed, “when we met you said that Kikyo was a lot cuter.”
“That was before I got to know you.”
“And I said that I had a bad smell.”
“You know I lied and I thought you were Kikyo then.”
“Do you really like me, Inuyasha? Do you like the way I look and smell?”
The next thing Inuyasha did, he did very impulsively. He took her face in his hands and kissed her soundly. “You are beautiful and your scent is wonderful. I mean it, you're absolutely enchanting.”
Kagome smiled and kissed him on the cheek, “thank you, we should get going.”
They walked to the well and to Kagome's home in a comfortable silence.
