It's A Wonderful Life

Chapter 3

Inuyasha sat in the chair between the two beds doing his paperwork for the clinic. Shippo was on his bed asleep and Rin was on Kagome's asleep. He would have let them sleep in the same bed but he didn't know how Sesshomaru would handle seeing his daughter in bed with a little boy, even if they were both five. He looked up when the door knob began to turn.

"I see you have kept Rin alive today," was his brother's greeting.

"Keh."

"How did she behave?"

"Like a five year old little girl."

Sesshomaru nodded.

"Hey, about the tutor, Kagome hasn't given me her resume yet, but I'll have it for you tomorrow."

"That is fine, Jaken hasn't been able to find many suitable candidates so tell her that I still would like to see her resume, but to go ahead and put in notice at her other jobs. I expect her ready to work next week. In the mean time you will watch Rin in the day time, I assume that watching two small children won't be to much trouble?"

"Keh that's fine. Although one day I'd like to see you try to watch these two small children."

Sesshomaru didn't give an answer, he simply walked over to the bed, picked up his daughter, and carried her out of the room.

"Arrogant bastard." Inuyasha mumbled under breath. He looked down at his watch and noticed that it was almost time to go pick Kagome up from work. He got up and organized his paperwork before checking on Shippo and turning the lights out. He went to his office, put the papers away, grabbed his car keys, and went to pick Kagome up from work.

Miroku was awakened by the sound of his cell phone ringing next to his head. He groggily looked at the caller ID only to notice that it was Sango as well as realizing that it was two in the morning. He reached over and picked the phone up.

"Sango? Is everything okay?"

All he heard on the other end was sobs. "Sango?! Are you alright? Did something happen?"

"I had a bad dream." She said in broken sobs.

Miroku sighed in relief. "Is everything okay now?"

"I guess, but Kohaku's asleep and I need to talk to someone."

"Well I'm here."

"I know."

"What was the dream about?"

"My Dad."

"What about your Dad?"

"Look... I can't do this over the phone, could you come over?"

That got Miroku's attention, "Sure, if that's what you want."

He heard a sigh on the other end and then a very tired Sango said, "Yeah it's what I want."

"Okay then. I'll be over there in twenty minutes."

"Okay, see you then."

Sango laid back down in bed. It wasn't anything serious, just the same dream she'd been having since she father died. So, why did she call Miroku?

"Come on Sango. You know why you called Miroku, you're scared out of your mind and he makes you feel better. You want him here so he can tell you you aren't crazy." She said aloud to herself. She rolled over and snuggled into the blanket and waited for Miroku to get there.

She didn't have to wait long. Ten minutes later he was knocking on the door.

'He must have sped the whole way here,' She thought to herself. He was also only wearing a t-shirt and pair of plaid pajama pants. She moved to let him into her apartment.

"Have a seat." She said pointing to the sofa. He walked over and sat down.

"So, what's wrong?"

Sango sighed, she should have known that he wouldn't give her a chance to back out of it. She walked over and sat on the other side of the couch, she leaned her head back, and closed her eyes. She sat there for several minutes.

"Sango?" Miroku asked softly.

"I don't know why I asked you to come. You should just go home." she replied in broken tears. Miroku instantly moved to her and picked up her right hand, cupping it in between his two.

"Sango you asked me here for a reason."

"I know."

"Then what is it?"

She sighed and moved her left hand and wiped away the tears streaming down her face. "The dream."

"Okay. So the dream, what was it about?"

She closed her eyes again and leaned her head on Miroku's shoulder. "I don't know why I'm so worked up, I've been having the same dream since my Dad died."

"How often?"

"Once a week, maybe twice. I have it more often when I'm stressed."

"So, what happens in this dream?"

"I'm standing there over his hospital bed right before he dies and I'm straightening his blankets; you know trying to make him more comfortable. Then I tell him I love him and I kiss him on the forehead. Then he reaches up and wipes his forehead. He looks at me and says, 'Why the hell are you here?' and I look at him and I say, 'What do you mean? I'm your daughter.' He looks at me and he says, 'I mean I hate you! Get away from me.'"

"And you have this dream once a week?"

"Well sometimes the exact words change, but it's always something like that."

Miroku sat up and turned to look at her, "Oh Sango." He reached over and hugged her. She sat up enough for him to get his hands around her and moved her arms around him. She squeezed him to her so tightly that he could barely breathe, but he just sat and held her as she cried into his shoulder. He whispered in her ear the whole time that it would all be okay.

When her tears finally subsided she fell asleep, still leaning on him. He moved her back into the sofa and smoothed her hair. He looked around for a blanket and spotted one on the coffee table about two feet from him, but when he moved to get it Sango snuggled into his side. So he moved her just a little to the right, into him and reached out his left hand. Trying desperately not to wake her he grabbed a hold of the folded blanket by a string hanging out of it. He pulled on that one string and brought the blanket to him, it became unfolded as he dragged it and he brought it up to him and moved it over himself and Sango. He tightened his arm around her and leaned his head on hers and thought back to earlier that night, she had seemed so much happier when they were on their date...

Sango had taken him to a paintball facility. He'd never been before so she had been on his team and they played against a team of two teenagers. He wasn't proud to admit that Sango had to save him more than once.

Afterwards she had taken him to this little Italian restaurant down the street from the paintball facility. It had the best Chicken Marsala he had ever tasted. It was one of the best dates he'd been on in a long time, but the best part had been the goodnight kiss. It wasn't the first time they had kissed but it felt like it. He smiled to himself thinking about how wonderful it had been.

Checking to make sure she was still asleep he moved his hand down unto her bottom and rubbed a little, he smiled a little when it caused her to snuggle into him more. He smirked, sleeping with her like this was his dream come true.

Inuyasha pulled up in front of Kagome's work a few minutes before she came out. He was surprised when she came out angry. She stomped over to the car and roughly opened the door, threw herself in and slammed it closed. He watched as she threw her purse in the back seat, harshly buckled her seat belt, crossed her arms and said, "I don't wanna talk about it."

Inuyasha weighed his options: he could push her to tell him and possibly have her take her anger out on him or he could leave it alone and have her in a bad mood all night. At least if she started a fight with him her anger would be spent and they'd be able to have a good night.

"What happened?"

"I said I don't wanna talk about it."

"Come on Kagome," he pressed expecting her to start yelling. He was surprised when she looked over and said, "People are so stupid."

He laughed a little, "I coulda told ya that."

Kagome laughed a little, "I know I should have known."

"So what happened?"

"Nothing really. I'm just getting myself worked up over nothing, it's just…"

"It's just what?"

"This guy came in a few minutes ago and pressed every button I have."

"What'd he do?"

"Nothing really just said some stuff."

"What kinda stuff?" He pressed.

"Promise you won't get mad?" She asked in a small voice.

"You know I can't promise that."

"Please?"

"I'll try not to get too upset."

"He just said some stuff like 'You can give me a discount, you're too pretty for them to fire you. When do you get off? We can go get off together.' It got so bad that I had to call a manager over to escort him out."

Inuyasha was seeing red. "When did this happen and who is he?"

Kagome sunk down into her seat. "About an hour ago. He's just this guy that comes in sometimes."

"He's come in before?"

"A few times."

"Has he done this before?"

"Never this bad."

"You're going back in there and you're putting in your notice."

"But I need the money."

"No you don't Sesshomaru wants you to start tutoring Rin next week."

"But I can't just quit. It would be wrong to do that to them."

"So? Go give your notice, tell them you'll work the rest of the week but not to put you on the schedule anymore."

Kagome sighed, she wasn't getting out of this. He was right though, she already planned to quit anyway and this at least gave them a week's notice. She opened the door and got out of the car. Inuyasha followed suit.

"What are you doing?"

"I'm going with you."

"Why?"

"You think I'm letting you go in there by yourself?"

"Well your going to have to the rest of the week."

"Yeah, well, I'll worry about that later, for now you aren't going back in there alone."

"Inuyasha they already kicked him out he's not coming back tonight."

"I don't care."

Kagome groaned, "fine."

Inuyasha almost smirked at his victory, until he remembered the argument. "Keh, let's go." Inuyasha grabbed her hand walked into the grocery store.

They found the manager fairly easily and Kagome asked to speak with him.

"Of course Kagome, what did you need?" The middle aged balding man asked, not looking at them but rather at the bread display in front of him that he was putting together.

"I need to put in notice, I won't be working here after this week."

The man looked up at her quizzically, "this isn't about earlier is it? I told you that if he ever tried to come through your check lane again all you have to do is call up front and we'll take care of it."

"Well that's part of it, but I have another job offer that I've decided to take."

The manager sighed, "fine but understand that I won't be able to give you a good recommendation since you didn't give me a full two weeks notice."

"That's fine."

"Are you sure you don't want to go ahead and stay the extra week. Employers don't like to hire people that don't give two weeks notice, especially the kind of places you'll be able to find work."

Kagome's grip on Inuyasha's hand tightened and she felt the energy in him. She had to get him out of the grocery store soon or he was going to cause a scene. "That's fine. Come on Inuyasha lets go."

Inuyasha looked at her and then turned to the manager, "what does that mean?"

"I didn't mean anything by it," he replied in an indifferent manner.

"Inuyasha lets just leave," Kagome pleaded.

Inuyasha looked over to her and said, "no not yet I wanna know what he meant by that comment."

The man spoke up from beside the two of them, "look all I meant was that she barely graduated high school, she dropped out of nursing school, she's a single mom with a sick kid who's been in and out of the hospital. She's had to have a lot of sick days lately and who knows how many more she's going to have to have. That's all I meant."

"That's all you meant?" Inuyasha yelled, he moved Kagome behind him, "yeah she may be a single mom but you're going to penalize her for having a kid with a brain tumor! You are such a bastard!"

The man looked a little scared by the situation, "look I didn't mean anything by it okay?"

"Inuyasha let's just go. Please?"

"Keh, fine." He walked off out of the store.

Kagome followed, without turning around. By the time she got outside Inuyasha already had the car started. She walked over to the passenger side and climbed into the car. She was surprised however, when he didn't start driving. She looked over to him.

"You know, when I said I'd take care of you I meant it. Did you mean it when you said you'd let me?"

"Yeah I did."

"Then why didn't you let me defend you?"

"I did let you defend me, and by the way thank you for doing it."

"Kagome you barely let me defend you. How can you let bastards like him say things like that?"

Kagome looked down into her lap and said something that Inuyasha didn't hear. "What was that?"

She spoke a little, but kept her eyes on her lap, "I said that I let him say those things because everything he said was true."

"What?"

"Everything he said was true."

"You really believe what that piece of shit said about you?"

"Well it's true so of course I believe it."

Inuyasha growled, "I know that you have self confidence so stop acting like you don't."

"I do have self confidence, but I did barely graduate high school and I did drop out of nursing school. Plus I am a single mother and if it comes down to it I will have quite a few more sick days if Shippo needs me."

"Kagome that's not what I meant, you're acting like you think you're a failure. Do you really believe you're a failure?"

"Why do you ask that?"

"Cause you act like it."

Kagome sighed, "this just isn't where I saw my life when I planned it."

"What do you mean?"

"I mean I thought I was going to go to medical school and become a doctor, I thought I was going to graduate and start a practice and then get married and have children, in that order. And then…"

"And then what?" Inuyasha pressed.

"Life happened."

"What do you mean? Why didn't you go to medical school?"

Kagome leaned down and put her head on his shoulder. "I was dating this guy named Hojo back in high school and he asked me to marry him at graduation. I was so in love with him that I said yes. He had a five year plan that led to him going to medical school. He said that we had to make sacrifices and that we only had enough money for one of us to go at a time. He suggested that in the mean time I go to nursing school, because that was a better job for me anyways. I pretty much believed everything he said so I went along with it. Then about a year later, we were getting ready to move in together, I had already signed the lease but he hadn't, he said that he had found someone else. He stuck me with a five hundred dollars a month rent and utilities out of my ass. I ended up having to drop out of nursing school to pay my rent and I had to take an extra job at the restaurant. In the end even that wasn't enough so I had to get a roommate and Sango jumped at the chance. We went to high school together and had been best friends for a while and her Dad had just died, so she and her little brother moved in with me. That's when I met Kouga. We had only been dating for a few months when we found Shippo on the side of the road. Right after that he suggested that we move in together and I talked to Sango about it. I ended up moving in with Kouga and we adopted Shippo."

Inuyasha had been sitting quietly listening to her story. "So let me get this straight you didn't go to medical school because of what this guy said when you were a freshmen in college?"

"Well yeah. I know it isn't anything like me."

"You got that right," Inuyasha laughed and then a silence fell over the car. "Why didn't you tell me this before?"

"Because I don't like saying it."

"Kagome if I don't know things like this then I can't make them better."

"I know."

"Do you, really?"

"Of course I do."

"I don't think you do, if you did you would have told me this a long time ago."

"I wanted to."

"Then why didn't you?"

"I don't really know."

Inuyasha sighed and paused before speaking, "You do know you aren't a failure, right? Anyone who is as good of a mother as you are could never be a failure."

Kagome looked over to him with tears in her eyes, "Thanks."

"No problem." Inuyasha leaned down and kissed her temple. "Come lets get back to the hospital before Shippo wakes up."

Naraku sat in his chair and watched the television across from him, it was playing a very interesting live feed, of Sesshomaru's house, in particular Rin's bedroom. He smirked as Sesshomaru walked right past the camera with out looking into it, proving he hadn't noticed it's presence. Suddenly the phone rang and Naraku reached over to answer it. As he did the camera feed went black.

"What the hell do you want?" Naraku held the phone away from his ear.

"Sesshomaru, I was waiting to hear from you."

"How the hell did you do it? How did you get into my house?"

"Sesshomaru I haven't been inside of your house."

"You bastard I don't want you, or anyone you employ anywhere near my house or my daughter."

"Whatever you say Sesshomaru."
