Chapter Five:
The wind crashed against his ears as he soared from one building to the next. He had abandoned his car hours ago at Kikyo’s empty apartment building. He had gone there to prove to himself that she was indeed missing. When he had arrived the apartment was stripped bare nothing was left except for the walls, flooring, and the faint smell of bleach. He had started running from there for he did not have the patience to drive. He would scour every corner of the city if necessary.
He launched off another building, ‘please do not let it be to late,’ he prayed to anyone listening. He thought of the last time he had left her unprotected, when he had lost her. If he had been there to protect her she would not have died, and if she had not pushed him away this time he would be able to protect her. ‘Please do not let history repeat itself,’ he thought desperately.
‘Wasn’t it already repeating?’ The inner voice reminded, ‘where had that damn wolf come from?’ He hadn’t seen him in centuries and now he reappears at the same time a woman who reminded him so much of ‘her’ walks into his life, making him question everything he thought to be truth. ‘Kagome,’ she looked so much like her, her warm brown eyes her caring disposition, her smile. ‘She can’t be her,’ he rebuked himself ‘there can be no room for doubt.’ He resolved to himself. ‘If I doubt Kikyo, again, I could loose her for good.’
He had known Kikyo was the one the moment she walked into his office. It was like waking up again to see her face once more, to hear her speak, she was so much like her, except for her eyes, the eyes had changed they were some how harder, harsher. Her manner had change, as well, she was colder and had lost her compassion, but he knew it was his Kikyo returned to him after five centuries. ‘Kagome looks like her too,’ the inner voice reminded, ‘and she smells like you remember, and her smile is just the same.’
“NO!” he shouted to the wind.
‘I need to get a hold of myself Kikyo is in danger and I’m confused, that girl is not her, she is not Kikyo I wont let her die again.’
He sped up his pace he was entering a bad part of town, then he jumped to a near by derelict building. He caught her scent, and then he jumped down to the street below. It was near dark out now, it had taken him all day to find it but this had to be the place. He kicked down the door to the apartment building entrance.
“KIKYO!” he shouted,.
There was no reply, he flew up the stairs her scent was getting stronger, but there was something different about it, something chemical had changed it.
‘No,’ he thought ‘don’t let it be that.’ He ran even faster, he would be no more than a blur to the human eye at that speed. He reached the third floor of the building, and kick down the door to the room he knew she was in. A couple of thin scraggly looking men scuttled out of his way. His nose flared as his eyes darted around the room for her. Then he spotted her balled up in a corner, wearing the same clothes he had last seen her in, they were filthy and covered in dirt. Her long ebony hair was greasy and hung like dead vines around her shoulders. She raised sunken eyes to him she looked like she hadn’t slept in weeks.
“Kikyo you didn’t,” he said approaching her.
“GET AWAY FROM ME!” she screamed clutching her body as if she was in pain.
“Kikyo it’s me Inuyasha, I’m here to help you!” he said as calm as he could, he was furious, she was high it was plain to him. She been sober for nearly three years and she had thrown it all away.
“Get away,” she continued screaming.
“Kikyo, please.” he said reaching a hand to her, she batted it away.
He could smell the Meth in her blood, and she had a lethal amount in her system, and he had to get her to the hospital right away or she would die.
“Kikyo let me help you. You have a dangerous amount of Meth in your body you could die.”
“I want to die!” she shrieked.
“Why do you want to die Kikyo?” he said trying to move closer but she just shrank back further into the corner.
“Because my destiny is entwined with a freak,” she spat.
Her words cut deep, she’d never been the same since he told her he was a Hanyou, that night everything had changed, and he had to complete the hunt and change so that he could be what Kikyo wanted him to be.
“I’ll fix it I promise Kikyo but you need to live,” he said soothingly, she seemed to calm for a moment and he took his chance, he moved forward and lifted her up into his arms. She went limp for a moment, and he thought she had passed out, then she began thrashing in his arms, he held on tighter as she went into convulsions. ‘Oh shit!’
“Hold on Kikyo. I’m going to get you to the hospital.” he said running her out the door.
The hospital was less than a mile away, and he walked in carrying a now limp Kikyo in his arms, three male nurses had rushed forward with a stretcher and ushered her into the back room, and he tried to follow after but they stopped him. Another nurse led him away and had him fill out her admittance paperwork before allowing him to go see her. Once he had finished he went in to see her, when he entered the curtained area where he saw she was sleeping. She looked very peaceful, her eyes were closed and her chest rose and fell silently.
‘I’m so glad you’re alive,’ he thought watching her sleeping form.
He sat down next to her bed and took her hand in his, her eyes fluttered open softly.
“Inuyasha?” she said drowsily,
“Yes I’m here Kikyo, I’m here,” he said softly.
“Why did you save me? I don’t want to live anymore…,” she said quietly.
“Do I cause you that much pain with who I am, as soon as it’s complete everything will be better,” he cooed.
“It’s not you, I’m not meant for you Inuyasha, our souls are not meant for one another, I am darkness and you are light, you should get away before I swallow you in my selfishness,” her dark eyes regarded him with a softness he’d never seen in them before in this lifetime.
“Kikyo, I don’t know what you’re talking about I’ve waited five hundred years for you. I’m not going to let you go when I’ve finally found you once more,” he said desperately.
“Inuyasha, I’m not yours, this soul never was, this soul belongs to darkness, and hatred, if you don’t get away now you’ll be pulled under to hell with me.”
“You’re delirious you should rest,” he said caressing her brow.
‘Why does my heart agree with her, this is my Kikyo, it has to be her, she just sick… isn’t she?’
“Yes I want to rest,” she said rolling over to face away from Inuyasha.
“Go to sleep love,” he gently kissed her brow, and exited the room.
Kikyo had been sober three years and two weeks away from Inuyasha she had crumpled into a horrible shell of the Kikyo he knew. Even now, she was speaking gibberish about being dark, though she was his Kikyo. The centuries apart may have tainted her soul and the life she had lived before he met her in this lifetime had been a hard life. She had an abusive father who beat her, when she was fourteen years old she ran away from home, started living on the streets where she fell into drugs.
She had told Inuyasha once she would have done anything for Meth back then. She had lived like that for nearly five years. Then Kaede had found her again, got her sober, and gave her a place to live. She came to work for Inuyasha not long after that. He tried to heal the wounds of her past but she clung to them too tightly. It was all Inuyasha’s fault, for if he had been there all those years ago he would never of lost her and her soul wouldn’t have to wander through that kind of pain.
He would have shielded her through the centuries protecting her keeping her safe from harm. However that was not how fate had wanted it she had died five hundred years ago forcing him to search for her again only to slowly lose her once more. Inuyasha punched a brick wall next to him. ‘I’m going to kill the bastard that got her hooked again,’ he thought angrily. A thought that had been rolling around in his head since he had left the hospital came to the foreground. He could find the guy, but he would need help. Help from someone he hadn’t spoken to in decades, but knew he was in the city, his current persona was a professor, he pulled out his cell phone eyeing it suspiciously.
‘I have to call that bastard.’
He punched in the number and let it ring a few times, a man answered,
“Sesshomaru Takahashi speaking.”
“Hey it’s Inuyasha.”
“To what do I owe the displeasure?” Sesshomaru drawled.
“I need a favor can I come over?” He said gruffly.
“You do realize it is nearly two o clock in the morning correct?”
Inuyasha had no idea; time had lost meaning while searching for Kikyo,
“No, I didn’t but this is important Sesshomaru.”
“I can not entertain tonight, come to my office tomorrow after class we will speak then,” he said in a business like tone.
“Fine I’ll see you then,” he said abruptly.
He hung up the phone it was just like that bastard brother of his to keep him waiting, but for Kikyo he would wait, and once he found out who the bastard that gave her the drugs was he was going to kill him with his bare hands.
****************************************************** ***
The next afternoon he arrived too early, anxious to get his meeting with Sesshomaru over with. They’d never gotten along but some how they always seemed to be living within the same city. He remembered the first time he saw him in New York city right after he had immigrated to America from Japan, before World War One. He had just left the boat, and was walking on the dock he caught sight of a man with the same face as his brother with waist length black hair and no markings on his face. He hadn’t seen him in centuries but he knew it was him the moments their eyes met. When he moved forward to confront him, he disappeared into the crows. Fifty years later Inuyasha moved to Southern California, once more he had seen him this time looking much more like the Youkai he remembered. He had chosen a similar concealment as himself with white blonde hair, and he had left his eyes near natural, not the gold they were born with, but close enough as amber colored.
It was funny seeing him like that it almost made him long for home, but Inuyasha had decided long ago to make a new start in another country. He was sure her soul had traveled to this country and he was right, ‘I have found her haven’t I?’ A rush of students from the classroom entrance brought him back to reality, as they began to thin he moved forward only to be ran into, the smell that filled his nose completely made up for it however. ‘Summer flowers,’ he thought. He looked down and his vision was filled with ebony hair and warm brown eyes.
“I’m so sorry…Inuyasha?” Kagome said incredulously.
“Yeah,” he said grouchily, he couldn’t let her sweet scent distract him from his purpose here.
“What are you doing here?” she said sweetly, ‘her voice it’s so musical has it really only been one day since she slept in my arms?’
“I’m here to see my bastard brother,” he grouched, ‘keep your cool Inuyasha. Remember Kikyo.’
“Your brother?” she paused, looking deep in thought, as if she had come to some conclusion, “Professor Takahashi is your brother?”
“Half brother,” he corrected, ‘don’t connect me that closely with that bastard.’
“Oh, I can see the resemblance.” she smiled, ‘why does her smile warm my heart so?’
“I’d like to think I don’t look like that” a voice drawled.
“Shut up asshole,” Inuyasha replied.
“Well I guess I should be going,” Kagome chirped, she slipped away and Inuyasha was left staring at his least favorite person.
“Did you only come to throw insults? Do you think so little of my time?” Sesshomaru raised an eyebrow at him. ‘Bastard if I didn’t need his help I would run him through.’
“No I’m here for a favor,” he ground out.
“Well then fallow me to my office,” there was ghost of a smile on his lips. ‘He’s enjoying this, the bastard.’ He fallowed him down the classroom steps to an office at the back of the room. Sesshomaru sat down at his desk gesturing for Inuyasha to sit, but he kept standing this was going to be short if he could help it.
“What is it you need?” Sesshomaru said sounding a little impatient.
“A favor,” Inuyasha said dully, he hated asking this bastard for anything but he didn’t have the connections necessary to do this alone.
“So you said,” Sesshomaru drawled.
Inuyasha felt a tide of anger but tried to compose himself, “I know you have connections with the youkai community. I need someone to be tracked down.”
“And who might that be?” Sesshomaru asked in a bored tone,
“I don’t know the bastards name but he gave drugs to Kikyo… and I need him dead, this guy is like a ghost I’ve searched the entire city for him…”
Sesshomaru looked down at his hands, “You’re still looking for her?” he said quietly but there was a menace in his tone, a hint of pity. “You’re wasting your time on a reincarnation of a human who may or may not be the one you lost?”
“I don’t need you’re judgment Sesshomaru, I need this favor, not you’re lectures,” He said angrily, nearly shouting. Sesshomaru always looked down on his conviction to find Kikyo’s reincarnation that was one of the many reasons they no longer spoke.
“Fine,” he said standing to face Inuyasha; they glared into each other’s eyes. “We’re even now,” Sesshomaru said plainly.
“Good enough for me,” Inuyasha said before stomping out of his office, “As long as you find the guy.”
“Oh believe me we will,” Sesshomaru said darkly before Inuyasha was out of earshot.

Kagome plopped down in the seat next to Rin.
“Good Morning,” Kagome said cheerily.
Rin stared forward at the white board without reply.
“Rin you there?” Kagome said waving a hand in front of her face.
“Huh? Oh yeah,” She said distractedly.
“Everything alright? Do you have a case of the Mondays?”
“Yeah, I’m fine it’s just…”
“Everyone in your seats,” Professor Takahashi announced, cutting off Rin.
“We’ll talk later,” Kagome whispered behind her hand, Professor Takahashi glared but made no remark. ‘He must be in a good mood today,’ Kagome mused, normally he liked to embarrass people in front of the whole class for speaking out of turn.
The Professor started his lecture about the civil war and Kagome focused her energy on note taking. Class moved on as it usually did with a lecture then he ended the class with his typically huge load of homework. When class ended, Rin packed her bag then bolted for the door, ‘is she avoiding me?’ Kagome thought while chasing after her. When she reached the door she ran into something solid, she looked up to see white blond hair and a red t-shirt, at first she thought it was professor Takahashi, then she realized he only wore suits to class, she looked up at the face of the person she had run into.
“I’m so sorry…Inuyasha?” she said with disbelief.
“Yeah,” he said grouchily, she hadn’t seen him since yesterday morning when he had run out, saying something about Kikyo. She had hoped they would spend Sunday together too before he left.
“What are you doing here?” she said sweetly,
“I’m here to see my bastard brother,” he grouched.
“Your brother?” then it came to her she knew who her professor reminded her of it was Inuyasha, “Professor Takahashi is your brother?”
“Half brother,” he corrected,
“Oh, I can see the resemblance,” she smiled.
“I’d like to think I don’t look like that” a voice drawled behind her, she turned around to see Professor Takashi regarding the pair of them.
“Shut up asshole,” Inuyasha said.
“Well I guess I should be going” Kagome chirped.
Leaving the pair of them glaring at each other.
She ran out of the classroom hoping to find Rin but her run in with Inuyasha had delayed her to much, she was long gone. ‘I’m too late,’ she thought, ‘she must hate me for what happened on Saturday.’ She bemoaned her bad luck, and then she heard a familiar voice from behind her.
“Hello gorgeous,” she flipped around to see Kouga standing a few feet away.
“Hi Kouga,” ‘I almost forgot our date,’ she thought worriedly.
“Ready to go?” he said reaching a hand out for her.
“Yeah of course,” she said merrily, taking his hand as he led her back to his car. She had dressed a little nicer for school that day in case Kouga was taking her somewhere fancy but he had assured her it wouldn’t be anywhere fancy. Her mind raced with ideas as to where he was taking her. When they headed in the direction of the downtown area, she began her interrogation.
“So what’s my surprise?” she said happily.
“Can’t you be patient?” he teased.
“Nope,” she smiled.
“Well I’ll tell you part of the surprise since we are nearly there, I’m taking you to my condo and I’m making you dinner,”
“Really?” she said happily, “You cook?”
“Yeah I took some classes a few years back, cant always get take out you know?”
“I agree, what are you making me,” she prodded.
“Nope, that’s all you get for now,” he said sternly.
“You’re no fun!” she pretended to pout.
“Yes I am and you know it,” he teased.
They pulled into the underground parking lot to his condo a few minutes later, he parked in his assigned parking spot then ran to the other side to open Kagome’s door. She had learned a while ago there was no point in attempting to open her own door as he always got there quicker. Once they were out of the car, he wrapped his arm around her waist and led her to the buildings elevator. It was a good-sized elevator with glass mirrors etched with flowers and vines on the walls and chrome handles wrapping around, the floor was black marble with flecks of gold in it. ‘This is so fancy.’ She thought taking in all the details.
They reached Kouga’s floor and he led her to his front door, it was a large mahogany door with a black doorknob. The hallway in front of it had chocolate-colored hard wood floors. He fumbled with his keys for a moment before he swung open his door revealing a huge living room with a large window facing the park, and the same hardwood from the hallway was repeated in the living room. He had two modern looking brown couches with cream pillows; in the center of the living room was a black marble fireplace. The walls were a pale cream color and had renditions of famous art pieces adorning them. Kagome walked in at a loss for words.
“This is home,” Kouga, said smoothly, Kagome just let her eyes wander around the room. She walked over to the large window and looked down at the park below, she could see the place her and Kouga first met and farther past that were rows and rows of trees, she saw the small ambling path where Kouga ran every morning.
“This view is beautiful,” she said in awe.
“It’s the reason I bought this condo,” Kouga said standing next to her, “It reminds me of home.”
“It reminds you of Japan?” He had told her recently that he had emigrated from Japan.
“Yeah,” he said wistfully.
“I’d like to go there some day, grandpa talks about it all the time,” she said distractedly looking across the park.
“Maybe I’ll take you some day,” he said suavely.
“That be nice,” she said off handedly.
They watched the people bustle by on the street for a few more minutes before Kouga spoke.
“I’m going to start dinner why don’t you get comfortable,” he said motioning to the couch.
He strode away down a hallway to the left of the fireplace. She tore herself away from window to inspect the living room, the fireplace was burning merrily and right above it was mounted a flat screen television, the entire place was immaculately clean, ‘I wonder if he has a maid?’ she mused looking at some vases on a bookshelf. She walked around the room for a few minutes before feeling bored. The smell of food wafted in to her, ‘I’m going to go see what he’s doing,’ she thought. She padded down the hallway then turned into the wide-open kitchen; it had mahogany cabinets with cream-colored granite counter tops and a similar colored stone tile on the floor. Kouga was standing near the island cutting up some vegetables,
“You were supposed to wait in the living room,” he chided.
“I go bored!” she pouted.
“Fine, you can stay,” he smiled.
“How did you know I love grilled fish?” she said sitting on stool along the island.
“I’m just good like that,” he said grinning.
“What seasonings did you use?” she question trying to get a look at the cook top behind him.
“Little of this little of that,” he said casually, tossing the vegetables he was cutting into a pan,
“Smells like lemon and rosemary,” Kagome said knowledgably her mother had been teaching her to cook since she was ten years old and she had a good nose for seasonings.
“You have a pretty sharp nose,” he commented.
“Thanks,” she replied merrily.
When he was nearly done cooking, he ushered her back into the living room,
“Just sit here till I get you I want everything perfect,” he said excitedly.
“Alright,” she said plaintively.
He returned for her a few minutes later and led her into the dinning room; he had set the table for two and had lit two white taper candles. He pulled her chair out for her then sat at the end of the table next to her. He pulled a small remote out of his pocket and pressed a button the lights dimmed and soft instrumental music started playing.
“Kouga, this is wonderful,” she gushed.
“I’m glad you like it,” he said caressingly.
They ate in silence but Kagome could feel Kouga’s eyes on her, she smiled at him.
“It’s delicious,” she smiled.
“I’m glad you like it,” he said with a strange glint in his eyes.
She returned her attention back to her food trying to ignore the creeping sensation in her stomach.
When they finished eating Kouga led Kagome into the living room, setting her on the couch.
“Wait right here, I’m going to get your surprise,” he said, and then disappeared down the hallway. The sun was setting by now, filling the room with a soft orange glow.
Kouga returned a few moments later with his hands behind his back.
“What do you have there?” Kagome said coyly.
“You’ll see,” he said smoothly, coming to sit besides her, he left what he brought out behind his back and took Kagome’s hands in his and gazed into her eyes. “Kagome, I really like you. We’ve been seeing each other for nearly a month now and I think we should take our relationship to the next level.”
‘Is he asking me to sleep with him? Am I ready for this is he the one?’ Fear caught in her throat and she couldn’t form words.
He pulled a long rectangular box from behind his box and opened it; there was a silver charm bracelet in it with a single heart charm with a K engraved on it.
“Kagome I want you to be my girlfriend,” Several thoughts ran through her mind, ‘he wants to be exclusive, do I? What about Inuyasha? What about Inuyasha? He doesn’t see you as someone desirable, but it felt so right to be in his arms, it doesn’t feel wrong to be in Kouga’s arms, and he likes you he isn’t rejecting you, take the man who wants you. Should I?’
“Oh Kouga it’s beautiful,” she said sweetly.
“So what do you think will you be with me?” he said cautiously.
‘Yes, no, yes, no….’
“Yes,” she said sweetly; ‘forget about Inuyasha he doesn’t feel that way about you.’
“Let me put your bracelet on,” Kouga said huskily, he grabbed her wrist gently clasping the delicate silver around her wrist, when he had clasped her bracelet he kissed her upturned wrist, then he trailed gentle kisses up her arms to her collar bone. Where he gently nibbled and sucked, Kagome felt her desire rising like a slow tide. He moved up to her neck gently biting her, grazing her soft skin with his teeth. She couldn’t help the low moan that escaped her lips. She heard Kouga make a sound similar to a growl which seemed to intensify her arousal, she found her hands then and pulled Kouga to her lips, he opened her mouth greedily massaging her tongue with his, she pulled away biting his lower lip playfully. He sneered a little attacking her mouth once more greedily taking her mouth, twirling her tongue with his, Kagome moaned against his lips as he laid her down on couch their bodies pressed together, she unbound his hair and ran her hands through it. He caressed along her body gently feeling every curve of her back and shoulders until he met her mounds, he gently massaged her hardening nipples.
He moved down to her neck once more nibbling gently as he unbuttoned her blouse, exposing her bra to the air and Kagome felt a chill of desire across her body. Kouga began a trail of kisses down her neck and collarbone to the valley between her breasts. He hastily unclasped her bra freeing them to the air, and Kagome let out a gasp as he took her brown nipples into his mouth swirling his tongue around it, she felt her self buck up, before she could gain control of herself, having their hips meet, she could feel his erection against her pleasure spot. Kouga urgency seemed to rise as he switched to the second breast giving it equal attention as the first gently sucking on it and swirling his warm tongue around it, Kagome could feel his teeth graze it as he moved sliding kisses along her flat stomach licking at her small navel. He sucked at the juncture just above her pants make her desire increase she squirmed under his attention, trying to keep herself from bucking up to have her pleasure meet his awaiting mouth. He reached her pants and as he began fumbling with them, she seemed to come to a realization,‘No! I’m not ready,’ she thought desperately, she put her hands down on Kouga’s shoulders, he looked up at her eyes full of lust. ‘This isn’t right,’ she thought.
“Kouga I’m not ready,”
“Are you sure?” he said disappointment in his voice.
“No I’m not,” she said gathering her clothes and covering her exposed breasts, something about the whole situation seemed so wrong, this wasn’t how she imagined it, with white blond hair ran through her mind.
‘No not that,’ she thought, ‘I’m just not ready, one day I’ll be ready but not today.’
“I’m not sure, but I need to be positive I’m ready, so I don’t make the wrong decision. When I’m ready I’ll tell you. But Kouga, I know its not tonight.”
“Okay Kagome, let me take you home before I do something I regret,” he said sitting up on his knees.
‘Something he regrets. Can he not control himself? Did I just make the worse decision of my life getting serious with Kouga?’
The wind crashed against his ears as he soared from one building to the next. He had abandoned his car hours ago at Kikyo’s empty apartment building.
