Sango sat with her legs bent into her chest looking up at the velvet sky. The world around her was bathed in dark colors, as shadows had been cast over the land. Every thing from the blue of the sky, to the green of the grass on which she sat had turned a deeper shade.

A small noise escaped the mouth of her companion. The demon slayer turned her attention to the cream colored cat at her side.

"What is it Kirara?" She asked, as she stroked the top of the cat demons head. In turn, the small creature rubbed against the side of her thigh. The cat purred in doing so, begging for more attention. Sango smiled as she watched the cat demon so happy. To think that the fierce competitor that she was in battle could be reduced to a ball of fur with just the stroke of her hand.

Sango turned her attention back to her thoughts, getting lost, dazed, concerned.

They were going into the fourth day of Kagomes absence. Usually when InuYasha messes up, she will leave, but return. Some how, he always managed to get her to forgive him. Was it that she was weak? Or perhaps he was just overly strong? He could ward off any demon or human, and protect them from harm. So what other powers did he have? They must be strong for Kagome to always be the one to submit.

'Or maybe she's just in love.' Sango thought.

Love. It was such a strong word. It is strange how that simple four letter word can make a persons world and dreams come true. Then in the same instinct, it could break some one. It is able to shatter hope, ruin lives, crush hearts. It was strange to think about how many different thing that one word could mean.

She loved her brother, Kohaku. She wished for him to be safe, with her away from that terrible demon who was brainwashing him. He had done so much wrong... But in her heart, all she was able to do was forgive. He was the one and link that she had to her villaige, her family... Her father. Kohaku may have slain her father and all their villagers... But perhaps the Gods had a more important destiny for him. no matter what, her heart still wept for the loss of him, the loss of everything.

But through her losses... She also required her best friend... Her new family... Her unfulfilled love... All a different type of love.

She loved her friends. Kagome, her dearest of them all, she loved, and wanted only the best for. And by best, she meant nothing short if InuYasha. She is the best thing that has happened, and will ever happen to him. The stubborn fool... He was in love and to proud to admit it.

But then again, she knew that love also meant some thing else. It could hold your heart captive until it hurt so much that you thought it was slowly suffocating. It made you want to cry, break down and admit your weaknesses. But when you see the holder of your heart, your mind suddenly frees. Every thought floats away from you and all that matters is the current moment. Your heart flutters, and all your childish dreams come to mind.

When Sang thought about this type of love... She thought about Miroku.

How did he feel about her? Very often he showed interest in her body, and though she did find it vulgar, she couldn't help but feel proud that he was attracted at all. She often found the base of his true emotions at her rear end. Mirokus cheek would adorn the color of scarlet hours afterwards.

But Miroku was like that with all women. He was always the first to volunteer help if a beautiful women was involved, and the last if she was married.

InuYasha had apparently made it very clear early on that he was not to touch Kagome, according to Shippo at least. He had given his classic "Will you bare my children?" line, and InuYasha began to twitch with fury. InuYasha was very weary of Miroku from that point on. He was thankful when another female came into the group so Miroku could focus his attention- and his hands else where than on Kagome.

Sango had only seen the wrath of InuYasha toward Miroku once.

He had placed his idle hands on Kagome, as he sought her advice. InuYasha stood from behind them, and had seen the event. Miroku had gotten a slap from Kagome, but what InuYasha did was far worse. For the moment, he had glared daggers toward the monk. He gave a gulp of fear.

When InuYasha had thought that they were all asleep, he approached the monk.

His voice was low, angry, yet some how casual. Sango sat listening to the conversation.

"Keep you damn hands off of Kagome. Understand that monk?" His words were slow, bitter, and oddly cold.

Miroku nodded in reply.

"Good."

Nothing more was said about it, and Miroku had never touched Kagome inapropreatly again.

Why was it that she feels so strongly for that perverted monk? Strongly... It is love, isn't it? Of course it is. Only love can hurt this much.

He was a leacher. Every women was a target that crossed their path! If he kept up the way he is going... A women is going to be his undoing.

But that did not matter! What mattered is that she loves him!

'I... I love him...' She thought as a blush came to her face. She put her hand to her cheek, in an attempt to cover her scarlet tint to it. It felt hot against her palm as she felt herself smiling into it.

"Kagome!"

"InuYasha! Just listen to me for a minute!"

"No! Were going back TONIGHT and that's final!" The hanyou shouted at her.

InuYasha stood outside in the center of the yard, an even amount of distance between the sliding door to Kagomes house, and the Bone Eaters Well. He had her yellow back pack, almost empty in its contents, swung carelessly over his right shoulder. He stood looking at Kagome who was just a few feet from her house.

"InuYasha! Just one more day! Please?" She begged.

"You said you'd come back!"

"I did! But I forgot that I have a test, InuYasha please?" Her voice raised then lowered.

"No! What is it about these 'tests' that you like so much?"

"I have to take this one! Its a final!"

"A final? Last time you went home you had a final."

"Yes, but that was for Algebra. This one is for Biology. I need to take it or else-"

"Or else what?"

"Or else I wont pass for the year that's what!"

"What difference does it make? Your never here anyway's!" He argued.

"But I at least have to try when I am!"

"Why are these 'grades' so important Kagome?"

"Because if I don't do good, my life will amount to nothing!"

"Your not nothing! And books arn't able to prove that! What your doing back home is way more important! Every day Naraku grows stronger and because of you, your helping stop that!"

Kagome knew that what he was saying was right. Every word of it. Measuring out on a scale what would it be? Good grades, save the world, good grades, save the world? Some how save the world just seemed a little more important. But it did not matter now. They were in a heated argument. It was no longer Whats more important than the other- No it was 'I am right, and you are wrong'. she understood this fight all too well, and had no intention of losing it.

Souta stood with his grandfather at their transparent sliding doors, their eyes closed, not needing to see the fight to visualize it. The two just shook their heads as they stood in silence.

"I know that stupid! But my grades are important!"

"Kagome you just don't-"

"I have nothing packed and-" She said, before he could continue any longer.

"That doesn't matter we are-" He said playing back at her own game.

"Plus InuYasha, look around! Its night! What do you think were going to accomplish during the night?"

"Nothing! But we can head out early tomorrow!" He shouted back.

Kagome glared daggers at him as she narrowed her eyes. Sifting through her thoughts, she found some thing she knew he would not be able to deny.

"InuYasha, we haven't even eaten dinner yet."

The hanyou was silent, thinking about his options. He let his body weight sift from side to side.

"Listen, there is nothing but dirty clothes in that back pack. So why don't we spend the night here, I go to school tomorrow, and while I'm there, my mother can go shopping? After I come home from school, we can go home, okay?" She asked, her voice at a normal, bargaining state.

Kagome looked at him nervously, chewing on her lower lip, awaiting her answer.

InuYasha began to think about her proposal. What harm could one more day be? He looked up at Kagome who seemed to have taken a special interest in her bottom lip.

"Fine" He said, his voice narrow, eyes low. They looked up to hers as he finished. "But we are going back-"

InuYasha was unable to finish his sentence as he lost his breath as small arms wrapped around him with a series of "Thank yous!" coming from the victor of their argument.

The hanyous stomach was fluttering, and he had completely forgotten what had been so important as to why she held him so close. He inhaled her scent. It was so tender and inviting, silently telling him all the things he wanted to hear.

Kagome ran toward InuYasha with a dash of excitement. She had held her ground firmly, and won at that! How ever the feat seemed short lived as she rushed into his arms for gratitude. She could hear the steady beat of his heart as her ear was momentarily pressed against his chest. She surrendered for a brief moment to let herself enjoy it. The feel of her hands around his strong back, the texture of his red Fire Rat fabric, the nervous breathing pattern he had suddenly taken.

She managed to collect herself, and pull away from him. Looking up into his eyes, she smiled.

Neither of them had mentioned the kiss, brought it up. It was as if it had been but a dream. Kagome wanted more than anything to address the matter, but she was afraid he had changed his mind. What if he regretted it?

InuYashas every thought whirled around that one moment. That simple second in which he had been able to show Kagome he cared, with out the use of his words. And for that moment, he felt that she understood that. They understood one another.

When Kagome had broken away from the kiss, InuYasha instantly whimpered from the sudden loss of her. He was not ready to let the moment die. the hanyou was so sure it was just another one of his dreams. But this one felt so real, he just didn't want to go back into the reality of it all where he would be unable to hold as he was doing.

She had asked if he was ready to go home. His mental scales weighed each other out. If he went home, they would not have a moments peace together. But if they stayed here, Naraku had the chance to grow stronger. InuYasha felt that it would be too selfish to stay, just because he wanted Kagome alone for a while. Miroku and the others waited on their return and it was unfair to them. They needed to go back.

The man dressed in crimson now looked up at the women who had just won their argument. Kagome flashed him a brilliant smile, and he couldn't help the small smile that came from the corners of his mouth. She was contagious. When she was happy, she glowed with excitement, the those surrounding her couldn't help but be affected. During the times when she was mad, upset, sad, she did not suffer alone. Every one felt her pain. And when Kagome smiled, you couldn't help but return it. Even the most powerful of a demon could not help but submit to her. She was enviable.
The wind blew briskly, and Kagome began to shiver as her forest green sailor suit swayed in the wind. Grabbing InuYasha by his hand, she led him to the house.
"Come on." She said, her tone soft and kind.
InuYasha watched as the wind caressed Kagome. Before he knew it her hand held firmly on to his wrist as she lead him inside. InuYasha unconsciously smiled. He slide his hand from her own, and in doing so, entwined it so that their fingers met.
The walked back into the house hand laced with clawed hand.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The sun had set long ago as Miroku walked along the dusky path way, his shadow hiding from him. The ground seemed to have taken a rather grim tone to it.
The monk shot his dark eyes up to the ever clear moon. It was half way gone in its cycle. Soon, with in a months time, InuYasha would become human, his powers weaker, his senses dulled.
The night of the new moon was not something that the monk looked forward too. On such nights it became harder to hold in the hanyou's ever present sprit, when danger came near. And some how it always did when ever this time came.
Miroku stopped walking as he focus all his attention on the crystal orb planted in the sky. Its beauty shone down recklessly. There was such evil in this world, and some how... The Gods decided to reward them with something so majestic. In the horror filled battles that raged and the thousands slaughtered by demons and humans hands... They did not deserve such a wonderful thing to keep their nights company.
The stars hung over head as if were trying to over power the moon in their many numbers. As if a point were trying to be made. But the wise moon was still there, looking over them, mocking the stars.
Miroku heard a small noise from beyond the silent distance. He squinted his brown eyes and made out the figure of a women sitting alone on the hills.
She had a beautiful figure, and he could tell that her hands were covering her face. Was she crying? Hurt or in pain?
As the monk walked closer the form began to come together, and the women was not alone. A small cat rested near her thigh.
Miroku walked to Sangos side, and just looked out at the vast land before them. She was in a day dreaming state, lost in thoughts or memories. Either way, she had not taken notice of his presence.
"Some thing the matter dear Sango?"
"Huh?" She said, snapping back into reality.
The demon slayer saw a man dressed in purple robes standing at her sides. His expression was serious, but his words were soft. Was this reality? If so, why was he here? This had to be a dream... A fantasy...
"N-no... Nothing is the matter. Why do you ask?"
His eyes stayed fixed on the night before them.
"I saw you sitting out here, alone." He turned his eyes her way. "I wondered if every thing was okay."
An instant blush leapt to Sangos cheeks. She could fell the burn of them with each passing second he starred.
"Yes, everything is fine. I was just thinking."
"Really? Of what?" He asked, interested. "If you don't mind my asking." He added as an after thought.
She merely smiled and nodded her head.
"I- um..."
"Was it Kohaku that was troubling you?"
"Y-yes..." The demon slayer lied through her teeth. "I was thinking about Kohaku..."
"You mustn't give up hope, Sango. You must believe that you will find him, and he will be free of Narakus grasp."
She was taken aback by his kind words.
"Uh- Mhm." She said, with guilty eyes cast down ward.
Miroku still starred at her.
"Thank you." Sango said finally.
"Of course." He said as he stood up. "You are a dear friend. I will help you in any way I can."
Sango forced a smile to show her gratitude.
"Thank you." She said, her voice low. Her eyes glazed with tears, but none were meant for her brother. No, for once in her life, Sango was in pain, for herself.
Was that all he saw her as? A friend? Not a wife, not a mate... Not even an equal. After all the time they had spent... He saw her as nothing more.
Miroku had made it clear so many times that he desired her body. But that was a physical act. She desired the looks of the princesses that made him fall head over heels. But she could not have it. Miroku wanted a women to have his child... But he had yet to ask her.
"You are a dear friend..."
That's all she was, wasn't it? A friend.
Sango couldn't live with that.
Miroku looked into the glazed eyes of the demon slayer. The were flushed with unshed tears, and he knew the barrier would break any moment. He nodded his head in respect, then turned to leave.
"Y-Yes... I was thinking about Kohaku..."
As the monk began his walk back to Kaedas hut, the same thought kept replaying over and over in his mind again.
'Why did Sango lie to me?'
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Shippo sat in the warmth of Kaedas hut, beside the fire as it flickered up into the air. The shadows licked at the walls, crawling up to meet the ceiling, giving off a powerful ray of light to the other wise dim world.

As the kitsune laid on his stomach, crayon in hand, he began to color the out line of a tree. He moved the brown up and down, in wonder of the wonderful color. No one had ever seen the color of the great magnolia tree of paper. Shippo loved to show off his work to the envious children and confused elders. Every one complemented him in his capable work. But it did not matter if he lacked the skill. He had colors, and that made it beautiful.

The old miko was steadied next to a pot careful boiling over the fire. She reached out her tired hands and began to stir the concoction as the water began to make bubbles and pop up into the air.

Shippo looked up at Kaeda and smiled. Noticing his eyes upon her, she did the same.
"What are you making Kaeda?"

"Tis a antidote for the cold. It has been plaguing many villagers as of late."

"Really? Who has gotten sick?"

The stocky miko carefully dropped in leaves into the pot, then looked up with a smile.

"Ye should not worry Shippo. It is just the weather. The epidemic shall be over soon."

Shippo looked serious for a moment, then nodded his head.

"Mmhmm."

The kitsune returned to his coloring for a brief moment as he drew green leaves at the top of the page where the brown had left off.

"Kaeda, when do you think Kagome will be home?"

The miko laughed. It was a kind, but a tired one.

"When ever InuYasha has apologize enough."

"He really is an idiot. Running off to Kikyo like that, when Kagome is right here-" His crayon broke in his hand thinking about how hurt Kagome had been. She was lost and confused. All InuYasha did was hurt her...

Shippo stopped his angered words short. He had almost forgotten Kikyo was Kaedas sister. He was glad he was able to control himself before he hurt Kaeda more.

Kaedas smile grew to a deep frown. She knew that her sister had changed, for the worse. She was cold, and uncaring. She seemed to do more damage than good. Where had her sister gone that was once so kind, and loving. The one who had taken in a paralyzed bandit, because she pitied him. Kaeda had learned how to care from her sister, among other quality's. She held her sisters memory too close to her heart. Her kind soul could not have completely left her. Kaeda believed that some where deep down, she still inhabited it.

Kagome looked like Kikyo. But that did not mean that they were the same. No, they were so different, just as night and day, summer and winter.

It was true the both were beautiful, kind and in love with InuYasha, although she doubted the depth of her sisters affections.

But that was it. The only common connection that they had was the black of their hair, and the ability of their arrows. Kagome was a natural, she would be as good as her departed sister, if the proper training had been installed.

The old miko looked at Shippo who seemed to have grown quite which he meant as his silent apology.

"My sister has changed. She was not always so." She said finally. "Ye must remember her past." Kaeda added, as an after thought which seemed more to herself than to Shippo.

The kitsune looked at her, serious eyes upon serious eyes, then nodded.

"Mmhmm."

Shippo, with a new quietness to his voice asked a question that his heart flinched at.

"Do you think Kagome is going to come home?"

"I don't know Shippo, nothing is ever for certain."

The unsure words left him unsettled. Kagome was the glue that held them all together. Miroku was in their group because of Kagomes persistence. Sango stayed because of her warmth and care. He was here because of Kagomes input.

He remembered that day so well. It was the days that changed his life.

He had lost everything in world, only to gain it all back again,,, But in a new way...

When he was accepted into their group he already had the gist of how things were going to work between the hanyou and the miko. They were obviously in love, both unwanting to admit. Their feelings far too much in denial to be revealed. They played the same game of pretending not to care.

When his fathers fox fire had saved them, Myoga had said they came to bid their fair wells. The look on InuYashas face was one that could make a heart bleed. After words, when he knew all was safe, he returned to his stoney figure when it came to matters of the heart.

And that was almost three years go... Not much had changed.

'I doubt it ever will. The idiot. One day he is going to really hurt Kagome, and she isn't going to come back...'

He prayed that the day had not already come.
