Chapter 6: Doubt

"Se-Sesshoumaru."
the first time in eleven years, Rin laid eyes on her lord.
hadn't changed much. He still had opalescent hair, golden eyes, pale skin and demonic markings. The only thing Rin could see that had changed was his face.
wasn't cold or serious or even stoic. It was doubtful, intense and angry.
she was right before. Maybe Sesshoumaru had taken mate, and now he was angry that she came back.
this was again interrupted by his unnaturally grating voice.

"Your not Rin."
Sesshoumaru ^
woman that that stood in front of him was not Rin.
he had closed in on what seemed to be Rin, the scent had mysteriously vanished. It didn't move or anything like that, it simply vanished.
touched ground where Rin was supposed to be, and she wasn't there. Perhaps someone was playing a trick on him, toying with his sanity.
Sesshoumaru did not make mistakes. Ever.
was here, she just disappeared. Faint traces of her scent was in a direct path, so she must have been moving. Someone was trying to control him.
of course, would not work. He was Sesshoumaru, Lord of the Western Lands. No one could fool him.
could be also why Jaken could not find her. If he moved to close to her, than whoever did this, would move her, hoping they'd follow.
Sesshoumaru did not fall for traps or schemes, he didn't get caught or was attacked off-guard. That never happened to the Lord of the West.
Sesshoumaru jumped back into the sky and headed for the Palace. He would conduct a search, for whoever had been so bold to think that Sesshoumaru would be tricked so easily. And when he found him, he would find Rin.
that thought in his mind he approached the Palace at top speed.
he smelt her. This time, it was strong, like she had been in more places than one. But coming strongest, was from the hedge labyrinth, dead with the winter. He touched ground where he raced to find her before she vanished.
that led him here. The woman who was not Rin stood there looking at him dumbly.
did smell like Rin. But she lacked many things, in her scent alone. It was holy, like a miko's. Rin was not a miko. It was tainted with the smell of one who killed. Rin never killed anything. And it was older .
Sesshoumaru's best guess, Rin was nine. The woman who was not Rin wasn't nine she was more nineteen .
woman who was not Rin wasn't pure. Rin was the essence of innocence and purity. Rin didn't kill or murder, she didn't have the heart.
woman who was not Rin was a warrior of dome sorts. She held a sword, and was equipped with strange armor. Rin was not a warrior. And this woman who was not Rin was a miko. Not just a human born with semi-holy powers. She was a miko. Rin wasn't.
this woman was not too old, too holy, and too tainted to be Rin was going to die.
forward Sesshoumaru grasped her throat and lifted her to level his head. "You are not Rin. And will die." He tightened his vice grip and attempted to squeeze the life out of her.
woman only looked confused and extremely distressed. There was no pain nor fear in her voice when she spoke either; "I am Rin."
further tightened his grip. "You are not!" he growled venomously.
watched at her face in pleasure as it began to contort in pain, turning a dark red, with purple veins showing though her forehead. Her breathing was coming out in incoherent sounds, dry and raspy.
didn't notice when her hand shakily reached into a pouch that was connected to a string slung over her shoulder. She unclasped it and took out something.
woman brought it in front of Sesshoumaru's face and held it there.
abruptly dropped her.

"Who are you?"

^Rin^
couldn't believe her didn't think that she was Rin. Sure, she had aged eleven years, but her scent and her face couldn't have changed drastically.
Sesshoumaru told him with his own lips that he didn't believe that she could be Rin.
could think of a only one thing that would make him recognize her with.
it did something, because he dropped her.

"Who are you?"
her lord disbelieved her. She was Rin. She always had been. Why couldn't he tell?

"I am Rin, Sesshoumaru-sama. Please believe me. I'm Rin."
snapped out of his momentary confusion and stared at her coldly. "You are not."
turned away from her and began to walk away.
Rin could stand and keep him from leaving he stopped and turned his head slightly to look back at her.

"But you will be staying. I will find out who you are."
didn't ask, he didn't need to. Rin would have stayed anyway. She was sure it was only a minor setback that he didn't know exactly who she was. She would make him remember, if she make her lord do anything.
the comb he had given to her had some effect. Placing it back in her pocket, Rin stood.
led, and as always, she followed.

^One week later, at Sesshoumaru's Palace, Sesshoumaru^

He had tried to find out who she was, he tried harder than he let on.
matter how he looked at things the woman resembled Rin In many ways, not just in appearance.
had taking a great liking to her, the first one since Rin herself. Jaken, though, did not believe so surely that she was Rin, and he repeatedly told her so. In fact, if they talked at all, it was Jaken arguing that she could not possibly be Rin, and that woman arguing back that she was. That was certainly very much like Rin.
seemed just as cheerful as Rin was, and just as lively. Someone who did not know Rin as well as Sesshoumaru did one could easily mistake her to be just as pure and innocent as before. But slight changes in her expression, eyes and scent proved otherwise.
also resembled Rin in an older fashion. Her face shape was the same as Rin, heart-shaped, but slightly narrower with age. Her eyes could have been like Rin's but they seemed more lackluster than his Rin's. Her hair was just as bright and healthy, the same black that Rin's had. She could have been Rin, almost, if it had not been her age.
all these things that so resembled Rin and many more, Sesshoumaru outright refused to believe that she was Rin. If she was Rin she would be a little girl.
was only one thing that kept him from killing her then, and kept him from killing her now. That comb. He had given that to Rin, and he knew that there was no other like it. He had made sure. The only possible way she could have it was if she had killed Rin and found such an expensive decoration on her that she kept it.
perhaps she was Rin. Could she be Rin?
had to find out.

To be Continued
