Chapter V: The Lie in Which I Love-Part Two

“I can't imagine it'd be that bad, right? A date?” Sango picked at the cafeteria food absent-mindedly, trying to pry information out of Kagome. The girl still just stared deadpan at her peantut butter and jelly sandwich, not bothering to respond, too busy appearing as if she were trying to decide whether or not she wanted to eat the damn thing.

Like it was the most crucial and life altering experience of her current existence. Considering the lack of Kagome's social interactions, Sango was hard pressed not to think that perhaps that was such the case.

Sango gave her a dull look and pointed at the thing with her chopsticks.

“And that sandwich isn't going anywhere if you don't eat it.”

Kagome just shrugged, so slight it was nearly imperceptible.

At least she's answering… that IS progress… I guess.

Sango sighed, and shoved a piece of noodle in her mouth.

“Anyway, why would it be so bad? Hell, I was surprised you even got asked out. Why not give this guy… what's his name?” Sango realized that even though she had caught this bit of gossip, she never found out this guy's name.

What if she's so shy cause it's not actually a guy...?

The sudden thought caused Sango to choke slightly. What if Kagome did swing that way? Was she being rude without knowing it by assuming stuff she shouldn't have assumed about Kagome's romantic life?

Then again, was it so weird to assume something when the girl hardly gave her anything to go on about the things that related to Kagome? Of course Sango had to fill in the blanks somehow...

Though Sango wasn't prepared for the nasty glower Kagome sent her way when she said she was surprised the date happened at all.

Sango dropped her utensils, not used to receiving dirty looks from the girl. Something new, Kagome can be surprisingly intimidating when she wants to be. She defensively held up her hands up, implying a truce between them. “I didn't mean it that way! C'mon, you got to admit though. It is a little weird, isn't it? Ninety percent of the school doesn't even realize you exist, and you're the only one you can blame Kagome.”

Kagome flinched at the words that rang all too true, feeling as she had been smacked.

She knew that Sango didn't mean to hurt her… Sango was the kind of girl that spoke the truth without really thinking sometimes. Kagome liked that about her, no matter what that truth pertained to.

Kagome herself lived in lies all too well.

And as far as she was concerned, it was going to stay that way.

Kagome sighed softly, looking back down at her sandwich. She forced down another bite, trying to choke down the venom she wanted to spit out in retaliation to Sango's nosiness.

When had Sango become so obsessive over her life, anyway?

“You don't even know this guy's name, do you?”

Kagome frowned up at Sango in disbelief, wishing the girl would just drop the subject. It was something she did not want to talk about… but even though she didn't, she found herself responding despite the fact just to prove she wasn't that ignorant. Another one of her overly teenage ailments-diahrrea of the mouth.

“Of course I do…”

It was spoken softly, almost unnoticeably. Sango's reaction immediately made her regret opening her mouth.

At the admission, Sango got flustered and overly excited, “What's his name then?! You've got to tell me, you can't leave me hanging! Please, Kagome?”

Kagome blinked at Sango's barely restrained enthusiasm over the entire matter… Even then, a thought occurred to her.

I never told Sango my name… where did she learn it?

Kagome could barely keep track of anything anyway, so she shrugged it off despite her slight paranoia over the matter.

Looking around slowly as if it were valuable information that only Sango were privy to, which was technically quite true since Sango was the only person she spoke to, she lowered her voice a notch further. Sango had to lean all the way over the table to hear her, “… Inuyasha Taisho.”

Sango gasped audibly, just about shouting, “Say WHAT? He asked you out?!” Kagome slapped a hand over Sango's mouth, thoroughly embarrassed by her outburst as she hissed at her, “Not so loud, I don't think they heard you all the way in America do you?!”

Sango gushed anyway, speaking through Kagome's fingers, even though it was quite muffled. “Tat dudn't mattur, `gome! `e's sou hot I cud eet `im op.”

Kagome looked puzzled, removing her hand so Sango could repeat herself. “It doesn't matter! He's so fucking fine I could eat him!” Kagome stared slightly, a faint blush painting her cheeks as she leaned away from Sango and crossed her arms uncomfortanly, averting her gaze from the girl.

“What?”

Kagome just sighed, shaking her head in the negative, "...it's nothing."

She let Sango continue on her excited spiel, and just pretended she was listening.

~~~*~~~
Inuyasha Taisho, huh...?
Kagome sighed, staring up at the ceiling from the couch. She curled up under the blanket, tears stinging the edges of her eyes. Memories roiled over her, crashing into her as she tried valiantly to shut them out.
It wasn't working.
Though the `rumor' was that he had asked her out, the real reason he had was a completely different story. They were going to keep the meeting secret, but Inuyasha's jealous ex, Kimiko, had spotted them and eavesdropped on only half of the conversation.
Lucky for them, the unimportant half.
Since apparently the bitch can't keep her goddamn mouth shut… Kagome thought bitterly, turning over on her side to into the den of the living room, the humming of eletricity filling the space.
She huffed angrily.
Kagome couldn't decide… if real life was more bullshit, or the `dreams' she had.
In fact, that was why Inuyasha searched her out.
He was starting to have them too.
“Kagome…” Inuyasha had cornered her in the hall. Usually she was good at avoiding him, especially since middle school they hadn't talked at all, and it was because of her. She had driven him away, and he allowed her to. Since he knew exactly why.
But as expected, he took the punishment she handed out to him so he wouldn't feel quite as bad about leaving her if he did. She had done it, treated him so coldly for that very reason... Taking their 'unbreakable' friendship and stepping all over it as if it were only a cockroach waiting to be squashed.
Part of her resented him for leaving her, part of her was happy he wouldn't have to face these problems because of her anymore.
She brushed the thoughts away, trying to stop the slowly rising emotions he stirred within her, slipping on an icy mask as she glared at him.
“What?” she hadn't meant to snap at him entirely, but she did. Cruelty had become routine in dealing with him, and as if he expected it, he did not even flinch at her tone. He just continued on as if she didn't sound the way she did, as if her tone were kind and even, and they were old chums talking about sports.
“Kagome, it's started for me again.”
He didn't even have to explain. She understood fully.
“…when?”
“…the last new moon.”
She stared in to those violet eyes, and she couldn't help but be reminded of those golden ones that haunted her dreams… they were familiar in a way she couldn't really have placed until now, now that Inuyasha had matured and she finally had looked him dead in the eye after almost three years. For all the times they had passed each other in the halls, during classes, they had avoided one another's gaze.
But now... she shifted uncomfortably under his gaze, trying to hold the eye contact with him for longer than a few seconds.
It was harder than she imagined it would be.
She swallowed.
“…do you mind if I pick you up sometime so we can talk…?”
Kagome just nodded dumbly, finding her mouth too dry to speak.
And after she had gotten his phone number, she watched numbly as he walked away from her.
She wasn't sure if she wanted to scream, or cry, or both… but it was so hard to turn around and walk the opposite way from him.
Kagome sniffed, and flipped back over on to her other side, facing the back of the couch. She gasped softly as suddenly she was pulled forward, gently, into a warm embrace. Invisible hands moved her shirt up a fraction, and slipped inside the back of it to caress her back so softly.
A face nuzzled her neck softly, and she knew by the aura who it was. It was the dog demon in her dreams, with the golden eyes and silver hair that touched her so gently. The aura that was so tangibly familiar, as if she had met him in physical form before, though she knew it was impossible...
She moved closer unconsciously, enjoying the feeling of warm breath against her shoulder. She sighed contently, and though she tried her best not to, she felt herself drifting off in to sleep.
And though this secret of hers was surrounded by a web full of lies, she would not have taken it away for the simplest fact that the invisible love of her life would never have been able to touch her in the first place if she ever did.
The boy with the golden eyes that visited her in her dreams...
