Chapter XXII: And Now the Curtain Falls
All Kagome could hear in was the sound of her own heart beating rapidly in her ears, and the sound of her feet hitting the pavement.
…It felt like everything in her life had completely fallen apart….
And she was running from it all… she couldn't keep it with her. She had to shed it all, throw it all away. It was too painful…
“KAGOME! WAIT!”
I'm sorry, Inuyasha…
She didn't know why he was even bothering to come after her… why he wanted to stay with her…
She was so weak. She was so helpless…
She was so selfish…
I'm so stupid…
“Kagome, please! WAIT!”
I'm so sorry…
Kagome couldn't stop running. She just couldn't. She had to run away from the past that was quickly catching up with her…
~~~*~~~
Inuyasha skidded harshly, nearly falling over as Kagome cut around a corner unexpectedly, into an alleyway. She was drunk… it was dangerous for her to be out alone in the middle of the night. He had to catch her…
Despite the fact she won't stop for me…
“KAGOME! PLEASE! STOP!” he called after her. But shouting was doing no use… and in spite of the fact she was nothing but a drunken mess, she ran quickly as if her life depended on it…
And it hurt… that she might be running from him. That she wouldn't stop for him…
That the person he loved the most was hurting and there was nothing he could do about it.
He had to get her to stop. He had to get her to listen to him.
So, he took a drastic chance… if he missed, he very well might loose his chance to catch her. One way or another, one of them had to give, and he was determined that it wouldn't be him.
So, he lunged at her from behind. He tackled her to the ground, pressing his body weight on top of her to keep her pinned.
“LET ME GO!” she screeched at him, flailing and fighting against his hold. But he wouldn't budge.
“Hell fucking no! Not until you fucking talk to me, you fucking idiot!” he yelled right back at her, not willing to back down.
She tried to throw him off, but he straddled her back, pushing her face into the ground. He felt like shit for restraining her like that, but he had to get her to calm down.
“GET OFF ME!”
“CALM THE FUCK DOWN! Someone's going to think I'm fucking raping you or something, you stupid idiot! Stop yelling!”
That got her to shut up.
But she didn't stop struggling.
“Now, what the fuck is your problem?! Why the fuck are you running like this?!” Inuyasha whispered harshly to her, leaning over a bit. His hair curtained his face, and he watched as her sapphire eyes scrutinized him. But now wasn't a time to be analytical. Now was a time to put everything on the table and just fucking deal with it.
“I don't want to talk about this! Now get off of me!” she snarled back at him, and he looked somewhat taken aback. She had never been so vicious with him before.
“No! I'm not getting off until we talk about this, I told you that!”
“I refuse to talk about it!”
“You're being fucking idiotic! Stop being such a fucking bitch!”
Kagome's jaw snapped shut. She wasn't going to give in. She wasn't going to surrender to him.
And she wanted it to go her way… and that was that.
“Get…off…of …me…” she threw him a venomous glare over her shoulder, unable to lift her head because he still held her down.
“No,” he growled at her, staring at her vehemently. He was furious. She was being completely fucking unreasonable.
“I said…get.off.of.ME!” she shouted at him. He was about to yell right back again, until he felt a burning beneath him.
…oh shit…
A large amount of power threw him off of her into a wall, but sent her crashing as well into the opposite wall head first. A large cracking sound came when her skull made impact, and she landed on the ground with a dull thud.
His own energy had saved him from such an impact by throwing up a sort of barrier at the last moment, but he still felt pain all along his back. His hands were literally smoking from where they had touched her flesh, and he hissed quietly from the throbbing he felt.
This night is starting to fucking suck. She's got a huge 'I fucking told you so' coming her way...
Slowly, he slid his way up the wall, attempting to stand… But a wave of nausea sent him spiraling back to the ground. Growling to himself, he heaved himself up… now was not the time to allow weakness to get to him.
He had to get Kagome home... and then he could bitch about it all he wanted…
Crawling over to her prone form, he slowly rolled her over so he could see her front side better…
She was out cold… Blood crept down her face, and he cursed loudly.
Correction. Tonight didn't just fucking suck.
Tonight was hell.
Carefully, he lifted her up into his arms bridal style, and began the long and dizzying trek back to his car.
When she woke up, they were going to have a serious conversation.
But for now, he had to get her home…
~~~*~~~
Kagome was tired of him calling her weak. Comparing her to that girl she didn't even know. Sure, she couldn't shoot a bow and arrow like this `Kikyou' person could… Well, hell, she hadn't shot an arrow in her entire life, let alone picked one up! This was ridiculous!
And now it was her fault that the stupid bird had the Shikon no Tama? And now everyone wanted her to do something? What?
What should she do?
It rejuvenates…
Kagome blinked, and looked down at the foot that had been cut off. It wanted to rejoin with its body… so…
If I shoot an arrow with it…
Kagome's eyes went wide at the thought, and she immediately raced to pick up the foot and tie it to her arrow.
Of course!
It made sense, right?
I can only hope it works…
Kagome lifted the arrow high into the air, taking aim at the bird that had swallowed the jewel.
I never asked for this…
Kagome pulled.
I guess I have no choice about it…
“Hit the mark!”
But still, it's my responsibility, right?
She released, allowed the arrow to fly.
It seemed as if then, everything went still… as if right then, her life was about to change drastically. For better or worse, she didn't know.
But as the bird was purified, and the arrow hit the jewel… something life-altering happened then.
A bright pink light engulfed the sky, and a shower of that what seemed to be hundreds of falling stars rained down from the sky, shooting in every direction. What had happened…?
“…you stupid girl… What did you do?!”
Kagome turned her head to look at an outraged hanyou…
What did I do…?
Kagome couldn't move… she was in a daze, and felt trapped… something inside her was thrumming, begging for escape… but she did all she could to hold onto it, it was so important, so important and she was so insignificant compared to it and it was everything that made her and who she was…
Kikyou…
It was released, the moment that name spread through her soul like a knife, cutting the binds that held it inside her body.
In that moment, she was dying…
“You must get it back…”
Kagome lifted her eyes to those brown ones… the deep ones filled with such loneliness, such sorrow that it struck her through to the core.
“Kik…you…?”
The woman nodded slowly, reaching down to touch her face with her fingertips...
“You're its protector… You must get it back…”
Kagome nodded slowly, her eyes closing as she whispered to the woman, “Shikon no Tama…”
And once again, Kagome fell back into darkness.
