Chapter 19
Over the River and Through the Woods

Sesshomaru and Shippo walked down the rural streets of Venezuela. They were heading towards the local police department.

Hidden under their concealment spells, they looked like tourists. People they passed by often tried to sell their merchandise. Sesshomaru couldn't help but stop when he saw a hand-crafted quilt. He bought it.

“What's with the blanket?” Shippo pestered. He knew all to well that Sesshomaru was buying that blanket for his mate.

Sesshomaru narrowed his eyes, “Rin, you ass! Whom else would I buy this for?”

Shippo chuckled, and shrugged his shoulders but stopped abruptly. He noticed Sesshomaru did the same. “You heard that too, didn't you?” He swore he'd heard gunfire.

“Yeah kit, I heard it.”

Both staring intently into the depths of the jungle, “That was defiantly a gun. Do you think someone is hunting? Should we investigate?” Shippo asked quietly.

Sesshomaru closed his eyes, “It doesn't sound like a hunting party.” He balled his hands into tight fists. Determination set on his face, as he turned toward the man with whom he just purchased the blanket. Giving the man directions needed so he could properly ship his merchandise. He gave the man a large sum of money; and a promising threat, “When I return to my room, it better be there! I'd hate to see what happens to you if you don't!” he growled.

“Sí señor.” The elder man paled, “Muchas gracias señor.”

Sesshomaru nodded, then turned his attention, back to the forest, “Well Shippo looks like we have a hike ahead of us.”

“What! We can't just go in a jungle unprepared. We need the proper equipment!”

“What happened to you? Where were you then, when this equipment wasn't even invented?” Sesshomaru sneered.

Shippo growled, “Fine, I would love to hear the mighty Lord of the Western Lands, whine about, `How he got his ass kicked by the jungle.'”

Sesshomaru smirked, “We'll see.” With that said, he strolled behind a house, and then jumped into a nearby tree. “Come on Shippo!”

Shippo grumbled before following Sesshomaru. `Inuyasha, I swear you better be alive, cause when I see you I'm going to kill you! Especially, after enduring your brother!' he shook his head eradicating the negative thoughts, the followed quickly after Sesshomaru.

Sango gave hugs to her secondary family. “It was good seeing you. And please don't hesitate to call.” She felt like she accomplished something being at the Higurashi home. `Hopefully, Asuka won't have a relapse.'

Approaching her car, she gave the house a final look and then stepped into her two-door coupe. Turning the ignition, she backed away and drove home. She was tired and stressed.

Pulling up to her drive she parked her car and stepped foot into her one bedroom apartment. Checking her messages, she noticed she had two. Pressing play, she listened as she sorted through her mail. The first message was from her adopted mother. She smiled, and then listened to the second message. It was her friend.

Sango's face paled, when her friend said she would be picking her up around 8:00 pm. She grunted, `I'm in no mood to deal with a date.' Yep her good friend thought it would be best if she dated. The problem was, they were wrong for her, and ended up leaving earlier than anticipated.

Sango called her friend back, “Yes, Sarah I will be ready. But can you at least tell me about my date?”

She waited for an answer, “No! Why not? Oh come on…can't you at least give me his name?”

Sango smiled, “Miroku? I like the sound of his name,” she giggled, “Okay I promise I won't be late.” She shook her head, while hanging up the phone, then headed upstairs for a much-needed nap.

Kagome screamed violently into the air as her hair flew wildly around her. She kept her eyes closed, too afraid to watch her own demise. She couldn't believe he jumped. She thought her heart was going to explode as they dropped what seemed like an eternity. Yet, she never let go.

Inuyasha could only hope that he'd made the right choice. The river looked deep enough, yet scolded himself for his lack of judgment. `How am I going to get us out of this mess?' he thought, as he watched the strong current below. He was a powerful swimmer, but these waves look wild and unbridled.

Before he could react, he held Kagome, as if she was his very life source. With a loud `splash', they went under the cloudy water, as he could feel the inertia of the water pulling them further down.

With powerful strokes, he managed to break the surface. As they, both gasped for air. Coughing, he fought the waves as he tried to swim safely to shore. However, every time he managed, they ended further down stream.

Inuyasha was thankful that the river was indeed deep enough when they fell into its cold depths. Yet, he still managed to chastise himself for his careless behavior. `What was I thinking?' he pondered, while trying to keep his head above the surface, as the water splashed against his face.

If it wasn't the angry river that tried to swallow them whole wasn't enough of a problem. He had to deal with debris and the giant rocks, which rubbed against his skin. That of course didn't bother him, as long as Kagome was uninjured. “Kagome,” he coughed, as some of the river-water splashed in his mouth.

Kagome looked at him, fearfully. Was this it? Was he telling her goodbyes? Tears pricked her eyes, yet the water on her face hid the fact that she wanted to cry. “Yes,” she said brokenly.

“Kagome,” he sputtered again. “I need your help…do you think…that you can get…on my back?”

Even though his sentence was broken, she nodded her head `yes' then complied. `Was that it? Was that what he was going to say to me all along?' Letting go of his waste turned out to be more of a challenge than she'd expected. Especially when the current caught her and attempted to pull her away from Inuyasha. Nevertheless, she desperately clung to his neck. “I can't!” she cried, kicking her legs fiercely with the river's strong undertow.

“You have to!” Inuyasha fought to keep his head above the water. Kagome's weight was dragging him down also. He grabbed her by the waste with his strong arms. He pulled her against the current, but it was effortless. “Damn!”

He'd thought about using one of the boulders for leverage. However, they would be crushed into the rocks, repeatedly. He was amazed that they hadn't reached any of those boulders yet. He guessed being in the center of the river had its rewards-one being that they were still alive.

Kagome had a death grip on his neck. She was getting tired, yet managed keep her grasp. She stopped kicking her legs, since it was fruitless and would only tire herself further.

They had no choice but to drift with the tides, as the river carried them downstream.

Naraku, made it quickly to where Hiten was waiting. “Well, what happened?” Naraku asked sternly. “I can still smell them.” He grabbed Hiten by the throat; snarling, “Tell me!”

“He jumped…” Hiten tried to speak, but his boss's hands gripped tightly around his neck, cutting off his oxygen. He could swear his face was turning red. He pointed his finger over to the ravine, “He grabbed Kagome…and jumped over the cliff.”

“What was the gunshot I heard?” Naraku demanded as he loosened his grip.

“It was a warning. I tried to stop them Naraku!” Hiten pleaded with the malicious man before him. He tried not to look into his heated eyes, and just counted his blessing a bit longer-grateful that he was still alive. Although he didn't know for how much longer.

He pushed Hiten away; with a scowl on his face, he then proceeded to walk over to the ledge. He looked down, at the raging river. `Could they have survived the fall?' he inquired, as he rubbed his chin.

Hiten rubbed his throat soothingly; he turned to his boss, “What are your orders sir?”

Naraku narrowed his eyes as he watched the torrent below him, “Send men out to patrol both sides of the river. If they survived, we will be able to track them again. The hunt isn't over…its just begun.” He smiled then walked towards the direction he came. He paused then looked over his shoulder, “Should I say what will happen if you fail me again.”

Hiten shook his head `no,' “I assure you, I will not fail you again, sir.”

Naraku was beyond angry he was pissed. He had to hold back on ripping Hiten's throat out. However, knew that he was a valuable asset to the hunt. He and Bankotsu were. However, there was that lackey that stayed behind. He smiled cruelly, as the men stepped into the clearing.

He walked over the officer, “I'll take this beast off your hands,” he smiled as the man gave him the leash. Placing his arm around his shoulder, in a friendly manner, Naraku lead him towards the ledge. He turned to look at Bankotsu. “Take this,” he said, handing the leash over, as Bankotsu accepted it with a slight smile.

“So tell me do you like being on my force?” Naraku asked, he really didn't care. All he cared about was finding his escaped prisoners. Even if they did perish, there had to be a body. He would find out whether his hunt was successful or if it wasn't. He only hoped that is was.

“Yes sir I do,” the young man responded. He felt nervous, but tried to remain strong in front of his boss.

Naraku stopped right at the ledge he looked down, “Tell me, do you think that anyone could survive a fall like that?” he asked, while pointing down. He watched the brown hair boy look over the cliff. His piercing blue eyes reminded him of the sky. It made him sick.

“No sir, I don't believe so.”

“No? What a shame, how about we find out if your theory is correct.”

Naraku didn't hesitate, to literally push the young man over the cliff, as he listened to the boy scream all the way down. That is until he hit the water, with a sounding thud—what seemed like a splash? Naraku watched as the strong current swept the now lifeless body downstream. He chuckled, “Well I guess you were right.” He turned towards his two awaiting men, “Come we have treasure to find.”

“Inuyasha,” Kagome said hesitantly.

“What?”

“Is that the end of the river?” she asked, as she noticed the tributary, suddenly ended.

“What the hell?”

“This isn't good is it?” Kagome inquired, while trying to remain calm. However, it wasn't working very well. “Inuyasha…Oh, God Inuyasha! What are we going to do?”

He honestly didn't know what to do, there was nothing he could grab to stop them. “Pray.”

“What?”

“I said pray…pray that we make it out alive. Cause other than that, I can't do anything. Sweetheart were basically fucked.” Was this it? Were they going to die together?

“Don't give me that shit, you're a demon? Are you not? Don't tell me that!” She was in hysterics now; tears were freely coming down the sides of her cheeks.

“Inuyasha…I just wanted to let you know, that I love you. I've never loved anyone as much as I love you.” If she were going to die today, then at least she would get to say her last vows. “I'm grateful to spend these last few days with you Inuyasha. I wouldn't change it for the world.” If she could reach his lips, she would have kissed him wholeheartedly.

Inuyasha smiled, “I feel the same way Kagome. I love you so much. Thank you for being with me…a mere half-demon.” He choked, not because of the water but because, he was sure this was the end. He would never have the opportunity to argue with her again, or be able to touch her-loving the feel of her soft hands graze over his skin. “You Kagome made me a very happy man.”

Suddenly, the river ended, and they went over the waterfall screaming as they descended towards their watery grave.
