Shared Pain

Inuyasha sat down on the grass, joining his son in gazing solemnly out over the landscape from their position atop a small rise.  He had known he would find Hiroshi here; this had been one of his son’s favorite places to take his aging wife during her final years.  And now, with his beloved gone, her ashes scattered to the wind, Hiroshi still came here, gripped by the same compulsion which had drawn Inuyasha time and again to Goshinboku twenty years ago when Kagome had passed.  Had it really only been that long?  Why did his time with her seem so fleeting now, when each year since her death felt like a decade?

At least Hiroshi had been able to experience aging with his wife to some extent; he now appeared to be in his late thirties, while Inuyasha’s appearance suggested mid-twenties at most.  As a quarter-youkai, Hiroshi would not live as long as his hanyou sire, but still possessed a life span far greater than that of the average human.  And for the rest of his time on earth, he would know the pain his father had borne for the past twenty years.  But that was why Inuyasha was here, to provide what comfort he could.  Theirs was an ache shared by all widowers, yet unique.

“You okay?” Inuyasha said quietly.  Hiroshi did not respond for a few moments, and when he did, his gaze never wavered from the horizon.

“This hurt…it never goes away, does it?”

“No,” Inuyasha answered honestly.  Silence again settled between the pair, as the elder man gave his son a chance to gather his thoughts.

“Do you remember what you said to me after Okaa-san died?” Hiroshi asked.  Inuyasha thought about it; he did indeed remember.  But he sensed it would be more helpful for his son to say it.

“Remind me.”

“I was trying to comfort you, and you said it was alright.  You had known true happiness, because even though you could live another few centuries, and would never love another, you didn’t regret a moment you spent with her.”

“Well, I came to make sure your head was in the right place, but it looks like you’re way ahead of me.”  Inuyasha stood to leave, then paused to offer one final sentiment.  “Stay involved in your kids’ lives.”

“I will,” Hiroshi replied, looking at his father for the first time.  “I know they’ll appreciate it,” he said meaningfully.

Inuyasha smiled, then began making his way back toward the village.  The wind gusted suddenly, drawing the leaves and sakura petals up to dance with his hair.  The hanyou breathed deeply of the cool air, allowing his mind to drift off.  I know you’re sad for him, Kagome, and as proud as I am.  We raised a smart son, Kagome.  A really, really smart son.
