Alive Again

“Keh.  I guess the time you spend at that kitsune school isn’t a complete waste.”

Shippou frowned.  By this point, he could easily see past Inuyasha’s gruff exterior.  And he didn’t periodically offer to show off his latest illusions out of any need for approval.  Still, it was disconcerting to see the hanyou so detached from the people who tried to keep him involved in their lives. It had been nearly three years since Kagome returned to her time, and though Inuyasha had always struggled, lately his lack of passion for the world around him had gotten worse.  Shippou decided to do something about that.

“Kitsune-bi!” he cried, summoning forth the blue flame, shaping it to his whim as he had recently learned to do.

Inuyasha froze in shock, unable to breath.  Kagome…  And suddenly, the fires made in her likeness shifted in his mind’s eye, becoming the woman he loved, and feared he would never see again.  She reached out to him, and he reciprocated, their fingers coming closer and closer until she vanished into thin air just before contact.  Then silence returned, reigning for several long moments.

“You know she’s going to come back, right?” Shippou asked.

Inuyasha did not respond.  Instead, he stared at his shaking hand, felt and listened to the thundering of his heart in his chest.  Blood rushed through his veins as it had not done in almost three years.  He felt…alive again.  Perhaps Shippou was right; perhaps Kagome would return.  He needed to be occasionally reminded of that, to remember what if felt like to be by her side, in order to keep his faith.  Shippou understood.

“Thank you,” he whispered.

Shippou nodded, pleased with his idea.  Smiling happily, he left the hanyou to his thoughts, which he was certain would be pleasant.
