A/N – I posted this a week ago and then took it down the next day. Comm rules say you can’t post a story elsewhere until voting is completed, and I jumped the gun on that (voting results for the previous prompt came out, and I thought it was for this one). Oops.
Defiance
Jaken held his breath, not daring to make a sound for fear of drawing the attention of the two titans squaring off. One of the combatants was his master, whose chilling glare had brought fear and doubt to many foes. His adversary, however, remained unperturbed. And somehow, the human woman opposing Sesshoumaru seemed just as imposing as he.
“Perhaps this Sesshoumaru did not make himself clear,” the taiyoukai spoke softly but firmly. “You will remain in this village. You will find a husband and bear his children. You will live with your own kind.”
Rin met his fervent gaze with one of her own, defiant and unafraid. “No, I won’t.”
Jaken found himself in awe of the scene. Sesshoumaru was incredibly difficult to read, even for one who was constantly by his side. But Jaken possessed some tentative insight into his master’s heart and mind. Deep down, he sensed that Sesshoumaru had come to see Rin in a new light, as she matured over the years. She was now at the age where other human women would settle down and start a family. But Rin did not desire that life, at least not with a mortal husband.
Jaken sensed great turmoil within Sesshoumaru, pure emotion warring with reason and responsibility. Perhaps that was why he pushed Rin away. And yet, though Sesshoumaru was perfectly capable of taking to the skies and leaving Rin behind, he did not. It was as though he needed her to give up on him, before he could let her go. And because she would not…
“Do as you will.”
With that, Sesshoumaru turned and stalked into the forest, Rin settling into an easy pace at his side. Jaken shook his head as he walked behind them. Things were never going to be the same.
