Outside the carriage she watched the green hillsides on the side of the roads teeming with life. She enjoyed watching the creatures and inwardly wished for a life of simplicity such as theirs.
She was brought out of her thoughts abruptly by her father “Kagome, I have something I need to discuss with you.” Akira said his eyes filled with anxiety.
“Ok. What is it?” She watched as her father fidgeted, what could have made him this way?
“In half a week, the prince of the Eastern kingdom, Kouga, will be here to… strengthen the bond between our two countries…” He began.
Kouga, she remembered him with a small grimace. They had met a few years back when she had visited the East on a peace mission with her father. She often caught him leering at her although she never really spoke with him much after their incident.
He had come on to her and a little too strongly at that. He was very possessive and had been brought up getting everything he wanted. In short he was spoiled. Adding on the fact that she became nothing more than “his woman” in his eyes, she rejected him. Since then they were on less than amicable terms.
“…if all goes well, we hope to join the two of you together to solidify our two nations into one stronger one.” Akira looked at his daughter's face as the colour drained from it and he prepared himself for what was to come.
“WHAT?!? Why would you do something like that without so much as telling me?!? I barely know him!” She shrieked. “Why would you even consider this, you know how I felt last time we met!”
“Don't you talk to you're …” he began but was cut off by the carriage driver announcing their arrival.
“Sir, we're here. But this sure is a gruesome sight…” the driver sounded as if he was about to faint.
Akira stepped out of the carriage hoping something here would cut off his daughter's tirade. His prayers were answered as she stopped in her tracks mouth open in a gape as she looked around.
The ground was littered with corpses of the villagers. Their eyes frozen in pain and the ground were littered with blood. Not one of the villagers had survived it seemed.
“Sir over there” A soldier yelled pointing in the direction of a large corpse. A demon corpse.
Akira looked it over with a grimace on his face. `Who? Who could've taken down this beast?' The demon was dead alright, it appeared to have a sword wound through its skull but the sword seemed to have been withdrawn.
He looked over as one of his guards came across what apparently was a survivor. It was a boy looking about to be the same age as his daughter. Dressed completely in red and with black hair matted with blood.
Kagome snapped out of her stupor at the mention of someone alive and, after grabbing the medicinal supplies from the cart, rushed over to the boy. “Oh my god, how is he alive? His wounds are so terrible…”
She worked fast to wrap up the deep gash in his side, noting a few broken ribs. The more she looked the more she marveled at his will to live. He had wounds that should have killed him yet he was still alive.
“Kagome, what are you doing? He doesn't have very long left you should see that,” his tone comforting. “Come on, it was a bad idea to bring you here after all, let's go back.”
She didn't give any indication that she heard him as she called for a stretcher and handed out several orders to the surrounding men, all of whom obeyed. Akira was amazed at how she seemed to be in complete control under pressure. Maybe she was stronger than he thought.
“Please father, come on we have to hurry or else he'll die” She looked up at him with a pleading look and he couldn't take it. Sighing he got on the carriage and they all traveled back to the castle.
Everything hurt. His entire body ached and he couldn't move it at all. His mind raced, what had happened? He remembered a bull demon but how did he get here. He was on something soft he realized. Slowly he opened the weights that were his eyebrows and took in his surroundings.
He was in a stone room looking to be an infirmary. It seemed the castle had taken him in after the battle but he had no idea as to why he was being treated. Noticing dullness in his senses he realized what was going on. He was human! `Damn it! Now what? With this body I can't move and if I stay here I'm in trouble.”
“Are you awake already? Boy, that was fast.” He would've jumped at the voice had he not been injured. One inch at a time he moved his head to see a girl by his bed staring at him. “If you're wondering where you are, you're in the castle's infirmary. Who are you?”
Narrowing his eyes at her he spoke in a harsh tone, “What do you care?” She was taken aback by his words.
“What do you mean? I just saved your life you could show a little gratitude!” Her voice rising.
“Why? I didn't ask for any help.” He stared at her as her eyebrow twitched.
“Would you rather be out there dead right now?” She asked coldly. “Because I could throw you back out there.” He turned away and didn't answer. “Here let's start over, my name is Kagome what's yours?”
He turned back to her. “It's Inuyasha but I still don't know why you care.”
“Aren't you a villager? If so you're in our land so we should take…”
“I'm not a villager, I just happened to be passing through at the wrong time.”
“You're a traveler?” she asked. Then a thought struck her. “Do you think you could…tell me something about the outside world? He gave her a questioning look. “You see I'm curious. I've been cooped up in this castle my whole life and I want to know what its like.”
“It's not something to be too excited about. In my experience it's better to not know. Worrying about being killed every day isn't fun.” She stared back at him.
“What do you mean? Shouldn't the king take care of everything and keep it safe?”
“Keh!” He started to try to get up “Who told you that? The royalty just keeps themselves safe and doesn't care about anybody else.”
“Hey, don't move you're going to hurt yourself.” She gently stopped him and got him to lie down again. “Well I don't know what other kingdoms you've been too but here it's safe. Well except from the odd demon I suppose.”
He stared at her incredulously. `Is she that naïve?' Then his gaze shifted out the window across from his bed. There was light starting to peak over the horizon. `Shit!'
“Inuyasha are you alright? You look nervous.” He stared at her for a second before deciding what to do.
“Take me out of this castle now!” he yelled at her. She stared at him for a second.
“What do you mean? You're lucky to be alive! You're going to be bedridden for a month with these wounds.” He looked like he'd been slapped.
“Hey I'm not a weak human stupid girl!” He realized too late what he had just shouted as her face took on a look of confusion.
“What do you mean? You look human enough” She stood up from her chair and backed away slowly towards the door. “Are you ok? Did you suffer some head injury?”
He was starting to feel himself gain power. `If she goes to get someone else I'm done for.' Ignoring his body he leapt out of the bed and tackled her to the ground clasping his hand over her mouth. She stared up at him in shock as his hair and eyes flashed. `Wha…what is he?'
