She stood up and followed, her face covered once again. As they got back to the clearing, they saw a battle going on. Demons had invaded and were locked in battle with the resistance.
Inuyasha leapt into combat with a roar, cleaving through two demons that were ganging up on one of the resistance members. Without waiting for thanks, he leapt into the main fray. “Go find the others!” He hollered back at her.
She followed his command and ran off to find Miroku and Sango. A demon jumped at her with its sword raised, only to be killed by a swipe of a staff. Miroku was standing above her brandishing his staff in one hand, sutras in another. “What are you doing out here?” He asked as he intercepted another demon with a thrown scroll, purifying him instantly. “Come on stay close to me.”
She nodded, deciding she'd take him over the demon hordes. Over his shoulder she saw Sango let loose her giant weapon, and watched in awe as it cut its way through a large group of demons. She was alright too.
Then she heard a voice she'd like to forget. “KAGOME!!!” Kouga burst into the clearing raking through five men, severing the life from them.
`What's he doing here?! There couldn't be a worse time for this!' Then she noticed something else, the air became thick and hard to breathe in. `What's going on? Something's wrong…'Miroku noticed him too but didn't think much of him as Sango rushed him.
Sango charged him throwing her weapon with a yell, “Hiraikotsu!” Kouga leapt out of the way as the weapon careened past him.
“If you're holding Kagome here, I won't forgive you!” His hand traveled to his side and he drew his sword. The air immediately grew thick with evil. Kagome's body grew cold as a wave of evil washed over her.
`What is that thing?' She thought, gazing at the deep-purple hued sword in Kouga's hand. It was pure evil, its aura pulsating with death and malice. She noticed his eyes flashed dark purple with its release from its sheath.
Kouga leapt at Sango and thrust the sword, aiming at her chest. She barely managed to dodge the blow, the air the sword cut through hissing as it grew tainted. She raised her hand and caught the returning boomerang and swung it at him. He jumped it cleanly and slashed downwards, towards her head. She raised her weapon to block it.
There was a loud noise like a thunder crack as Sango was thrown to the ground, her weapon sent flying off to the side, lodging itself in a nearby tree. “Sango!” Miroku called out and ran forward desperately trying to help her. Kouga raised his sword to deliver the killing strike.
`I have to help her!' Looking around wildly she noticed a bow and arrow by her foot. She had been taught to shoot one, even if she didn't have much confidence in it… `No choice!' She picked it up and notched the arrow, aiming at Kouga.
She let the arrow fly, bursting into pink flames as it sped towards him. It missed its target, instead connecting with the blade. It exploded on contact covering the sword's purple aura with pink energy. `Wha…What did I just?' With a shriek of pain Kouga jumped backwards as his hand was seared with the light.
He looked over at her and sniffed the air. “Kagome!” He called as he turned in her direction. He leapt over Miroku to land next to her. Then he was instantly decked by a red and silver blur.
“Who the fuck are you?” Inuyasha snarled as he pinned Kouga to the ground, his sword sheathed. “How do you know her?!” He was furious. It would take a miracle to keep her secret now. Kouga kicked him hard in the stomach, launching him off him. Inuyasha landed neatly in a crouch as Kouga leapt to his feet.
“Who the fuck am I?! Who the fuck are you?!” Then understanding dawned on him. “You're the half-breed kidnapper! If you did anything to her I'll…”
“Answer the question!” Inuyasha roared with a bite to his voice he didn't even know he had. “How do you know her?!” Kouga smirked.
“She's my woman. She was promised to me and no scum like you are going stop me from taking what's mine!” Inuyasha cast a glance back at Kagome who was shaking, staring fearfully at Kouga.
“By the looks of things that's bullshit!” He drew his sword, and pointed it in his direction. “Prepare to die!” He charged.
“I'm taking my property back!” Kouga rushed as well. The second they reached each other, their blades connected. Inuyasha hissed in pain as the evil energy, although dulled by Kagome's arrow, went through the swords. His hand pulsated purple as it began to burn. Kouga took this opportunity to fling the sword out of Inuyasha's hands.
“DIE!!!!” He leveled the sword point at Inuyasha's throat. He spun to the side to see an arrow coming directly at his head, this one directly on the mark. He pulled out of the way to avoid the arrow, but the pink flares burned his face on passing.
“Inuyasha! Get away! There's something wrong with him!” Kagome leveled another arrow, aiming directly for Kouga. All traces of her fear were gone. His face was contorted, burned by the arrow's energy. `I did it again…what is it?' Deciding it didn't matter, she let the third arrow fly.
Kouga raised Muramasa to block it, the two forces colliding with each other. The arrow lost, but not without searing a good part of Kouga's hand. Roaring in pain, he turned and ran. “I'll be back Kagome! When I do, I'll get rid of that attitude of yours!” Noticing their leader's withdrawal, all the demons that were still alive followed.
As soon as Kouga was out of view, Kagome ran over to Inuyasha. “Are you ok?” She brought his sword hand into view and whimpered. The flesh was burned and raw. He yanked his hand away.
“I'll live, I'm fine.” He yanked his hand away, then realizing that was a mistake as the limb burned.
She grabbed it back. “You're not fine, let me see it!” Concern getting the better of her, she failed to notice Miroku and Sango's bemused looks. They turned to awe as pinkish light radiated from her hand, healing Inuyasha's flesh.
Four gasps sounded as the hand was completely healed, no traces of the injury remaining. “Wha…What did I do? That happened before. What is it?” She was close to panic, thinking there was something wrong with her.
“I take it you don't know.” Her head snapped to look at Miroku. “Those abilities are those of a priestess. I'm amazed you're mother didn't tell you at all about this.”
“My mother? She wasn't…She couldn't…not this…” she stared back at her hands in fear. `What am I?' A gruff voice brought her out of her thoughts.
“Hey! What the hell are you afraid of? If anyone should be afraid of this it's me! I'm the one with demon in me!” Inuyasha said getting up, realizing his strength once again.
“You mean this isn't a bad thing?” Inuyasha shook his head.
“Nope.” He then smirked at her. “Somebody told me once, that it don't matter what you're born like right?” She smiled and nodded.
“Ahem.” Two heads turned to look at Miroku who was staring at them with an accusing gaze. “Now I believe its time to explain a few things, eh?”
A soft gasp drew their attention as they turned to see that Shippo had returned. “What happened here?” He asked, looking around at the many corpses that littered the landscape.
“Listen Monk. No matter what you hear, you don't do anything against Kagome or I or even the kit got it?” Miroku nodded and Inuyasha glared at Sango, expecting the same. After she nodded he grunted in satisfaction.
“I'm the former princess of the north kingdom,” Kagome began. “The castle was besieged and Inuyasha saved me.”
“I see… Inuyasha any particular reason that you did this?”
“She saved my life, so I saved hers. No big deal.” Miroku grinned.
“And yet you're still with her… are you sure there's no other reason?” His eyebrows wiggling suggestively. THWACK! Face down in the dirt.
“Sorry about that.” Sango lifted up Miroku's face and glared into his half-lidded eyes. “Keep your comments to yourself, lecher. I'm sure you know that Inuyasha isn't the type of person to leave a defenseless girl alone, right?”
“My dear Sango, how can you say harmless after what you just witnessed?”
Before Sango could reply, Kagome spoke up. “What can you tell me about priestesses?”
Inuyasha spoke this time, “Priestesses are basically people with spiritual energy capable of purifying demons.”
“Indeed. What perplexes me more is how you are one, Kagome…” He frowned in thought. “The powers can only be passed down hereditarily. If you're mother wasn't a priestess, then how could you have inherited such abilities?”
“I don't know.” Then, a memory came back to her. “Wait, my mother said once that my grandmother had died long ago fighting demons…” She looked up, “I suppose since there's no way she could have wielded a weapon, she must've had some sort of powers.”
“Well I suppose it must be able to skip over generations, although I've never heard of that.” Sango said.
“Hey, Kagome?” Kagome looked down to see Shippo staring up at her fearfully. “Are you reeealy a priestess?”
She smiled. “Maybe but even if I am you have nothing to worry about.” Shippo smiled back at her, relieved. “Go play outside, it's going to get boring in here.” He nodded and scampered outside.
“But is it really alright,” Kagome began directing her gaze and Sango and Miroku. “I mean, everyone's going to be upset with me here aren't they?” She asked. “I mean it's amazing you're still being friendly.” She added under her breath, looking at the floor.
“It's alright, if not just a little awkward to having a peaceful discussion with you.” Sango said. Kagome regarded her curiously.
“I remember you by the way.” Sango stiffened just a little bit. “I don't suppose you were just pretending to be someone you're not for fun, right?” Sango smiled sadly.
“Let me explain. I was assigned there to watch Naraku. We never really wanted to fight against the castle. It was just the only way to get at Naraku. He was the one who had the control over the village's way of life.”
“That's right.” Miroku added. “He ruled over the populace with heavy taxes and unjust laws. He was the target. We didn't have anything against the royal family.” Kagome nodded but still didn't seem convinced.
“Keh! What does it matter anyway?” Everyone turned to look at Inuyasha. “We're all after the same guy here aren't we? Why don't we just drop all this crap and get the bastard responsible for all this.” He stood up.
Miroku rose with him. “That's right. I think that's enough for tonight. Let's all get some sleep and think things through in the morning.”
