They had been traveling for the entire day. When at last night came, they had found a village. “Headman, this place is possessed!” Miroku declared causing the owner of the inn they had chosen to tremble in fear.
“Please Lord Monk, please exorcise my humble inn. I do not have much to offer but perhaps you may like free lodgings?”
“As a man of the cloth I need no payment, however…” He looked away for a few seconds before turning back to the owner. “It would be best if I were to stay here at least for the night in case the spirits return.” Miroku nodded a couple of times to emphasize his point.
“Yes, that's fine, just please help!” Miroku led the headman out of the room to the source of the evil, leaving his companions behind. Some looked frightened, while others looked bored.
“Is…is there really an evil spirit here?” Shippo asked trembling in fear on Kagome's equally unstable shoulder.
“Keh! There's no spirit here!” This caused two confused faces to look at him. “The only evil here is a crooked monk!” He sat down in the room looking surly.
“I'm sorry Kagome… Miroku always does this.” Sango said in a disapproving tone. “Every night when he's on the road and finds a village…”
“So there's no spirit here?” Kagome asked.
“Nope”
“Shouldn't we do something? Should we just let him get away with this?”
Inuyasha looked up at her. “I'm used to being thrown outside, but I imagine you weak humans may not like that.” Kagome considered this for a moment before deciding to let it slide, at least for tonight.
Miroku came back with a very relieved headman. “Thank you, thank you; you don't know how much I appreciate you doing this. Let me show you and your companions to their rooms.” He waved them on and they followed.
The king of the eastern kingdom was pacing in his chamber, quite worried. His son had been consorting with this Naraku person and had changed drastically. He barely ever smiles now, his eyes seem so cold. The only emotion he ever shows is when that girl is brought up.
It had started when his son had returned from a battle he had apparently lost. He was exhausted and had severe burns on his hands looking to be from a priestess. From there all he could do was talk of Kagome. He had learned that the princess of the north was still alive and Kouga wanted her. However this “want” went far beyond what he had ever showed. It had become a dark and seemingly deadly obsession.
“Please dear, could you stop pacing?” His wife spoke up from the bed. She had woken up and he went back to the bed to appease her. “What are you so worried about anyway?”
He looked away. “It's just Kouga…” The queen grimaced with him. “With all the freedom I've given him he's made some really odd decisions. Making that alliance and taking large amounts of money out of the treasury for god knows what.”
“Well… however odd theses decisions are, maybe they'll help in the end. Kouga isn't a boy anymore, I'm sure he'll go on to become a great king.” She offered him a smile. He smiled weakly back.
“Prince Kouga, what is the meaning of—Augh!” The king looked up from his bed at the noises of fighting. He leapt out of bed and opened his chamber doors to meet his son's angry face.
“Bastard! How dare you try to keep me away from Kagome!” He pulled out his sword at leveled it at his father.
“Kouga! I'm your father! What the hell are you doing?!” Kouga snarled and smacked his father with the flat of his blade, knocking him to the ground as his mother's scream echoed.
“Kagome is mine! No bastard like you will keep me away from her!” He raised his sword and dropped it, taking off his father's head. He smirked, completely unfazed but what he'd just done.
“Kouga why did you do that?!” The queen leapt from the bed to run to her son, only to get his sword through her heart. She slumped to the floor, dead.
Kouga spun around and sheathed his sword with a snarl, walking out of the room. He looked at the servant that had brought him the news of his father's plot. He had said his father was planning to keep him from having Kagome. “Good job! You are most valuable. Keep this up and you will earn yourself riches beyond your wildest dreams!”
The servant nodded gleefully and backed out of the way as Kouga swept past him. He then took off in the opposite direction out into the gardens. “Boy! Boy! I did what you asked!” He called. “What's my reward?!”
Silently a figure dropped from a tree beside him and snatched him into the bushes, plunging a knife into his throat. There was a small gurgle as the man died the assassin's face emotionless. He had completed his task.
He stood up taking the corpse with him as to not alert Kouga of the deception. His mission complete, he leaped up the walls of the castle. `Mission complete, return', was the only thought that crossed his mind.
Kagome woke to a soft voice. She slowly rose opening her eyes to see Shippo talking in his sleep. “Father, mother, we'll be together forever” She grimaced at this. How hard it must've been for him to have his parents killed at his age.
`Better not to wake him if he's dreaming about them.' She decided and got up, needing to find a bathroom. She exited the room and walked down the hall to the bathroom, passing the room where Inuyasha and Miroku were.
“What the fuck? Are you sure?” came through the door. Kagome stopped in her tracks.
“Yes, my spies are never wrong… If this is true than things are worse than we thought…”
`Miroku and Inuyasha? What's wrong?' She quietly moved closer to the door, ignoring her conscious berating her for eavesdropping.
“That's fucking… Damn it… How fucking evil do you have to be to kill your own father?” Kagome's heart skipped at this. Something bad had happened and she had to know what?
She tore open the door to find two sullen faces look up at her startled. “What's going on?” She looked from Miroku to Inuyasha, demanding an answer.
“It seems Kouga's further gone than we had thought. I've received word that he has killed his father.” He stopped and sighed, “Also from the report I have received, he did it without hesitation after hearing that his father had planned to keep you away from him.”
“But…why?”
“He's gone insane Kagome.” Inuyasha said simply. “That's all there is to it. The sword did it and it probably can't be reversed.”
“Isn't there someway? There must be some way to stop this! How many more have to die before this is over?” Tears sprang to her eyes.
Inuyasha growled softly in annoyance and stood up. He walked closer to her, “Now I don't know who this guy is or how you know him, but I do know we'll definitely fight again.”
“Inuyasha…” Miroku began but was cut off by Inuyasha's hand.
“Do you still want to do this? Fight someone you know this well?” His eyes bored into hers as her breath left her.
She took a second to steady herself and replied, “I don't know him that well. He just seems to think so…”
“Answer the question.” He said quietly, a hint of worry in his voice.
“If Kouga is gone… then he's gone.” She said looking away. “If that's how it is we have to stop him.” She then added quietly. “I'm just upset that all this happened because of me…”
Inuyasha's expression turned pained at her words. She looked at him questioning but he turned away to look at the wall. “Go to bed then, I don't want you to fall behind tomorrow.” He walked over at sat down, keeping his gaze fixed on the wall.
She nodded slowly and after saying goodnight to Miroku left the room. `What happened in there? Why did he look so pained? I'll have to ask him tomorrow…' Then she stopped suddenly with a gasp as another realization dawned on her. `He said my name…'
She spun around to stare back at the room. `Maybe… maybe I'm not just a burden to him? Maybe even a friend?' She shook her head to clear her mind. `Something else to look into for tomorrow, now it's time to sleep or else I'll be back to being a burden.' Resolved, she walked back down the all to settle back in bed.
