“Wow…” Kagome breathed as she looked upon the Shrine of Light. It was a giant stone structure, stretching so far up into the sky that it disappeared into the clouds. It gleamed with light making it seem like it was made out of diamond.
Inuyasha stood around impatiently, waiting for his power to return. “Damn it, how long do I have to stay this way?” He muttered kicking at some pebbles.
Kagome was about to say something but the sound of running feet made her turn around. Sango, Miroku and Shippo were running towards them.
“Inuyasha!” Sango called happily.
“You're alive!” Miroku called just as happy.
“Keh! I'm not gonna die because of that flea bitten wolf!” He answered as they joined.
“Well we're glad you're alright.” Miroku said. Inuyasha looked at him before muttering a quick thanks. Miroku instantly understood what he meant.
“Well now that we're here we have to move fast.” Kagome said. “Kouga's still alive and although this valley has reduced his ability to find me it's only a matter of time.”
“Alive? How can that be?” Sango asked.
“I don't know. I remember shoving that little explosive down the wolf's throat…” Inuyasha said and then looked at Shippo. “Maybe it wasn't as strong as I thought.”
Shippo glared at him. “It was stronger than the first one I let off!” He shot back.
“Well you could have fooled me!” Inuyasha retorted.
“Enough already.” Miroku said placating the two. “We don't need an argument, we need a plan.”
“Well I guess we go in there.” Kagome said motioning to the giant structure behind them. Sango gaped and Miroku whistled in astonishment.
“So big…” Shippo said in awe craning his neck up to the sky. “Can we really do it?”
“We don't have a choice. We have to hurry before—” Kagome stopped suddenly and her face went pale.
“What is it?” Sango asked quickly.
“I-I-I felt something. It felt like several hundred Muramasas were coming towards us.” The ground shook suddenly as a deafening explosion filled their ears.
“Shit…” Inuyasha whispered looking off in the distance. The group followed his line of vision and went as pale as Kagome.
The cave they had come through had been blown apart. Smoke rose from it and chunks of rock flew through the air. “How did that happen?” Shippo asked fearfully. “Who could have done that?”
“Naraku…” Kagome said slowly. “I think he's found a way to harness the power of Muramasa!”
Inuyasha quickly grabbed her hand and began to run towards the structure. “Sango, Miroku we don't have anymore time. If we don't move now we'll be overtaken.”
Sango nodded and began to move but Miroku stood still. “Come on Miroku!” Inuyasha urged.
He shook his head. “I can feel the evil in the air growing thick. Seeing as Kouga hasn't found us I guess this valley dims his senses…” He said looking around. “That won't last much longer with this. Go on! I won't let another thing, living or dead, past me!”
“Miroku…” Kagome began but Inuyasha cut her off.
“Idiot. Trying to play the hero?” Inuyasha asked mockingly.
Miroku smiled back at him. “After seeing you do it so many times I figured I should give it a try.”
Inuyasha smirked. “You should know, it hurts like hell.”
Miroku laughed. “I expect it will, now go. I will back you up.”
Inuyasha nodded. “The idiot wants to prove himself, let's go.”
Sango shook her head. “I'll stay too. I can't leave him alone. What if he has one of his episodes?”
Shippo piped up. “I'll stay too! I've got to make sure Miroku doesn't fool around.” Miroku sighed.
“Guys please, we can't get separated.” Kagome pleaded. Inuyasha took her arm.
“You guys don't die, you got that?” They nodded and he turned towards the tower, dragging Kagome with him.
“Inuyasha!”
“Have faith in them.” He said sharply. “We'll get that sword and out in five minutes and there won't be a problem.” Kagome nodded slowly as they plunged into the inky blackness of the tower
Kouga ran around through the brush restlessly, cursing at every wrong turn. “Damn it!” He roared and rammed his fist into a tree, uprooting it and sending it over. “Every time I think I'm close it changes! "What the hell's with this place!?”
The ground below his feet darkened. Puzzled, he looked up. “What the—” The sky above him was growing darker. Deep purple clouds moved in and blotted out the sun's rays. He felt his senses return to normal as the area became corrupted.
He sniffed and caught Kagome's scent, much stronger and more powerful that it was before. He smirked and said, “I've got you my Kagome.” He took off towards the tower.
Kagome and Inuyasha had reached a great hall in the tower. The ceiling was so far up they couldn't see the top. Inuyasha once again grumbled about being human. “If I was normal I could see up there.” They kept walking, the space seemingly having no end.
After what seemed like ages, they reached a giant golden gate. The gates towered over their heads and shone with a brilliant light. “Well this looks promising.” Kagome said approvingly.
“Yeah, let's see if it opens.” Inuyasha said and took hold of the handle.
“Who dares to enter these halls?!” A voice rang out through the hall. Inuyasha jumped back from the door, his hand instinctively dropping to where his sword used to be, finding an empty sheath.
“W-What was that?” Kagome asked getting close to Inuyasha.
“Speak! Name thyselves!” The voice rang out again.
Kagome answered. “I am Kagome Higurashi.”
“And I'm Inuyasha.”
“Why have you come to these sacred halls!?”
“Why the hell do you think?!” Inuyasha roared back. “We're here for the sword.”
The voice laughed. “And just who do you think you are, half-demon? Do you really think you can wield the purity of the sword of light?!”
Inuyasha looked down at his hands to see he was still human. “How the hell did you know—”
“I know all!” The voice boomed. “Now answer the question!”
Kagome put her hand on his arm to try and placate him before he got into a screaming fest with the invisible voice. “Please! We need the sword to defeat Muramasa!”
The voice was silent. Then a glow appeared before them and the figure of a man appeared. He was tall, broad and dressed in royal robes. “So… you are the targets of that sword. However, this sword is not to be used by just anyone.”
Inuyasha growled despite being human. “I don't care how difficult it is to be used! I have to use this thing or else I won't be able to beat Kouga!”
The apparition looked over at him. “I am afraid you lack what is needed to wield the blade. I cannot give it to you.”
Miroku and Sango stood ready as the sky darkened. Shippo had retreated into some trees, his confidence gone as fast as it had come. Miroku wielded his staff and said a quick prayer as Sango readied her boomerang.
Miroku looked over in the distance. “The evil is coming from that direction. Although it doesn't make sense.”
“What do you mean?” Sango asked.
“My senses are not as good as Kagome's but I can feel the evil nonetheless. It is similar to Muramasa's but it is different.”
Shippo called from the trees pointing. “I can see them!”
Sango and Miroku looked back at where Shippo had pointed. Sango gasped and Miroku nearly dropped his staff. “Those are… soldiers?” Sango asked. “But they're—”
Miroku gulped audibly. “Each one carries an evil akin to Muramasa's although not as strong.” He sighed. “Maybe we should have gone with Inuyasha but I guess it's too late now.”
Sango set her boomerang to throw. “Can it Monk. You're talking like we've already lost. We can beat these guys.”
Miroku nodded as they got closer. “Sango, in the unlikely event that we don't make it out of this alive… I have to say—”
“I said don't talk like that. We'll be fine.” She said and stretched her arm back. “Here they come!” She let it fly. The huge boomerang tore through the hordes of evil soldiers. Those who were hit were torn to shreds while the others picked up their pace slightly.
Within a few moments, the army had begun to charge. Miroku readied his staff as Sango caught her returning boomerang. “Well this… ought to be interesting.”
