Chapter 2 – Loss

The lights were brilliant. Blue and white sparkled past Kagome’s face as she dove, in hand with Inuyasha, down the Bone Eaters Well. Soon, the lights pushed them through a time portal, which transported the two into the Feudal Era. “Come on, we can’t waste any time,” Inuyasha said without looking to Kagome.

“Alright,” Kagome held no argument. She hadn’t since Inuyasha told her about the power greater than Naraku. It was to frightening to argue about.

They had left in a hurry, Kagome left her books and packed her bag full of supplies and they were off.

Inuyasha said nothing as he carried Kagome on his back while running soundlessly through the forest to meet with the others. Kagome didn’t find the right words either. The sky, as always, was perfectly clear blue. It had not yet been tainted by human innovation. Trees were tall and left unchecked, free to grow as they pleased.

When they arrived, all could feel the same thick fear in the air. No one wanted to except the fact that anyone was stronger than Naraku. Sango held Kirara in her arms, and Shippo sat securely on top of a tre stump. “It’s not possible,” Miroku finally spoke up, his eyes closed so he could think “If Naraku were truly dead then my Wind Tunnel curse would have ended. But it’s still in my hand, that means that he has to be alive,”

“Puh, That’s exactly what I thought.” Inuyasha was sitting cross-legged with his arms tightly crossed, “There’s no way some demon could just come along and destroy Naraku,” Inuyasha pushed himself off the ground, slowly raising him to his feet. Then, as if to impress, he swung his Tetsusaiga onto his shoulder and began to walk toward the nearest forest. “Then it’s settled. The rumors are false and there is no one besides Naraku controlling demons to kill us.”

Just then, as if irony were listening to the whole conversation, a large spike flew towards Inuyasha and connected with his shoulder. It exploded through his flesh, blood spraying on the ground like thick, crimson rain. A gasp was caught in Kagome’s throat, her eyes widened in the horror.

Inuyasha screamed and fell back slowly, dropping his sword out of pain and shock. His other arm reached over to the wound, and the spike sticking out of it like an obelisk covered in a bright red paint, and gripped it tightly. His screams converted to low growls. Blood covered his hand and his clothes.

Kagome ran toward the injured half-demon, “Kagome no!” Miroku shouted, extending a hand toward her. She froze, an arm reaching out for Inuyasha. “There is a demon around, it’s dangerous.” Miroku shouted while running forward defend the young woman. Sango was trailing up behind him, Kirara leaped from her arms and exploded into a swirl of flames. She landed as a much larger cat with flames covering her feet and tail.

Inuyasha pushed himself off the ground with his good arm, his muscles screaming at him in protest. He was shaking from the pain as he finally made it to his feet. The change in position caused blood to pour out of his shoulder in a thick, short-lived stream. Kagome’s hands covered her mouth to hold in a cry.

“S-Stay back, Kagome…” Inuyasha choked on the words, the lack of air in his lungs made speaking difficult. He staggered and reached down to pick up his Tetsusaiga. Somehow, he managed to lift it off the ground and prop it on his shoulder. "Damn it all..." His wounded arm reached up to the spike, his fingers tightly wrapped around it. Blood squeezed between his fingers and trailed down the back of his hand in thin lines of red. Kagome looked away, knowing what he was about to do.

Inuyasha’s screams filled Kagome’s head, she didn’t have to look to know Inuyasha had pulled the spike out of his body. The blood that the spike was holding in place now flowed freely. Being a half-demon, Inuyasha could take such abuse and still be able to fight. He’s had worse happen to him.

“So… You are Inuyasha?” A deep, cold voice filled the air around them, thick with power and hate. It walked out from behind a tree, he was eleven feet tall and was covered in jagged rock-like spikes. Obviously, he had the ability to fire them out of his body. His face was long like a jackal’s but covered by the same rock-like substance that his spikes were made of. He had two pairs of arms, each had five long, clawed fingers. His legs were those of a dog standing erect. Each were pure flesh and not protected.

“You may have gotten a cheap shot in, but if you think that that will take me down…” Inuyasha began to charge the demon recklessly, his Tetsusaiga ready to swing, “Then you got another thing coming!” With that shout Inuyasha took to the air in a leap, his Tetsusaiga poised on his shoulder. “WIND SCAR!” Obviously, he’s pissed.

The Tetesusaiga was surrounded by razor winds holding in the power of both demonic auras present, then swung to release the energy in the form of five rows of raw power that tore through the earth under it. The demon stared at the blast for a moment, then moved with blinding speed out of its path. He laughed maniacally at the pitiful attempt to strike him down, and fired off two spikes from an outstretched arm. Inuyasha quickly rose his sword and blocked the spikes with a loud scraping of steal against rock.

“Not bad half breed.” the demon spoke, “But you stand no chance against the jackal demon, Naratutsu.”

“Everyone stand back, I’ll use my Wind Tunnel.” Miroku began as he grabbed his beads and began to open his void.

“Wait Miroku!” Shippo shouted, while pointing to the sky. “Naraku’s poisonous insects!”

The swarm was a like a black cloud moving at demonic speeds toward the battle scene. More proof that Naraku was indeed still among the living. The swarm would mean death for Miroku if he were to open his Wind Tunnel now. A trick Naraku had become known for.

“Hmf, I can take care of this guy no problem.” Inuyasha added his usual cocky statement, coupled with the cracking of his fingers. Then, plunging his free hand into his wound, Inuyasha readied himself to unleash a powerful attack. He slashed the empty air and, by some means of demonic power, created a wave of razor - “Blades of Blood!”

The demon was distracted by the self-multilation and caught the attack as it whirled toward him. Many blades had already done their damage before Naratutsu could get his arms up in defense. "You fucking Half-Breed!" The demon shouted as the blades slashed away at his arms. The force pushed him back and left crimson scratches over his entire body. Naratutsu's arms twitched from the pain, the blades had done their job.

Inuyasha wasted no more time. He was now rushing the demon, his sword trailing close behind. The demon looked up seconds to late. He raised his claws in attack, and leaped at Inuyasha, who was already swinging his sword.

“Ahhh! DIE!” Inuyasha cried with the effort put into his attack. A separate shout of the demon echoed and was cut off suddenly. Inuyasha landed, one knee and one arm catching his weight, the blood stained sword rested lightly on his shoulder.

Naratutsu landed after flat on his face, tounge hanging out of his wide open mouth. His lower half landed after him, thudding on the ground… A dead weight. Intestines seeped out of the top half like wet noodles, what seemed to be a stomach lay on the ground beside him. Blood soaked into the grass and slowly the air filled with the smell of death.

Kagome ran over to Inuyasha, the danger apparently gone. She landed on her knees, and into Inuyasha's arms, in more of a fall than anything else due to the fact that she never slowed her running. "Inuyasha are you alright?" She asked with batted breath, hoping that he would recover. She knew he would but she always gets worried.

Inuyasha gripped his wound and growled. "I'll be fine. Guy wasn't -that- strong." The ego of the half dog demon knows no ends...

"You are so strong Inuyasha..." The voice of evil echoed through the air, making it thick with malice. But the voice did not belong to Naraku... I was something else. "It's time you meet with your end... Good bye, Inuyasha..." The voice faded, the air slowly becoming pure again. But the silence was not long-lived, an ominous wind began to blow through the trees and surround Inuyasha and his allies...

The edges of the horizon exploded with demons. Thousands upon thousands of blood-thirsty demons. Every one of them rushing at the group. Shock filled the hearts and minds of Inuyasha, Kagome, Miroku, Sango, and Shippo has the hoard came down on them. Inuyasha stepped forward and glared at the crowd. "Wind Scar!" He shouted as he unleashed the power of the Tetsusaiga on the cloud of demons. One hundred parished, but that left still thousands more... Inuyasha looked back to Kagome, his eyes filled with an emmotion that could only be called love. He knew it was the end. The end of all of them.

Then a vortex opened and began to pull all the demons toward it's empy portal. Miroku had opened his Wind Tunnel. "Everyone down!" He shouted as he spun to take in more demons that were approaching from the south. The insects too were drawn in... Miroku began to weaken as they filled him with a demonic poison. His eyes closed and his body shook, but he did not stop his Wind Tunnel.

"Miroku!" Sango shouted with tears filling her eyes from the horror before her. Miroku knew that it was either him or all of them. He made a choise. Death.

The sky was emptied... The sound of wind filled the silence created by the Wind Tunnel. Miroku lay on the ground, still holding on to his wrist. He didn't move, not even a twitch. Sango was on her knees beside him. Water flowed between her fingers as she covered her face with her hands. Kagome stared blankly at the scene. Inuyasha stood, his eyes filled with regret. Shippo's eyes became moist, and tears bubbled up in the corners. "Miroku..." All of them said at different times with different levels of pain. Sango's pain was the worst, she loved him. And she never told him how she felt.

Kagome walked slowly over to Sango, Inuyasha was close behind. Kagome bent down to Miroku and held out her hand to his neck. She placed her fingers gently to his throat... "He's alive!" Her voice was filled with surprise and joy.

Sango, looked up suddenly. The tears slowed and she fell forward on top of Miroku, hugging him tightly. "Oh Miroku you idiot... What were you thinking?" The words came out choaked on sobs.

"We have to get him to Kaede's village." Kagome stepped forward and put her hand on Sango's shoulder to comfort her. She then looked back to Inuyasha, serious as she could be while staying compassionate "Inuyasha, grab Miroku. Me and Sango will follow on Kirara."

Inuyasha nodded and lifted Sango off of Miroku. Then, he picked up Miroku and set him on his back. Normally, he would have protested if the situation wasn't so serious. Now he just did as told and ran off carrying Miroku with him.

Kagome slowly lifted Sango to her feet, the woman was still lazy with grief. Shippo bounced up on top of Kirara and looked around the clearing. "Kagome, hurry. Those demon's might still be out here." The fox chiled said with fear building up in the back of his throat.

"I'm coming Shippo." Kagome said as Sango slowly lifted herself on top of Kirara. She was slowly becoming more aware.

"Let's go...We have to make sure Miroku survives." Sango held her hand out and for Kagome. She took it and leaped onto Kirara's back. "Let's go Kirara." And with that the two-tailed fire cat took to the air in the direction of Kaede's village.

"He's going to live... but yee got him here just in time. A little longer and he would not be so lucky." Lady Kaede spoke while still applying her medicine to Miroku. Kagome, Sango, Inuyasha, and Shippo watched as she worked on the monk. It had been two hours of healing on Kaede's part, but she had dealt with this poison before and that made it easier.

The candle light burned brightly. It's shadows danced with the flame, giving the walls an erie livlyness to them. Kagome stared into nothing as she sat with her knees tight to her chest and her arms holding them in place. She rocked slowly back and forth. Thoughts jumpped around in her mind. She couldn't take it anymore. "I'm leaving..." she said as she stood in one quick motion.

They all turned to look at her. Inuyasha took one step forward, "What are you talking about? You just got here." His voice was back to normal. It was an accusing tone.

"I'm leaving. I'm not safe to be around. Only when I left did the demons stop coming." Kagome's eyes filled with tears, but they did not yet fall. She held them with all her might. "I want to live a normal life. And I'm not going to get you killed."

Inuyasha took another step forward, finally seeing the seriousness of the situation he changed back to comforting. "Kagome, this isn't your fault." He reached out to touch her on the arm, but she hit his hand away.

"Don't touch me, I'm not safe." She shouted, the tears flying from her eyes now. "I'm going and I'm not coming back." She turned to leave, but stopped suddenly. She reached into her shirt and pulled the bottle of jewel shards... "I'm not going to give you a reason to come get me." Sobs made her words broken, but understandable. She dropped the bottle where she stood and started walking again. "Bye...Inuyasha."

"Fine! Go! I'll do just fine on my own. I'm tired of saving you anyway." Inuyasha shouted to her while crossing his arms and slightly turning away from her in defense. He always got too heated at the wrong times.

Kagome disappeared from the cabin... She ran the whole way to the well and didn't hesitate to jump into it.

*BEEP BEEP BEEP* The alarm in Kagome's room sounded. Kagome lay in her bed, already awake. She woke up at around 5:00 in the morning. She couldn't sleep well all night and had cried the night away. She already missed Inuyasha but was not going back. She couldn't. Kagome stared at her clock until her brother opened the door and shouted at her to at least make it stop beeping. She hit it once and the sound stopped suddenly. More tears fell onto her pillow...

"Miss Kagome... What is wrong?" Kai, Kagome's teacher, put his arm on her shoulder as she lay with her face buried in her arms at her desk. Suddenly she felt much better. The warth of his touch was filling her heart. She sat up and looked into his beautiful golden eyes. They reminded her of HIS eyes... but no, these were better. Softer. Richer. Warmer... She smiled at Kai, her eyes lighting up quickly. Kai whipped her tears away and smile brightly at her. "Good, you're feeling better. Well then, let's get back to what we were talking about class." He went on like a normal teacher, but he wasn't normal. He was perfect. Kagome could get used to staying home from now on...
