Chapter 4 - “It begins”
“You are taking me where?” Kai asked sounding quite uncertain of what Kagome was asking him to do.
“The Feudal Era. This well takes me back and forth through time so I can help Inuyasha here with fixing the Shikon Jewel.” Kagome was trying to sound as convincing as possible. Hoping Kai would not take her for insane. The man just found out that he is a Half Demon, not much that he wont believe at the moment, but Kagome was worried none the less.
“The jewel that -you- broke.” Inuyasha snapped. The Half Dog had been furious since Kai pushed him back with his mere energy. His pride was injured and that means worse pain for him than any injury.
“Look, we stopped pointing fingers a long time ago, what is wrong with you?” Kagome snapped back with just as much fury as Inuyasha. She, too, was not very happy.
“Nuthin’ I’m just letting the guy know.”
“That wasn’t what you were doing and you know it.”
“Look, he’s not going to be able to pass through anyway so why don’t we just get it over with.”
Kagome’s anger swelled and she tried holding it in by closing her eyes and shaking her fist, an anger mark appearing on her left temple. Kai stepped closer to Kagome. Trying to calm her, he put a hand on her shoulder... She exploded at Inuyasha, “He-will-too-you-big-jerk-now-get-in-the-well! SIT!” Kagome screamed in one long breath.
A light shone on Inuyasha’s necklace and pulled him downward. Since he had been on the edge of the well, he was sent down into the darkness and disappeared . His fall was softened by a brilliant light that symbolized Inuyasha making through to the other side.
“Wow. It worked.” Kai said staring down the well. “I guess everything you have told me is true...” Kai sounded disappointed, was the fact that he was not human getting to him? Was there just something about being a half-breed that made one hate themselves? Kai turned to face Kagome, his eyes held tiny reflections of fear deep within them. “So... So what does this mean for me?”
Kagome was frozen by the question. She did not have the answer. Could Kai continue to live here as he is? Could he live in the Feudal Era as a despised half demon? She just didn’t know. But what she did know was disturbing to her. She knew she wanted Kai there with her. She could not explain these feelings. Nor could she explain their origin. “I don’t know, Kai.”
Kai knew not to ask deeper. He could see the pain Kagome was feeling with that one question. He looked back down into the bowels of the well. A breath escaped his lips, one he had not known he was holding. Kai put one leg up on the edge of the well, paused, then fully stood. He looked back at Kagome a second before leaping off the edge, downward into the darkness...
Lights like none Kai had ever seen passed by, as did the years. Kai did not seem to look all to amazed, however. He stared straight with a determination burning in his eyes. When all the colors faded he was at the bottom of a younger well. He looked up. A blinding square of light waited for him at the top. Inuyasha’s face moved into sight, looking down on Kai. He did not look very pleased with Kai’s success.
When all of them had made it through the well, they proceeded to Lady Kaede’s village. Kai kept a look of amazement the entire time, this world was amazing to him. His amazement was coupled with a large grin, one that Kai made look perfect.
“Who’s this?” Miroku asked, while staring at Kai with a confused look. Shippo, Sango, and Miroku had been expecting Inuyasha to come back without Kagome, but here he was with another human.
“Kagome, why did you bring a human with you?” Shippo took a step closer to Miroku, not fully trusting this man yet.
“He does not dress like someone from this time. He almost looks like someone from your time Kagome.” Miroku never took his eyes off Kai. He continued to glare at the man, as did Inuyasha. But he did not sound accusing. His tone was still more bewildered than anything.
“He is, I brought him back with me.” Kagome added like a happy school girl. She was trilled Kai was able to travel back with her. Inuyasha crossed his arms and whipped his head away from her and shot a stare at the ground, he added a ‘Feh’.
The entire group looked shocked, “It isn’t possible for another to pass through the well... At least, I thought it wasn’t.” Miroku added.
Sango had been staring at Kai the entire time. Her look was not still one of shock, it was of lust. Kai was the most beautiful man she had ever seen, and she couldn’t help but continue to gaze upon his perfect face. Kai stared back at her with a smile...
“H-he’s not human, I-is he?” Shippo’s voice broke the silence. He was walking closer and closer to Kai, he looked stunned still; however, Shippo was not still amazed about Kai’s ability to pass through time. He was amazed that he smelled demon on him.
Kagome looked down at Shippo with the same smile still lighting her face. Kai spoke first-
“No. I guess I’m not.” He crouched down to be closer to Shippo. The fox child was more proof that Kagome was right about him. He had come to accept it. “I am... A demon.”
Miroku and Shippo gasped. Sango continued to stare, drunk with lust. The woman was feeling things no man had ever made her feel. She wasn’t even the type to feel lust. The monk had never been an object as lustful as this one. It wasn’t like her... But she liked it.
“Half demon.” Kagome added. She was reassuring Kai and the group. She knew Miroku and Sango would not take well to working along a stranger, but with a demon stranger? Not a chance.
She glanced at Sango. She was staring at Kai. Kagome felt the cold bite of jealousy, it crept down her spine like a ominous wind. Her eyes narrowed...
“Yes, thank you Kagome. I am still part human.” Kai stood up fully and smiled at Kagome, his words were soft and calming. They took affect of her. She calmed, and looked away from Sango to her Kai. Yes, her Kai. She liked the sound of that.
“It wont feel much different.” Inuyasha spat. He knew the pain of the half demon better than many. He knew Kai would come to feel it soon. He hoped, at least.
“HELP! HELP US!!!” A cry came from a man crawling toward the village. His body was bloody and cut. His left eye socket seemed to be pouring unreal amounts of blood....because there was no more eye to hold it back. One arm hung by threads of flesh and vital arteries, leaving a trail of blood.
The group turned and looked on in horror of the mangled man making his way over to them. Kagome gasped and covered her mouth with her hands and Shippo stepped back and whimpered. The others, including Kai, took on a more warrior type look. Ready and determined to fight and kill the monster responsible.
“Demons! To many!” The man chocked on his own blood as he screamed. His still remaining eye filled with tears and suddenly looked glazed over. The man’s head feel to the dirt, blood pooled around him. He was dead.
Kagome couldn’t believe it. It was her fault again. She had come back and now the demons were attacking. How was this possible? What were they after her? Were they? Was she just cursed? Kagome shook her head and tears were flung from her tightly closed eyes. “No...”
A tear hit Kai’s shoulder... He stared blankly down at it, then looked up to Kagome. “Don’t worry. This is not your fault. We will punish those responsible.” A fire Kagome had never seen flared into the man’s eyes. He was ready. Nothing could stop him. And she knew she was safe.
Inuyasha looked over at Kagome and Kai. His eyes narrowed and he held a growl deep in his throat. He used to be the one to reassure Kagome. “You just stay where you are. I’ll take care of this.” He said in arrogance.
Kai looked over to Inuyasha with a grin. “So then...” He said with a laugh underneath, “It begins.”
Inuyasha’s eyes widened. He wasn’t only shocked, he was confused. Something told him that Kai wasn’t talking about the impending battle with the demons. No. He was talking about something completely different...
The fight for Kagome was on.
