Chapter Five
“If I kill him, that'll take you away from him.”
Kagome gasped, and clung to Inuyasha's haori.
Inuyasha just growled at the wolf, brandished Tetsusaiga, and muttered “Try it.” Under his breath, then turned to Kagome. “Go back to Sango and Miroku.”
She paused, wanting to stay, but thought better of it. She nodded, and ran back to her friends.
Kouga lunged at the Hanyou at full speed, and Inuyasha wasn't able to get out of the way in time. Kouga's claws managed to graze Inuyasha's left arm enough to draw blood.
`Damn, he's way faster than me.' He thought before running at Kouga, and swinging Tetsusaiga. Kouga easily jumped out of the way, and managed to land a punch on Inuyasha's face.
Kagome cringed, and wished Kouga would just let things go. She didn't want either one of them injured, and she knew full well that this was just playtime for both of them.
After a few more insignificant punches, kicks, and swings of the sword both fighters were growing annoyed with playing around. They started going after each other with more ferocity until Kouga managed to get his claws in Inuyasha's gut.
“Inuyasha!” Kagome yelled and started to run towards the fallen Hanyou. Miroku held her back, and gestured to the `battlefield'.
Inuyasha got back to his feet, snarled, and held the Tetsusaiga in front of him. `Oh God, he's going to use Kaze no Kizu!'
“INUYASHA STOP! Don't kill him!”
“Why the hell not! He deserves it!”
“No, he doesn't. He's delusional” she added with a glare in Kouga's direction “but not evil.”
“Well what do you suggest! It's not like he's exactly open to reasoning!”
Kouga decided to step in. “I'll reason with you, as long as I end up with Kagome.”
“NO!” Both she and Inuyasha yelled at the same time. They looked at each other briefly and blushed.
“Well then, there's no choice!” Kouga said before charging at the Hanyou.
“STOP!” Kagome yelled, and ran in front of Inuyasha to shield him.
Kouga instantly stopped his attack. “What are you doing? Get out of the way! The sooner I kill Dog-Turd here, the sooner we can get out of here!”
“Kouga! Just get the HELL out of here! I do not want you! I will never accept you! I would sooner kill myself than be with you! Leave before I rethink my decision on letting Inuyasha kill you!” Kagome erupted.
Everyone in the area looked stunned, including Kagome. `Did I really say that…?' she wondered briefly.
Kouga growled at her. “This is not over. I'll come back when you've realized who's better for you!”
`I already have' she thought, but settled for saying “Don't bother.” This would embarrass less people/hanyous.
Kouga shot another evil glare at the group then sped off. As soon as he was out of sight, Kagome released a huge sigh of relief, and turned back to her friends.
Inuyasha was staring at her looking completely perplexed, Miroku looked proud, Sango looked like she was… stifling laughter? Kagome wondered why for a fleeting moment before Shippou launched himself into her arms.
“I'm glad you aren't leaving Kagome! I was so worried!” He squeaked.
Miroku chuckled, and said, “Did you really think Inuyasha would let Kagome go that easily?” with a wide smirk on his face.
Sango, Miroku and Kirara started the walk back to the village. Shippou bounded after them leaving the still perplexed hanyou and Kagome behind.
“Er, Inuyasha?” The latter asked softly. “We should probably go now.”
He turned to face Kagome. “Hm? Oh, right. Go back.” Then started after the others leaving Kagome somewhat bewildered.

Inuyasha walked silently in front of the group. He was lost in thought. Miroku had made a wisecrack about this being such a rare occurrence, but without any response he had quickly given up.
`She said that nothing Kouga could say or do would take her away from me. Not the group, not the mission, but me. I'm probably over-analyzing this, right?'
`No, you're not. She obviously likes you, and you like her, so - '
`I don't like her! Why would I? No. Ack, why am I arguing with myself? I've gone completely insane.'
`Whatever, you like her. You probably even love her, you just need to stop being so dense and realize it.'
Inuyasha shook his head and tried to clear his mind.
Kagome eyed the hanyou suspiciously. He had been acting strange since the fight with Kouga ended. Was he worried about her?
`He knows I won't go with him, right? I screamed it out today, so he'd have to be really dense not to know.'
`It's Inuyasha. He probably doesn't know.'
`Hey!'
She stopped before she continued the dispute.
`I've gone completely insane.' She thought before deciding to break the silence.
“When do you think we'll get back to the village?”
“Well,” Miroku supplied “It took roughly 4 hours to get there, it's half past two in the afternoon now and we've been traveling for almost an hour now. So we should get back by 6-ish. Long before sundown judging by the summer weather pattern.” He stated matter-of-factly.
“You could have just said `six', Miroku.” Shippou spoke in a slightly condescending tone.
“I like to be precise.” The monk replied.
“Well, technically it wasn't precise. You don't know for a fact when we'll get there, so it couldn't have been.”
“Yes Sango, but I was precise with how I arrived at my answer.”
“That's not precise, just annoying and confusing!” Shippou put in.
“It all depends on your definition of precise.”
“Would you all stop saying `precise' back there!” A very annoyed half demon shouted back at his bickering companions.
“Feeling a bit grumpy, Inuyasha?” Miroku said with a smile.
“Do you have a death wish, Monk?”
“Merely stating the truth. You have been pensive ever since our encounter with Kouga, and I was merely concerned for your state of mind.”
“You saying you think I'm insane because I'm thinking?”
Miroku was about to deny this claim before he analyzed his words. “Well, yes, I guess so.”
Kagome giggled.
Inuyasha merely growled and continued to think.
A few minutes passed in awkward silence.
“Kagome, why's the sky blue?” Shippou piped up.
Kagome was taken aback by the completely random question. “Er… what makes you ask that?”
“Well, I was wondering what Inuyasha might be thinking so hard about. I started thinking about the sky. Then I realized that I really have no idea why it's blue.”
“Maybe I shouldn't bring you back any more sugary things.”
“But I'm just curious!” The kit whined.
“Well, I don't know exactly. It's something about the matter in the sky and how it absorbs and reflects colour… along those lines anyways. I remember my science teacher talking about it but I've been away too much to really know.”
“Kagome, are you sad we take you away from your life?” Shippou asked with concern.
Kagome looked down to his with kind eyes before scooping him into her arms. “No.” She said simply before adding “I enjoy it here, and I enjoy being around you guys even more.”
Shippou beamed.
Inuyasha turned his head to glance at Kagome.
She noticed. “Inuyasha?”
“Nothing.”
Kagome looked at him suspiciously before shrugging and absentmindedly stroking Shippou's head.
A/N: Oh, the 'why is the sky blue' thing? Well I was TOTALLY drawing a blank as to what to write next so I asked my friend for a random word and she said 'blue'. Well, after 'injection' which I didn't think was entirely appropriate. So sorry if it seems completely random. That's only because it is.
