CHAPTER 5 KAORU THE HORSE DEMON
Inuyasha was so intent on finding the demon with the shard that he left Kagome and the others behind. Why should they have to come along? He could take care of this on his own, he thought.
Inuyasha reached a clearing in the woods that was so strange it made him stop. The clearing was small. There were no bushes, no flowers, no trees, no anything. There was only grass, but the grass was dead. Come to think of it, the whole place looked dead. Strangest of all, there was plenty of sunlight over the forest but none shown in the clearing. The sky was a perfect blue with one lonely cloud far off in the distance. Yet the clearing looked as if the sun had forgotten about it long ago.
Inuyasha looked around but didn't see anything. He could smell something, though.
"Come on out. I know you're here," Inuyasha said quietly.
He was confident that he could handle whatever this was, but he wasn't about to let his guard down. Whatever he was dealing with here had a Shikon Jewel Shard. That meant it was going to be bigger and badder than any normal demon.
"Inuyasha!" Kagome yelled as she ran up to him closely followed by the others.
"Keh. Took you long enough. I'd have the jewel shard by now if this thing would show it's face."
"We got here as quick as we could, okay! Not all of us a-"
"SSHH!" Sango said. "I hear something."
Kagome and the others listened. Inuyasha tilted his head upward to get a good smell of the air around them.
"THERE!" Miroku pointed to the far corner of the clearing.
The bushes at the far corner of the clearing rustled making Inuyasha draw his sword and what looked like a small pony came out into the clearing. It was a beautiful chestnut color with a mane the color of honey. It quietly began to graze on the dead grass below it's feet. It seemed not to notice that it was no longer alone.
"It looks like just a pony," Kagome said.
"That's no pony. It reeks of human blood. I doubt any pony would have reason to smell as such." Inuyasha said making his way into the clearing. Miroku grabbed his arm.
"Let's not be rash. We don't know what we're dealing with here."
Inuyasha pulled his arm free.
"It doesn't matter. Cause if that thing has a jewel shard, then I'm goin' after it." He started again for the clearing and the pony.
Miroku shook his head and followed with the others.
Now the pony seemed to notice them. It stood there for a moment and then trotted over to the center of the clearing appearing amazingly calm. Once in the center of the clearing, the pony stopped and stared at the approaching newcomers. It doesn't look worried or tense at all, Kagome thought. That's strange in itself. Normally a pony would be fidgety by the approach of humans and especially at the smell of demons.
"Keh. You're not foolin' anyone. Why don't you just show yourself so we can kill you and move on?!"
The pony smiled. The smile made Kagome cringe behind Inuyasha. There was something about it that made Kagome's skin crawl.
"What the Hell are you smiln' about?" Inuyasha asked raising his sword.
Before Inuyasha could do anything more, the pony disappeared into a cloud of smoke. When the smoke cleared the pony wasn't there anymore. Where the pony once stood, now there was a hideous demon that towered over Inuyasha and the rest of them. He had the body of a man and the face of a horse. The face was twisted in such a way that his teeth constantly shown and his eyes shown with such a hate and fury that Kagome's blood froze. She stepped a little further behind Inuyasha.
"Keh. That's more like it. Say hello to my Tetsuiga!" Inuyasha lunged forward bringing his sword down to where the Horse Demon stood but he was no longer there.
"What the?" Inuyasha quarried, looking around.
"YOU CANNOT HARM ME. I AM KAORU THE HORSE DEMON. I AM FAR MORE POWERFUL THAN YOU CAN IMAGINE. YOU WILL BECOME MORE FOOD FOR MY HOME."
The voice came from everywhere but the demon, Kaoru, appeared right in front of them once again. Inuyasha brought his left arm back to protect Kagome.
"What do you mean ‘food for your home?' Make sense would ya!"
"Inuyasha," Miroku interrupted. "The grass. The aura around the grass it's........"
Inuyasha looked down. The grass wasn't dead after all. It just looked like it because it was grey. It smelled like............Inuyasha couldn't quite put his finger on it. He knew he didn't like it, though.
"YOUR SOULS. YOUR SOULS WILL FEED THE GRASS THAT FEEDS ME. MAKING ME EVEN MORE POWERFUL. DIE NOW."
Now Inuyasha knew what that smell was. It was the same smell that Kikyo gave off. The smell of dead souls.
Kaoru looked directly at Kagome. Kagome tensed noticeably and then went limp.
"Kagome!" Inuyasha caught her before she could hit the ground.
"Huriaktsu!" Sango's weapon sliced through the air hitting Kaoru in his left flank and splitting it open.
"Got em'!" Shippo shouted triumphantly.
Kaoru only laughed. He looked down at his gaping wound and watched it close up before them all.
"YOU CANNOT KILL ME. YOU CANNOT SO MUCH AS HARM ME. I AM INVINCIBLE!"
Inuyasha laid the unconciouse Kagome down and covered her with the cloth of the Fire Rat.
"Miroku, watch her," He said, turning to face Kaoru.
"I don't know what your thinkin' but I ain't met a demon yet that I couldn't kill!" Inuyasha shouted. He lunged toward Kaoru.
"IRON REAVER SOUL STEALER!"
Kaoru only stood there and let Inuyasha hit him with the otherwise lethal blow. It struck him right below the left ear stripping the spot of five huge strips of flesh. All of which quickly closed back up. Kaoru brought up his fist, knocking Inuyasha to the ground.
"Aahh!" Inuyasha shouted. He dragged himself up off the ground and stood defiantly in front of Kaoru.
"All right. You asked for it..................WIND SCAR!"
Inuyasha brought his Tetsuiga down bringing up a wave of destruction right at the horse demon. The wave hit Kaoru directly, knocking him back.
"Keh. That did it," Inuyasha said proudly.
"No it didn't," Shippo said pointing to where Kaoru once again stood.
"HE HE HE HE HE! I DON'T DIE SO EASILY, NICE TRY BUT YOU.............................."
Kaoru looked down at the gaping hole in his chest. Looking up he could see the now conscious Kagome kneeling with her bow in her left hand and her right hand held back from the arrow's release. She glared at the horse demon with a knowing look. She still dawned the red Kimono, making her look even more fierce.
"Now you can kill him, Inuyasha. The dead souls have been set fee!" Kagome yelled.
Looking back at Kaoru, Inuyasha could now see the souls floating upward at a rapid rate. He took the opportunity and let loose another wave of destruction.
"WIND SCAR!"
