CHAPTER 6 SIZE DOESN'T MATTER
"I don't' believe this!" Inuyasha yelled while pacing back and forth.
All that and all they got was one teen, tiny, barely existent jewel shard. Inuyasha was happy with any shard that they got, but this was kinda stupid.
"This damn thing is a jewel speck!" He continued to rant.
"Now, Inuyasha. We have to have all of the jewel shards to restore it to whole again. No matter how small they are." Miroku said.
That was true. If he was going to become a full demon, he would have to have the jewel back to it's original form. So maybe it wasn't a total waste of time. He went over to his spot on the ground by Kagome and just watched the fire. It was really quiet and Inuyasha was quite enjoying the change. Shippo was off chasing some kind of flashing bug & Kagome was reading one of her text books with a rather distressed look on her face. Miroku was watching the fire & Sango was off in the distance petting Kirara and watching the stars.
"Does anyone know what the square root of 81 is?" Kagome whined.
"What's a square root?" Inuyasha asked.
"Huh...........never mind." Kagome closed the book and put it back in her backpack. From there she got up and walked over to where Sango was and sat down beside her. Sango didn't even look over. She was too deep in thought. Kagome decided not to disturb her. She just looked up at the stars and sat quietly.
Inuayasha had been looking at the fire up until Kagome spoke. Now he was watching her. He couldn't make up his mind about her. He knew that he had feelings for her but couldn't make up his mind what those feelings were. He cared for her a lot, he knew that but at the same time she drove him NUTS!
Still, she did look kinda pretty by the light of the fire. Well, prettier.
"Whatcha lookin at, Inuyasha?" Miroku asked with a smile.
Inuyasha quickly looked away. He said nothing because he could think of nothing to say. If he yelled then Kagome would notice and ask what all the fuss was about. It would probably end up with her giving him a ‘SIT!'
"Inuyasha?" Miroku pushed.
"I wasn't lookin at anything, Monk." Inuyasha had a threatening look on his face and Miroku saw it. Better not to push him too far, he thought.
Kagome could hear the whole thing. Who did he think he was kidding? She knew he was looking at her. Probably mad over something I did that he thought was stupid, she thought. Maybe I did something while brushing my hair tonight or something like that. It was always something with him. Kagome sometimes thought that Inuyasha thought she was just a stupid little girl. Well, let him think that, Kagome thought.
"I don't care, anyway." She said under her breath.
"Huh? What was that, Kagome?" Sango asked.
"What?"
"You said something just then."
"I did? Huh. Just thinking out loud, I guess."
Sango didn't push it. She knew that Kagome had a lot on her mind and thought it best to just let her sort through it. She looked out over the horizon. They were sitting close to the edge of a rather high cliff. She couldn't see much below them because of all the trees but she thought she could see the hint of a stream shining in the moon light. Sango wondered where Kohaku was right then. I hope he's safe, she thought.
"Kagome!" Shippo came running up to them with his hands cupped together.
"I got one, Kagome!" Shippo opened his hand just a bit so that they could see the little firefly within.
"That's great, Shippo. Now what are you gonna do with it?" Kagome asked.
"I don't know." Shippo shrugged.
"Why don't you let it go? Then you can go catch another one." Kagome suggested.
"Okay!" Shippo rushed his hands up and open and the little firefly flew away quickly. Shippo was off in a flash to catch another firefly.
"He really is innocent, isn't he." Sango said.
"Yeah," Kagome smiled. "He is so good at being grown up when he has to, that I sometimes forget that he is really just a kid yet."
Meanwhile, across the fire. Inuyasha was sleeping soundly. Miroku had returned to meditating.
"Well, I'm off to bed. We have a lot of walking to do tomorrow." Sango said as she got up with Kirara. She went over to her little spot, laid down and closed her eyes. She was asleep within minutes.
Kagome got up and went over to sit by Miroku. He was so still that Kagome was almost too afraid to speak to him for fear she would startle him. Just when she decided maybe it would be best if she went to bed also, Miroku opened his eyes, blinked and looked over at her.
"Kagome, I'm sorry I didn't hear you come over."
"It's okay. I didn't want to bother you. I just wasn't ready to go to sleep yet."
"I see. Is something wrong?"
Kagome looked down at her feet. She wanted to ask Miroku what Inuyasha was mad at her about but she didn't want to let him know that she cared. Maybe it would be better to just go to bed after all, she thought.
"No. Not really. Well, I guess I'll go ahead and go to bed. We have a long day tomo...."
"You want to know what's going on with Inuyasha, don't you?"
"Ummm.......Well, yeah I guess. He's mad at me again isn't he? I know he is, you don't have to cover for him. Was it the math question?"
"Actually, quite the contrary. He's not mad at you. He was staring at you is all."
"Huh?! Staring at me?! Why?!"
"Oh, come on, Kagome. You know why." Miroku rolled his eyes.
"No, I don't!......At least, I don't think I do. Well, maybe I do. I don't know." Kagome grabbed two handfuls of her hair and pulled. Not too hard but just hard enough.
"Kagome, you know how he feels about you."
She didn't know what to say. She knew how she felt about him, but she had no idea how he felt about her. She did know that she would like to find out.
"Why don't you tell me, Miroku. He sure as Hell isn't gonna."
Miroku suddenly looked uneasy.
"I don't know that I should but............Okay, I guess you have a right to know. Inuyasha likes you...No more than that. His world revolves around you. I guess he lo........"
"Don't say it. If he's not going to say it then I don't want to hear it."
Miroku sat silent for a moment. He thought about this and then nodded.
"Okay, then."
