Chapter 8:
Eleven Months Later ~*~*~
"Come on Kagome, it's time."
"Hold on, I am almost done." Kagome finished typing the last paragraph she was working on and closed her lap top - a birthday gift sent from her mother.
"Thank you so much Angy. I can't even begin to tell you how much you've helped me through this year."
"You are doing the right thing." Kagome hugged her friend, and roommate.
"Okay. I'll call you a lot, and I'll write and e-mail, and oh give me another hug." Angela laughed at her friend and squeezed her tightly.
"Get on the plane." Angy hid a tear that welled up in her eye and Kagome fought back the tears that she didn't want to shed.
"Bye Angy."
"Bye Kagome."

"Hey Sesshomaru. I'm on my way home. Kagome's plane just left. I should be home a few hours after her, if I can get a ticket on the next plane out. I'll call you when I get into town. Tell Shippo I said hi." Inuyasha hung up the phone and walked up to the counter.
"Hey, one ticket, one way to Japan. Preferable somewhere around Tokyo, or Kyoto."
"I am sorry sir. The next plane leaves in an hour and it is booked. I can get you one for hmm, two days is the best I can do."
"Is there a stand by or something?" he asked the girl.
"I could put you on standby, but on such short notice it is doubtful anyone will cancel."
"Standby is fine with me. I'll wait." Inuyasha left the counter and sat on the cold steel bench.
The plane left two hours later, no one gave up there ticket. Inuyasha bought one for two days later and sat on the same steel bench, waiting.

"Kagome!" everyone ran up to her and hugged her closely. "Oh my god, you look so great, did you cut your hair? It looks amazing." Kagome smiled, she had cut her hair two months ago but she guessed it was still rather short.
"Oh you poor thing, you look starved, lets get you something to eat." Everyone followed Mrs. Higarashi back into the house.
Yuki, Eri, Souta, and Kagome talked animatedly about their lives since she left. They couldn't believe she had left them for a whole year. Everything seemed surreal to Kagome, like the things she thought mattered most, suddenly didn't. Not to say her friends and family didn't matter, but the petty issues of her high school life seemed too misplaced. Kagome listened with forced attention as Yuki and Eri told her all about their new boyfriends. Souta blushed when Mrs. Higarashi mentioned his girlfriend.
"Where is Grandpa?" Kagome asked after a brief silence.
"He wasn't feeling well. He went to lay down."
"I am going to go see if he is awake, I want to say hi to him. I'll be right back."
Kagome walked up the stairs and down the hall to her grandfather's bedroom. Kagome knelt beside his bed, and his eye's opened lazily.
"Ah, hello Kagome." he said, his voice was strained.
"Hey grandpa. How are you?"
"It is time. But I'll wait." Kagome didn't know what he meant, but she listened. "You have to. . . accept the truth. . . I know. . . you can. . ." he closed his eye's just as lazily as he had opened them, and Kagome felt him fall asleep.
She kissed his hand and walked out to leave him in peace. Her grandfather's words echoing in her head *You have to accept the truth I know you can.*

"Hey Sesshomaru!" Inuyasha hugged his brother, "Shippo!" he repeated the process with the Kitsune.
"Inuyasha, good to see you" they said back to him.
"I haven't seen you in almost two years. That hair cut is great. Who did it?" Sesshomaru looked at his brother's hair. He was wearing the concealing charm, where is black hair would normally flow down his shoulders, there was nothing. His hair was shaved and he had only slight peach fuzz.
"Some guy in Boston." Inuyasha commented off hand.
"I haven't seen you in a year, but I missed you just as much." Shippo added.
"All right, enough mush let's go home." Inuyasha threw his suitcase into Sesshomaru's car- he had bought a new one a black Montero.
"How was Kagome's year in Boston?" Sesshomaru asked.
"She looked miserable. She smiled to her friend - yeah she only made one friend she kind of avoided people - and she laughed, but they were empty smiles, empty laughs. She rejected every date, every guy that talked to her. I couldn't stand seeing her so miserable."
"Then why did you stay so long?" Sesshomaru asked.
"Because, I didn't want to be away from her again. I was hoping one day I would see her and she would say how much she wanted to see me but she never talked about me." Inuyasha put his hand up to his head, to run through his hair. "Oh yeah, I have no hair." he laughed and sighed, "I think I sprung it on her too soon. I should have waited until she knew me better and fell in love with me, or at least trusted me more."
"Have you been beating yourself up this whole year? You are going to beat yourself into an early grave." Inuyasha laughed at his brother's concern.
"Maybe so." he commented. "Maybe so."

"I have to talk to him. I've been thinking about it for a year. I can't let it go. I have to talk to him." Kagome told her mother over a cup of tea.
"Then go to him." Kagome smiled and hugged her mother, those simple words were all the encouragement she needed.
Kagome ran down the shrine steps and jumped into the blue suburban. She drove the six miles to the apartment complex where Inuyasha last lived. "If he doesn't live there anymore then that's okay, I'll ask Sesshomaru or Shippo." Kagome said out loud to herself as she walked into the building.
§¤*~
"Excuse me. I would like to see Inuyasha, is there anyway you could page him or something. I don't have the master key and I can't get in."
"I am sorry ma'am but the family has stepped out. They should be back in a few hours. I can leave them a message or you can wait for them." The man at the front desk responded.
"Kagome?" Kagome felt butterflies as she heard her name. She recognized that voice as though she had just heard it yesterday.
"Inuyasha?" she turned around to see the man behind her. His hair was nonexistent but he was still Inuyasha. Kagome felt herself smile, but it quickly disappeared when she thought of why she was here.
"I need to talk to you." she said softly. Inuyasha nodded.
"We'll take your bags up to the house. You go on." Sesshomaru said. Inuyasha nodded and followed Kagome out the door.
They walked through the busy city streets, not speaking. Eventually Kagome stopped and sat on a bench, Inuyasha noticed for the first time that day his surroundings, they were at the park - which was ominously quiet.
"Inuyasha." she began, searching for the right words, "I don't know why I can't remember anything. But I've spent the past year rehashing the whole thing in my mind, and I want to believe you. I want to trust you, and most of all I want to get to know you. I find myself thinking of you and I don't understand why, but I want to find out. I am sorry I called you, what was it I said, psychotic?" she shook her head, "I was scared. I still am, but I want to believe you, and I'm sorry." she exhaled deeply as she finished her apology.
"Kagome." he didn't say any more. He hugged her close, she smiled and tears escaped her eyes. "Hey don't cry. It's okay." he wiped away a stray tear and smiled at the girl in front of him.
"Can you show me again?" she asked. "Can you take me through the well?"
"I can't choose where to go. The jewel does it, I can't."
"The jewel? The Shikon no Tama?"
"Mm hmm. We can try." she smiled at him and he accepted that as the answer.
"What did you do to your hair?" she asked after a time. She had been pondering it but didn't say anything.
He gave a nervous chuckle and blushed, "Does it look that bad?"
"No. It's cute. I just wouldn't have thought you would cut off your hair."
"Hai, me either. You cut yours too. It's very attractive." She blushed even more then he had.
More time passed. Inuyasha and Kagome had gone back to the apartment to get his car and were now driving to the shrine. They now stood in front of the well. "Are you sure you want to -" she nodded. "Okay." he gently grabbed her arm and jumped through the well.
"Ouch." instead of falling gracefully into the other dimension both landed hard on the rough earth.
"We can't get through. That is odd. I wonder if the Shikon no Tama messed with it." Inuyasha stood up - having fallen over when they landed - and then helped up Kagome. "Might as well go back."
"That is the strangest thing. Is there a secret to using that thing?" Kagome asked.
"The well, or the jewel? The jewel is a mystery. Only Kaede knew everything about it and even she didn't tell us everything."
"Lady Kaede. . . "
"Do you remember her?" Inuyasha looked hopeful.
"No." she replied flatly. Inuyasha exhaled with a simple 'oh'. "The restaurant! Kaede's Hut. That is where I have heard that name."
"Oh, hai, my idea. Sesshomaru and I own it."
"Cool." she sat on the ground in front of the god's tree.
"You know? This is where you and I met. I didn't know it then, but it was the most important day of my life." Kagome looked to the tree behind her. A barely visible outline - apparently of a teenage boy - seemed to appear on the tree trunk. Vines crawled around the tree, as though holding the boy in place. Kagome envisioned Inuyasha pinned to the tree with an arrow. *Had he said he was pinned there?*
"Did you say you were pinned there?"
"No, I didn't. But I was."
"I know." was all she could manage.
