Chapter 14: Caryn
"Oh you are witty." Inuyasha turned away from Kagome, "I'm going to go take a shower real quick, I smell like Kouga." Inuyasha exhagerated a shudder.
"Watch it mutt." Kouga said from behind. Inuyasha 'feh'ed and the two walked toward the male showers.
Kagome walked into the lobby and sat down on one of the bench's. *Why doesn't he believe me? Well Kagome, would you believe you? No I guess I wouldn't. Though it would be easier if he believed me. That is true, that is true.* Kagome didn't want to be there any longer. Thinking of Kikyou and how she could possibly be in Kagome's time was driving her insane. The hardship of her grandfather's death, everything was making her head crazy.
"Excuse me? Hi, I'm Kagome Higarashi, I am going to go home, if Inuyasha Tenkai asks could you just tell him I went home?"
"Of course ma'am." a short plump woman who worked the front desk smiled pleasently at her.
"Thanks." Kagome looked around quickly to make sure Inuyasha wasn't all ready out of the shower's and she walked out the door.

"See ya later Yash."
"Bye Kouga"
Inuyasha tied his shoe and stood up. His hair was dripping on the floor and made a soft splashing sound as drops would hit the tile. He looked around for a moment before realizing he didn't have his duffle-bag because he hadn't intended on fighting. Mumbling the concealing spell his appearence became human and he walked out of the toupe colored locker room into the startling white lobby.
"Kagome?" he called but no one answered. "Kag?" he called again.
"Oh Mr. Tenkai." the same plump woman beemed from behind the counter.
"Yes?"
"Ms. Higarashi said to tell you she was going to go home."
"Oh, thanks. See ya later Yolanda." Inuyasha smiled and walked out the sliding glass doors.
*I wonder why she went home. I didn't take that long. Maybe she got a headache. But why would that happen? Maybe she really did think she saw Kikyou. I bet it's just her grandfather's death that is upsetting her. Maybe I should leave her alone for a day. Or maybe if I leave her alone she'll do something crazy. But I don't want to smother her.* The more he thought the more his thoughts became contradicting and confusing. Finally giving up on his thoughts he went on instinct. He walked the fifteen blocks to Kagome's house. Normally he would have walked the ten blocks (in the other direction) to his house and then drove the twenty-five blocks to Kagome's but he wasn't thinking clearly.
Upon arriving at the appartment he looked around, for what he didn't know. He walked up to the building and then inside, up the two flights of stairs and to her door. He knocked softly, almost inaudiable.
"Coming," Kagome's angelic voice was herd from the other side.
"Hey Inuyasha." she smiled as she opened the door.
"Hey Kagome." he kissed her on the cheek. "Why did you leave? I'm sorry I took so long. Are you feeling okay? Do you need to go to the hospital? Should I leave you alone?" *So much for not smothering her*
"Sorry, no you didn't take too long, I just couldn't be in their I felt weird. I don't need medical treatment, I feel fine, you don't have to leave me alone. I guess I just felt weird about seeing Kikyou, and then she dissappeared down that hallway. It must have been my imagination but it was the weirdest thing."
"I am sorry I didn't believe you." Kagome noted how apologetic and down-right kind Inuyasha was of late. When they were together in the past, once they were 'dating' he was a lot sweeter than before but still edgy, and strong-willed and stubborn; now he just seemed. . . whipped.
"Don't worry about it. I think I'm insane too." she smiled but he didn't seem to be laughing. "You can go home, you don't have to hang out with me. I'm probably going to stay home today and watch a movie or something."
"Nah, it's all right, I don't have anything else to do." he actually did have something he could be doing; but, he chose to leave that out of conversation.
"Really, its okay. . . I'll be fine. Go home, you have a life." Kagome smiled gently.
"You are my life." Inuyasha kissed her forehead softly. "I'll call ya tomorrow okay?"
"Hai. Bye."
"Bye."

Kagome wandered about her apartment for a few minutes. She cleaned up some various papers and she vaccumed, trying to keep her mind occupied. When she was pretty sure Inuyasha wasn't coming back she grabbed her keys off the counter and walked out the door.
She drove down the busy Tokyo streets, not really concentrating on driving but more on her thoughts. Thoughts of her grandfather's message, Sesshomaru's thoughts, Inuyasha's odd kindness. Anything that had happened to her since she lost, and then regained her memories. Too many things were bugging her and she didn't know what to do. Finally arriving at her destination she parked the car and stepped out. The tall gray budiling blocked out the sun and she felt a chill as she walked to the front door in the shade.
"Hello Ms. Higarashi, is Mr. Tenkai with you?" The same woman that had helped Kagome earlier that morning was beeming from behind the counter. Kagome mentally questioned whether she ever stopped smiling.
"No he isn't. I was wondering if you could help me with something."
"I can certainly try."
"Can you tell me if you have a member registered under the name of Kikyou?"
"Last name?"
"I am not sure really. I never thought to ask." Kagome smiled sheepishly.
"Let's see." the woman typed in the name 'Kikyou' and ran a search. "No, I am sorry there is no one by that name."
"What about your staff? Could you check them for me?"
"Sure." after a few moments the woman sighed, "No, no Kikyou on the staff. Are you sure that is the girls name? Maybe she uses a different name."
"I don't think she does. Sorry to have wasted your time. Thank you. Have a great day." Kagome smiled as she began walking out the door.
"Have a lovely day miss. Stay inside, it's suppose to rain."
"Thanks."
§¤*~
"No Kikyou. . . Well, maybe I am crazy. Then again maybe she was there like I was, without a membership and not on the staff. Maybe it just wasn't her stupid. Kami Kag you are such a moron; and, I'm beginning to think you are insane. Considering you are talking to yourself yeah, insane is a good way of putting it." Kagome talked to herself as she drove back toward her apartment. She didn't really want to go home and contemplated going to her mothers.
She turned off on her mothers street and pulled into the shrine driveway. Kagome noticed that her brother's car was in the yard and she was glad she could say 'hi' to him and meet his girlfriend. She turned off the car and walked up the shrine steps. She debated knocking but she decided to just go in.
"Hello?" she called. Souta's voice could be heard from the living room. He was talking to his girlfriend by the sound of it.
Souta's voice stopped talking and then called "Hey, we're in the livingroom."
Kagome walked into the living room and noticed her mother standing by the fireplace, talking on the phone, and her brother talking to someone she couldn't see.
"Hey guys." Souta walked up and hugged her. He had just receieved the news of their grandfather's death yesterday evening and he flew back to comfort his mom and for the funeral.
"How are you taking things?" he asked sweetly.
"I'm doing better." Kagome replied.
"You haven't met Caryn yet have you?" Souta smiled, trying to lighten the situation.
"No, I haven't." Souta turned his body and motioned toward the girl sitting on the couch. Kagome looked at her for a moment before her eye's widened and her mouth dropped open.
"Oh my god. Holy shit."
"What's wrong?" Souta asked, very confused.
"Hello, Kagome? I'm Caryn." she smiled vindictively and Kagome felt weak.
"I have to go." Kagome didn't wait for anyone to ask her more questions or anything, she just ran out the door.
She drove as fast as she could, breaking just about every driving law, to get to Inuyasha's. She pulled up to the apartment building and ran to the elevator, forgetting she needed the master key. She buzzed Inuyasha's apartment and waited. When there was no answer she continued to push the call button repeatedly until the front desk thought she was going to break the button off.
"Fuck!" she walked over to the front desk and smiled. "Hi, is Inuyasha home? Or can I have a master key to get up to his apartment?"
"I am sorry I cannot give out the key. You are welcome to buzz his apartment."
"It's really, really important."
"I am sorry I cannot give out the key." he replied in a stern tone.
"Fine." Kagome walked outside. All of their cars were in the parking lot. *Where is he?. . . The Gym!* Kagome got into her car and drove to the gym. *Nope. Okay. . . fuck* She pulled out her partially charged cellphone and dialed his cell number; it lead her directly to his voice mail. She left a short message telling him to call her. She drove back to his apartment and began buzzing his apartment again.
"Is there something I can do for you?" an angry voice came back over the intercom.
"Sess? Oh thank you Kami. I need to speak to Inuyasha."
"He's not here."
"Where is he?"
"Out."
"When will he be back?"
"Later."
"Sess, I really would love it if you could help me out. This is kind of important."
"Good bye Ms. Higarashi."
"Sess!" Kagome hit the elevator many times and screamed just about every curse under the sun.
"Ma'am if you can not keep your voice down I will escort you out of the building." the man from the front desk said.
"Gomen. . . my bad. . . " Kagome stormed out of the building and sat down on a bench. Kagome called his cellphone again, this time it rang.
"Mutts cell, Kouga speaking."
"Kouga. Is Inuyasha around?"
"Nope just missed him."
"Why do you have his cell?"
"He forgot it in my car. I just dropped him off at home."
"That is impossible. I'm sitting in front of his apartment and you didn't just drop him off here." Kagome looked around to make sure she wasn't being stupid.
"Well I just dropped him off." Kouga stated; hitting himself in the forehead, even though Kagome couldn't see it.
"All right, whatever, if you see him just. . . ignore this convorsation." Kagome hung up the phone and gazed into the traffic.
*Maybe my mind was playing tricks on me. Maybe it wasn't Kikyou I saw posing as 'Caryn'. Then again my brother, mother, grandfather, no one knew what she looked like. I need Inuyasha. Why is he so hard to track down? I can handle this. . . so what if somehow Kikyou is in my time, dating my brother. I can handle this. I just need to go home and act calm and natural until I can ask Inuyasha his opinion.* Kagome stood up and walked to her car. She began driving back to her mothers.
*Why was Sess being such a dick though? I'm a little angry at him. Did he have to be so rude? He could have just said, 'Inuyasha's out, I don't know where he went'. Even if he was lying, it would have been more polite.* Kagome continued to think until her car seemed to stop itself at the shrine.
She stepped out of the car and into the house. Her mother was still on the phone and Souta and 'Caryn' were still talking.
"Hey guys, sorry to run out like that. I had a terrible headache."
"I was worried to death, I thought you were going crazy." Souta hugged his sister again and they sat down on the couch with Caryn.
"So how did you two meet? I don't really get to hear these things anymore."
"We met at a group function. Actually you know that I am majoring in theology, well I went to a seminar last summer about it and there was Caryn. We became best friends and one thing led to another, here we are, engaged." the couple smiled and Kagome returned the gesture.
"Hello Kagome."
"Hi Mom." Kagome hugged her mother. "Are you doing better?"
"No," she sighed, "But, I will get better. This is not the end of my life. I can make it through. I am so glad I have you guys."

"Hey Sess." Inuyasha walked into the kitchen and began rummaging through the refrigerator.
"Your Miko was looking for you." Sesshomaru replied.
"Oh really, what did she want?"
"I am not sure, I got rid of her as quickly as I could. You know me and my big mouth."
Inuyasha laughed, Sesshomaru did have a problem keeping secrets.
"I hope you weren't too hard on her." Inuyasha pulled a root beer out of the fridge and walked back into the living room, sitting across from his brother.
"I simply told her you were 'out' that you would be back 'later' and good bye. I tried to avoid her all together but she wouldn't stop ringing the stupid call button. I'll have to inform the front desk to change the harshness of that tone."
"Wuss." Inuyasha said. He often found it odd that the apartment had it's own cleaning service, room-service, and a front desk just to keep everything in order. It was very much like a hotel only it didn't cost nearly as much to rent there. A hotel like this would cost a normal family between three or four hundred dollars a night; the apartments were only three hundred to four hundred a month.
"Will you be going to see her?"
"She told me not to call until tomorrow. Maybe I should call her anyway." as Inuyasha reached for the phone it began to ring. "That was just creepy." he picked it up and began speaking with the person on the other line.
"Okay, thanks Kouga. Bye." he hung up the phone and looked through his pocket. "I guess I did leave my phone in his car. That sucks."
"Always forgetting things. Alzheimer's setting in?" Sesshomaru teased.
"Feh."
§¤*~
"It's getting late Ma, I think I am going to go get some sleep. I'll come by tomorrow." she hugged her mother and her brother. "Bye Souta. Nice seeing you Caryn."
"Lovely seeing you Kagome." Caryn smiled widely.
Kagome left the house and got into her car. She drove the short distance to her house and walked up the five flights to her apartment. Once inside she locked the door and practically collapsed on the couch. She closed her eye's and almost immediately was overcome with sleep.
§¤*~
Inuyasha woke up the next morning, having decided not to call Kagome the night before, and dressed in his sweat-pants and oversized sweat-shirt. He called a quick 'good-bye' to Sesshomaru and Shippo before he left the house. It was early and he hesitated going to see Kagome, but he needed to find out if she was feeling better; she left the gym kind of upset.
He drove the distance to her house; realizing, as he was stuck in traffic and stopped by almost every red-light, that it would have been easier to walk. Finally getting to the apartment building he turned off the car and walked up the stairs to her apartment.
Knocking gently he waited for a response.
On the other side of the door Kagome was hesitant to open the door. She stood with her head against the door debating about what she had, or hadn't seen the day before. Finally deciding that ignoring her mate wasn't a good idea she opened the door.
"Morning." she said dully.
"Morning Hun." he kissed her cheek. "You got any food?" he asked as he walked passed her into the kitchen.
"There is some Trix and I have bagels I think. I don't know I'm not a big breakfast person." Kagome closed the door and followed Inuyasha into the kitchen.
"Are you feeling better? I was worried about you." he grabbed the box of Trix and opened the refrigerator in search of milk. "Skim? Geez Kag, you trying to kill me?"
"I am really not feeling better actually. And you are over five hundred years old, a little skim will do you good. Where were you yesterday?"
"What do you mean?" he asked, pouring the milk into the cereal bowl he had found in the dishwasher.
"I buzzed your house and Sess said you were 'out'" she made quotations in the air, "and then when I called your cell Kouga said he dropped you off at home but you weren't there."
"I was, around." he stuffed a spoonful of Trix into his mouth and began crunching loudly.
"Hai but where? I needed to talk to you." Kagome was beginning to think there was something up with him and she didn't want to find out what it was. . . then again, she did.
"Just around; do I have to tell you everything?" he shot back.
"Gomen." Kagome felt as though she were going to cry. She didn't care where he was, but why was he being so secretive about it. . . and why were all his buddies covering for him? Her brain thought of the only conclusion it could. . . he was cheating on her. *And with 'Caryn' around I wonder with who* she thought sarcastically.
"Whatever" he said, reverting back to his old ways of being 'edgy' and sarcastic.
"Fuck you." Kagome stood up, grabbing her keys, and walking out of the apartment (making sure to slam the door extremely loud).
Inuyasha sat for a moment; unblinking, before he realized what she must be thinking. *Shit, I don't tell her where I am, I get my friends to essentially cover for me. . . she's thinking I'm fucking around on her. Fuck!*
Someone's in the proverbial dog house ^-^!
Okay and for all intense and purposes of this story Souta is only like a year or two younger than Kag. I know he is actually like at least five years younger or something but just smile and nod with me. ^-^ hehe. Okay later all!

Kagome left the house and got into her car. She drove the short distance to her house and walked up the five flights to her apartment. Once inside she locked the door and practically collapsed on the couch. She closed her eye's and almost immediately was overcome with sleep.
