Chapter 6
~~Broken Souls~~

Naraku sat in his castle, thinking of what he could do to his little hanyou friend. He had sent his spies out earlier to find out where they were, and they had yet to return. He began to wonder about the wench InuYasha traveled with. He appeared to love her, strange enough. He entertained the thought of killing her in front of him; he considered killing them both at the same time, letting them watch each other pass into the afterlife. The latter would not do, because they would be together again in the end. One of them would have to wander the earth alone, which one was the question. Just then, his spies returned, and gave him word on what was happening.

`Hmm, InuYasha's wench is not there, and Sesshoumaru and some bitch are there with him. This ought to be fun.' Naraku smirked, and stood up, draping his baboon cloak over him. With that thought, he pulled out a jewel shard, and he disappeared.

`Prepare yourself, InuYasha.' He thought as he traveled in the dark clouds, hiding his aura.

Naraku spotted them, the hanyou bitch sitting next to Sesshoumaru. Oh, how he longed for Sesshoumaru's power. He would be unstoppable then. He stopped in his tracks. That bitch…she had the power of telekinesis, a rare gift. He noticed a necklace the graced her neck, and realized that that necklace was what kept her youkai blood in check. If he could get that necklace off, she would most likely transform, and kill until she killed herself.

`But,' Naraku thought, holding up the jewel shard he brought with him. `If I put this shard into her necklace, it would give me total control of her youkai blood, and I can decide when she transforms. I can make her kill her friends, and I will barely have to lift a finger.' His laughter spiraled down, and he didn't care if the bitch heard him or not.

The clouds spiraled down just as his laughter had, and when he looked down, Sesshoumaru and the bitch were standing, staring directly at him. He smirked, knowing that the only thing they could see were clouds.

“The bastard...” The bitch said.

InuYasha came bounding out of the forest, landing directly in front of them.

“InuYasha, that's not an imitation!” Naraku heard the bitch whisper above the roar of the wind.

He saw InuYasha smirk at that. “So,” He said. “Showing yourself for real this time, eh Naraku?”

He figured that was his cue to come out, so he did.

“Yes, InuYasha, but I have not come to fight you. I have come to fight the bitch.” He turned to her, his eyes widening at the sight of her. “Why, I know you. You are Hana, the lord of the eastern lands' daughter. I am sure you know me as well, since I am the one who murdered your mother.” A malicious smile spread across his face.

His black heart leapt with excitement when he saw the look of horror and pain on her face. The pain instantly turned to white-hot rage.

“You fucking bastard!” She screamed, throwing rocks and other random objects at him. She took a few steps closer.

“How she died is beyond me,” He taunted, blocking most of the things thrown at him. “I mean, really, you would think that a woman with that much power would be able to kill me, but I guess she was just too weak for a powerful demon like me.”

Hana was reaching her breaking point. She was in front of InuYasha, who was holding a transformed Tetsusaiga, and she was spitting her next words.

“Why did you kill her? What the fuck did she ever do to you?” Angry tears were starting to stream down her face as she dropped her arms to her sides.

Naraku did not answer her questions. Instead, he said, “Why, the last time I saw you, you were a small, pathetic hanyou, and that's what you still are. You are just like your mother: you seem and look strong, but deep down you are nothing.” He emphasized the word `nothing,' to make her even angrier.

Hana pulled a tree from the ground and threw at him with a flick of the wrist. Naraku evaded the tree, but not without a scratch or two. In the middle of that attack, he had called his insects forward. Now was the time to take her necklace, and plant the jewel shard. His poisonous insects came racing forward, and in one swift motion, they took off her necklace, and put it into the hands of Naraku.

Hana's face went pale as her hand flew to her neck and she gasped.

Naraku inspected the necklace. Twelve diamonds made up the shape of a dragonfly. He turned it, and the small pillars of sunlight caught the reflection. He looked up to see Hana gearing up another attack, Sesshoumaru merely standing by and watching, knowing that this was not his fight. InuYasha, on the other hand, looked as if he wanted to rip Naraku's heart out.

`As if I have one anyway.' He thought with a quiet chuckle.

Naraku was about to place the shard within the necklace when a stone had struck him in the face, causing him to drop the necklace.

He swore when he saw Hana holding her arm out in his direction, her fingers extended and her eyes sprinkled with red.

“You think you may have won,” Naraku said, gently rubbing the spot where the rock had hit him. “But that was only a test to see how fast you would lose control. I'll be back to kill you for real.”

Naraku then flew away with his tail tucked between his legs as Hana continued to stand there, an eerie emptiness in her eyes.

Meanwhile, the undead priestess wandered through the trees, searching aimlessly for anything that would be connected to Naraku. She could detect traces of evil aura, but it was still difficult to tell where they were coming from. Eventually she picked up InuYasha's aura, and decided to pay him a visit. After all, it was nice to hear someone pledge his love to you repeatedly. A dark smile played across her lips. The other miko with whom she shared a soul would most likely be there. Oh, how she loved to cause pain for her.

`I will get you to go to hell with me, InuYasha, even if it is the very last thing I do. Moreover, the other girl will roam the earth forever, missing you every second. That will be the ultimate pain, and I shall enjoy every minute of it.'

A cruel smirk twisted on her face.

Sesshoumaru dove after the necklace. InuYasha did not know the importance of that necklace; he was not there when Sesshoumaru gave it to Hana. Hana was still staring blankly towards the heavens, the red speckles replaced by quiet tears.

The necklace was lying in a soft patch of grass, the last bit of grass before you entered the forest and was lost in the brown earth and multicolored leaves. Sesshoumaru gracefully stooped down and picked it up, watchful that the pendant did not fall off the chain. The sound of InuYasha sheathing Tetsusaiga was the only thing heard; Sesshoumaru turned around and saw a pained expression on Hana's elegant face with tears falling quickly, and InuYasha simply stood by, unable to comfort her.
Sesshoumaru walked up to her, hidden compassion in his eyes. He slipped the necklace around her slender neck, clasped it, and draped his arms tightly around her waist and pulled her close. She gladly accepted the comfort and warmth, and buried her head in his Mokomoko-sama, sobs shaking her diminutive frame.

The two brothers glanced at each other; both were thinking the same things: What happened with Hana, and where were the monk, demon slayer and Kitsune?

Kagome attempted to kick herself on the way home from school. Hojo had come up to her today, and had asked her to go out with him this Saturday. Not wanting to crush him, she reluctantly agreed after her friends had practically yelled at her to go out with him. She decided to figure out an excuse not to go out with him later. Right now, she had homework, and a lot of it at that.

`Nothing a little music and rocking out won't help.' She thought contentedly.

Kagome had a wicked CD collection, but her family never really liked what she listened to. The reason was that she was strangely drawn to western music, and had one or two posters to prove it.

As Kagome entered the shrine, she half expected InuYasha to be sitting at the kitchen table eating ramen. She sighed at the empty spot that InuYasha normally sat at and turned to head up the stairs. A dull ache had formed inside her after she left the feudal era and had been growing ever since. Walking down the hall towards her room, she could feel her heart getting heavier with each step.

Throwing her bag on the floor, Kagome immediately picked the latest mix CD she had created and popped it into her stereo as JoJo's song “Too Little, Too Late” filtered out the speakers as she flopped down on to the bed and closed her eyes.

`I wish we could have been something more, InuYasha, but….'

Tears streamed down the side of Kagome's face onto her bedspread.

`It's just too late!' The ache consumed her, causing tears to stream down the side of her face. `It's just too late, InuYasha. I'm…I'm sorry.'

She sighed as the next song - Snow Patrol's “Hands Open” - ruined her mood and made her feel like dancing. She immediately switched the song and, sighing again, got off her bed to start on her homework.

Kagome sat at her desk, her eyes scanning the paper in front of her. However, her mind wasn't on school. It certainly took some effort not to look to the window to see if a silver-haired hanyou sat on the ledge, waiting for her to open the window so he could come in. For the past few days she had been in her time, she had kept her window open in hopes he really would come. She was on the edge of tears, but wouldn't allow herself to that kind of weakness. She had to be stronger than that, didn't she? Wouldn't InuYasha call her weak if he knew she was crying? Kagome blinked back the tears and concentrated her gaze on her math. She was in the middle of a problem when a new song started.

`The lights go out all around me
One last candle to keep out the night
And then the darkness surrounds me
I know I'm alive but I feel like I've died
And all that's left is to accept that it's over
My dreams ran like sand through the fists that I made
I try to keep warm but I just grow colder
I feel like I'm slipping away'

Her eyes stung and the tears threatened once more to spill over as she listened to the lyrics.

`After all this has passed, I still will remain
After I've cried my last, there'll be beauty from pain
Though it won't be today,
Someday I'll hope again
And there'll be beauty from pain
You will bring beauty from my pain
'

In an ignorant rage, she shoved everything off her desk, put her head down, and wept.

My whole world
is the pain inside me
The best I
can do is just get through the day
When life before is only a memory
I'll wonder why God lets me walk
through this place
And though I
can't understand why this happened
I know that I will when I look back someday
And see how you've brought beauty from ashes
And made me as gold purified through these flam
es

After all this has passed, I still will remain
After I
've cried my last, there'll be beauty from pain
Though it won'
t be today,
Someday I
'll hope again
And there'll be beauty from pain
You will b
ring beauty from my pain

Here I
am, at the end of me
Tryin
' to hold to what I can't see
I forgot how to hope
This night's been so long
I cling to Your promise
There will be a dawn

She didn't notice the picture that was buried underneath the papers on the floor.

`After all this has passed, I still will remain
After I
've cried my last, there'll be beauty from pain
Tho
ugh it won't be today,
Someday I
'll hope again
And there'll be beauty from pain
You will bring beauty from my pain
'

While their friends were fighting the battle in the clearing, Miroku, Sango, and Shippou were busy fighting their own battle. The insects were attacking unmercifully, the amount infinite.

Sango, trying her best to stay up and fight, could feel something inching its way over her body.

“Monk!” She shouted. “This is no time for your lecherous acts!”

Miroku glanced over his shoulder as he swung at an insect, slicing it in half. “Sango, that is not me, unless you yourself are running your hand along my leg?” A lecherous smile spread over his face.

A look of horror washed over Sango's expression, and she spun around at the cry of Shippou. The Kitsune was being pulled under the ground by vines crawling up over his body. She looked down to see that the same was happening to her and a quick glance at the monk told her that it was happening to him as well.

Darkness was enclosing around them fast. Sango was the first to go under, due to her futile attempt at slashing at the vines. Miroku had also tried to lacerate the vines, but failed when the earth swallowed him. Shippou was the last to go; he squirmed, but was still unable to free himself. The idea of yelling for help raced through his mind, but as soon as he had formed the words and opened his mouth to say them, soil filled his mouth as the rest of his body went under. Everything was silent. The insects had left. The only things that remained were Sango's Hiraikotsu and Miroku's staff. It seemed the sun had stopped shining for that moment. The birds had disappeared….For the moment, Naraku…had won.

Good Lord, that took a long time! I've had some serious mental blocks here. You'd all better be bloody happy with this. I mean, I love you all! *mwah*
