“Don’t you ever touch her again.” The man threatened. The bandit shook his head desperately and he ran away in horror and fright. The man started to walk towards Kagome and helped her stand. “ Are you alright?” he asked. Kagome shook her head and looked up to see her hero’s face.

He was a young man. He had brilliant, dark violet eyes, long, midnight black hair, and tan skin. He wore simple villager clothing and some kind of rosary necklace around his neck. Kagome managed to mutter, “ Yes.” “ Good.” he answered. Then they heard a horse’s neigh. Kagome gasped, “ Kazu!” The man looked puzzled, “ Kazu?” Kagome ran into the shadow and came back out with her horse. “ Yes he is my horse.” There was a moment of silence until Kagome said, “ Well, I should get going.”

“ No, wait!” The man exclaimed before Kagome disappeared into the shadows. “ Yes, what is it?”

“ Listen, the trail this time of night is infested with bandits, why not come back to my village. My grandmother and I have space for a visitor.”

“ And what makes you think that I’ll come with you?” Kagome huffed.

“ This.” The man threw a rock into another bush and it started to rustle and something ran out into another direction. “ See, loads of bandits will stalk you at this time.”

“ You’re worried about me?”

“ I’m- I’m not! I just don’t want you to get hurt.”

Kagome smiled and answered, “ Alright.” The man took Kazu’s reins and he, Kagome, and her horse started walking towards the little village. As they entered the village, Kagome asked, “ What’s your name?” The young man answered, “ My name is Taisho.”

Chapter 6:
Explanations
*************************************************** ***************************

Kagome and the young man named Taisho kept walking until they made it to the outskirts of the village and reached a shrine. “ Huh, a shrine….” Kagome thought. “ Your horse can stay here.” Taisho said pointing to a stable. “ Thank you.” Kagome responded and she walked into the stable and left Kazu there with the rest of the horses. “ Watch your step.” Taisho said as they started up the giant stairs. “ You didn’t tell me that you lived in a shrine.” Kagome said. “ I don’t say a lot of stuff.” He responded. “ Oh…” Kagome replied. They were silent for a moment until Taisho asked, “ So where are you from?”

“ Excuse me?” Kagome piped up, not knowing what to say as an answer.

“ I asked where you’re from. You live somewhere right, or you’re a wandering miko?” he questioned. “ I’m--umm…, from…. Around this region, I live my family’s shrine.” Kagome falsely answered. “ What were you doing around those parts?” he asked. “ I was called to exorcize a house.” Kagome lied. “ Oh,” he responded, “ well here is were I live.”

They made it through the torii gate and into the shrine. It was an ordinary shrine with its temple, stone lanterns, and other buildings. A forest was behind the shrine boundaries and a small pond was near the temple. A small hut was at one side of the shrine. Kagome followed Taisho to the hut and entered it.

“ I’m back grandmother.” Taisho said. Inside the hut, a small pot was above a small fire. The fire lighted up the hut and made it warm. Then, an elderly woman walked out of a room. She had gray hair that was tied into a ponytail, brown eyes, tan skin and she wore miko clothing. The woman smiled and said, “ Welcome back Taisho. I see you brought company.” “ Yeah, she was almost killed by a bandit but she’s alright.” “ Hello..” Kagome said. “ Good evening child, my name is Kaede. What’s your’s?” “Ummm…..” “ What should I say? If I say my real name, she’ll probably know who I am….” Kagome thought franticly and she managed to utter, “ My name is Hima.” “ It’s a pleasure to meet you Hima.” Kaede replied. “ Grandmother,” Taisho started, “ can Hima sleepover here? There is no other place in the village that she would be able to lodge in.” Kaede nodded and replied, “ But of course she can stay. We have little room here but she can stay.” “ Thank you.” Kagome answered. “ Taisho,” Kaede started, “ I only have enough food for the both of us, could go get some more trout from the river.” “ Alright.” Taisho replied, grabbed his net, and walked out of the hut. Kagome sat next to the fire with Kaede.

“ Hima, what brings you to these parts at this time?” Kaede asked. Kagome, busy looking around the hut, was surprised, “ Excuse me?” Kagome asked. “ I said that what were you doing at this hour?” Kaede repeated. “ I was called to exorcize a house.” Kagome lied. Kaede nodded and Kagome asked, “ So if your Taisho’s grandmother, what happened to his parents?”

“ It’s not really a topic I like to discuss,”

“ I’m sorry, I was just curious.”

“ It’s alright, I would be glad to explain it to you. You see, I am not his grandmother. Hima, this is what happened nineteen years ago…”

(Flashback)

It was a rainy night and yet somewhat peaceful night. Inside a hut, a younger version of Kaede was dousing out the fire and muttered, “ It never stops raining at this time of season.” She then walked over to her futon, got inside and turned off the lantern next to her. She was about to doze off, until she heard a crash and a loud knock. Kaede glared, “Bandits.” she muttered. She climbed out of her futon, grabbed an ax and proceeded to the door with caution. She opened the flap of the hut and yelled, “ Who’s there?!” She got an ear-splitting wail as an answer. Kaede looked down to her feet and dropped her ax to the ground. A small woven basket with a blanket covering it was there. She quickly grabbed the water soaked basket and took it inside. She placed the basket down carefully and lit her lantern. Kaede examined the basket and noticed a small scroll pinned at one side. Kaede took it out, unrolled it and read:

“ To whom it concerns, please take care of the hanyou infant. Love him unconditionally and protect from ignorant villagers who will harass him of his youkai blood. If he was to ever ask about his origins, please tell him that they died in a battle against bandits. - Anonymous
P.S - The boy’s name is Taisho, like the past emperor.

Kaede placed the scroll down and uncovered the basket and gasped. Inside the basket was a newborn infant, sleeping soundly among the blankets he was wrapped in. “ A hanyou child.” Kaede thought. She smiled and said, “ Don’t worry Taisho, I’ll take care of you.” The rain stopped outside revealing a star-filled sky.

( end of flashback)

“ So Taisho was abandoned as an infant.” Kagome asked. “ Yes, I don’t know who brought him to the other shrine but has lived with me ever since.”

“ Wait a minute, old shrine and hanyou , you were at another shrine when he was abandoned? If he was hanyou, why is he human?” “ Ah, yes,” Kaede said, “ I lived in another shrine when Taisho was brought there, but when he was around four years old, cuircumstances made me take measures.”

( flashback)

‘ Hanyou! Hanyou! Hanyou!’ The kids in the village teased, throwing rocks and stones at the young Taisho, who was shielding himself behind his arms, which was covered in cuts, scratches, and bruises. The younger Kaede ran out of her hut with a pan and yelled, “ You wretches! Get out of here!” Kaede threw back the rocks that they threw and their parents came and protected them. “ Why are you protecting the half breed? You are a miko, you should purify him and kill him.” one villager yelled out. “ He is not a half breed he is just like you. Who cares if he is a hanyou, he hasn’t done anything wrong to the village.” “ Yes he has!” one villager yelled and the rest started joining in. “ Let’s chase both of them out! If she protecting this hanyou, she must be a witch!” Kaede growled and got in front Taisho, “ Don’t you dare touch him! If you touch a single hair on him or cause him pain, I will hunt you down.” The villagers backed off and returned to their huts. Kaede turned away and knelt down next to Taisho. She hugged him and said, “ Don’t be sad, will leave this village.” At the middle of the night, Kaede and Taisho had already packed their belongings and left the care of the shrine to one Kaede’s closest friends.

At daybreak, Kaede and Taisho had already made it to the next village. “ Taisho, for now on, your going to have to wear this.” Kaede reached into her kimono and took out a beaded rosary. “ Why do I have to wear it grandma?” a curious Taisho asked, taking the rosary into his scraped hands. “ Because it’ll stop the villagers from hurting you. Come on, put it on.” Taisho smiled and nodded an placed it around his neck. He felt a little strange after that and looked into a puddle. He noticed that his regular features had changed like his hair turned black and his eyes were a dark violet. “ Grandma why do I look different?” He asked. Kaede smiled and said, “ You are never different, even though your appearance had changed, you are still the little boy I know in the inside.” Taisho smiled and the both of them proceeded down the hill to the village.

( end of flashback)

“ The poor guy,” Kagome said after that painful explanation, “ he was so teased and mistreated as a kid.” “ Yes, but what surprised me is that he never lost hope that they would accept him as a hanyou. He was so persistent and those bruises and cuts never got to him but it still left him sad and hurt.” Kagome nodded slowly. “ I’m back.” Taisho yelled outside and came inside with a net full of trout. For supper, they had fried fish, rice, and tea.

After the supper, Kaede said, “ Alright time for sleep.” Kaede took out an extra futon and set it out for her. She turned out the fire and her lantern. “ Good night everyone.” Kaede said. “ Good night.” Taisho and Kagome said.

After a couple of minutes, Kagome thought, “ I have to go back to my home, before things get out of hand. Even though, Taisho is kind of handsome….” she blushed at the last thought and dozed off. “ Who is this girl? I would hate to see her leave, she is pretty.” Taisho thought, turning a little red at the last thought and he dozed of.
