“ So if your Taisho’s grandmother, what happened to his parents?”

“ It’s not really a topic I like to discuss,”

“ I’m sorry, I was just curious.”

“ It’s alright, I would be glad to explain it to you. You see, I am not his grandmother. Hima, this is what happened nineteen years ago…”

(Flashback)

It was a rainy night and yet somewhat peaceful night. Inside a hut, a younger version of Kaede was dousing out the fire and muttered, “ It never stops raining at this time of season.” She then walked over to her futon, got inside and turned off the lantern next to her. She was about to doze off, until she heard a crash and a loud knock. Kaede glared, “Bandits.” she muttered. She climbed out of her futon, grabbed an ax and proceeded to the door with caution. She opened the flap of the hut and yelled, “ Who’s there?!” She got an ear-splitting wail as an answer. Kaede looked down to her feet and dropped her ax to the ground. A small woven basket with a blanket covering it was there. She quickly grabbed the water soaked basket and took it inside. She placed the basket down carefully and lit her lantern. Kaede examined the basket and noticed a small scroll pinned at one side. Kaede took it out, unrolled it and read:

“ To whom it concerns, please take care of the hanyou infant. Love him unconditionally and protect from ignorant villagers who will harass him of his youkai blood. If he was to ever ask about his origins, please tell him that they died in a battle against bandits. - Anonymous
P.S - The boy’s name is Taisho, like the past emperor.

Kaede placed the scroll down and uncovered the basket and gasped. Inside the basket was a newborn infant, sleeping soundly among the blankets he was wrapped in. “ A hanyou child.” Kaede thought. She smiled and said, “ Don’t worry Taisho, I’ll take care of you.” The rain stopped outside revealing a star-filled sky.

( end of flashback)

“ So Taisho was abandoned as an infant.” Kagome asked. “ Yes, I don’t know who brought him to the other shrine but has lived with me ever since.”

“ Wait a minute, old shrine and hanyou , you were at another shrine when he was abandoned? If he was hanyou, why is he human?” “ Ah, yes,” Kaede said, “ I lived in another shrine when Taisho was brought there, but when he was around four years old, circumstances made me take measures.”

( flashback)

‘ Hanyou! Hanyou! Hanyou!’ The kids in the village teased, throwing rocks and stones at the young Taisho, who was shielding himself behind his arms, which was covered in cuts, scratches, and bruises. The younger Kaede ran out of her hut with a pan and yelled, “ You wretches! Get out of here!” Kaede threw back the rocks that they threw and their parents came and protected them. “ Why are you protecting the half breed? You are a miko, you should purify him and kill him.” one villager yelled out. “ He is not a half breed he is just like you. Who cares if he is a hanyou, he hasn’t done anything wrong to the village.” “ Yes he has!” one villager yelled and the rest started joining in. “ Let’s chase both of them out! If she protecting this hanyou, she must be a witch!” Kaede growled and got in front Taisho, “ Don’t you dare touch him! If you touch a single hair on him or cause him pain, I will hunt you down.” The villagers backed off and returned to their huts. Kaede turned away and knelt down next to Taisho. She hugged him and said, “ Don’t be sad, will leave this village.” At the middle of the night, Kaede and Taisho had already packed their belongings and left the care of the shrine to one Kaede’s closest friends.

At daybreak, Kaede and Taisho had already made it to the next village. “ Taisho, for now on, your going to have to wear this.” Kaede reached into her kimono and took out a beaded rosary. “ Why do I have to wear it grandma?” a curious Taisho asked, taking the rosary into his scraped hands. “ Because it’ll stop the villagers from hurting you. Come on, put it on.” Taisho smiled and nodded an placed it around his neck. He felt a little strange after that and looked into a puddle. He noticed that his regular features had changed like his hair turned black and his eyes were a dark violet. “ Grandma why do I look different?” He asked. Kaede smiled and said, “ You are never different, even though your appearance had changed, you are still the little boy I know in the inside.” Taisho smiled and the both of them proceeded down the hill to the village.

( end of flashback)

“ The poor guy,” Kagome said after that painful explanation, “ he was so teased and mistreated as a kid.” “ Yes, but what surprised me is that he never lost hope that they would accept him as a hanyou. He was so persistent and those bruises and cuts never got to him but it still left him sad and hurt.” Kagome nodded slowly. “ I’m back.” Taisho yelled outside and came inside with a net full of trout. For supper, they had fried fish, rice, and tea.

After the supper, Kaede said, “ Alright time for sleep.” Kaede took out an extra futon and set it out for her. She turned out the fire and her lantern. “ Good night everyone.” Kaede said. “ Good night.” Taisho and Kagome said.

After a couple of minutes, Kagome thought, “ I have to go back to my home, before things get out of hand. Even though, Taisho is kind of handsome….” she blushed at the last thought and dozed off. “ Who is this girl? I would hate to see her leave, she is pretty.” Taisho thought, turning a little red at the last thought and he dozed of.

Now on to chapter 7...

Chapter 7:
Bye for Now
******************************************************************* ***********

The rooster crowed as the sun was barely peaking through the peaks of the ominous, grey mountains. Inside the shrine, Kagome, Kaede, and Taisho were walking from their slumber. After cleaning up a bit inside, Kaede asked, “ Taisho, could you go cut some lumber for the fire, please?” Taisho stretched and yawned, “ Sure, whatever.” he walked out of the hut. Kagome and Kaede stayed inside and they cleaned the shrine from top to bottom.

After a couple of hours, midday finally came. Kagome sat on a stone bench under a majestic weeping willow tree. “ I need to start getting home now. If I stay any longer, mother and father would surely get suspicious….” Kagome stood up and walked to the hut. She walked in, “ Kaede,” Kagome called. Kaede walked from a room and answered, “ Yes, what is it Hima?”

“ I should really be on my way to my village. My father and mother surely be worried by now.”

Kaede nodded and smiled, “ Well it was a pleasure to meet you Hima.” “ Same here.” Kagome replied. “ Wait hold on!” Kaede called. Kagome stopped on her tracks and turned around, “ Yes what is it?”

“ Ask Taisho if he would escort you out to the trail, just in case.” Kagome’s cheeks turned a faint pink and stammered, “ Wh- Why should I?”

“ For your protection.” Kaede responded. “ Alright.” Kagome replied and walked out the hut. “ Crap, why did my voice sounded shy right now? It’s not that I like-- Oh my God!” Kagome hide behind a bush, not believing the sight before her.

Taisho was there, of course cutting the wood, but with his red haori off, revealing his bare chest. He had beads of sweat rolling of his forehead due to the late summer sun. “ He looks so strong….” Kagome thought as her cheeks turned a bright red, “ Am I blushing? Why should I, it’s not that I love him… Besides, I barely now the guy, get it together Kagome…” Kagome mentally reminded herself. “ Okay, I have to make this as believably real as possible…” Kagome thought. She quietly took a step…

“ Hey are you spying on me?”

Kagome widened her eyes and she popped out of the bush. “ How did you know I was there?”

Taisho shrugged, “ I don’t know. I have always had sharp hearing.” Kagome simply nodded. “ So what do you want?” he asked. “ I need to be going back to my village.” Kagome said.

“ That soon already? I was already getting used to having you around….” Taisho thought, his cheeks turning a faintly noticeable pink.

“ Taisho did you hear me?” Kagome asked after explaining her idea of him escorting her to the trail.

Taisho jumped, “ What?”

Kagome sighed, “ You didn’t hear a word I said did you?”

Taisho scoffed, “ Sure I did.”

“ Then what did I say?” Kagome asked. “ Ummmm….. Something about chicken?” Kagome giggled and sighed, “ You need to start paying attention. I said that Kaede said that you should walk me to the trail in case of bandits.”

“ Sure.” Taisho replied as he pulled on his haori on. As he has adjusting it, glimpsed back at the corner of his eyes and thought, “ Is she looking at me?” Kagome turned pink, “ Crap, did he notice?”

“ Ummm… we should get going.” Taisho started walking toward the trail and Kagome followed. “ My voice did not just crack now.” Taisho thought, turning a little pink.

“ How cute, his voiced cracked.” Kagome mentally giggled. After walking out of the shrine and village, they both made it to the trail.

They were silent for a couple of minutes until Kagome broke the silence, “ So Taisho, have you ever had a girlfriend?” “ Why should I ask him that!? That’s personal issues!”

“ I only had one.”

“ What?” Kagome asked. “ I only ever had one girlfriend. We were about to get married. Her name was Keiko.”

“ Wait, ‘was’, is she…” Kagome trailed off.

Taisho looked to the ground, “ Yeah, two months ago. She went peacefully in her sleep, or so her parents say.”

Kagome looked somber, “ I so sorry.”

“ Yeah.” Taisho sighed. ‘ I knew I should have asked him that…’ Kagome thought. “ You don’t have to be sad,” Taisho said, “ She was very ill for a month and it made me feel hurt inside to think that she slowly suffering and dying and I couldn’t protect her from the illness. So when she died, it felt that I was the one responsible for her death, and then….”

“ What happened?’ Kagome asked, some sadness in her voice. Taisho stopped walking and looked up at the sky, “ She appeared. After her burial, I was the only one there and she appeared and she told me that I shouldn’t mourn her death and that I should be glad that she wasn’t suffering anymore, then I kissed her goodbye and she disappeared.” He kept walking. Kagome followed.

“ So how about you? Have you ever had a boyfriend?” Kagome looked at him, “ No not really.”

“ Aw, come on! Quit lying! Someone as beautiful as you should have one. Taisho retorted. “Crap! Did I just call her beautiful?”

Kagome turned red, “ He called me beautiful…”

“ Ummm…… What I mean is….” Taisho stammered, “ Your pretty, you should have one.”

“ Well, I never had one.” Kagome retorted. Taisho nodded.
They reached a fork in the trail. “ Well, you should get to your village from here right?” Taisho said.

“ Yeah.” Kagome said. “ Hey Taisho, do you mind that if I come to visit for awhile next time, you know, as friends?” “ Yeah, that would be great.” Taisho smirked. “ Great!” Kagome said running off to one of the trails, “ See ya later Taisho!” Kagome yelled running backwards, waving and turned forward still running.

“ Yeah see ya!” Taisho exclaimed and he turned back and started walking back to his village.
