Chapter Twelve

Sesshomaru's form cast a shadow over the embracing pair, finally breaking them apart. Tolerance was gone; she'd had her chance now it was his.

“How touching. Now, miko, how do I get back?” he growled menacingly. “You've managed to retrieve my idiot brother, but I see no way back for me.”

Kagome looked down at the book that had been crushed between hers and Inuyasha's bodies. Her heart was beating wildly at having found herself in Inuyasha's arms that she'd completely forgotten about Sesshomaru…big mistake.

“Um…”

“Back off, Sesshomaru!” Inuyasha threatened.

Sesshomaru's eyes began to flash red at his insolent hanyou sibling.

“I've had quite enough of this sickening world, I want out.”

Kagome flipped furiously through the pages. She damned herself, realizing that the mantra only retrieved `my mystical entity' it didn't say anything about sending said entity, or any entity for that matter, back.

`Damn' she gulped silently; she had now managed to get Inuyasha stuck here too.

“Look, you jackass, Kikyo is on her way to the Southern Shrine as we speak to reopen the time barrier. Okay? So lay off!” Inuyasha shouted.

Kagome felt a dead weight settle into her bones. Inuyasha had been traveling with Kikyo? Spending time with his former lover; the thought caused every fiber in her body to ignite with jealousy.

Sesshomaru's eyes faded back to white. He cocked a curious eyebrow at Inuyasha.

“The dead miko?”

Inuyasha's lip curled. “Hai.”

Sesshomaru smirked. “How is that possible? Her spiritual power isn't enough. Most living human miko's barely have enough spirituality to invoke the Southern Shrine's time barrier.”

Kagome now looked from one brother to the other. This just didn't sound right to her.

“What do you mean, Sesshomaru?”

He merely cocked his unamused eyebrow at her now. “You're really dense for a miko, girl.”

Kagome went rigid from the insult; Inuyasha growled lowly at him.

“Kikyo borrows souls from other departed mortals; souls which are too weak to keep up continuous habitation of her body. If she possessed her own soul, her spiritual power might be enough. As it is, she's not nearly strong enough, which means…I'm still trapped here!” his voice rising steadily.

He took a step towards Kagome, holding a clawed hand out to her.

You'll have to come with me to find a certain gem that will reopen the barrier.” His voice shook slightly with anger.

Without thinking, Inuyasha pulled Tetsusiga from it's sheath, which transformed immediately. He stood protectively in front of Kagome.

“You ain't taking her anywhere!”

Sesshomaru scowled, the crescent moon on his forehead shifting on his flesh.

None of us are getting back without that amulet…”

Inuyasha's ears perked. “Amulet? Of Ages?” the hanyou asked; cutting across his brother.

Sesshomaru's brow lifted in surprise. He hadn't expected Inuyasha to house knowledge of the amulet, or much knowledge about anything for that matter.

“Hai, it has the power to move time, to open doorways where most spiritual power fails. There are prices to be paid for its use, however…”

Inuyasha's normally simple brain went into overdrive. Jaken had retrieved the amulet last night; had requested it from the spirit in exchange for his own life. That's what he had said anyways. Why would the pipsqueak do that if he thought that Kikyo had the strength to open the barrier at the shrine? Could Kikyo possibly have asked Jaken to get the amulet? To sacrifice himself?

“Jaken already has the amulet.” Inuyasha informed them.

“What? How?” Kagome asked.

“I saw him last night; he summoned the spirit and asked for it.”

Sesshomaru looked warily at his brother. “You lie. Jaken doesn't know of the amulet, I've never spoken of it with him…”

Kikyo must've been the one…Inuyasha began to ponder when a sudden flash of white broke all concentration.

Sesshomaru dove at him, thrusting his poison claws towards his abdomen. Grabbing Kagome by the waist, Inuyasha leapt backwards, away from his brother.

“I'm not lyng you bastard!”

Sesshomaru dismissed him, his golden eyes fixed on Kagome.

“Just hand over the miko, hanyou; then we'll both be able to return.”

Kagome felt a swelling fear grow in her chest as Sesshomaru swiped at Inuyasha once more. Inuyasha, just as rapidly as before, yanked her out of harms way. What the hell did he mean? Give her to him…?

“Sacrifice,” she whispered under her breath. She had seen the word used several times in the book…

“One human life is a small price to pay to get out of this hellish world,” Sesshomaru hissed, pulling Tokijin from its sheath. It instantly began to pulse with blue aura.

“You sick bastard! Like I'd hand Kagome over to you!” Inuyasha screamed, moving to hide Kagome behind him.

Sesshomaru sneered at his brother. The hanyou's loyalty to the human was his weakest point.

“Would you sacrifice Rin?” Kagome's voice invaded Sesshomaru's mind.

Sesshomaru couldn't hide the inescapable look of shock that crossed his face. Inuyasha smirked; Kagome had definitely touched a sensitive nerve.

Recovering, Sesshomaru raised Tokijin, the blade pointing skywards.

“That's neither here nor there, miko. My child is my responsibility and none of your business…” he spoke in his deadly calm.

`My child,' the words Sesshomaru spoke struck both Kagome and Inuyasha odd. Sesshomaru regarded Rin as his? His own child?

Flashes of bright light began to lick at Tokijin as Sesshomaru began to swirl the sword above him.

“Oh shit!” Inuyasha yelled, clutched Kagome and leapt to the roof of the bone-eater's well shrine.

“DRAGON STRIKE!” Sesshomaru bellowed, unleashing the youkai sword's power.

The wrath of the sword ripped through the air, tearing up earth and shrine. Inuyasha jumped to the roof of Kagome's house, the blast of energy pushing at him from behind.

Having been drawn from the house by the sound of the exploding shrine, Kagome's family stood in the open courtyard.

“Mom! Sota! Gramps! Get out of there!” Kagome yelled down at them.

Like lightning, Sesshomaru moved. Snatching Sota under his arm, he glared up at Kagome. The boy struggled in vain against Sesshomaru's ironclad grip.

“Come with me to retrieve the gem or your brother dies…”
