Chapter Four: Tomo's Musings
How much longer will you allow yourself to live in Naraku's shadow?
Tomo sat in the living room and pondered over Asakura's words. He knew she was right, he just didn't want to admit it.
When Naraku was alive, Tomo had spent his time staying away from the hanyou. He knew that if Naraku had learned of him, the hanyou would have wanted him. Even at that time, Tomo was strong.
The spider demon sighed and rubbed his face. After Naraku's demise, the spider demon had gone into deep hiding. His mother had been destroyed and spider demons everywhere were being hunted.
He had found a cave deep within Naraku's mountain and had made a home there. It hadn't been much, but was enough for him. Soon, he had other spiders try to share the cave with him, but Tomo wouldn't have it. That was how he had gotten most of his power. Fighting off the spiders who came near his cave. He knew better then to kill or eat anyone. The spiders were getting hunted enough.
Instead, Tomo had taken to feeding off other demons who strayed too near his cave. It had been a simple, quiet life. The kind Tomo had always wanted. But there was something he didn't like.
He had been alone.
More then anything, Tomo had yearned to be around others. He had begun to miss the outside world and the people in it. Finally, after three hundred years, he had decided to leave his cave and see what the world had to offer.
But, he had changed. No longer was he a child. No longer was he some scrawny weakling that many had teased. He had become strong, powerful. And handsome.
He had walked into the first village he came upon and was instantly accepted. Many young human females had flirted with him. He had taken advantage of this and fed off the naive teenagers.
He had gone from town to town, posing as a young lord who was surveying the land. And then some demon had heard of him. He remembered that fateful day...

The bird demon squawked as she jumped back. "Naraku!" she exclaimed.
Tomo froze and began looking around him, expecting the hanyou to jump out at any moment. Seeing that he and the bird were the only two there, he turned his glare on her. "Naraku is no where around here," he growled. "Unless I am mistaken, he has been dead for centuries now."
"You mean... you are not Naraku?" she asked, taking a small step towards him.
The spider was appalled. Him? Naraku? "Do I look like that psycho?" he demanded.
She nodded her head and retraced her step. He could smell her fear.
He gazed at her dumbfoundedly. He looked like Naraku? Of all the rotten luck! He sighed as he sat on a tree stump. "I suppose this means I'll be hunted," he surmised, bowing his head.
He could feel her curious gaze on him. Apparently, she realized that he definantly wasn't the hanyou. Out of the corner of his eye, he saw her kneel down beside him. He let his eyes meet hers as he heard her say, "I doubt anyone will come after you. Even if you were Naraku, it wouldn't matter. Times have changed, spider. Humans have gained knowledge and technology that we have barely begun to understand. The Lords have decided to join the humans."
He nodded. He knew of this already for he had seen it in practice between the various villages and towns. Though she had been the first demon he had seen, he knew the demons were about. He could feel their presence among the humans, though he hadn't understood why. Now he knew. The demons had started covering their identities.
"How long will this last?" he asked her.
She shrugged. "Could be centuries, millenia. From what I hear, the humans are becoming smarter by the day. It worries me a little. What happens if they become too smart and learn about us? We could be in serious danger."
He scoffed at that, "If the humans decide to rise against us, I highly doubt the Lords will keep us from going against them."
"You speak of war," she accused.
"I speak of survival," he corrected. He watched as she mulled this information over. Then, he smiled to her. "Would you care to travel with me for a while? The road is quiet and boring with no one there but yourself."
She returned his smile. "You fly through the trees while I fly through the air. As tempting as your offer is, I'm afraid I have to decline. My wings were not built for the forest. Besides, in this world, we are always alone."
With that, the bird took to the sky and disappeared.
~*~
Indeed. In the years to come, Tomo had learned that even in the world, he was still alone. And would always be alone. It was the penalty for being a spider.
Years later, he learned about schools and the human schools who needed teachers. He had decided he would do that. At least then, he could be around people. When the demon school opened up, he had been elated. Finally, a place where he could be himself and not have to worry about how others would react.
Now they were pressuring him to become a Lord. If he became a Lord, he could no longer work in the school. He would have lands he would have to precide over. He would have newfound responsiblities that would take up too much time for him to teach.
He leaned his head back and stared at the ceiling. If he became a Lord, he would have to father an heir. Meaning, he would have to get rid of Asakura. That, above all, was something he didn't want to do.
As annoying as the girl was, he found he enjoyed having her around. She took away the lonliness he always felt. Sure she was immature, impractical, and unreliable, but she was young. Many of those things would change with time.
He knew as well, that his time with her was short. Perhaps he didn't have to get rid of her after all. He could become Lord. And he could father an heir. It didn't have to be this moment. The Lord of the Western Lands didn't father an heir until recently, and he had been Lord for at least seven hundred years.
He could keep Asakura until she died, and then find a suitable demoness to place his seed in. The idea pleased him and he decided that's what he would do. He'd become Lord, but he would wait on his heir.
Happy with himself, he got up from the chair and went into the kitchen to get something to drink. That's when he noticed the little red light flashing on the answering machine. He looked at it curiously. When had someone called?
He hit the play button. His face paled as he heard the message: "Tomo? This is Detective Narita. I need you to call me immediately. It's about that girl who's staying with you. Her mother's lawyer called me. She's pressing charges.... Call me."
Tomo wasted no time. He quickly dialed Narita's home number, knowing the human wouldn't be anywhere else this late at night. They went over the conversation Narita had had with the woman's lawyer. Then, Tomo hung up and called his own lawyer.
The voice of the bird demon came over the phone. "Hello?" she answered.
"Taki? This is Tomo. I need your help with two things," he said to her.
The bird gave a singsong laugh, "So, Tomo, you're finally calling me, huh? I thought the spider demon didn't need any help?"
He rolled his eyes and sighed, "I don't have time for all of this tonight."
"Very well," she said. "What is it you need?"
"I've decided to take Naraku's place. I want those lands," he informed her.
He heard her catch her breath on the other end. So, she was shocked? Good. "Are... are you sure, Tomo? You realize that by doing this what it means..."
He scoffed, "I am not Naraku. Nor will I govern those lands as he did. I do not desire power as he did..."
"Then why do you want those lands?" she asked.
"Because, they'll help me in the courtroom. The judge will be less likely to say no to a Lord," he answered.
There was a pause on the other end. Finally, her voice came to him, "What was the other thing you needed? What have you done, Tomo?"
It was his turn to laugh. "I need you to be my lawyer in a case to come. I have this girl living with me and her mother wants her back. I don't want to give her up."
"You have... a girl... living with you?" she questioned, stunned beyond belief.
"Yeah, imagine that... a girl," he retorted sarcastically.
She laughed and continued, "That's not what I meant... I thought you didn't take in others. Why is she living with you?"
He shrugged, though he knew she wouldn't see the gesture. "It was my fault she found out about our kind. I didn't want to see her killed over something like that. Plus, Rin made me promise to protect her."
"Lord Sesshomaru's daughter?... Wait, this girl is a human? You took in a human girl? How old is she?"
"16?" he answered.
She sighed, "Tomo, the human laws are very strict when it comes to minors. It will be extremely difficult for you to win this case."
"That's why I want to become a Lord. Being a Lord means, not only have I the power, but the title as well. It looks better in the court," he told her.
"You want to become Lord for this girl?" she asked.
"Yes," he answered.
He could feel her smile, though he did not know why. She agreed to help him. Right before they hung up, she left him with this, "I can't believe you did it. You finally found a way to not be alone."
