Chapter Five: The Meaning of Alone
Asakura giggled as she looked down at him. They were both slick with sweat as she continued to ride him.
Tomo merely grinned before closing his eyes. It wasn't one of his favourite positions, but it did have it's advantages. For one, he didn't have to do as much work. And for two, his hands were free to roam her body.
Since she had been with him, Tomo had kept to his humanoid form. The last thing he wanted to do was scare her in any way. He figured if he started sprouting out extra arms, she would definantly be frightened.
The doorbell rang and Tomo groaned. "Ignore it," he told her.
She shook her head. "What if it's someone important?" she asked, worried suddenly.
He growled as he grabbed her arms and pulled her down next to him. He rolled over on top of her and continued to thrust. He hated it when he was interrupted from doing something, especially this.
The doorbell rang again and he could feel her moving underneath him. "They can wait," he growled, as he pounded into her.
She was trying to break free by this point. She kissed him on the lips and touched his face. "We really should find...." she began, but was lost as his thrusting finally took over.
Yes. They could wait. If it was really important, they would either stay or come back later.
They met their climaxes and Tomo fell to the bed next to her. He drapped his arm across her body as they both tried to catch their breath. They smiled at each other.
"Do you think I'll ever bare a child from all of this?" she asked.
He stopped and looked at her. "All of what, exactly?" he questioned, becoming serious.
She waved a hand, indicating their bodies. "You know? Have sex. I've had more sex with you in the small time I've known you then I've ever had with any of my previous boyfriends," she confessed. "And you and I never use protection. So, I wonder how long it will take before I become pregnant..."
Suddenly cold, the spider demon sat up in the bed and threw his legs over the side. "You won't get pregnant," he informed her.
She looked at him curiously, wondering why he was taking this so hard. "How do you know?" she pried.
He snorted, "Because spiders don't have children the same way humans do. To have a child, I would have to kill you and then, our children would use you as a host."
She had heard of the way real spiders laid eggs and such. And there were some who used a host for their children. She did not think spider demons were the same way, but Asakura surmised that they were more simular then she thought.
"Are there any half spider demons around?" she asked.
He shrugged. "There has been only one from what I know of. Spiders don't mate with humans."
"Only one..." she thought this over. "Who was that?"
"Naraku," was his answer.
"Oh..." she said. From what she knew of Naraku, which was little, he had been born from many demons getting together and forming into one. Tomo was Naraku's cousin, and only living heir. Naraku was only half demon... And there were no other half spider demons... "So, how do you know you would have to kill me in order to produce a child?"
He shot her dagger eyes as he snarled, "It is the way spiders have been having children for millenia. There is no other way. In order to produce a child, someone must die."
"And so, you and I will never have kids because you don't want to kill me?" she asked, tears coming to her eyes. "I will never have children of my own?"
He sighed as he ran a hand over his face. The last thing he wanted was to see her cry. He reached over and pulled her into his embrace. He gently rocked her as he spoke, his voice much calmer and soothing now, "No one ever said you can't have children. After this trial, you'll be with me. You could go to school at the demon school. You'll meet someone who can give you those children. You'll become his mate...." It never hurt Tomo more then to say those words. The idea that she would leave him one day...
"You mean," she sniffed. She pulled back and was surprised to see his watery eyes. She pushed back a lock of his black hair and shook her head. "No, Tomo. If the child cannot be yours as well, then I do not want it. It's my decision who I want to be with, and I want to be with you. I... I lo..."
Her words were lost as he covered her mouth with his in a kiss. He knew what she had been about to say and he didn't want to hear it. Truth is, she would leave him one day. She had to. It was the only way she would be able to live.
If she had spoken those three little words, he would have been lost. He knew she wanted to be with him, but that was not possible. And the mere idea that she could...that anyone could love him was obsurd. He was a spider demon and as such, could not and would never know what love is.
The bird demon had been wrong. Tomo was still alone. He would always be alone. Such is the life of a spider. He was happiest when he was alone... wasn't he?
He gently placed her back on the bed as he began to move on her again. Yes, he did prefer to be alone, but it was nice to have someone there every once in a while.
Before he could enter her, the doorbell rang again. His eyes turned red as he snarled. He pushed himself off of her and flew out of the bed. Grabbing his robe, he made his way to the door. Death was in his eyes for anyone who had been stupid enough to stay at that door.
She rushed after him and made it to the door before he could open it. She stepped between him and the door and placed a hand on his chest. "Tomo, calm down," she whispered, fearfully.
She didn't know who was there, but she didn't want anyone to get hurt. "Move," he ordered her, shooting her a glance that clearly told her what he would do to her if she didn't obey.
Terrified, she stepped to the side and watched as he opened the door.
"Tomo," came a singsong voice.
"What do you want?" he growled.
"Well! I have never!" the voice proclaimed. "Here I am, making a housecall, which I really shouldn't have to do, and you come and demand to know what I want?"
Asakura ventured a peek through the peephole and was surprised to see a short, skinny woman. The woman had long, feathery hair that had more colours in it then a rainbow. She wore a bright green tunic and orange pants.
Asakura touched Tomo's arm. The spider demon sighed, but opened the door a bit more. "Come on in, Taki," he told the woman.
Asakura watched in amazement as the woman bounded gracefully into the house. The two females met each other's eyes. The woman smiled warmly. "She's beautiful, Tomo," the woman admired.
The teenager blushed a little.
"Though... do you always keep her... exposed?" the bird demon asked, glancing up at the spider.
Asakura blushed even more and dashed into their bedroom. She came back a moment later wearing a robe. "Sorry," she apologized.
The bird waved it away, "It's nothing I haven't seen before. So, Tomo, why did it take you so long to answer the door?"
The spider growled. "We were in the middle of doing something when you decided to interrupt us."
Taki smiled mischievously.
"If you don't mind me asking, who are you?" Asakura interrupted.
Taki smiled. "My name is Taki. I'm Tomo's lawyer."
"She's a bird demon," the spider explained. "Taki, this is Higashi Asakura, the girl I've been protecting."
"The girl that you've been fucking, you mean?" the bird corrected. She looked over the teenager and nodded with approval. "I don't blame you. Grant it, humans aren't my cup of tea, but if I were a male and had to choose, she would be high on that list."
Tomo raised an eyebrow as he whispered dangerously, "You will respect her, Taki. She is..."
"I know. She's your mate," the bird demon said, shrugging. "You don't have to worry about me respecting her. Any girl who can take the heart of the Spider Lord has my respect."
Both the spider and the teenager bulked at the mention of her being his mate. Tomo began to argue, "She is not..."
"Tomo. Don't be stupid," the bird reprimanded. "You don't have to claim someone for them to be your mate. When was the last time you were with someone else? You look like you haven't eaten in weeks. When was the last time you fed? She's your mate. Admit it, accept it, get over it. We have more important things to do then argue about mates. First being, getting you some nutrition."
Taki was right. Since he had met Asakura, Tomo hadn't eaten. Sure he had the food that the teenager had fixed. They had gone to restraunts as well. But that wasn't the food he needed.
"And you," the bird piped, wheeling on Asakura. She was enjoying this. "As his mate, you are supposed to provide him with this sort of thing. Hadn't you noticed how pale he's gotten? How much his skin has sunken in? If anything, you should be pushing him out the door and making him go get some food. And if that doesn't work, you can always bring something home for him..."
"I have been feeding him!" the teenager argued. "I cook for him every night. And when I don't cook, we go out."
"That's not what she's talking about, Asakura," Tomo informed, placing a hand on the teenager's shoulder. He knew the girl took pride in her food. She loved to cook and loved to cook for him. His eyes narrowed at the bird. "I will eat something later. Get to the point on why you are here, or leave."
The bird shrugged and went to the kitchen table. She plopped her briefcase onto the table and opened it. "I've got some papers for you to sign. Legal stuff for this whole Lord mess. Mostly saying that you accept the position, yadda, yadda, yadda. You know the whole procedure. We need to get this done before the trial. Oh, also, would you want to move into the castle?"
He shot her a repulsed look. She laughed, "Alright, nevermind. No castle moving. However, you will need to hire servants to clean the castle up. I've been there already and the place reeks of Naraku. After the castle is cleaned out, you really need to think about moving into it. As the new Lord, you'll be expected to hold balls and get togethers in the castle. As well as raise your children there..."
"Children?" Asakura asked, looking to Taki and then to Tomo.
Tomo sighed, "If I ever decide to have children, she means. Don't worry, I don't intend on having children any time soon. At least, not while you're around."
Asakura looked hurt about this, but said nothing. She bowed her head and took a seat at the table. She watched as the spider and bird went through all the paper work. He read the documents and signed them. They made changes where they need be.
"If you are unable to produce an heir before your death, who do you wish to have your land?" the bird asked.
Tomo thought this over and finally decided. "Either Rin or her first born child. Whichever is alive at the time."
The bird tilted her head. "A woman? It'll be the first time a woman had ever controlled demon lands... Very well."
They finished up and the bird went on to the trial. Somewhere through this, Taki had begun calling Tomo "lord." The spider had taken notice of this, but said nothing. He knew it was only practice and something he would have to get used to. Before he knew it, he would be called "lord" on a daily basis. This also meant he would have to quit his job at the school. Not right now, but eventually.
After the bird left, the spider demon went to the bedroom to get dressed. He came back into the dining room and saw that Asakura wasn't there. He found her in the kitchen beginning to cook. "I'm going to go get something to eat. I'll be back in time for dinner," he informed her.
"Yes, my lord," she whispered, though she did not look up from the pot.
He looked at her curiously, but said nothing. He couldn't figure out why, but she seemed more humble for whatever reason. It hadn't occurred to him that it was the first time she had said anything since Taki had mentioned children.
Asakura heard the front door close and she began to cry. She forgot her cooking and sat on the kitchen floor. Her mind went over the conversation with the bird demon. Taki had called Asakura Tomo's mate. Why? Because she had his heart.
But, how could she have his heart? She knew he cared about her. That much was obvious. But love her? How could he love her when he couldn't even accept her? She had tried to tell him she loved him and he had stopped her. She knew that kiss had been intentional. She knew he knew. She had wanted to say it. She had wanted him to respond back with, "I love you, too." Her heart ached for him. For his reassurance that she wasn't just a toy to him. That she was something more.
"Don't worry, I don't intend on having children any time soon. At least, not while you're around." Those words hurt her even more. She knew what he told her. "Spiders don't produce the same as humans." But she knew something else as well.
The only half spider demon to ever have existed was Naraku. And, if anything, he had been an accident. How could Tomo resign to the idea that she couldn't have his child when no other spider had gone that far? Did he really not understand human reproduction?
And now he was a Lord. She wondered how long it would be before he decided to take on a Lady. And who would be his Lady? Would he even take a Lady? He had already resigned himself to the idea he would always be alone. Asakura knew this. So, did that mean he would never take a Lady?
Asakura wept as she thought through all of these things. She loved Tomo. She wanted to be with him forever. But, she was mortal. A human. The only way for her to have her forever, was if he claimed her. Spiders didn't claim anyone.
For the first time in her life, Asakura felt alone.
