Chapter Six: Human Mating
Asakura woke up early the next morning. She wrapped her robe around her body before leaving the room. She found Tomo lying on the couch. Thankfully, he had left her alone that night.
Without a word, she went to the kitchen to fix him breakfast. Eggs and biscuits. Simple, and not fancy. She really didn't care to fix anything spectacular.
He awoke to the aroma of the food. He sat up and massaged the back of his neck. He hated sleeping on the couch, but after last night, he couldn't see himself going into that room. He didn't know what had happened, but he really didn't feel like finding out.
He got up, stretched, and headed for the bathroom. He then went into the bedroom to change. He couldn't wear the same thing twice to work. As he put on his button up shirt, he heard the front door shut.
Assuming she went outside, he walked into the kitchen to find her gone. So, he was correct. Momentarily worried, he closed his eyes and searched his youkai for her. Sensing her on the porch, he relaxed and sat down to enjoy his meal. She had put the food on a plate and had the plate on the dining room table for him.
When he finished, he put the plate in the sink and grabbed his jacket before going outside. He found her sitting on the swing staring out at the street. "I'll be home a little later tonight. I have to stop by my lawyer's office after school to finish a couple things," he told her. "I pray that when I return, you'll be in a better mood. I apologize if I said or did anything last night to offend you."
She gave him no response and he left it at that. He got into his car and she watched him leave. As his car disappeared around the bend, tears went unchecked down her cheeks.
Asakura knew she loved Tomo. She could feel it with every part of her being. And, whether he admitted it or not, she knew that he loved her as well.
What hurt her was that the two would never be able to bare children together. Sure, there was always adoption. Asakura knew there were plenty of children out there who needed loving homes. And she was sure there were plenty of hanyou in that mix.
But to have their own child...
There was more to a child then just merely a person with arms, legs, and a brain. A child was a combination of two people. They took on both parents, and yet were neither parent.
It wasn't enough for Asakura to have something to hold and love. She wanted to have something that was a part of her... and a part of Tomo.
She did not know how long she had sat there and cried. She was startled when she heard the sound of footsteps coming towards her. She looked up to see an older woman.
This woman was strange in appearance. She had long, curly blonde hair and pointed ears. Her eyes were a deep emerald in color. There was a faint spotted look to her skin. Asakura knew this woman to be a demon. She didn't know how, but she could sense it.
"I heard you crying and came over to see what was wrong," the woman explained.
The teenager gave her a soft smile as she wiped her tears away. "I'm sorry. It's nothing. Just... silly stuff," she lied.
"Mind if I join you? I promise I won't bite," the woman swore.
Asakura tilted her head to the side. "You are a demon, aren't you?" she asked.
At first, the woman was taken aback, but then she settled down. She sat in one of the chairs across from Asakura. "I should've known you knew about my kind. You have been staying with a taiyoukai, after all," the woman said. She nodded as she answered, "Yes, I am a demon. A neko youkai to be precise. My name is Minka. I'm from the main land."
Asakura smiled. "I'm Asakura. Tomo brought me here after I found out about demons. Since then..."
The human could feel the hot tears threaten and she stopped. Minka looked at the girl curiously. "You know, I've heard that when one is lost, the Lady can help you find your way. She is very wise and knows more about matters of the heart then any mere demon. She is, after all, a human, like yourself. A miko to be precise," the neko suggested.
Asakura was puzzled, "The Lady?"
"Yes," Minka assured with a nod, "Lady of the Western Lands. Her name is Lady Kagome. She is the wife of Lord Sesshomaru, who rules over this part of the country. If you would like, I could take you..."
The teenager shook her head. "That won't be necessary. Her daughter is a close friend of Tomo's. He's got to have her number somewhere around here."
Somehow, the neko was not shocked by this information. "He would make a great Lord," she commented.
"Well, I suppose we'll find out," Asakura stated as she stood up. She smiled at the neko. "Thank you so much for talking to me. Do you live around here?"
At the neko's nod, Asakura continued, "Then I hope we can get to know each other. Right now, I have to go inside and make a phone call. Again, thank you very much."
The neko smiled and watched as the teenager went into the house. She did not quite understand why the human was there, for she knew spiders did not take mates. But, she assumed the great spider demon had his reasons. She stepped off the porch and made her way back to her own home.
Asakura stood in the middle of the living room and thought. Where would Tomo put his address book? She walked to the phone table and checked the drawer. Sure enough, it was there. It only made sense for it to be there.
She flipped through the pages until her eyes rested on Rin's home phone number. She picked up the phone and dialed the number. "Hello?..." she answered when the reciever was picked up from the other end. "Yes, this is Asakura. I would like to speak to the Lady, if you don't mind?... It's important... I'm the girl who is staying with the spider demon named Tomo..."
She was shocked with how quickly she was put on hold with that comment. The guy on the other end was planning on arguing with her until she mentioned Tomo. She heard the phone pick up again as a singsong voice came over it. "Hi, Lady Kagome?... I'm not so good, I'm afraid... I was talking to this neko demon earlier when she told me that if I was having problems, I should contact you... Well, I was wanting to know about hanyou and mating rituals between demons and humans... Do you think that is necessary?... Ok. Well, I'll see you in a little bit then... Thank you..."
She hung up the phone and stared at it momentarily. She was dumbfounded. Lady Kagome was coming to the house to talk... Asakura looked down and blushed. The Lady of the Western Lands was coming to her home and she wasn't even dressed properly! Thank Kami-sama Tomo made her keep the house clean.
She ran into the bedroom and went to the closet to get something to wear. She pulled out a hunter green silk blouse and a silk black skirt that went to her knees. She then ran to the kitchen to put on a pot of tea and began making cookies. It would be improper to have the Lady come over and not have anything to offer.
Once the cookies were in the oven, the teenager began going around the house making sure everything was set and proper. Though the house was spotless, Asakura was still panicky.
She did not know much about demons and their ways of life, but she knew Lords and Ladies were important people. Much like human emperors and kings. Tomo would be angry with her if she admitted the Lady of the Western Lands into a dirty home.
She vaccumed the rug to ensure there wasn't any dirt on it, dusted the shelves, and washed what dishes were in the sink. By the time she was finished, the cookies were ready. She took them out and set them aside to cool as she checked the teapot. Seeing the water was done, she placed it on a warming rack to keep it from getting cold.
She then placed the cookies on an elaborately decorated platter and washed and dried the baking pan. Finished with all of that, she checked the house one more time, closed the bedroom door, and sat on the couch to wait for the Lady.
It wasn't long until the doorbell rang. Asakura turned off the television and went to the door. She smiled as she opened it to see the miko. She wasn't surprised to see InuTaisho and Sango with her.
Asakura greeted them and waved her hand to the house, inviting them in. "Thank you, my lady, for coming," she said. "I hope my home isn't too shabby."
Kagome smiled as she entered the teenager's dwelling. She was very impressed with the house and told Asakura so. "I hope you don't mind me bringing my children. Rin is at school and Sesshomaru is away on business," she apologized.
Asakura waved it away. "Think nothing of it. Your little boy is too much of a cutie to turn down. And your daughter is beautiful," she commented, looking at the small babe.
As they sat in the living room, InuTaisho walked up to the entertainment center and began looking at the things on the shelves. "No, son," Kagome reprimanded. "You do not go into someone else's house and play with their toys without asking first."
"My lady, would you or your children like some refreshments?" the teenager asked politely. "I have some tea made and the cookies..."
"Cookie!" InuTaisho shouted. "Mommy, I want cookie!"
Asakura paled as Kagome laughed. The miko nodded. "I suppose you can have one or two," she told the boy.
The little boy leaped in the air and took Asakura's hand. "Cookie! Cookie! I want cookie!" he told the girl.
Asakura laughed, "Alright. Come with me."
She led him into the kitchen where she had the cookies. He greedily grabbed a cookie and bite into it. "Is it good?" she asked.
He smiled a toothy, cookie crumble smile as he nodded his head vigorously. He said something that sounded like, "Fairy gould." Asakura took it to mean that he really enjoyed the food.
She went to the refridgerator and fixed him a glass of milk. She turned to see the lady standing in the doorway watching them. She gave the woman an embarrassed grin. "He's absolutely adorable," she told the miko.
Kagome nodded in agreement. "He's a lot like his father, though he has a few of my qualities as well... Many days I will find those two just sitting in the study. One will be reading a book while the other plays with his building blocks. Neither speaks. Neither leaves his spot. It is moments like those when I do not worry about how my son will turn out when he gets older."
Asakura sighed, "Wouldn't it be nice to have something like that..."
"Like what?" Kagome asked, giving the girl a curious glance.
"To have a boy," the teenager elaborated. "A boy who will grow up to be like his father. Perhaps even better then his father. To watch him grow strong and tall. To be proud of his accomplishments... hell, I'd be happy just to have a son... or a daughter. I'm not really picky."
Kagome tilted her head to one side. "You are very young," she observed. "Should you not wait before thinking of a family?"
Asakura shrugged. "I suppose so. I mean, I have so much time ahead of me. I'm only sixteen... But..."
To the miko's surprise, the teenager started to cry. Kagome took the girl by the hand and led her back to the living room. Concerned, InuTaisho followed. When they sat, the little boy stood up on the couch and touched Asakura's shoulder. "What's wrong?" he asked. "Did you hurt yourself?"
Asakura shook her head. "It's my heart," she whispered.
InuTaisho seemed confused about this. "Your heart hurts? How did that happen? Is it because you want a boy?"
"InuTaisho, I want you to go sit in that chair over there and not say another word," Kagome told her son. The boy did not argue, but he wore a pout as he went to the recliner. Kagome turned to Asakura, "You said this meeting was important, Asakura. You also mentioned something about hanyou." She went to the pack she carried with her. She pulled out a thick, leather bound book and held it out for the teenager.
Asakura took the book and looked at it curiously. She could tell the book was old before she even saw the yellow parchment type paper.
"I borrowed it from my husband's library," Kagome explained. "It has pretty much everything there is to know about hanyou. Written by a monk who studied hanyou and their behaviour. This monk was fascinated about the mixtures of humans and demons. Spent his whole life devoted to them. And, when he died, his descendants continued his research."
"There wouldn't happen to be anything in here about spider hanyou, is there?" Asakura asked as she sat on the floor and opened the book in her lap.
Kagome sighed, "There is only one spider hanyou that I know of. Only one which has been written into the demonic history books."
Asakura looked up at the miko as Kagome began relating the story of Naraku and the Shikon no Tama. Asakura listened in wonder. Never had she heard about someone so evil, so cruel. No wonder Tomo hated the idea of being associated with Naraku. The mere idea that Tomo could be the hanyou's cousin made Asakura's skin crawl.
When Kagome finished, Asakura whispered, "I love Tomo. I love him so much. And I want to be with him." She bowed her head. "I know this means we'll never be able to have our own children... but... I wish..."
"Never have your own children? Who told you that?" Kagome asked, looking at the girl.
The teenager shrugged. "Tomo said it yesterday and the lawyer confirmed it. Spider demons don't have children the same way we do, therefore, he and I could never have children."
"Hand me that book," Kagome said. Asakura handed her the book and Kagome flipped through it. Finding the right page, she handed the book back to the teenager. "Second paragraph on the right. Read it."
Asakura read aloud:
"When mating, the sex of the couple is important. A male demon and female human will produce a more humanoid child, whereas a male human and a female demon will produce a more demonic child. Furthermore, the birthing of this child will depend primarily on the female for it is her womb or egg sack that the child will be born from."
The teenager looked up at Kagome. "What does that mean?" she asked.
"It means, if you were to get pregnant by Tomo, your child will be born as if it were a human," the miko explained. "The only spider hanyou to ever have been recorded is Naraku. Therefore, we don't truly know how spider hanyou are born, nor if they can be born. The theory has never been tested on spider demons. However, if the theory is correct, then it shouldn't matter. After all, there are moth hanyou and bird hanyou. And if birds and moths can mate with humans, I do not see why spiders cannot..."
The human teenager took all this in as she closed the book and went to hand it back to Kagome. The miko shook her head. "Keep it for now. It will come in handy in the weeks or so to come. Just make sure to return it when you are finished," the miko offered.
Asakura thanked her as she held the book closer to her. Kagome got up and called to her son. "Asakura, since Tomo is now a Lord, you can call me Kagome. In fact, I insist. We are equals now," she told the girl.
Asakura blushed. "I could never be your equal, my lady. Not only are you gifted and powerful, but you are wise as well," she told the woman as she watched the mother take her son's hand.
Kagome smiled. "One day you will be as well. Just give it time. You are still young and have many years ahead of you," she told her.
Before Kagome left, Asakura asked her about becoming someone's mate. Kagome explained the claiming ritual before nodding her head and leaving.
As Asakura watched the woman's car pull out of the driveway, she smiled. For once, she saw a light in her future.
