Chapter Eight: Trial Day
Tomo led Asakura down the aisle. On the plantiff side sat Mister and Mrs. Higashi. Asakura's heart soared when she saw her father.
"Daddy!" she shouted as she jetted pasted Tomo to meet with the man. Mister Higashi stood up and held his arms out for his daughter. Asakura greedily hugged her father, taking in his strong smell of cologne. He was always putting too much of that stuff on.
He pulled away slightly and looked down at her. "Asakura, I have missed you so much," he told her.
She smiled. Tears dotted her eyes. "I've missed you, too. How was France? I heard winter there is beautiful."
He nodded. "It was. The only regret that I have is that you were unable to join me. However, I did get you something."
He turned her loose and went to the table he and her mother sat at. There, he picked up a bag that had French lettering on the sides. He walked back to her and handed her the package. "I know how much you love snowglobes," he said.
She took the package and then smiled at him. "Daddy, I want you to meet someone," she turned and looked at Tomo. She motioned for the spider demon to approach. "Daddy, this is Tomo."
The older man looked at the demon thoughtfully. Tomo studied him as well. The demon wondered at this man. Had Tomo not known better, he would've thought this man was a loving father. Someone who was always there for his children. However, Asakura had told him of her father's business trips. How often and how long the man was gone.
For the most part, Mister Higashi looked a lot like Asakura. Though he was shorter then she and a bit rounder. He wore a simple black suit with a silk tie.
It was obvious that her father did not lack in money. He reeked of the stuff.
This angered Tomo more then anything. Here was a man who could give his daughter anything she desired, and he gave her... snowglobes? She should've already been going to the best schools. What was he doing with all that money?
"So, you are the man who kidnapped my daughter?" Mister Higashi commented.
Tomo shrugged. "I did not kidnap her. She wanted to come. "
"And what do you plan on doing with her?" the man pressed.
The spider demon raised a single eyebrow. "She will attend the best schools and get her education for starters. There is much for her to learn before she can take her proper place."
"Her proper place?" Mister Higashi repeated. His face turned cold. "Her proper place is at home with my wife and son. Who are you to judge what is best for my daughter?"
"We shall see," Tomo challenged. He touched the back of Asakura's waist and proceeded to lead her to their table.
Asakura gave her father a watery gaze. "Please, Daddy, don't hate Tomo. He really is a great guy."
The man said nothing. He just nodded and turned back to his own table. As Asakura went to take her seat, she heard her mother's voice, "So, your father gets a big 'I miss you' hug and I do not? The least you could do is say 'hello' to me."
The teenage girl gave her mother a cold glare. "Hello, Mother," she growled.
Her head snapped forward as she watched the procession of the court. "Please rise! Honourable Judge Midoshi preciding in the case Higashi vs Tomo."
The judge, a rabbit demon, entered the courtroom and took his seat behind the stand. "Be seated," he said, offhandedly. He repeated what the police officier had stated, "This is the case Higashi vs Tomo...." he stopped. Looking up, he saw the spider demon. His eyes widened and he looked at the Higashi's. "You are suing this man?"
The Higashi's lawyer stood up and nodded. "Yes, Your Honour. Not only has he kidnapped their daughter, but he refuses to return her."
"Do you realize who he is?" the judge asked, giving them a dumbfounded look.
When the lawyer returned the judge's gaze, the judge's eyes widened. "This is Lord Tomo, a very powerful and prestege lord in these parts..."
"I did not realize 'lords' still existed, Your Honour," the lawyer confessed.
"They are not as common, but yes, they do still exist," the judge confirmed. He looked to Tomo. "Why don't you just give the girl back?"
Tomo shook his head. "I will not do that. It's not just a matter of me keeping her. She wants to be with me," he told the judge.
Then, Tomo did something the judge found strange. It looked as if the spider demon had turned to Asakura and had begun kissing her. Right there in the courtroom. He watched as both parents stood up to protest.
Tomo gave Asakura a soft smile as he fixed the collar of her blouse. Then, he turned back to the judge. He said nothing, and from the look on the judge's face, nothing needed to be said.
The moment Tomo had pulled back the collar, Tomo's scent had filled the air. Every demon in the room could smell the spider demon. But, that wasn't all. Visible only to the demons, Asakura had a slightly demonic aura about her. The judge could feel the fear coming to him from his toes. Tomo had claimed the girl.
The judge could feel the goosebumps crawl along his back. "Higashi Asakura, will you come to the stand please?" he called to the girl.
She nodded and stood. Touching Tomo's shoulder slightly, she walked up to the judge's bench and took a seat to the left of him. He looked at her. "Are you well, child?" he asked her.
"Yes, Your Honour. More well then I ever could be," she answered, offering him a soft, pleasant smile.
"How has your life been with Lord Tomo?" he questioned.
She shrugged and sighed, "Some days, he can be the most difficult man I ever lived with. He's arrogant, fussy, a neat freak, and controlling. If it's not perfect, it's not for him."
Her parent's lawyer stood up. "If you are so unhappy, why do you not go home?"
"I never said I wasn't happy," she responded, giving the lawyer a puzzled look. "Tomo is also kind and generous. He never complains about my cooking, enjoys it when I draw him hot baths. He listens to me when I talk. Helps me when I need it. Gives me a shoulder to cry on.... He's there for me. He protects me. I feel... safe with Tomo."
"You've never felt safe with your parents?" the lawyer asked her.
She lifted her shoulders slightly. "When I was little, I used to pretend that my daddy was out in the world protecting me from harm. But, as I got older, I realized that wasn't necessarily true. Sure, he gives me anything and everything he thinks I want. But, when I need him, he's not there."
"And so you turned to an adult man? Where did you meet Tomo?" the lawyer asked.
Taki stood up, "Objection, Your Honour!"
The judge looked at her curiously.
"Records indicate that his name is Tomo, Lord of the Mountain. He should be addressed as such," the bird demon argued.
The judge rolled his eyes, "Sustained."
Tomo straightened his throat as the lawyer rephrased his question, "Where did you meet Lord Tomo?"
Asakura smiled. "At the fair. I was getting popcorn and he incidently knocked over my bag. He offered to by me a new bag if I rode a few rides with him."
"So, he tips over your bag of popcorn, and then offers to buy you a new bag only if you ride some rides with him?" the lawyer repeated.
She nodded in confirmation. "Typical male pick up line. I know. So lame, too. But, he was cute and he had a cute smile, so I gave in. It turned out to be a great night."
"What happened that night? Which night was it?" he asked.
"A... Friday night. We hung out, went back to his place, got a bit... comfortable. Then we watched a movie," she told him.
"Were the two of you intimate that night?" he pried.
Asakura looked at him curiously. She knew what he was after, but she threw a mischievous smile to Tomo before shooting back, "What do you mean?"
The lawyer was caught off guard. "Were the two of you intimate?" he repeated, wondering what was wrong with the question. "You do know what intimacy means, correct?"
She shrugged as she sat back in her chair. "There are several things that can be intimate. A touch, a kiss, a hug, a cuddle. It can be talking to one another, watching TV together, or going for a swim. You'll have to be more specific."
The judge chuckled, but said nothing.
The lawyer looked at her closely before asking, "Did you and Lord Tomo have sex that night?"
"Which night?"
"Friday night."
She shrugged and sat back in the chair. "Perhaps. It was such a busy day that day..."
"Miss Higashi, please answer the question. Did you and Lord Tomo have sex that night?" The judge asked, getting impatient.
She rolled her eyes. "What do you think? Of course we had sex! I mean, you don't go over to a guy's house, curl up on his couch, spend the night, and not have sex. Duh!"
Tomo shook his head and looked to Taki for support. The bird demon just shook with giggles. She leaned over and whispered in his ear, "She's not helping our case, but she has a point."
"Did it ever occur to you that Lord Tomo was an adult, and therefore such acts could be considered statutory rape?" the lawyer asked.
Asakura raised a single eyebrow. "I wasn't a virgin when I slept with Tomo. In fact, I'd been with several other adult men before I'd even met Tomo. I don't date guys my age..."
This brought shocked silence out of everyone in the room, save Tomo. He knew this about her. It was the reason he had asked her out.
The lawyer glanced at his clients before turning back to the girl. "Is there a reason for your choice?"
"Guys my age are too immature for my taste. They're all about sex and have very little experience. I like a guy who knows what he's doing," she answered. "Not just that... I like a guy who has more to offer then an uncertain future. I want to be taken care of."
The lawyer smiled. He had her now. "So, you chose Lord Tomo? Nevermind that he will die long before you can have your 'happy' future..."
She placed her elbows on the stand and rested her chin in the palms of her hands. She gave the lawyer an innocent, sweet look. She didn't know how she knew, but she could tell the lawyer was a human. "Unless I am mistaken, Lord Tomo isn't that old. In fact, he is no where near middle age. So, unless something bad happens, he and I will be together for a very, very long time."
Tomo watched in amazement as Taki fell from her chair. The bird was rolling with laughter.
"Mrs. Tiki Taki, control yourself in my courtroom," the judge ordered.
The bird demon scrambled into her seat. "Sorry, Your Honour. I couldn't help myself. It's not often that there is someone so amusing in the courtroom."
The judge rolled his eyes and looked at the teenager. "You are finished for now, Miss Higashi. Please, step down," he told her.
"Wait, Your Honour!" the prosecuting lawyer protested. "I'm not finished."
The judge shrugged and waved at the lawyer to continue.
"So, Miss Higashi, is it safe to assume that Lord Tomo here kidnapped you?" the lawyer boldly asked.
Tomo stood up in his seat as he snarled, "Bastard! How dare you insult me!"
"Lord Tomo," the judge hollered, banging his gravel on the stand. "You will control yourself at once! Remember that you are in my courtroom, not your castle." The judge then turned to the lawyer. "And you... Do not make assumptions in this courtroom. Ask questions, but assume nothing."
The lawyer bowed slightly to the judge. "I'm sorry, Your Honour. That was rude of me. I will rephrase my question."
Taki finally got Tomo to sit back down, but the spider was bristled with anger. She knew the other lawyer had done that on purpose. The reaction Tomo gave was perfect for the man's case. If they were not careful, they could lose the trial. Especially now.
Asakura held a hand to her heart and panted. She wasn't sure what had got her heart racing more, the man's idiotic question or Tomo's outburst. As the lawyer passed her in walking, he flashed her an evil grin. More then anything, Asakura wanted to crawl into Tomo's lap and bury her face in his chest.
This lawyer was cunning. Too cunning. The teenager now knew his game. He was trying to get a rise out of the spider demon. To prove the demon's instablity. He also wanted to show that Asakura was unable to handle the demon in such situations.
She gave Tomo a reassuring smile. "It's ok, my lord," she said to him.
She saw him visibly relax and knew they were back in the safe zone. She smiled prettily at the lawyer. "You're quite the fox, sir. I shall have to be on my toes with you," she observed.
To her surprise, the lawyer looked at her in awe. A demonic aura appeared around him suddenly. Asakura's eyes widened. He was a fox! She knew her parents did not know about his demonic ways, but it still surprised her that they had unwittingly hired a fox demon as their lawyer.
"And you, Miss Higashi, are very observant," he complimented her. He composed himself before he continued, "So, back to our original questions. You said that you and Lord Tomo spent Friday night together. Why did he not take you home the following morning?"
"His best friend was having a birthday party Saturaday afternoon and he wanted me to come with him," she told the lawyer. "He told me it was a costume party."
The lawyer smiled. "And was it?... A costume party, that is. Did you dress up?"
She smiled as she nodded. "We were to dress in Feudal Era clothes. There was even this guy, a friend of Lord Tomo's, who was dressed as a knight from England. He and his wife are English."
"This best friend... What is their name?"
"Her name is Taisho Rin. She's the daughter of Lord Sesshomaru and Lady Kagome of the Western Lands," she answered.
The lawyer's smile became wicked again. "I have heard of this Princess Rin. She is a beauty.... Young, like you. In fact, if memory serves me correctly, she, too, is sixteen.... Why do you think, Miss Higashi, Lord Tomo prefers the company of teenage girls?"
"I never said that," the girl confirmed.
The lawyer nodded and agreed, "Correct, you did not. However, so far, he is keeping a teenage girl in his home and having sexual intercourse with her. Not only that, but he keeps another teenage girl as his best friend. So, wouldn't you say he prefers the company of teenage girls?"
She shook her head. "No, I would not. He has more then one friend. There is also Rin's boyfriend, Edward and Elizabeth Peabody..."
"Ahhh... I did not know Rin had been claimed..." the lawyer commented. He went silent for a moment before straightening his throat. "Shippo is Princess Rin's boyfriend, correct?"
Asakura nodded. "Yes, he is."
The lawyer thought this over for a moment before asking, "So, are you telling me Lord Tomo only has four friends?"
"I didn't say that. He's got other friends as well. He's friends with Rin's parents," she told him. "Other then that, I am not sure. I am not certain I have met all of his friends yet."
"And why do you think that is?" he questioned her.
She shrugged. "It's not like we have parties or anything. We go out every once in a while, but usually we hang around the house, watch TV, or... well... make out. If he has other friends, I haven't met them because we haven't been anywhere where I would meet them."
"He does not invite others over?" the lawyer pried.
She shook her head. "He doesn't really like a lot of noise or anything."
"And yet, he's living with a teenager, who are statistically claimed to be the noisest of people," the lawyer commented, smirking.
Asakura sent his smirk back to him with one of her own. "Perhaps you shouldn't listen to statistics. They have been known to be wrong."
"So, you went to this party. Did you have a good time?" he asked her.
She shrugged. "It was alright. Wasn't really much of a party, if you ask me. We spent most of our time sitting around talking," she answered truthfully. She would not admit the fear she had felt when she had sat in that chair.
"What did you talk about?" he asked her.
She gave a nonchalant lift of her shoulders as she breathed out, "Something about the Shikon no Tama and the Feudal Era. I don't remember much about it. I was too busy thinking about other things."
"Like how dull the party was?"
"They had a band. And a huge dance area. Not to mention the amount of food and drink that was placed on the various tables around the room. And everyone was decked out in Feudal Era clothes. Even the Lord and Lady," she told him. It felt nice to be able to let some of her frustration about that evening out. "It wouldn't have hurt to go through a few dance routines or something. But I didn't complain."
"And why is that?"
"Lord Tomo was there," she replied. "He was sitting next to me and he looked so handsome in that kimono. When he spoke, it was enough to take my breath away. By the time we went back to his place, I was exhausted."
"You mean, you were bored," he corrected. "To be exhausted, one has to over exert themselves. If anything, you sat there and did... nothing. Like many women in the Feudal Era did."
"Objection, Your Honour!" Taki cried out.
"Overruled," the judge said. He looked to the prosecuting lawyer, "Keep to your topic."
The lawyer looked at the girl. "What made you decide to stay with Lord Tomo? What caused you to consider living with him?"
There it was. The question everyone wanted to know the answer to. "Lord Tomo promised me something no other man, even my own father, had ever promised... A future. He wanted me to stay with him, because he was tired of being alone. In exchange, he offered to send me to the best schools and ensure that I was well cared for for the rest of my life... And honestly... I was tired of being alone as well.
"I wanted to be with someone. To be able to hold them. To cry on their shoulder when I was down, to laugh with them when I was happy. Someone I could tell my deepest and darkest secrets to without worrying what they think of me. Someone who wouldn't judge me. I saw these things in Lord Tomo... Look, I know he's older than me, but...
"Who said you have to be 18 to decide what you want in life? Who came up with that rule? I know eighteen year olds who are far too immature to make their own decisions. I know eighteen year olds who all ready have their own homes, businesses, cars, and families. Why does one have to be eighteen to decide what they want in life?"
"You are very young," the lawyer told her. Then, he agreed with her, "Yes, it is common for an eighteen year old to all ready have their lives mapped out for them. It's a little rarer, but still possible, for a sixteen year old to be mature enough to make their own decisions about life. But why?
"You have your entire life to decide what you want to do with it. You still have your whole youth to do whatever you want. Are you willing to throw away everything you could have to be with a guy who has already experienced it?
"Lord Tomo is an adult. He's had his teenage years already. He already knows what it's like to do wild and crazy things. Do you really believe he's going to want to go out to that new nightclub when he has work the next morning?"
Asakura thought about what he said. Then, slowly, she started, "I understand what it is you are saying. But, I want to be with Lord Tomo. It does not matter what he has or has not already experienced. What matters is what I feel towards him."
Without dismissal, she got up from her seat and looked at the judge. "Proclaim what you wish. Give a court order that I am to be returned to my parents, if you so choose. I do not care. I have already made my choice. I choose Lord Tomo.
"If you tell me I am not to be with him, I will sneak and hide. Nothing, not even death itself, will keep me from him. I love him."
On that word, Asakura walked away from the stand and to the exit. Before she left, she turned and looked at the lawyer. "And yes, I do believe he would go to that nightclub with me. If for no other reason then to say he did it."
