Chapter Ten: Letting Go

Tomo looked at Asakura and froze.

Asakura's eyes widened and she paled considerably.

Ever so slowly, Tomo whispered, "You're... you're pregnant?"

The teenager was struck speechless. How was she to know? She didn't think she was. After all, they'd done it so many times before. And she was always careful to...

No. They never used protection. Because Tomo had been convinced that he couldn't get her pregnant. A slow smile began to spread across her face as realization started kicking in. She was pregnant. Now that she thought about it, she could feel it. She knew it, in her heart.

Tears filled her eyes as she looked at Tomo and gave him a watery smile.

Without thinking, Tomo shot out of his seat and ran to her. He picked her up and swung her around. When he stopped, their lips met in a deep, passionate kiss. She giggled and threw her head back, revealing her chin and neck to him. He immediately began kissing her there.

Rin jumped up and down in her seat as she turned to Shippo and showered him with kisses. She squealed in delight as she hugged the kitsune's neck.

Even Kagome couldn't help but smile at the girls' excitement. She knew this was what Asakura had wanted. She took Sesshomaru's hand into hers and gave it a squeeze. She felt him kiss the top of her head and she leaned her head onto his chest.

Tomo held his mate close. She was pregnant. She was going to have his child! He was in disbelief. Not long ago, he had believed none of this would ever happen to him. And now, it was. Not only was he madly in love with his mate, but he was going to be a father.

"My lord? You are still under oath. Please return to your seat," the judge hated to interrupt, but he knew the importance of this trial.

Tomo shot him a dangerous look, but reluctantly let Asakura go. He retook his seat with a large smile on his face.

"I'm surprised you did not know, my lord," the kitsune continued.

"Child or not, I will take only Asakura to be my Lady. Because she is the only one fit to be in that position," Tomo told the kitsune.

"The only one fit to be in that position..." Mikali repeated. "You will have to elaborate, my lord. I'm awfully confused by your meaning."

Tomo looked at the Higashis. His eyes made contact with Mr Higashi as he spoke. "I love Asakura. I love her with every part of my being. I know my age, as well as I know hers.

"I will admit. When I first met Asakura, I asked her out because she was a teenager. Yes, it was a fascination of mine. The idea of a teenager is eternal youth. For, the essence of a teenager never grows old.

"As I got to know Asakura, I realized I wanted more then that. Eternal youth no longer carried the same appeal. Asakura opened my eyes to other things. A life, a family. Things I thought I would never have. Things I never dreamed I would want.

"Before her, I was just a math teacher. Every weekday, I got up, went to school, came home, and went to bed. Weekends, I spent my time looking for something I never could find. Because I didn't know what I was looking for.

"I found it in her. A life. My life. My world. She means everything to me. I know you worry about her happiness, but you have no need to. I give you my word that I will do whatever it takes to make her happy. Even if it means she wants to leave me. My life belongs to her. She is my heart, my soul. Without her, life would be... incomplete."

"You took my baby girl away," Mrs. Higashi shouted. She stood up and pointed an accusing finger at him. "You took her and refused to give her back! And now, she's pregnant! With a bastard child from a bastard father! You have destroyed this family!"

"Wrong!" Tomo growled, raising his voice for one of the very few times in his entire life. "Your family was destoryed a long time ago. The moment your husband left you!"

"I never left my wife!" Mister Higashi shouted.

"Really? So, Madamoiselle Michelle means nothing to you? All those times you went out on 'business trips' where did you really go?" Tomo asked him through gritted teeth, trying to keep his temper down. "I've done my homework, Mr Higashi. You've been wanting to leave your wife for years now. You've only stayed with her because of the children. You've never gone on business trips! You don't have a job! You made your job up and your mistress in France pays for your flights. That's why your wife and kids live in the slums. Because your mistress sends them an allowance in your name. I know Michelle will be pleased to hear how grateful you are to her for supporting your family.

"I'm not just offering Asakura a family. I'm offering her a life as well. Opprotunities she would never have living in your house. She could go to college. Get a career. A real education," Tomo told them. "And yes, Mikali, I am concerned about her education. I didn't become a teacher because I liked teenagers. I became a teacher because I value education above all else. Intelligence, a brain.

"It's not just Asakura's body that I love. Yes, she is beautiful. But, she's smart as well. She's not afraid to stand on her own and she knows how to take care of herself. She doesn't need anyone to take care of her. She's taken care of herself her whole life."

Tomo looked at the judge. "Look. I'm not asking for much. Asakura is my life. She is carrying my child. I can provide her a future. They cannot. If you send her back to that family, she will become worse then the whores on the streets. They will abuse her and let others use her. If you do not believe me, ask them. Ask them what kind of future they can give her. What colleges and schools she'll be able to go to. She belongs with me."

"Lord Tomo, she is their daughter..."

"And she is my mate!" he snarled, hitting the counter on the witness stand. His eyes flashed red and his youkai began to spread.

Sesshomaru stood up and reflexively placed a hand on his side, only to remember he didn't carry his swords anymore. He took a step forward, but found he didn't need to.

The moment Tomo's eyes turned red, Asakura jumped out of her chair and ran to him. "Tomo!" she called to him, touching his hand and then his cheek. "Tomo, my love. Please, calm down. It's ok. Everything will be ok."

He looked at her and calmed. His eyes returned to their deep brown. He closed his eyes and leaned forward, resting his forehead on hers. He let his arms wrap around her body. "I'm sorry, my love," he whispered. "I'm so sorry."

She offered him a gentle laugh. "It's alright. I know you were just upset. It's over now. Everything is going to be fine."

"I don't understand."

Asakura turned to the voice. Her father's voice. She saw the confusion and the fear.

"What is he?" the man demanded. "He's not human. No human could do that!" he said, pointing to the witness stand.

In Tomo's anger, the spider demon had managed to punch a hole straight through the counter. Asakura looked to Tomo fearfully.

But, her father continued, "And what about his eyes?! They turned red!"

"Asakura, get away from that monster!" her mother begged. "He's a demon! A devil!"

Sesshomaru's eyes flashed as did Taki's, Mikali's and Midoshi's. Kagome grabbed her husband's arm. "Don't, Sesshomaru!"

Rin stood up and called upon what miko powers she had. She threw a protective barrier around the Higashi's before the three demons could attack. "Well, thanks for spoiling it!" she reprimanded them.

Mr. and Mrs. Higashi held each other as, even their own lawyer's eyes glowed red. "Asakura!" her mother cried out fearfully.

"Mother, Father. I had hoped this wouldn't have happened. I have to go. See? Tomo needs me. I'm his mate and he's mine. I'm having his child," Asakura told her parents. "If you value your lives, you'll leave and never think of this again. Be happy for me. I pray you find happiness within yourselves."

She took Tomo's hand. "I have to go now. It's time for you to let me go."
